For Pain "Game changer for those who have pelvic nerve damage from endometriosis, this works to get rid of 95% of my flare-ups. I can actually function and enjoy my life! Also, it gave me a major energy boost, post-induced menopause. I take a low dose of 10 mg each day before bed. Ongoing 2 years now and don’t need to up it yet. My endo specialist recommended it to me, I am so pleased."

For Depression "I have been taking this for 2 years now and have found it helpful in a few ways. It has stopped my panic attacks for the most part, I get a few here and there. My overthinking has stopped altogether. The only thing I don't like about this medicine is that I have to be asleep within 30 minutes after taking it, or I will be up all night. For some reason, it causes my brain to become very active after 30 minutes. When I do go to sleep, I have very vivid dreams that seem almost realistic."

For Pain "To those of you who are having nightmares, they will go away. I had them so bad but it worked so well for the low back neuropathy. I was finally able to walk again. My back kills me. I take 30 mg throughout the day now. Taking it with tramadol decreases the effectiveness of the drug. Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant. It blocks the receptors in the cerebellum so pain signals cannot be received. This is not FDA approved because being an antidepressant when one is depressed can be very risky and cause serious side effects. For those of you who are waking up on this medication, you could be low on serotonin and those that are falling asleep you could have too much. It will also make you very constipated. Be careful."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was having bad pain and discomfort in my abdominal area and testicle. This went on for 5 months. I saw several doctors and had an MRI, ultrasound, blood tests, you name it, I had it. Finally, after doing my own research, I asked my doctor to put me on 10 mg. After about 3 days, I started to notice a difference, and after a week, about 95% of my pain was gone. This med worked wonders for me and saved my life! I went from only being able to eat plain chicken, potatoes, and spinach to being able to eat anything I want. I have been on this med for about 2 months now. I do not have any side effects to speak of. Everyone is different and your results may vary. Give it a try, but try and stay at 10 mg if taking for pain."

For Neuralgia "I have been taking this for Idiopathic Small Fiber Sensory Neuropathy. Experienced chronic nerve and muscle pain shortly after a flu-like illness. Was diagnosed with late-stage neurological Lyme Disease by a naturopathic doctor. Neurologist disagreed and diagnosed me with idiopathic small fiber sensory neuropathy. After several MRIs, blood tests, antibiotics, muscle relaxers, gabapentin, a nerve conduction study, a spinal tap, acupuncture, and massage therapy sessions, this medicine has helped the most and with the least amount of side effects. Started at 10mg and slowly increased to 60mg over a six-week period. At 60mg into my eighth week, I sometimes feel underlying neuropathy. But I can function nearly as well as before the onset of all these problems. So far, so good."

For Migraine Prevention "After being diagnosed with vestibular migraines about a year ago, I resisted taking any medications. The dizziness and feeling unwell caused depression as I was afraid to go anywhere and get a major dizzy spell that would make me also have symptoms of a stroke (numb face and arm and difficulty speaking). I started taking Nortriptyline and stopped after a few days as I was so tired and felt nauseated. My doctor told me to give it a go for a solid month and I'm so glad that I did. After about three weeks I started feeling so much better. Less episodes and when they came on, they were very mild. I'm only taking 10mg but plan to increase to 20 to see if even more benefits are seen once I get the ok from my doctor."

Nortriptyline for Pain "Cycled off opiates after a severe multi-trauma accident onto a Pamelor/amitriptyline combo. Worked very well. Definitely get yourself some eye drops, though. Needed the brand name, because the generic gave me cardiac arrhythmias. I am very impressed with this drug."

For Migraine Prevention "Since being on Allegron 35 mg now (Nortriptyline in the UK), I started on 10 mg, my migraines and even headaches have massively subsided. In the past 4 months, I’ve only had 2 migraines. Previously, to taking this medication, I was having anywhere between 5-6 migraines a month, some months I was having 2-3 every week. Very pleased with the result. Much happier at work and home. Enjoying quality time with my kids and husband."

For Pain "I've had a lot of pains over the past few years due to a computer-centric lifestyle. My rear shoulder/shoulder blade pain started to become unmanageable with my Lyrica + Tramadol. Most of my pains are nervy/burning. I decided to try Nortriptyline. Started with 10mg and worked up to 100mg after months (started working at 25mg). It saved my life at that time when I was miserable. It wasn't 100%, and had a bunch of mild side effects, but made things manageable. Side effects: weight gain (huge appetite), urinary retention, dry nose/mouth, some drowsiness (bad at first but got better), reduced motor control (jerks), orthostatic hypotension. Trying to stop to see if pain comes back, and so far so good (side effects have reduced, especially appetite)."

For Pain "I’m impressed. The pain of arthritis was relentless, and I thought it would never go away. After 10 years, finally a neurologist helped and prescribed nortriptyline! After figuring out what time of day worked for me (5 pm), because taking it at bedtime would keep you talking to yourself all night long! I can finally get sleep and no pain. Yes, dry mouth comes with it. Try taking ACT lozenges, it helps!"

For Migraine Prevention "I have suffered from migraines since I was 3 years old (I am 58 now), and I only get a few a year. Then in 2002, my migraines went from bad to worse. I average about 4 a week. I have tried so many meds and combinations of meds, and they made the migraines more tolerable for a while. I even tried Botox. I saw a new neurologist on April 4, 2013, and he asked me to try nortriptyline 10mg at bedtime, increasing to 20mg after a week. I have had only 2 migraines since Apr 4, and the pain is mild to moderate. I am hoping for more improvement. So far, no side effects at all."

Nortriptyline for Migraine Prevention "This is month 3 and the headaches I lived with for many years have vanished with a 30 mg dose every night. I sleep well. Dry mouth is tolerable and treated with an oral rinse. I never thought I could feel this good!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I experienced abdominal pain due to IBS for years. These pains were present no matter what I ate. While these pains were at their peak, I could hear gurgling in my stomach area, therefore, I knew they were gas-related. Doctors tried every test known but couldn't find anything wrong. I had nearly given up hope. The only thing that seemed to help at all was activated charcoal. One day, a nurse practitioner prescribed me nortriptyline to trial. She told me that it wasn't for IBS, but it may help with some of its symptoms. Within a week, my pains went away and have been gone now for 2 years. I take one pill every night before bed. I am another who will say that nortriptyline has changed my life."

For Pain "I was prescribed Nortriptyline 50 mg at night for back pain and sciatica in 2012. It helped me sleep with no pain. I did have weight gain, dry mouth, constipation, decreased urination, and heartburn. In 2014, I had a right hip replacement. In 2019, most of my chronic pain was gone. My doctor lowered my dosage to 25 mg at night per my request. After two months, I have finally stopped Nortriptyline. I have more energy, have lost 13 lbs, and my memory and concentration have improved. I sleep all night and feel energetic when I wake up. After seven years, I hope to never have to take this drug again."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I suffered from debilitating IBS and was on the brink of having to leave my job on disability as a result. I also had developed severe anxiety. After over a year and many trips to a gastroenterologist, I went to a psychiatrist to treat my IBS-induced anxiety, who prescribed nortriptyline. It was a lifesaver. I have been on it for 2 years and am completely symptom-free. Truly a miracle drug for me. The only reason for a 9 is that on the two occasions when I forgot to take the medicine, I felt very sick. It must be taken EVERY day."

For Pain "This medication has greatly improved my quality of life! I have chronic tension headaches every day and all day unless I take 25 mg of my Pamelor. I take it every night (because it does make me sleepy), and if I forget, my headaches start right back up around 3 pm the next day. One downfall is that I seem to crave snacks much more since I've been on this drug. I'll take that side effect over chronic headaches."

For Pain "Twice I was prescribed this medication as an alternative to real pain medication because doctors are so badly in fear of the DEA because of the so-called 'opiate crisis.' I have two crushed discs in my back. I received this medication years apart, and both times within the first month I noticed sexual dysfunction, which grew worse. I quit the medication the first time, and gradually things returned to normal. The second and most recent time I noticed a problem and quit the medication, but it was too late, things have never returned to normal. By sexual dysfunction, I mean inability to achieve and maintain an erection and shrinkage in size of genitalia. I can't believe that this problem is not reported by other people unless they are embarrassed to do so."

For Pain "I have radiculopathy (cervical and thoracic spine) and was prescribed nortriptyline for acute flare of disc/nerve pain due to bulging discs. As a doctor myself, I was cynical that tricyclics can be used for acute pain (general consensus is chronic pain and long-term use), but my GP insisted I could take it acutely and stop abruptly afterwards. I have found it to be superb for the pain relief; the first dose was the first time I slept through the night (previously was woken by pain at 4/5 am). Due to its very long half-life, it seems to continue working until late afternoon the next day when I feel the pain return. Within 2 weeks of taking it, I have been able to make my first gym visit in 6 months. The only downside I have noticed is when I feel the acute flare is over and stop taking it, I feel low in mood/depressed. I also find myself awake at 2 am (not from pain or anxiety, just not tired). So I do worry about becoming dependent on it for sleep and having low mood as a withdrawal effect. For the pain itself, though, I absolutely rate it."

For Pain "I was given nortriptyline by a pain doctor 7 years ago. It did help somewhat with the pain. However, the side effects have been giving me problems ever since. I have problems concentrating, but worse than that, I daydream constantly. I can't shut it off. It lasts for hours. It is like it turned on a daydreaming switch in my brain, and I can't shut it off. I went off of it expecting it to stop. It never has. It gets more unmanageable. I do not know what to do."

For Pain "I'm 34 years old, military for 10 years as a grunt so automatically pain in every joint possible. I've also had two serious incidents in combat and two vehicle accidents in the states. I have been on everything I think, no help so far and recently 3 months ago put on stepped into nortriptyline 50 mg along with gabapentin. I must say I'm a bit better as I'm not on bed rest as I used to not be able to get up. I have also been forced to carry a Tens unit which helps with spasms along with Robaxin and at times have to take Norco when it gets bad. I'm hoping for the best and hoping to just be on one pill or none soon. Oh, and therapy weekly. So far I can only say: I think nortriptyline helps."

For Pain "I started taking this medication after neck surgery C5-C6. This helped me with sleep and function throughout the day. I went off after I was back to normal. Just recently, I had to go back on because I now have a bulging disc at C4-C5. Without this, I could not do my job. The pain is tolerable, and I still have numb fingers. I do think it is a good medication to try and see if it works for your nerve pain."

For Pain "I took the first dose at night because my doctor said it may cause sleepiness. I woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible headache and insomnia. I decided to try a second night. This time, no headache, but still insomnia. Last night I took my tenth dose, and I am awake two hours after falling asleep, then having a horrible, horrible nightmare about sexual situations, being part of murders, and my son being kidnapped by a killer clown. I know that sounds dumb, but it was extremely realistic, and now I can't go back to sleep. I will call my doctor in a few hours to discuss tapering off and quitting this medication altogether. My pain has not been relieved at all (even if it had, I could continue with the insomnia and graphic nightmares)."

For Depression "I have taken nortriptyline for over 20 years and had suffered no side effects. I suffered from depression and had several hospitalizations. I did begin to work again, but after 6 years, I moved from the Midwest to California to join my adult daughter. It was not an easy move. This medication allowed me to sleep through the night and be able to concentrate at work. I am so glad that I was able to function more comfortably since that time."

For Depression "I had suffered with depression and addiction my whole life because I was self-medicating. I was officially diagnosed with postpartum depression after my second child, and after trying a couple of other medications, I was put on Nortriptyline. At first, every time my dose was increased, I would feel off, almost sick, for a day or two, but after that, all balanced out. I can’t tell you how much of a life changer this medication has been. It’s not that I never get sad, it’s that I never fall into that deep, dark pit anymore. People with depression know what I mean. I feel like what I think a ‘normal’ person feels like. I’ve been on it for 6 years. Life is not perfect, but it is so much better. If I could meet the creators of this, I would give them a big hug."

For Pain "I have Stage 5 CRPS and have been taking 75mg of Nortriptyline (generic for Pamelor) at bedtime for a few years now. I feel that I have been taking it long enough to say for sure that it helps with my treatment. I recommend this drug, but everyone is different and we all respond to medication differently. I hope Nortriptyline gives you the same hope in your treatment that it has given me."
