"I've had really bad acne since I was 12, and now I'm 14. I've been taking it only for a week, and it's already working. Finally, I have no shame in showing off my face in school, well, not too much showing off."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have had acne for about 4 years now, and I started Bactrim about 2 years ago. When I first started, my skin looked amazing, I was almost cleared up in a month. After about a year of being on it and my skin was doing well, we went down to half a pill. About 6 months passed, and my skin started to break out again, so we went back to a whole pill. My acne started to spread all over my chest, back, and shoulders. He decided that we would start 2 pills a day. I recently just went back, and my skin was not doing well, and I'm about to start Accutane. I 100% believe I formed a resistance to the drug after being on it for so long. Bactrim works amazing for short periods of time, but in the long run, it was not successful."

"This drug has literally saved me. I was so low with my acne. I still have spots, but no way as bad as before. I've been taking this for 2 months. I didn't see results like everyone else has said in a couple of days, etc. I thought I'd stick to this, and I'm glad I did. I think a couple more months of this, my face will almost be clear. My acne scars are now my problem. I use Retin A, but I'm on the hunt for another treatment. I hope this continues to work for me, and please try this before the harsh drug Accutane :)"

"This medication saved my skin, and I couldn't be happier with it. When I turned 20, I started to get cystic acne that would swell so badly that I wouldn't leave my house because I was so embarrassed. For a year, I tried everything from high-end to drugstore acne products, I even tried birth control. Nothing worked. Within a week of taking Bactrim once a day, my skin had no cysts or little bumps! I have a sensitive stomach, and this medication did upset mine until I took it with milk and ate something light (cereal, bagel, granola bar). Always take it with food. I don't get any nausea if I take it with milk and cereal, so I hope this helps if anyone is experiencing nausea from this medication. Wish I had tried Bactrim sooner!"

"I started breaking out, getting cystic acne when I started high school in 9th grade (age 13), but around the end of 10th grade is when my face completely broke out. I started taking the normal antibiotics like everyone else does for acne, yet nothing worked till I went on Accutane for 5 months. It cleared up for about a year or less, and then I started getting minor breakouts again, so I started using topical cream that fixed it. Then, a few months later, cystic acne came back horribly worse. The dermatologist even got scared or shocked when he saw me. I told him I didn't want to go on Accutane because of the side effects, so I went on Bactrim for 2 years when I was 17, which cleared me up to almost no breakouts during the whole time on Bactrim. I'm 19 now, and Bactrim slowly stopped working completely, so I went to a new dermatologist, and I am taking Accutane with Bactrim now, so we will see how it goes."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I've been on Bactrim and Aczone 7.5% for about a month now, and my face is completely clear! I started noticing fewer breakouts the second week, and by the end of the third week, I had no new ones. I apply the Aczone in the morning before putting on makeup and then again at night after I wash my face. I'm not totally sure if it's the Bactrim or the Aczone that's clearing it up (maybe a combination?), but it's improved so much that even my bf mentioned that he noticed a difference this past week. I've also experienced no major side effects. My only concern is that once I slowly start to come off the medication, will the acne come back? Definitely give it a shot though if you've been struggling with acne and don't want to resort to Accutane!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I am 36, and I was given tetracycline a couple of years ago, it made me nauseous but only for an hour or so, then I’d be back to my normal self. Tetracycline worked wonders for my skin, but unfortunately, I became resistant to it a few months ago. I also tried minocycline, which was ineffective. I’ve been having a really bad breakout since discontinuing the tetracycline. Recently went on Bactrim, I’ve been on this for about 3 days, and wow, let me tell you, I feel real shitty. The body aches are painful, the nausea really comes and goes all throughout the day, no rash, which is a good sign, but if this feeling doesn’t simmer down, I won’t be able to continue this. It doesn’t look like there is any real solution for acne out there, my self-esteem is so low, and I feel helpless. I’m so scared to try Accutane due to the hair loss reviews... that terrifies me. I can tell how horrible I feel from the Bactrim that I won’t last on this for much longer!"

"I have been taking this medicine for over 3 weeks now for acne, and now my skin is worse than ever. Maybe it will take longer to work, but currently not seeing any improvement. I really hope it will start to work now because I am resistant to all the ‘tetracyclines,’ and trimethoprim is my last resort. I have been taking 200 mg twice a day."

"I had pretty severe side effects related to this medicine (I have no known problems with medications, so this was unusual). Symptoms did not appear until months of taking this medication. Side effects included: heart palpitations (like a 'fight or flight' response... frequently, without cause), nausea, and overall tiredness (my body felt heavy), depression. It took me a long time to figure out this was due to this drug. It was a really terrible few months for me. Side effects stopped within 2-4 weeks after discontinuing this medication. On the plus side, this medicine was the most effective for my acne. My skin really cleared up tremendously. Not worth it though."

"Worst medicine ever! It only took me a couple of days to figure out what was causing me to feel like I had the flu, and then I realized that it was this medication! I was so tired that I could barely move, my muscles were sore and cramping, I had a terrible headache, and I just felt like I was dying! No other kind of sickness or medicine has ever made me feel so bad! Never taking it again!"

"I started this medication a week ago, and I have already seen fantastic results! I went to the dermatologist thinking that she was going to put me on another medication that wouldn't work. I was pretty much hopeless. But within almost 3 days of being prescribed, I saw my skin clearing! I know what it feels like to have no hope that your skin will get better, but this worked so well for me. I highly suggest it. So far, I have no side effects. Loss of appetite is the only one I've noticed, which isn't bad at all."

"I took sulfamethoxazole all throughout high school and my first year of college, and throughout that time, my skin was crystal clear. No itty-bitty clogged pores, no papules, no whiteheads. Couldn't have been more perfect. Except for the fact, it made me incredibly nauseous in the morning. Also, it made me constipated, and whenever I did do a BM, it was mushy and watery. It also made me quite bloated. But ever since I was taken off this medicine for those reasons in Dec/15, my skin has been a wreck. I was put on minocycline, and it hasn't worked the same. If anything, this is the worst my skin has ever been. I'm thinking about asking my doctor to put me back on sulfamethoxazole and to just suffer through the nausea. What we do for beauty!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I started using Bactrim a week into December due to a hormonal explosion of acne from my birth control (due to a reaction). It cleared me up slightly after 1 week, but once week 2 hit, I broke out horribly, and on day 20, I discovered I was allergic to it. My face swelled HORRIBLY, I am literally unrecognizable. Bactrim has left me with worse acne than I started with. My entire cheeks are covered. Now left to resort to Accutane. Weird because I used to take this on and off in high school (I am now in college), and it worked wonders. I either developed a bacterial resistance to the drug or just became allergic over the years. I highly recommend it if you've never taken it before and aren't allergic or can make it past the first month. I guess we will see how Accutane works."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I started using Bactrim when I was going into my senior year of high school, and it worked wonders for my cystic acne. I took it on and off throughout my first year of college and then stopped completely a year ago. My acne kind of came back, and now I am on birth control, which has completely ruined my skin. I am starting Bactrim again this week, as I am now a junior in college and hope to see good results like before. My skin was the best it ever was when I was taking this, and I had no side effects."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have used this for about 3 weeks now, and I have more pimples now than when I started. The only thing I have noticed is that pimples are not as large when I am on this. I am going to keep at it for a few more weeks to see what happens. I have had this same response on other antibiotics."

"I must say that this is one fast and effective treatment for acne. I've had acne for many, many years, since I was a teenager, and now I'm in my mid-20s, and I literally started noticing results within a week. It's cheap enough, and through blood testing every 3 months to make sure all is well, I haven't experienced any side effects, thankfully. It's not receiving the full 10 treatment purely because I tried to reduce my dosage to see if my skin would manage, and within a day of doing so, my acne was back, so this is more of an acne band-aid, so to speak, but one that has seen my skin clearer than it has ever been. Plus, I can now eat a lot of previous trigger foods without any worries! Hello, DAIRY!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Started traveling and went off of normal acne medication. I had a huge flare-up of the most painful acne I’ve ever had. It was almost cystic for about 6 months. Within just the 1st week of taking this, people were noticing my skin clearing. This medicine was a miracle for my skin. It may be because my body has gotten used to it now (after a year), but unfortunately it doesn’t do much for me anymore. It keeps my face from exploding, but I still have pimples. Overall, this worked well and QUICKLY for me, which is especially rare with acne medication. Typically, acne meds make your skin worse for months before you see improvement, if at all."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Before trying Bactrim, I had attempted a number of treatments. The last I had tried before it was Accutane, which I took for 5 months and which benefited me only for a short while. After my acne returned, my dermatologist suggested I try something different and gave me a prescription for Bactrim. I was so happy as I didn't break out when I started it, and it had cleared the acne from my face for an entire year. This month, however, the acne returned, and it couldn't have done so at a worse time - I have planned a 2-month trip to South America with a group of friends. I can no longer rely on Bactrim and will need to find an alternative (I feel like I've tried every 'solution' there is)."

"This is an amazing antibiotic. I enjoy the mirror now. I have been using it for 3 weeks, and I no longer have pimples after struggling with a breakout for almost 6 months. I take 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. I use Ilotycin at night 3 times a week to remove spots. I have tried Accutane and Doxy, my acne got worse. Am hoping to have flawless skin by this summer."

"My son took this medicine for about a week. He ended up having a severe reaction to it that put him in the hospital for 3 days. He got a red, itchy skin rash all over his torso about the 8th day of taking it. He stopped taking it at that point and got a prescription for Prednisone from prompt care. Two days later, he woke up and his eyes were swollen. The day after that, he woke up and his entire face was swollen. We went back to prompt care and they transferred us to the emergency room. The hospital admitted him and kept him for 3 days because his reaction was so bad. All this just happened 2 weeks ago, and his rash is just now starting to go away, but now his skin is peeling and scarred. It was a horrible and scary experience."

"I'm 27 now. I had had acne for a while, it was okay, and I was able to deal with it. Once I turned 26, man, did it become ugly. I had never had big acne bumps, and at 26, I found myself with them. I went to a dermatologist and tried all other pills in one year. This sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim pill was the one that worked for me. I took it for about two weeks last year, then once my face got clean, I stopped. My face was great for about 6 months, then the acne came back. So I am on this pill again, and in just 3 days, my face is almost clean, I have just tiny bumps near my jawline. I will keep taking it for two months and then stop to see if I can do without it. I was told each time to take two a day, but I'm just taking one and doing fine. I will say not everyone has the same body and may not take well to this or have the same outcome."

"I tried a lot of different medications for my acne over the last few years, and this sulfamethoxazole & trimethoprim has been the only one to make a noticeable difference. I was only on it for three months, and in that time, my face cleared up so much, and I started feeling a lot better. My doctor has just taken me off them to try something else because he suggested that these aren't a good long-term solution as they just take away the bacteria rather than fix the problem. Other than this though, it is amazing, and I experienced no side effects. Super cheap too!!"

"I have suffered with acne since I was very young. I was on Accutane for around 4 years continually as every time I stopped, my acne would return. A few months ago, my acne returned with folliculitis. Tried all the antibiotics in the world, and nothing at all cleared it. I didn’t want to return to Accutane as I saw a private derm, it was incredibly expensive. Over the 4 years, I spent around £4000+, and the side effects were troublesome. I saw my GP, and after I explained my medical history for acne, he recommended sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Honestly, the drug is amazing. I was on 400mg twice daily, which was a high dose initially. After a month on this dose, I went down to 200mg twice daily. After 2 months, my skin was absolutely spotless. I’d become obsessed with my skin, checking it every 10 minutes, etc. Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim is an amazing drug, and I would recommend it to anyone over Accutane."

"I was on this about 2 years back. My acne was pretty bad. I would get it on my face, neck, back, and chest. This cleared EVERYTHING within 2 months. I ran out of prescriptions after about a year, and around 5 months, the acne came back even worse. I finally went back to the dermatologist a week ago, and already it is showing a difference. It made my skin flawless before, I'm sure it will do it again!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "This drug worked wonders for me. I took it for 3.5 years and had clear skin finally. But I got bacterial resistance and ended up with worse and more acne scars than I did have before. My dermatologist should have told me what to do at first signs of it becoming resistant. My advice is to make a plan in case that happens to you beforehand. It was great when it worked, but I was mad at my doc for not letting me know what could happen if it stopped working."
