Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "UTI - Bactrim for 7 days. Day 1 stomach discomfort. Day 2 UTI slight urgency but manageable, that night had an anxiety attack and heart palpitations. By day 4 exhausted, hardly able to do my daily work. I called my doctor on day 5, and she said this is normal - to just power through, and since I’m allergic to penicillin, I’m likely not allergic to Sulfa. That night had chills and a 100-degree fever. Day 6 I felt even worse (chills and fever) and developed hives. Was told I have a Sulfa allergy and to stop with the meds and start Macrobid. The next day with Bactrim leaving my system I developed a full body rash that made me look sunburned and had a 103-degree fever. The rash subsided 6 days after it started, and my other symptoms ended 3 days after I stopped the pills. Overall, one of the worst medical experiences of my adult life. Macrobid seemed to work, only symptom was head fog, which may have been from Bactrim. Giving Bactrim 2 stars because it seemed to clear the UTI."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I am currently suffering from recurring cystitis and UTIs. This is my first experience of taking trimethoprim, and after taking the 3rd tablet, I became quite unwell with flu-like symptoms, fever, headache, chills, whole body aching, and loss of appetite. Because of how terrible I was feeling, I didn't want to continue the course for fear it was the pills causing the illness. Is that possible? Or could it just be that I am run down and my immune system was low?"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Well. I developed an acne pimple I thought it was and busted it while I was at work on a Friday night. Sunday, my face was swollen. Went to the ER, and they told me it was herpes simplex 1 and it had gotten into my skin and tissue and then become bacterially infected. I have taken Bactrim before and was fine. Now this time around it makes me have chills and extreme anxiety attacks because I made a mistake and took 2 in the same day. I thought I was going to die! I will most definitely watch my medicine and make sure it doesn't get mixed up again. The swelling in my face is going down a little at a time. I just pray this antibiotic works."

For Bacterial Infection "Holy cow. So I am on my 4th UTI in 5 months, and this is the first time I have been on Bactrim, and NEVER AGAIN will I take this. The side effects are not worth it. Intense racing thoughts and anxiety within 1-2 hours of taking it. Feeling super dizzy and wobbly. Feeling like you are moving too fast/whiplash, intense depression, demotivation. One day I had chills and a slight fever. Appetite suppressed/food/water aversion. Made me sick to my stomach just to drink water. Exhausted during the day but insomnia. I gave it a 3 because it is working to get rid of my UTI, but wow, it has taken my week. I'm going to fail my finals because I was so out of my mind on this medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Listen! No! Heck no! Absolutely NOT!!! I was prescribed Macrobid, but itching started and my face felt numb just after the 2nd dose!!! So my doctor switched me to Bactrim! I will say the first 2 pills weren’t so bad. Little nausea, slight headache. But baaaabbbby, this 3rd pill is the awful! I’m currently shivering as I type this. I’m in a robe and under covers. Make it make sense. Prior to this, I had a scare... my heart rate increased so high!!!! Talk about a rapid beating out of nowhere, I FREAKED out!!!! I should’ve read the reviews and listened! I didn’t listen... thinking I’d have a better outcome. I had 3 pills left. I’m not taking that!! I’ll keep drinking my water and flushing my system because the symptoms were milder than the antibiotic!!!! We all are different indeed, but dang how can your body handle this stuff? Still shivering, by the way. I was given this twice a day for 3 days."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Relieved UTI symptoms fast, but after day 2 of taking pills two times a day, I woke up in the middle of the night with a killer headache! Painkillers did not help one bit to relieve the migraine. Symptoms currently are migraine, nauseous, vomiting, neck and back stiffness, fever with chills, muscle aches, diarrhea, and it hurts so bad to even move my eyes. I just may be allergic or 'sensitive' to this antibiotic, but even though my doctor said to keep taking it, I don't know if it is worth it, especially if it will continue symptoms mentioned."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Had cut my foot at a beach and was prescribed Bactrim, got the chills and chattering teeth, told to continue, and the next day had severe diarrhea and vomiting at the same time, hospitalized for several days, body bloated to twice my normal size, near death, would never take a sulfur drug again, especially Bactrim."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim after two other antibiotics failed to cure my UTI, and let me tell you, not only did it not work, but I also had a violent allergic reaction to it. I was suffering from my first UTI (first of many to come sadly). The symptoms went away pretty quickly after taking the first pill but came back after I stopped taking the medicine two days later. From what I remember, I got really sick: chills, high fever, nausea, complete loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, and red patches all over my body, but especially on my arms, legs, and chest. I had swollen lips as the first indication, but as I was young, I didn’t understand it at first. When I went back to the doctor, he said it was a pretty powerful medicine and that he knew beforehand that the risk of allergy was higher than with other medicines. I don’t hold it against him though, it was very frustrating not to find anything that would work to cure this UTI."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Never take this for a UTI. I've been having recurrent UTIs every month on my period. I usually take an over-the-counter drug called Uricalm (works wonders), but this recent time the pain was really bad. After going to the doctor, listing my symptoms of a UTI, they gave me this drug for 3 days. First day, I felt a tad nauseous with chills and hot and cold flashes. Second day, I feel so sick to my stomach and extreme loss of appetite. I'm not finishing these two pills I have left, they make it worse than it already is. If I could rate lower, I would."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prevention of Bladder infection "I was having symptoms of a UTI for a few weeks, so I finally went to the ER when the pain got worse. They gave me Bactrim. Two days after taking it (twice a day), I got flu symptoms/a cold. Today is my fifth day on it, and I feel awful, shortness of breath, so, so tired, and I feel so nauseous. And I'm still having pain when I use the bathroom, so I don't even think it's working. Going to call the doctor tomorrow, I won't be continuing this medicine."

For Bacterial Infection "I had hip surgery back in February from which I developed an infection. I have had two infection cleanouts and just finished six weeks of IV antibiotics. My doctor switched me to Bactrim, and I felt like trash. I got some bad nausea, a migraine, fever, chills, and muscle aches so bad that I thought I had the flu. The Bactrim makes me vomit as well. This was only on day one, not trying to take it. Hopefully, the doctor can switch it for me."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I’d taken this drug for a UTI about a year ago and remember feeling nauseous and dizzy, but not bad enough to call the doctor. Got two doses into this round, and 10 minutes after taking the second, my hands and feet itched unbearably, my lips felt swollen, I was dizzy, my heart was racing, and I was getting chills and hot flashes. I ended up in the ER and was pumped full of steroids and Benadryl. 9 hours now since my symptoms started, and my heart is still racing. Full-blown sulfa allergy."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Gave two stars because it did actually clear up my UTI, I think. No more burning or cloudy urine. The side effects were awful. Not only did I have extreme nausea, headaches, chills, hot flashes, insomnia, constipation, shakiness, and racing heart, but it also came with emotional/mental side effects, which I've never experienced with a prescription before. I feel super anxious and a bit paranoid, to the point of keeping me up at night. I'm on my 4th day of a 7-day dose, but today will be my last on this medicine. I've decided I'd rather risk getting the UTI again than deal with these side effects any longer. If it comes back, I'll definitely be asking my doctor for a different antibiotic. And I took it exactly as directed, with plenty of water."

For Kidney Infections "I was prescribed this antibiotic twice a day for 7 days because of an aching kidney infection I’ve experienced for a week. And by day 2, I could barely hold down food without the urge to vomit, and I was already experiencing an eating disorder before then. I also had chills, a low fever, with anxiety that nearly gave me panic attacks. My feet and legs were cold and numb, and I was sweating profusely. Then I started having trouble breathing because of chest pain, it caused me to which I found out was heartburn with shortness of breath. I stopped by day 4 since I was experiencing these awful symptoms, along with the fact that my kidney felt better anyway."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed this after going to get a checkup because I knew something was off, but I had no UTI symptoms. I have just spent the last 24 hours shaking, with a tremendous headache, nauseated, chilled, and with insomnia. I would not recommend this medicine to a sensitive female. I cried until 2 am and finally fell asleep. I have abdomen pain, bloating, which was not there before, and it feels like a yeast infection is festering. I am going to go back to my cranberry, water, and oregano oil methods. I also read about d-mannose, but that looks more preventative. Probiotic too."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Started Bactrim 800 mg DS on a Wednesday. Thursday afternoon had a 103 fever. Fever would reduce with NSAIDs. Fever has been present every day since. The major side effects I experienced were fever, chills, body aches, cough, loss of appetite, feeling dehydrated, severe fatigue, and change in urine volume. I thought maybe I had COVID, got a test. (No COVID.) Original UTI symptoms (kidney area pain) were gone by day 3. I’m on the last day of the script, and I will NOT take this again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "One of the worst antibiotics that I have been prescribed to treat my UTI. I am prone to UTIs and have had many antibiotics that have helped me immediately, and this one is the worst. It is day four, and some relief regarding the stinging while urinating, but I still feel major discomfort with the bladder and vagina. I have had migraines for three days now, my neck is tense and heavy, fever, body aches, and chills. Chest cold and hard time breathing, and very itchy! I was told to drink lots of water and keep hydrated, but I can’t. I have no appetite whatsoever and do not feel the urge to drink any fluids. Do not recommend anyone taking this for a UTI. You’ll feel worse."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I was prescribed Bactrim by my dermatologist for my acne, and I must say it was the worst experience. At first, I ignored the side effects, but I initially experienced loss of appetite, night sweats, shivers, and had trouble falling asleep. After one week of taking it, I experienced joint and muscle pain, which is ultimately the reason I stopped taking it. Such horrible side effects."

For Bacterial Infection "Using this drug was like living in a nightmare. It still remains to be seen whether it helped my prostatitis; I was given a 28-day course of 56 pills at a combined 960 mg tablet. But while using it, I had many profound negative side effects: extreme anxiety, racing thoughts, and pounding heart that did not respond to various self-soothing techniques such as meditation, breathing, or even a cold shower; insomnia to the point I didn't sleep but a few minutes a night for my last three days on the drug; various flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, fatigue, chills and hot flashes, weakness, and cognitive ability loss; and an out-of-body feeling. I stopped taking it after eight pills when I noticed the symptoms always ramped up 15-30 minutes after taking a dose. Before that, I didn't connect these insane symptoms to my new medication, but I probably should have because I had a similar reaction to another antibiotic, levofloxacin, a couple of years ago. Be very wary of this drug!"
