Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I’m 56 years old and have never had a problem with antibiotics. Prescribed Macrobid 2x a day for 10 days as I had my third UTI in five months. UTI symptoms quickly vanished, BUT by day 5 I couldn’t think, had zero appetite, headaches, and a sore throat - assumed virus. Day 8, my face and neck began to swell, sudden SEVERE back pain, fever, teeth chattering, vomiting - saw the doctor, test showed kidney function off/dehydration, though I constantly had fluids. 3 days off - still sore throat, tired, but my head is clear and energy/appetite returning. Another kidney function test next week. PS this is NOT only for people with allergic reactions - never again!"

For Bladder Infection "Started nitrofurantoin on Friday. After the fifth dose, I started with a headache, chills, and flu-like symptoms. Then severe low back pain, and I thought this moved to my kidneys. Took two more doses and went to my doctor on Monday with insane low back pain and joint pain down my body. I thought maybe I had the flu. When I told the nurse my symptoms, she said, 'It's the medication, your urine shows no infection now.' The doctor confirmed and changed the medicine after telling me her patients that react this way look and feel like they have the flu. Today is day five, and I still have bad low back pain. I wonder how long it will last because it's horrible. Doctors should warn their patients."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have had regular urinary tract infections in the past but had a few years without them. I then started feeling the onset on Friday morning, and by Friday evening, it was full-blown. I went to the doctor and was prescribed Nitrofurantoin. To start with, I didn't notice the symptoms as they merged with the pain from the urinary tract infections and were quite mild, but with each dose, I am feeling worse and worse. I have the chills, sweating, headaches, disorientation, and constant waves of nausea. The doctor warned me that my pee would be discolored, and that was it. I am considering coming off these pills only 2 days into a 7-day cycle, as for me, the side effects are almost worse than the UTI."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Omg... I have been so sick since I started this medicine. I have been lying in bed for two days straight with a headache, fever, chills, sweats, throwing up, can't eat anything. I am a mother of two, and I literally don't know what I'm going to do if this doesn't go away... their dad goes back to work tomorrow. Ughh pray for me! Just ask your doc for something else because this is garbage."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Horrible. After two, I came down with a fever (102.6) and awful chills. The worst was the body aches - in particular, my upper back. My gut told me it was the medicine and not a sudden case of the flu. I went off immediately, and within 15 hours felt 100% myself again. Everyone is different, and this drug is not for everyone."

For Bladder Infection "I'm trying to be as objective as possible. I was prescribed for a bladder infection. I began to feel relief from my painful urination after day 3. I am currently on day 4, and I must admit the side effects that I have been experiencing are fatigue, tension headaches (primarily on the left side near my ear), hot flashes, cold flashes, body aches (not quite as bad as the flu, but still achy), neon orange-colored urine, nausea, and just general malaise. I still rate high because my symptoms, in my opinion, were far worse than the side effects. Leaving work early today to try to sleep this off. Hopefully, the next week and 3 days aren't any worse. Hope this helps someone."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This is the third time I have tried Macrobid and the worst. High fever, chills, sweating, nausea, and terrible headache. I spent the whole day and night in bed. This is the very last time I will take this. My doctor did not think this terrible pill would cause a fever in spite of me telling him it did twice before. I told him I am off this pill and am now waiting for the culture. I will not ever be taking this again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Horrible reaction. I took 2 doses for a UTI and got a fever, chills, body aches, extreme headache, and pain in my chest. It hurt to breathe in like I had pneumonia, I couldn't take deep breaths. I stopped the medication, and the effects slowly wore off over the next few days. Never again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This antibiotic cleared up the urinary tract/bladder infection very quickly but gave me the most severe headache of my life. In fact, it wasn't a headache, it was a brutal pain in my head that lasted for 3 days. I also have chills, and my extremities feel cold. Otherwise, not too bad."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Took this medication about a year ago, and it worked wonderfully. I developed a UTI again and was prescribed it again. I took the first tablet and went to bed. I woke about an hour later with chills and uncontrollable shaking. I ended up in the emergency room. The doctor took me off this medication and prescribed Keflex, which worked well for me. I will not take nitrofurantoin ever again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This has been the worst experience of my life with any antibiotic. I took my first pill about 8:30 p.m. last night. Two hours later, I started having chills. All throughout the night, I had the sweats and the chills, and my stomach felt a little messed up. I got up to get ready for work this morning and started having severe diarrhea. Had to call out because I couldn’t get off the toilet. It’s now almost 1 p.m., and I feel awful. Still having diarrhea, slight headache, my body feels so weak and like I was hit by a truck. I wish I never took this pill, I feel like I poisoned myself."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Unless I have an illness, then I do not recommend these antibiotics. I started taking them and immediately became so ill. Shivering, chills, intense nausea, and the sensations in my hands and feet are really worrying. After not taking them for 3 days, I still have side effects. It’s actually been quite scary."

For Bladder Infection "I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin for a bladder infection. My first day of taking this medicine, my feet and hands became so very cold, and I could not control the chills. My hands became very pale. It felt like frostbite, like there were pins and needles in my fingers. I also became very lethargic and nauseated. I also had very intense pain in my lower back. I stopped taking them. I waited a few days and I took it at night before going to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night with the same chills, numbness, and tingling in my fingers and toes, nauseated and tired. This time, I contacted my doctor, and she advised me to stop taking the medication. I won't take this medication ever again."

For Bladder Infection "I took one nitrofurantoin tablet as soon as I collected it from the pharmacy. A few hours later, I felt the pain from my bladder infection ease off, which was brilliant. Then later that evening, I took another tablet about 2 hours after I started to feel achy, and my muscles started to hurt. The next morning, I was lifeless, I couldn’t get up out of bed all day. I took the morning tablet, and it knocked me out for most of the day. Achy, fluey, I got shivery, burning up with the worst fevers ever. I couldn’t even touch my body, it hurt that much. Sleep helps it. I've been drinking water as much as I can. I have 3 more tablets to take, let’s hope it clears up for good."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I took Macrobid a few months ago for my UTI. Worked great. No side effects. This time after getting a UTI again, I was prescribed Macrobid again, but this time I'm getting all the side effects: fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, nauseated, etc. I will probably stop using it now. My UTI does feel a bit better, though."

For Bladder Infection "I want to amend my comment below! In hindsight, I have realized that it is a kidney infection causing those symptoms, NOT the antibiotic! If it wasn't for the antibiotic, I probably would have had to go to the hospital, it was lucky I had just taken it so the shivers and fever stopped after about 12 hours. I am back on nitrofurantoin, and the pain in my back, legs, and side has almost gone. I'm all for treating a bladder infection naturally, but you have to be mindful that it does not spread to your kidneys because that can be a dangerous situation. I wonder if some of the similar experiences below were because the bladder infection had developed into a kidney infection, not because of the drugs."

For Bladder Infection "After having taken Nitrofurantoin for 10 days, the side effects occurred a few hours later. First: hands itching, next day, itching under the armpits and pubic area, saw no rash. Itching behind the ears, itching at the center of the hairline in the back, upper and lower back, front of neck, blisters on my right shoulder, a few hives on my back, chills, severe neuropathy in feet and hands (almost unbearable burning and itching). Rashes on my neck (in front), at the large chest area, above the breasts, chest pain on and off."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This is my first time leaving a comment on a drug on this website. I'm just here to relax anyone who gets prescribed this medication. This medicine did give me the chills, tiredness, joint pain, and nausea, but it did what it was supposed to do. Got rid of that same UTI that I had that just wouldn't go away, which is dangerous. I was given 2 rounds of Bactrim first. I felt very sick from the UTI anyway, so feeling off from the Macrobid made no difference. Be happy it isn't ciprofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolones you were prescribed, which is what these doctors try to push now when patients want a switch from the med that seems would work best after a culture test. Some of them don't know that the FDA put out warnings that it shouldn't be prescribed for conditions like this, for very serious reasons. You have been warned."

For Urinary Tract Infection "After eating food, I took one dose. Within a few hours, forced to bed, chills, projectile vomiting, and horrible diarrhea. Back to bed, chills continued, then horrible abdomen pains so bad, I wished to die. So not me. It was impossible to move. By morning, severe headache which lasted many days, pains in neck and Achilles tendon lasting for days. Unable to eat, slept 12 hours daily for a week. Checking online, I read a report stating these meds should never be given to a woman over age 50."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I truly don’t know where to start. I went in for a UTI. The urgent care PA gave me Macrobid. The first 2 1/2 days were great. On the 3rd day, around lunch, I felt like I had been hit by a truck. I was tired and my whole body ached. I took some Ibuprofen and thought I was doing better. That morning around 3:00 am I woke up with a 101.4 fever and chills. I had chills and fever for 36 hours after stopping the medication. I then began having MAJOR muscle aches and pain like I have never experienced before. I have been off for 8 days now and am still struggling with the awful muscle and joint pain in my legs and arms. It is the worst sensation I have experienced!! I am praying things get better soon!!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Scary experience. I started to get very ill a few hours after starting the medication, nausea, headache, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Two days later, a GP told me I may have the flu. I went home, went to bed. So weak, low fever, chills, could not get warm, still vomiting, horrendous headache. A few days feeling the same, I noticed a rash on my body. Went to the emergency department by ambulance. The antibiotic had caused acute liver failure. I had been on day five of a seven-day course. Lucky enough, the doctor in the hospital put the connection together, and the medication was stopped. It took a few months to recover from the fatigue, especially, but I'm lucky to be alive also. Another few days at home alone, I would probably have passed out. I was delirious most days, so they were blurry and confusing. No more Macrodantin for me. Even have an emergency bracelet if I need to travel outside Ireland."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I started this medicine for my UTI. I always ate a meal with this pill. I really did not experience any sickness. I was on it for 7 days. I have trouble with anxiety, but it was not too bad. However, it seemed like this medicine made me more anxious at times. Then, on my last few days, I felt a little weird at times. Then, on my last day taking the medicine, I woke up with a scratchy throat. Then, by evening, I had a fever and bad chills. I didn't take the last pill because I felt so bad. My head kind of hurts too. I don't know if it's this medicine for sure or if I'm catching a virus."
