"I was prescribed 60 mg of prednisone for 5 days, then 40 mg for 2 days, then 20 mg for 2 days. This was for a bad skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to Bactrim. The rash cleared up within a few days. As soon as I finished my last dose, I developed painful muscle aches and spasms all over my body. I’m currently on day 5 of this. Went to my doctor, she said just to take ibuprofen. I do not recommend this drug at all and will never take this again. The painful back spasms are the worst at night!"

"Developed some skin irritation seemed to be 'Winter Dry Skin'. Visited a dermatologist and seemed to be confirmed. Agreed on using skin moisturizer. Constantly itchy and, unfortunately, the skin irritation area continued to grow. Called back reporting ongoing issues. Prednisone prescribed. 'Prednisone Tapered' 40 mg 3 days, 30 mg 3 days, 20 mg 3 days, & 10 mg 3 days. **Immediate results in 24-48 hours. The itching subsided. The redness and rash locations faded. Two side effects did show up; First three nights: 1) Skin burning sensation on upper arms 2) Stomach pain late at night through early AM, but each day subsided. Contacted the dermatologist regarding the side effects. They confirmed back that the side effects were common and that I needed to ride it out as long as no other issues. On the fourth day of treatment when dropping (tapering) down to 30 mg, the skin burning sensation subsided and the stomach pain did not return."

"I had surgery, and as soon as I got to the 5th day of my 6-day tapered pack, I started to see a rash develop. I thought it was from the adhesives used on the bandages and tape. Well, by day 7, I was popping Benadryl, and it was really doing nothing for the insane itching and rash that was growing everywhere. I had my husband pull back the sheets because I thought a spider was in the bed biting me or something. The rash was becoming lumpy and nodular to the touch. It looked as if I had mosquito bites and skin burns. My surgeon's assistant told me to go to urgent care. The urgent care doctor said, 'Yikes, that's angry, you need steroids.' I was put on 60 mg for 4 days, 40 mg for 3 days, and 20 mg for 3 days. I took my first dose the next day as my prescription wasn't available that evening after leaving urgent care, by nightfall, I wasn't trying to scratch as much. The next morning, 24 hours later, the rash wasn't as raised as it was initially. Day 2, I could still see red areas. Day 3, it's kinda gone."

"In my 50 years of experience with prednisone for various skin issues, it has been a miracle drug. If a secondary infection has developed, antibiotics should be taken, or the rash, eczema, whatever, will come back soon after you stop taking the prednisone."

"The dermatologist put me on 50 mg prednisone to taper off in 20 days for a poison ivy rash. My body reacted terribly to the pred…urination irregular; lots of abdominal distress; fatigue. After 4 days on the drug, the covering doctor got me down to 10 mg in just 4 days' timing instead of 20 days. Terrible drug to take, especially since poison ivy goes away on its own. The PCP diagnosed me with a stomach ulcer as a result of what he called “a helluva high dose” of prednisone. So then I had to go on meds for my stomach. I don’t ever want to take this awful drug again, nor will I ever return to that dermatologist."

"I had a little red spot on my chest. I noticed it Thursday night. By Friday, my entire chest and both my arms were covered in burning, itching, tingling hives. I took a lot of Benadryl and hydrocortisone, which did absolutely nothing. I went to the doctor today (Monday) at 8 a.m. He said it was a reaction to a medication. But I don't take any medication. He looked at me pointedly and said it looked like a reaction to something I inhaled. I was extra annoyed because I do not do drugs, I don't drink, and I don't smoke or 'inhale' anything. Finally, he said he didn't know why I had a rash and prescribed 5 mg of prednisone to be taken as a 'pack.' Took 6 today (as prescribed, tomorrow 5, and so on). Now I have a terrible headache and my rash is somehow worse. It doesn’t itch as bad, but it's spreading to my neck, and it still burns like the dickens. I'm going to get a second opinion tomorrow. So far, it's done zilch, and today was the highest dosage. Will update if by some miracle it works tomorrow."

"Started on prednisone 4 days after my poison ivy rash appeared. I don’t feel that it really helped much at all. The rash continued to spread and itch like crazy! I’m on day 10 of my prescription, and it’s just starting to dry up."

"I had poison ivy, and it was bad. I started with 40 mg for 2 days, 30 mg for 3 days, 20 mg for 2 days, and 10 mg for 1 day. After 2 hours of the first dose, the itch was relieved, blisters started breaking after day 2, the rash was getting better, and it was pure relief after the last dose. This is the only thing that has ever helped me. I wish I could keep it on hand rather than running to the doctor all the time. I had no side effects."

"I get poison ivy rash about once every year or two. This year it was in two places on my body. Went to the clinic in a drug store and was prescribed prednisone (10 mg tablets) and Triamcinolone cream. Instructions were to take 40 mg days 1 & 2, 30 mg days 3, 20 mg days 4, and 10 mg days 5 & 6. I took as directed and used the cream 2 to 5 times a day. By the third day it was on 4 places on my body, day 4, five places, and it continues to itch uncontrollably. This is day 6, and it still itches and is in at least 7 places. Like many others, I feel like the dosages were too low for me personally. I'm 6'3" and 185 pounds, which might have something to do with it. I have 20 more mg to take, but I'm afraid it's not going to do it. I'm still itching. Side effects included sleeplessness."

"I took it for about a week, and it worked much better than cetirizine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, which didn't seem to work on this in particular (I've had cetirizine work great for other stuff). IIRC, oral steroid side effects are mostly long-term, but it worked great for 5 days for me. The pink round TL / 175 tablets are WAY too bitter and don't give any delay for the bitterness, and the bitter flavor sticks to the roof of my mouth. I think this is just the pill manufacturer's fault, though, and not the drug, so I'm not taking off any points."

"I have a severely itchy rash that I don't know what the cause is. I was prescribed prednisone, and almost instantly, the itching was completely gone. It took a day or two for the visual look of the rashes to completely vanish. I'm wondering if the prednisone is healing the condition that has caused the itching and rashes, or if the prednisone is just hiding the symptoms. I just had a few minor side effects, such as being really thirsty, and if I took the medication later in the day, I would be awake longer. Nothing too dramatic."

"I developed an acute full-body rash after using an Old Spice body wash. The rash spread fast and got worse over the next few days when I tried to treat it at home. Got a prescription for methylprednisone for a week, which had no effect. My dermatologist suggested a two-week course of prednisone. I was TERRIFIED after reading all the side effects and waited another week before developing enough courage to try it. Once I took the first dose, I could see the dermatitis start to go down, and it improved with each day I took the medicine. It was the only thing that worked and a lifesaver. The dosage I was on was 60, 60, 60, 40, 40, 40, 20, 20, 20, 10, 10, 10, 5, 5. I think all the side effects I had initially were caused by my own anxiety of taking the meds (i.e., insomnia, nervousness)."

"I don’t even know what caused my rash. My doctor thinks I had an allergic reaction to some lotion or food, but it seemed to be symmetrical on my underarm area, upper back and butt, outer thighs, and calves. It felt so good to scratch, but the itch at night was horrible, I used ice bottles to rub. The prednisone worked quickly, and I also was prescribed an itch cream and antibiotics just in case. I also took Benadryl as needed. After completing meds, I was a little itchy on my lower back around my spine and stomach, maybe now it’s just dry skin. Hopefully my body will take over and complete the healing. I give prednisone a 9 out of 10. Moderate side effects, a small amount of head pressure, and I ate a little more than normal."
