Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "So glad I visited and read all these reviews. I thought I was going mad! I'm halfway through a 5-day x 2 a day script and feel just awful - fevers, then freezing cold, aches, pains, and dull headache, and the nausea and reflux is like being pregnant (except I'm menopausal!). Hopefully, the UTI is ebbing and, like others, I can't wait to stop taking it in a couple of days."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for 5 days for UTI and did not feel any relief until day 4. But from day 2, I had side effects like burning pain of the scalp with the slightest touch and dizziness with fast head movements. From day 4 on, I had a fever with chills. Then, a couple of hours after the last dose on day 5, I developed a skin rash of red dots all over my torso, arms, and face, the dots grew larger and also spread to my legs and feet by the end of the night. I had to take prednisone and antihistamine to control the rash and take another antibiotic to treat my UTI that Bactrim only partially treated."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Dr. prescribed for UTI, this almost cost me my life. Migraines, chills, dizziness, chest pain, nausea, indigestion. It was so bad I ended up in the ER with cardiac-type symptoms. Long story short, I ended up having to do a heart cath, which turned out okay. Whatever you do, run the hell away as far as you can from this medication!!!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I have been taking Bactrim now for about a week and a half for a UTI and MRSA. I am sure it's working because the kidney pain has subsided, however, the nausea is so crucial it's like the worst nausea I've ever had in my life. Not to mention headache and chills. Ugh, I don't know if it's worth it."

For Bacterial Infection "I had an abscess. I got the generic type of Bactrim, sulfamethoxazole. I only took 3 pills total, in two days, each followed by moderate cramps and diarrhea. The second night after taking the 3rd pill, my lips and throat became swollen and had purple patches on them. The skin is thin and near splitting. I have white, patchy, slimy stuff in the back of my throat, which is thrush. My joints hurt, I have waves of chills that come on and can't get warm. It hurts to swallow, my tongue is swollen and sore also. The worst, however, is my mental state, feeling massive anxiety and temper swings at nearly nothing. I sort of had an outburst on my daughter and wife, and I feel terrible about it. I won't take this again. Now I'm taking Benadryl to reduce swelling."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "I have taken it before, and it seemed to clear my urinary tract infection up well. However, this last time, after my first pill (in the afternoon), I felt flushed, bad headache, chills, some pain inhaling breaths, and facial swelling the morning when I woke up, though it went down quickly."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Acne "I was suffering from acne since childhood. I tried Accutane, but it didn't work for me. I tried any kind of drugs and creams prescribed by a dermatologist, but nothing works. Recently, I went to one dermatologist at a hospital-based clinic, and she prescribed me Bactrim DS. I took it for a week, and suddenly I just felt terrible. I had a severe fever and chills, and after two days, I noticed the rash all over my body. I thought it was measles. But, ouch! Tachycardia, dehydration for just a week. When I visited my dermatologist, she said it was a Bactrim allergy. The bad thing is she had to send me to the emergency room. I was so happy at first because Bactrim cleared my acne in just a week, but in the end, it’s a horrible feeling that I almost died."

For Prostatitis "This antibiotic sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim has been the absolute worst drug/medication I have ever taken in my entire life. From what I have seen in these reviews and from my personal experience, it should be a crime to state that the only side effect is diarrhea and that all other side effects are 'rare.' Not only did I have a constant 101-102 temperature, fever with chills, nausea, and headache, I also got to experience about 70% of the so-called 'rare' symptoms: neck and cheek swelling, constant face and chest itching, muscle pains, sharp pains, not soreness, tight chest, joint pains that are sharp, restless and sleepless nights, and so much more. I'm not sure if my condition was worse for the rest of my life or the 10 days of hell on this antibiotic."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Kidney Infections "I was diagnosed with kidney infections on Monday night. They gave me the Bactrim and sent me on my way home, and I got the prescription the next day. Tuesday, I spent the day throwing everything up. I couldn’t hold my water down. Wednesday, I slept all day and spent my time running back and forth to the bathroom for a shower when I got chills or sweats. I was throwing up even what I didn’t have in my stomach. Thursday, I’m starving, but the look of food disgusts me. Ten days prescribed, I’m on day three of treatment, I don’t know how long I’ll last. Also, I have this extreme pain in my calf muscles for some weird reason, and they don’t go away."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I had a facial abscess lanced at urgent care and prescribed Bactrim in case it was MRSA. I took it for about 8 days twice daily and lost my appetite, got headaches, and felt anxious and depressed. I continued to get cystic acne behind my ears, mostly the ear by the abscess that was drained, so the dermatologist PA told me to take Bactrim for another month, once a day. I took it another 12 days until I began having knee joint pain and achiness in my legs like I've got the flu. Oh, I was also getting the chills. I've been off it 3 days and still having very bad leg pain that's caused me to have a panic attack and extreme mood swings and depression. I know it's from this antibiotic... I'm praying that the pain goes away as it is debilitating and I was a healthy 30-year-old prior to this."

For Bacterial Infection "Was given this after going to the doctor. 1st dose felt nauseous, chills, hot flashes, stomach pain, migraine in the center of my head that won't go away. Was able to nap a few hours. 2nd dose same symptoms plus no longer able to sleep, anxiety, can't focus, sweats, buzzing in my head, no appetite, funny taste in my mouth, muscles hurt, feel sick, thirsty. 3rd through 6th doses no changes in side effects, but these also occurred: tongue swollen, don't feel like myself, seeing flashing lights when I close my eyes, fever, runny nose, stiff neck, confusion, vertigo. The original problem went away but came back around the time for each dose. Masks the initial problem. Don't know if it's working. Feel like I'm dying."

For Bacterial Infection "Pill 3 was the worst night. Burning sore throat down to my navel. I wished I could let the fire out if I opened my mouth! Abdominal pain, so bad I thought of going to the ER at 1 am. Chills got worse, so did the stiff neck, arms, legs very heavy, cough, headache, runny nose, and oh my God, the leg cramps brought me to tears. Up all night every hour on the hour, throwing the last 7 tablets out!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Diverticulitis "Have been on Bactrim now for 9 days with the 10th day almost completed, for an intestinal infection. Around day 7, I started feeling achy with a mild fever and chills. I’ve also had some gastrointestinal uneasiness, headaches, and insomnia. Basically, the intestinal issue is resolved, so Bactrim did its job. But others should be aware of the side effects. I have to admit I had not fully informed myself about them. Side effects can be very uncomfortable, and I suppose that if they were much worse, they even could be dangerous."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Urinary Tract Infection "Horrible! I will tell you it does work for a UTI. My UTI is almost gone, but the side effects are terrible. I was doing fine with the medication the first day, and now today is my second day. Currently, I am at work, jittery, having chills, I had two panic attacks, and today I just started having migraines. I am only on this for three days. I have two more pills left. Tried to make it, but I don't think I can handle this while working. Not so much dizziness for me, just making me really tired. I will be staying on Cephalexin."

For Urinary Tract Infection "At first, it was fine, I didn’t have any symptoms. I’ve never had a reaction to medication ever. I got really sick out of nowhere: fever, chills, sore muscles, dizziness, vomiting, sore throat, diarrhea, painful headaches, and behind-the-ear throbbing pain. Worst shit I ever took. I only have 4 days left, but I gave up. There’s no way I can finish this! Oh yeah, my UTI was not clearing up either!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim twice a day for 10 days. The first day was okay, by the 2nd day, I had a bad case of nausea and itchiness. On the 3rd day, nausea, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, and feeling cold along with insomnia. I stopped taking it and gradually I'm feeling like myself. I continued Keflex until the infection healed. I won't take it again. It's not worth the misery, in my opinion."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "First 2 1/2 days this seemed to be working for me. 3rd day developed a major headache and nausea. By day 4, I felt a bit feverish, but nothing major. By day 5, my entire body ached and I just wanted to sleep. The fever, although not high, continued to go up and down. By day 6, I felt just as bad, no headache, but nausea, feverish, chills, etc. Day 7, enlarged lymph nodes, stopped taking it. Day 8-9, severe rash all over body. Seeing now possible signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I am on my second day of Bactrim DS, and about halfway through the day today, I started feeling nauseous and sweaty while I was driving. After not even 2 minutes of having these symptoms, I vomited all over my car multiple times! I have been sweating with goosebumps and chills since my first dose. I will never take this medication again."

For Kidney Infections "I waited too long to see my doctor as I had an upcoming appointment in 3 weeks. I knew something was up with my kidneys. The sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim combo is helping, it’s fighting the infection. It’s the only prescribed med I’m on. Taking Tylenol in conjunction helps with fever and chills. Started med on Wednesday and Thursday was the worst day, felt like deep cramps within both kidneys. It is Saturday, I’m improving but not able to resume normal activities. I have 5 days left to take of this med. I can guarantee that I will completely take all, as prescribed. Advise: Don’t wait to see your doctor or clinic, etc. Take the meds as prescribed. Drink plenty of water. Rest, acetaminophen (Tylenol). Urinate frequently."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Infection "I have not had a good experience using Bactrim. The first day's dosage caused no side effects, however, by day 6, I had headaches, severe heartburn, nausea, chills, severe muscle weakness, depression, anxiety, and generally felt unwell. I took each dose with a full glass of water and a full stomach, as recommended. I am supposed to take this for 4 more days, but I will call my doctor for an alternative treatment."

Thus far, I have experienced an upset stomach, diarrhea, chills, sweats, and insomnia. The boil has gotten smaller, but there is still fluid in it. Hope it goes away soon!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "Ugh, this medicine is the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. I know everyone is different, but my experience was brutal! Horrible dizziness, nausea, anxiety through the roof, chills, sweats, memory loss. I literally freaked out on the nurse helping me. I screamed, “I’m having a stroke!” It was like something came over me, like an out-of-body sensation. I got really dizzy, and it went blurry. Scary symptoms to have! Hopefully, nothing lingers. My doctor has to look up side effects because he said he didn’t know of many and was surprised to find nervousness, psychosis, and hallucinations being possible. Freaky experience! So now I am out on clindamycin for the MRSA."

For Urinary Tract Infection "In 2013, I had the loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to remove cancerous cells from my cervix. Newer area, new doctor, abnormalities are found again. Two months of scare and tests, I'm told the cancer is 'fine.' I have a cyst on my ovary. They want to remove my uterus due to it making my bladder incontinent, and I had a urinary tract infection. I was prescribed this sulfamethoxazole. So after all the drama, I start feeling really nauseous, dizzy, spinning (fear of falling down), no appetite at all, uncontrollable severe itching and red welts (tiny blisters all over - mainly face), severe headaches, severe weakness, tiredness but couldn't sleep, fever, flashes of chills and sweats, twitchy, restless feeling in feet and legs, painful gas and runny stool, red eyes, my whole body aches!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Bacterial Skin Infection "I was prescribed this for a staph infection of the skin. The first few days, I was very fatigued and had mild neck pain. Then, on Day 7 of 10 that it was prescribed for, I started breaking out in a rash on one thigh, and then it spread throughout the day and was on my chest and arms by the night. I was also freezing! I took 2 Benadryl that night, then woke up the next morning, and the rash was all over from my neck all the way down to my ankles, front and back, and I was cold all day! I went to urgent care and ended up getting a steroid injection at urgent care, then had to take a high dose of prednisone for 3 days after that. After steroids were started, I noticed that the joint pain went away, and I also was swollen from the rash."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for Prostatitis "Bactrim cured my prostatitis within two weeks, however, I had to stop taking it earlier than prescribed because I discovered I was allergic. I noticed flu-like symptoms, including chills, fever, and horrible muscle aches. On top of that, I developed a head-to-toe rash that itched like crazy. Imagine being sore and itchy at the same time. Luckily, all of this subsided within a few days of quitting Bactrim. Since the antibiotic kills bacteria everywhere, I noticed I had flawless skin for about a week. But that didn't last. The bacteria came back with a vengeance, and I developed the worst acne of my life. I'm now taking doxycycline and using expensive creams to combat this. It's been two months since I stopped Bactrim, and I am still breaking out!"
