For Bacterial Infection "You might lose your penis taking this if you're allergic. I took Bactrim for a severe ear infection. Bactrim itself is very fast and rids you completely of all symptoms. HOWEVER, it can be very unstable. On day 3 of my 800 mg/twice daily dose, I developed a fixed drug eruption to it, hence, I basically developed symptoms similar to that of a yeast infection, but the guy version. Normally, it started out as inflamed genitals, then I started developing severe blisters and spots on my penis. If you acquire similar symptoms as those listed, PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR YOU TRUST AND TELL THEM ABOUT THE sulfameth/trimethoprim. Other symptoms may be painful blisters and/or spots stemming from the mouth, underarm, and lips. Two out of three doctors I went to disregarded it as just inflammation. But finally, I had a third doctor realize that the medicine is giving me an allergic reaction and to not take Bactrim. As of now, my penis looks absolutely horrid and urination is giving me nightmares."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Bactrim for a possible UTI, and it seemed to relieve my symptoms after a few days. However, on day 7 out of 10, I started noticing red dots all over my skin. Over the period of the next day or so, the dots multiplied until it was a complete red rash all over my body. Not very itchy, but definitely unpleasant to look at. I also developed a low-grade fever of 100.6 and got headaches and felt very out of it. Went to the doctor and was told to stop taking the Bactrim because I was having an allergic reaction. Rash and other side effects went away within a few days. Looking back, there were probably other symptoms I should have noticed that pointed to me being allergic, but I didn’t think anything of them. Most people will have different experiences on this medication, so don’t start reading reviews and assume the worst. Talk to your doctor. I will say the Bactrim did seem to do its job, though, and I no longer have the UTI I was originally prescribed it for."

For Bacterial Skin Infection "I recently had a boil lanced and was prescribed Bactrim. About 45 minutes after taking the first dose, which was two tablets, I began to have a severe itch throughout my body. My tongue, throat, face, and hands started to swell. Had to be taken to the ER due to an anaphylactic reaction. I found out I am allergic to this type of medication. I am now leery of any type of new medication being prescribed."

For Acne "I (18F) was prescribed DS (800/160) twice a day with lots of water. I didn't know I was allergic to sulfa and was nervous to take such a high amount, so I only took one a day instead. After two weeks, I felt fine and there was small acne improvement, so I took two yesterday. Turns out, I'm allergic; I got rashes all over my body, the worst sleeping experience I've ever had, dizziness/fainting, swollen lymph nodes (I can't turn my neck much without pain), really aching muscles, tight chest, flushed/swollen face, and headaches. I asked my doctor and my mom (an RN) and was told sulfa allergies are commonly seen. The only good thing from it was I did see more improvement with the higher dose."

For Urinary Tract Infection "It works awesome. If you have problems with this medicine, it is probably due to being allergic to it, so stop taking it."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Bactrim gave me an allergic reaction within the first two days of using it. Thankfully, I noticed it quickly, so it wasn't too bad. My throat felt tight, I had a rash, and I just didn't feel well."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Broke me out in a horrendous rash (apparently I am allergic to sulfa drugs) and had to take a steroid for 5 days to get rid of it. And still had the UTI infection on top of it."

For Acne "I started using Bactrim a week into December due to a hormonal explosion of acne from my birth control (due to a reaction). It cleared me up slightly after 1 week, but once week 2 hit, I broke out horribly, and on day 20, I discovered I was allergic to it. My face swelled HORRIBLY, I am literally unrecognizable. Bactrim has left me with worse acne than I started with. My entire cheeks are covered. Now left to resort to Accutane. Weird because I used to take this on and off in high school (I am now in college), and it worked wonders. I either developed a bacterial resistance to the drug or just became allergic over the years. I highly recommend it if you've never taken it before and aren't allergic or can make it past the first month. I guess we will see how Accutane works."
