Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I am 24 years old and have struggled with hormonal acne for the past year. I turned into a hermit. I tried a few things with my GP - changed my pill to Estelle - waited 3 months, but nothing changed, it only worsened. I tried many, many, many face washes, was prescribed Eryacne and doxycycline, which helped for a short period of time until it came back. I had had enough and decided to get a referral to a dermatologist - I wish I had done this sooner! He gave me Bactrim, which I was to take twice a day for 2 months as well as Epiduo gel. This combination was my savior! I am now down to 1 tablet a day for another 2 months, using Epiduo every second night. This is amazing and cleared up my acne, but it does make you VERY sensitive to the sun."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I've always had a problem with acne off and on since high school. In the past few years, it mutated into giant bug bite-like swelling mostly around my mouth, chin, and forehead. Sometimes actually causing a fat lip that had to be injected with cortisone. It was beyond painful and embarrassing. It just kept getting worse. I was put on Sulfatrim 800/160 mg. I took 1 pill an hour before bed with 2 glasses of water. I've been on it for 38 days. My skin has not had a breakout since I started this antibiotic. I have not had any side effects either. Today my dermatologist said that I made his day when he looked at my skin and said it is beautiful. I can't explain to anyone how it feels to be free of cystic acne after what I've gone through. My skin is glowing and looks so healthy now. I am being put on a lower dose of 400/80 mg. I will continue this med for another 2 months, then see where I'm at. I am so happy and grateful that this has worked for me. Pretty much changed my life."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I tried almost every topical an acne sufferer can get from drugstores, from natural to other kinds of drugs for acne, but none ever worked. My acne is a moderate to severe type of acne. I am not saying that this medicine will work for you the same way it does for me, but you should consider it when you talk to your doctor. I've been taking this medicine for over a year now, and I can't be any clearer. I used to get tiny whiteheads all over my face, like when I tried to pinch my skin, you could squeeze them out like small pieces of oil that became oxidized and yellow. Before I got this medicine, almost every day of my life, I'd have to deal with new bumps just after one healed. My face is scarred, but this is the best one I have tried ever."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have used Solydyne in the past, two different dosages. They worked at first, then stopped working. Again, they increased the dosage, even that stopped working. Then I was put on Bactrim. The nice thing about Bactrim for me was that it worked every time I used it. I was given a strong prescription of 100 mg twice daily, and then 50 mg twice daily for a year. The nice thing about Bactrim is you see it working. The acne where it used to be becomes dried out, and you feel that the meds are working. With others, I have seen it disappear and then appear again. With Bactrim, it was just really clean. I have recently started doxycycline, and it has not worked so far. Not a bit. It did seem to work the first week, but not anymore."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I've tried absolutely everything and was really depressed with my hormonal, cystic acne. I was feeling hopeless. I told my derm that I was set on Accutane, but he was persistent about me giving this a shot first. Within a week, my acne is 95% gone. TRY IT! I am so thankful for this medication. Don't give up hope :)"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I took Bactrim for a month, and I quickly saw the cystic acne disappear. So I started to reduce the dosage to 1 pill a day, then I stopped. In all, I was on the medication for a period of 2 months because I didn't like the idea of taking antibiotics for a large period of time. Recently, I've been having minor breakouts, but I'm paranoid. I am afraid to get filled with cystic acne again. So I decided to start retaking the antibiotics since I still have a couple of refills. Unfortunately, I don't have health insurance anymore, and I can't follow up with any Dr."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I've been taking Bactrim for about 2 months now, and my acne is no better or worse than before I started. I haven't experienced any negative side effects, but that doesn't really matter when I haven't experienced any effects at all."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "This medicine has done only good things for me. I have taken it for about 3 weeks now. It cleared up my moderately severe acne very quickly, no negative side effects. The only side effect I had was decreased appetite, which I was not opposed to, as I usually eat too much anyway!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have had bad acne since 6th grade, and I am now in 11th grade and started taking Bactrim. It is amazing. You take it once in the morning and once at night. I saw results in the first month. Now my face is clear. Just around my time of the month, I get maybe two pimples, but they go away fast! Just don't skip! You will break out and have to start over!"

"I have terrible, painful cystic acne. I have been on and off this medicine whenever my acne gets out of control. I have been taking it twice a day for the past two weeks, and my skin is all cleared up."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "It's the silver bullet! Well, for me at least. I can only add my highest recommendation for Bactrim to treat my cystic acne, the kind that produces cysts around 2-3 cm in diameter all over my body and face. I've been on Accutane and every other antibiotic there is, but Bactrim has saved me. It is hard on your digestive system, and I still haven't come up with a good solution for that yet, but I can certainly live with it if it means no more painful cysts that need to be cut out and operated on medically (no fun at all). I've always had cystic acne, but Bactrim seems to kill the bacteria that produce the cysts, so as long as it keeps working I'm happy."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Never had acne, especially in high school, I had the clearest skin. I started college and work, and TBH, I was very depressed. I got acne on my chin, then slowly on my jawline, and all over my face. I tried everything, nothing seemed to work. I really wanted to go on Accutane because my self-esteem and confidence were gone. I was ready to do anything to get rid of my acne. I went and visited a dermatologist, he prescribed me Bactrim with spironolactone. The first two weeks, I would say I kind of got a breakout, but then after like four weeks, my skin was clear, acne-free. I still got some scarring, but no active acne, which is good. One side effect I would say is that I felt very tired and sleepy. I would definitely say try this before going on Accutane."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "My 15-year-old son had terrible acne due to being inherited. We tried every facial wash and lotion out there. The dermatologist tried a couple of antibiotics and nothing seemed to work. Accutane was our next option, which I didn't want to do. A month ago, his primary doctor prescribed Bactrim for an infection, and we were shocked when it TOTALLY cleared his face and back up! We called the doctor's office, and he now takes it daily with no side effects! Such a blessing!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Didn't do anything for me. I still have severe acne like always. It's been two years, but no fix. Tried doxycycline, minocycline, and this. None of them ever worked. I also have super oily skin, and this medicine doesn't fix that. It only kills the bacteria, which in my case is not a big problem. Oily skin is giving me acne. Plus, I was applying erythromycin 2% on my face. Nothing happened. Took it for a month. Finally going on Accutane soon. It was the last resort for me."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Bactrim has been very effective for me, and I've taken it on and off for seven years. I have had no serious side effects (at least none which manifested as of now), and the Bactrim does a good job of controlling my acne. Side effects are a big deal in acne medication (Accutane dried my skin and tetracycline caused ear ringing). While I occasionally get a breakout while on Bactrim, the severity and frequency of the acne has decreased. On a side note, I've found my acne is most well-behaved with a low or no dairy diet."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Having acne for most of your teenage years into your early 20s is not fun. Being a 21-year-old who went through Doxycycline and Minocycline, I thought I exhausted all of my options. I saw a few dermatologists who pushed Accutane down my throat. I said no. I went to my family doctor and I've been on Bactrim DS for over 6 months now, and it is the best thing that has cleared up my acne. So powerful. I would highly recommend this medication."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I have horrible hormonal acne, and Bactrim has been the only systemic drug that has helped. Problem is, I took it for years, randomly when needed. After years of usage, oddly, I became allergic to it. I broke out in large red spots that were extremely sensitive. It's a serious allergy. I have permanent dark bruises all over my body, and it has been years since I've used it. If you haven't tried Bactrim, try it. It will work for you."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Okay, so I had suffered with acne ever since I hit puberty. I was a 'pizza' face, so to say. I had tried multiple things and thousands of dollars to try and get rid of my acne. Eventually, though, I found out I had PCOS, so yay! Hormonal acne. Anywaays, my dermatologist prescribed me Bactrim along with spironolactone. Within a week, I had a completely clear face. No acne at all. But unfortunately, after 3-4 weeks, I found out I was a part of the unlucky few who ended up being allergic to it. So sad. If I could ever take it again, I would in a heartbeat. But it has been about 6 months since I've been on Bactrim, and I am still pretty much clear with very few breakouts."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "The dermatologist put me on Bactrim DS, to be taken twice a day with food. No side effects in the first few days and did a good job at clearing up my face. Currently, I am on the 9th day and experiencing severe side effects. Fever, chills, extreme joint pain, muscle weakness, and overall sluggishness. Also experiencing difficulty breathing, a tight chest, headache, and dizziness to the point of almost falling over, for no reason. The most severe of the side effects is the joint pain. Can hardly take a step on my right leg and cannot lift anything with my right arm. Bactrim does its job, however, at the expense of your health. Please do your research before starting this drug!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "While using Bactrim, my acne cleared up very well, and I was very happy. Unfortunately, after a month, I found out I was allergic to sulfa, so I can't take it anymore. Sucks because it was the first thing I took that actually worked! Just my luck."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Ok, so I have dealt with acne my entire life, even in my 30s. I was given this med for another issue, and I noticed my skin is clearing up. I have been reading some of the reviews, and not to be judgmental, but I am shocked at how many people are using this med for 6 plus months. Transplant patients, it's a must (my mother is one), but to use this long term is not my cup of tea. With bacteria becoming more and more immune to everyday meds, what will they do when they have a severe infection like staph and it no longer works? Hospital bound on vanco, I know from experience. Trust me, my acne is horrible, and I truly understand the heartbreak, but risking immunity from an antibiotic is not worth it to me. Think long term. Just my opinion, God bless!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I had been a long-time acne sufferer, then I had my daughter. I seemed to have had less aggressive breakouts, but then suddenly I began to get cystic acne around my chin and lower face. It got to the point where I didn’t want to leave my house. I finally went to a well-respected dermatologist who put me on Bactrim temporarily before I could start the process for Accutane; suddenly my face began to clear up drastically within a week! I was extremely happy with the results and opted out of Accutane altogether. I really couldn’t believe that my cystic acne was disappearing right before my eyes. I also purchased a retinol and hydroquinone cream that my derm sold in his office that helped lighten up my scars significantly. Hope this helps. Good luck!"

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "The medicine worked so well on my acne. Not even 10 days after beginning the prescription, and my acne was already clearing up. Unfortunately, I had an allergic reaction to the sulfa in the medicine and was rushed to the hospital because the reaction caused the platelet levels in my blood to drop to extremely dangerous levels. I'm still searching for a medicine that works like this one did without the sulfa in it."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "I took this medication SMZ/TMP for acne/scars on my face. I had a very severe allergic reaction. My face was swollen and my lips. My hands swelled up. I had terrible pains in my wrists up to my arms and pain in my stomach/abdomen. This happened after taking it for around a week. My dad had to drive me to the emergency room because I couldn't swallow and was almost choking. I was so scared. I warn anyone going on this medication to think twice. I had no idea I would have an anaphylaxis reaction to it. Very serious. It was hell going through this, and I really thought I would die. I didn't know what was happening to me as I was choking in my sleep. My mom looked up the side effects, and that's when we found out it was a terrible reaction."

Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim "Late September of 2014, I began to get hormonal cystic acne around my mouth, cheeks, and chin. I tried a lot of different methods before finally reaching the end of my desperation. I went to the dermatologist, and he prescribed me Bactrim. I have seen nothing but great results-better than I could have hoped for. I had read plenty of reviews about Bactrim and read that many people started to see results within 3 months of use. I too saw major results within that time frame. Patience is the key when taking Bactrim, but from my experiences with it, I promise it will be what your acne-prone skin has been dreaming of!"
