For Urinary Tract Infection "I was on this medication for 9 grueling days for a UTI. I didn’t take the last day because I thought if I did, it would be my last day living. I had severe-and I mean severe-side effects, including nausea, headaches, muscle and joint pain that were excruciating. I had pain in my spine so bad that I was afraid I had bone cancer. My joint pain would wake me up in the middle of the night. I had a few horrible nightmares and chills every night. It was seriously a feeling of doom. I had no idea a drug prescribed by a doctor could have such horrible side effects. It was so bad that I didn’t even think it was the antibiotic. I ended up going back to my doctor on day 9. I was sent for scans on my stomach, gallbladder, and bowels. I had full blood work done. Guess what? NOTHING was wrong. It was all side effects from this nasty drug. PLEASE take it off the market. It was a very bad experience."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I got prescribed Macrodantin before I read these reviews. I’ve been on it now for only 2 days, and I’m dying sick. However, it cleared up my bladder infection almost immediately! I have awful flu symptoms, exhausted, and no appetite at all. I’m cold all the time and just feel terrible overall. I’ve decided to come off the antibiotic because I can’t continue feeling this way. Seriously consider what this drug does to your body before taking it!"

For Prevention of Bladder infection "I was given this drug to take to prevent recurring UTIs. “100 mg 1x per day with food at bedtime.” All I can say is “avoid at ALL COST!” I have ended up with horrifying bowel movements (frequency and color), backache, no energy, no appetite (great when you're supposed to take this with food), fever, chills, severe anxiety, but the worst was lung congestion, a horrifying cough, and difficulty breathing that was SO BAD I was sent for a Covid test, and they said they were certain I had it (I didn’t). Stopped taking the drug, and within 24 hours there were no more fevers, cough lessened, no congestion. Took a couple of days for the bowel movement issues, difficulty breathing, backache, etc. to subside. I think this drug should be taken off the market. I started taking the supplement D-mannose daily and have had much more luck. I will never EVER take this again."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Symptoms: severe abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, achy pain in back, fatigue, chills, sweating, headache, cough. I just finished my last dose of Macrobid, and I believe it cleared up my UTI, but these side effects are not worth it. The abdominal pain I have been having is so bad that it has woken me up from my sleep three nights in a row. I have the chills, and because of the abdominal pain, it is hard to eat. I also have terrible headaches that worsen with certain movements or lights. This pill is awful, and I wish I would've known about these symptoms before starting."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I wish I would have read these reviews before I started taking this medication! I feel so sick! I started to wonder if I have something really serious like cancer. I am so weak. One minute I am drenched in sweat, and then I have chills so bad no amount of blankets will warm me. I can't get out of bed, and I must go to work tomorrow. I am a teacher, and I have parent/teacher conferences! I constantly have a fever of 101 or higher! Why would they prescribe this medication to anyone? Too many people have the same terrible side effects!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "This was the first and last time. I took the first dose, and 3 hours later, I was in full despair, vomiting nonstop every hour. Gut-wrenching vomiting, mind you. Full body sweats, chills, couldn’t stand. I had to have my mom come stay the night with me because it made me that sick. For Bladder Infection "I got a prescription of nitrofurantoin in November 2019 for a simple UTI. Had no other symptom other than burning pee and soreness in the right kidney. One hour after I took the first pill, I became so ill that I could not move. I ended up in bed with a severe headache, shivering with a high fever, and my feet felt like they were burning up. My daughter wanted to take me to the emergency, but I was too sick to move. Also, I could hardly breathe. It was getting worse with each dose. Total loss of appetite... I lost 7 lbs. When I stopped taking the drug after four days, I improved slightly and was able to get to the hospital. There, the doctor explained that I had a very rare reaction to a common drug and that I was lucky that I discontinued taking it when I did. He said that it had not permanently damaged my lungs. I expected to gradually get better, but my feet are still burning and now they are also numb and tingling. Still hard to breathe. I am actually a mess ever since this ordeal."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Started Macrobid, no reaction first day. Second day, felt congested in my chest, which was weird. By that night, I had cold fingers and toes and very sore joints: toes, fingers, ankles, and worst of all, the knees. Feel really awful, have stopped the antibiotic, never again. Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "After taking 2 pills, I suddenly experienced chills and a fever of 101, and a severe throbbing headache. I called the doctor, spoke to the nurse, she advised continuing taking it. My gut told me not to. Later in the evening, I developed tingly fingers. I called my doctor, and he said to stop taking it, I may be having a serum reaction. It's been over 24 hours since I have taken Macrobid, and I still have a terrible throbbing headache, upper back ache, and a low-grade fever. This medication is poison!!! I can't believe it hasn't been banned! Will pass the word to everyone never to take this horrible drug!"

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I cannot overstate how much I despise this medication. It may be effective in getting rid of bladder infections, but I never got that far. I used this medication twice (I gave it a second go, thinking my previous experience might've been an anomaly). Wrong. Within 2 days, each time, I had severe flu-like symptoms. They included: chills, mild fever, muscle aches all over, sharp pains in my stomach, severe nausea, vomiting, pounding headache, and extreme fatigue. I was told to take with a meal and drink lots of water. I felt like I was drinking 2 gallons a day...until I couldn't drink or eat anything without throwing it up. I stopped taking it the second time, after 3 pills, and it took 2 full days (and lots of Tylenol) for my symptoms to subside."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I am only taking the time to write this review because I see so many negative ones. I'd hate to see someone not take it and risk an infection getting worse! This drug does work, cleared up my UTI in 2 days. There are some not pleasant side effects-nausea, I've been feeling this one all week, body ache and chills, only on the first day. In my unique case, I'd take any pain in the world over having a strong urge to use the restroom every 30 seconds and intense burning. I've taken this drug once before and felt fine. Talk to the doctor if you're concerned, there are other medications out there!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I am 66 yr. old and get a lot of UTIs after going on the bike, in the pool, and apparatus at the gym that causes friction in that area. I usually get ciprofloxacin, which doesn't affect me much. But, Macrobid causes stomach troubles, nausea, chest and lung problems, chills, fevers, dizziness, palpitations, headaches, and more. I didn't have time to say 'no' to the walk-in doc who gave me this again, but I will never, ever use it again. I know it's going to take another week to get 'semi-normal' again, but this med takes me down every time."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Going through the reviews. Sounds like most of them are just on the wrong antibiotic. Nausea, fever, chills, etc., are also signs of a bad kidney infection. Not saying they are all like that, but some of them could be."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Macrobid for a 3-day course, 2 doses a day. The first day I seemed to be getting better, but then I woke up at 4:15 am the morning of the second day with chest pains. Throughout the day, I suffered from headaches, chest pains, muscle and joint aches, nausea, dizziness, fever, and chills. Now on the third day, and though I'm not feeling as ill anymore, I'm still dealing with chest, back, and stomach pains. Can't even tell if treating the UTI because I've been in so much pain. Worst experience I've ever had with antibiotics - would definitely never use Macrobid again!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Got a UTI. Uncomfortable but not nearly as bad as I felt after taking this drug. I agree 100% with others who have posted their negative experience. I am suffering from extreme stomach pain, chills, night sweats, headaches, and general pain all over, this is after taking nitrofurantoin for 2 out of a 7-day prescription. Not sure I can keep taking it because I am feeling so horrible. I rarely, if ever, have a bad reaction to antibiotics."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Day 1 no symptoms. Day 2 I felt better, then had 5 bowel movements. Day 3 tingling/needle feeling in both feet and the chills. Day 4 no symptoms. Day 5 no symptoms. Day 6 bad headache, chills, fever of 103.4. Ears ringing. Took aspirin, fever broke to 102.2. 3 hours later fever was up to 103.2. Resting heartbeat rate 137-139. (My normal resting heartbeat is 58-64.) Shortness of breath. Day 7 I stopped taking the drug. Shortness of breath. Fever 102.5, resting heartbeat rate 110. Ears ringing. Day 8 fever 100-101.4. Shortness of breath increased. Left eye hurt, sharp pain. Ears ringing. Resting heartbeat rate 99. Day 9 fever dropped down to 96.1! An hour later, temp was 97.0. Checked every 2 hours, temp fluctuated between 96.7 - 97.5. Lungs hurt more. Dizzy. Day 10 temp 97.5. Shortness of breath. Strange intermittent hiccup type of breathing. Headache, right temple sharp pains, pain travels down behind my right ear to the base of the skull. Left eye okay today."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I took Macrobid for two and a half days and felt sick. Plus, I'm scared of anything that poses a risk of side effects that are a mile and a half long. Macrobid made me so sick that I ended up at the ER with swollen lymph nodes, a stiff neck, nausea, a migraine that caused eye pain, vomiting, and chills. I felt poisoned. My sister wanted to stay with us because she was so worried about me. I was sick for three days in bed. Never, ever again. I'm only seeing naturopathic doctors and a Chinese medicine doctor unless it is life or death."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Have had UTI 3 times now and treated with Macrobid. Third time I only had a pain in my right side and within taking the first pill my heart rate shot up and got excruciating headaches, and I had shivering and a high temp, basically flu-like symptoms. Though I was dying, I was bedbound and thought I had sepsis as most of the symptoms matched. I was crying in bed as I felt so bad. On the second day, the temperature came down and shivering was gone, but headaches were still there, and I mean they were so bad radiating pain into my jaw. I had no appetite either but forced myself to have something as it states in the pack you should for absolution. Saw doc today and she took me off them, will wait for results to see if I need something else. Glad I looked on here, thought I was going mad. I’m sure that Macrobid is fine for some people and I was the first two times, but not now. UK review"

For Bladder Infection "I started taking nitrofurantoin today for a bladder infection, first and only pill at about 1 pm. Felt fine till about 6 pm and started feeling extremely tired to the point I could hardly stay awake. Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I was prescribed this medicine for a bladder infection and would never recommend anyone to take it. Obviously, it depends on your body type, but I usually have a high tolerance. I'm needing to head to the doctor's now because I've been experiencing painful headaches every day, sharp stomach aches, muscle pain, chills (hot to brutally cold: fever-type symptoms), tingling, light-headed, nauseous, eye aches, my urine went from neon green to dark brown, and as gross as it is, I haven't been able to take a proper poo, but every time I pass gas on the toilet, watery diarrhea-like stuff comes out, and I've seen some blood when I wiped. This medicine definitely didn't go well with me and is a painful experience!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Very effective antibiotic-cleared symptoms within 24 hours. Side effects are terrible. You will feel like you have the stomach flu or food poisoning-fever, chills, and extreme nausea. I would recommend taking it with a big meal. I feel marginal (not wonderful) eating a big lunch and taking it, but eating a relatively small dinner and taking the pill 3 hours later, I spent the night thinking I had another illness besides the infection. Probably will ask for a different antibiotic if this happens again. Aside from slight nausea, I never react to medications, and this is all new to me."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Took this drug for 3 days. The infection got better after 2 doses. However, I slowly developed headaches and a little chills on the 2nd day of treatment. Thought I might be getting a bit of flu, so I ignored the symptoms and continued my medication. As soon as I took the last dose, my symptoms got worse. I was so weak I could hardly walk. My eyes got blurry and generally nauseous and drowsy. As I type this, I still have all these symptoms with a raised heartbeat, occasional numbness of my hands and feet. All I want is to sleep but too scared to sleep just in case it got worse. Nonetheless, the medicine does the job as it cleared my infection after two days of taking it, but it gave me a bad experience, so I'm not taking this drug again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I have never written a review for any medication in my life. But, oh my goodness! This was a horror. As soon as I took my second Macrobid pill, I became so ill that I had to call an ambulance. I had an extremely high temperature, chills, and pain in my legs and chest. I had all the side effects, and some aren't even mentioned on their leaflet. Can someone please tell me how long it will take for symptoms to go away, as it's the next morning and I'm feeling so unwell still? Thanks."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I’m 56 years old and have never had a problem with antibiotics. Prescribed Macrobid 2x a day for 10 days as I had my third UTI in five months. UTI symptoms quickly vanished, BUT by day 5 I couldn’t think, had zero appetite, headaches, and a sore throat - assumed virus. Day 8, my face and neck began to swell, sudden SEVERE back pain, fever, teeth chattering, vomiting - saw the doctor, test showed kidney function off/dehydration, though I constantly had fluids. 3 days off - still sore throat, tired, but my head is clear and energy/appetite returning. Another kidney function test next week. PS this is NOT only for people with allergic reactions - never again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I started this medicine for my UTI. I always ate a meal with this pill. I really did not experience any sickness. I was on it for 7 days. I have trouble with anxiety, but it was not too bad. However, it seemed like this medicine made me more anxious at times. Then, on my last few days, I felt a little weird at times. Then, on my last day taking the medicine, I woke up with a scratchy throat. Then, by evening, I had a fever and bad chills. I didn't take the last pill because I felt so bad. My head kind of hurts too. I don't know if it's this medicine for sure or if I'm catching a virus."
