Metronidazole "I had side effects from these drugs, but found when I did not take them at the same time, it wasn't as bad. In states where it's legal, THC helps with the diverticulitis as well as the side effects of Flagyl and Cipro."

"I am a 49 yr old male. This is the 2nd time I've had diverticulitis (at 40 the first time). I have taken both meds (Cipro and Metron 500 ml), this is the only thing that helped me. I see that everyone is different. My pain (lower left ab) was unreal. I have been out of work for 3 days (haven't missed a day in 10 yrs). I'm not 100% yet, but the sharp pains are almost gone. I need more fiber and have been told you can heal this."

"I have had a few bouts with diverticulitis close together and was prescribed Cipro and Flagyl, both strong antibiotics. When trying to take both at the same time, I felt very sick and nauseous. I went online to read more about each of these meds. Someone with experience suggested taking them an hour apart, and when taking Flagyl, take it in a spoon of applesauce because it leaves a bitter taste if it touches any part of the inside of your mouth. Put it in the back of the mouth with applesauce and swallow with lots of water. Also, do not take your Cipro with milk or yogurt, it tells you on your med info on the bottle and paper info. The last time, the prescription for Flagyl was doubled from 250 mg to 500 mg, and it made me throw it up."

"I am taking metronidazole 500 mg three times daily for 10 days along with Augmentin (cannot take Cipro) for diverticulitis. This is my fourth round of these meds this year for recurrent diverticulitis. It always alleviates the nasty problem but returns several weeks later despite taking each dose of the regimen religiously. I will have a colonoscopy soon and will likely require a colon resection. The drugs produce very uncomfortable side effects including nausea, diarrhea, metallic taste, fog, headache, and fatigue. I have a suggestion that has helped tremendously in reducing side effects. Purchase Floragen in the refrigerator section at your pharmacy and take one an hour before your first antibiotic dose each day. It lines your gut with “good” bacteria and seems to help 80-90% with nausea. I’m still “off” but very manageable. I will finish metronidazole in 3 days and pray that I never have to take another dose."

"The taste of this drug is so terrible that I would gag, and the pill would get caught in my throat. Then I would gag some more and throw it all up. I finally asked my doctor if it would hurt if I coated it with something, and he said it shouldn't. So tonight, I melted a couple pieces of Hershey's milk chocolate in a little saucer and rolled each pill in it to coat. One or two minutes in the freezer on a plate, and bam! Not a problem tossing it back and swallowing these suckers now."

"My mom took metronidazole for diverticulitis. She is 82 years old. After day 4.5, we told her to stop. She was so nauseated and weak. The doctor told her to finish the medicine. So after 36 hours off, she finished seven days. That was 6 days ago. She has been to the ER two times for severe nausea and weakness since being off the medicine. She is having trouble eating because of nausea. She has been taking Zofran and it helps a little but causes constipation and dryness. Does anyone know how long this will last? It has been two weeks since the first CAT scan and diagnosis and the start of meds."

"I have had diverticulitis attacks 2 times/year for several years and have been successful treating it with Keflex or Cipro. For whatever reason, my gastro MD added metronidazole in combo with Keflex this time. After 4 days, I'm stopping the metronidazole because of side effects. Metronidazole did not ease the diverticulitis pain faster (still took 3 days for pain to subside), and it has made me tired, lethargic to the point of not even getting dressed. Pressure in my head and severe cramps. I'm a high-energy, upbeat person, and this droopy soul doesn't suit me. I'll stick to the Cipro, change up my probiotic, and avoid Flagyl in the future."

"Been on Cipro 2x & Flagyl 3x for 7 days after diverticulitis attack. Feeling hungry but don't want to eat. Feeling lightheaded, a little nauseous at times, no energy, no ambition. Flagyl taste is disgusting. No way I was going to be able to take that 3x a day for 14 days, so I cover it with peanut butter and then swallow (just like the dogs)!! Pain was pretty much gone after a couple of days, but the hardest part is the bland diet and no or very little calcium. Think some extra spicy hummus brought this on. May have to give up the hot peppers."

"This metronidazole is horrific! It's my third time within 6 years having to take this medication. Diagnosed back in 2013 with diverticulitis, only mine is on my right side and not my left. I only have to take it for 7 days this time because I called it really early. I'm on my third day, my diverticulitis pain is gone, but I'm having different pain across the top of my stomach. Went to the ER yesterday because of bloody stools because of the medication. No nausea or vomiting, just a horrible metallic taste in my mouth, which is unbearable. Will continue the course of the medication until finished. Diverticulitis is not a joke, I wish there was another way to treat it, but I'm allergic to penicillin. The first 2 days, I did the liquid diet, but while at the ER, I asked if I could resume my regular diet and did. Don't know which is worse: the medication or the illness."

"39-year-old mom of 4. On my 2nd bout of diverticulitis (1st one 7 years earlier), I was given 10 days of Flagyl & Cipro. I took them together twice a day, and then the 3rd Flagyl by itself at night. I noticed a minimal yucky taste when taking them, but by the time I had finished my water, it was usually gone. I had a metallic taste approximately 3 times total that lasted just minutes. By the last part of day 2, I was feeling better, day 3 there was no more pain. By day 4, there was some discoloration of urine - rusty colored to orange. I never ever felt anxious, nauseous, had diarrhea, or felt tired. Overall, great experience with the combo of meds!"

Metronidazole "I was told not to drink alcohol with Flagyl, of course, but I also found I cannot use Purell (ethanol-based) or isopropyl rubbing alcohol with it. These led to terrible stomach pain and headache. One pharmacist told me this couldn't happen, not enough alcohol would get in, but another said yes, it happens, and some people even have a reaction to alcohol in the slight fumes you get while pumping gasoline that includes alcohol. When I avoid Purell and isopropyl, I don't get those severe stomach pains."

Metronidazole "I was prescribed this medicine for my diverticulitis, and every time I took this pill, I was experiencing bad cramping. So, I went to the emergency room, and the doctor there told me to stop that medication because it causes constipation. So, I'm just taking the other medicine, and thus far no cramping, just a bit of a headache, but that's better than getting abdominal pains."

Metronidazole "I have lupus and diverticulitis/IBS, along with other health issues, and then my cat bit my arm on top of a diverticulitis flare-up, so my doctors treated both with Flagyl and Cipro. I would comment more, but this site will not let me. Please be careful with these medications."

"Metronidazole is horrible. Was diagnosed with diverticulosis. The first day was bad, but every day I get worse. While the pain in my lower left abdomen has subsided, the medication has made me so sick I cannot even function. This is day 6 out of 10. I will call the doc tomorrow and tell them I need something else. Each day it gets worse. Feet and hands are ice cold, feel like I am going to throw up all day and night, dizzy, chills, bloated, fever, lethargic, and out of sorts. Absolutely horrible."

"This medication makes me and my muscles hurt like I've been hit by a truck. And that's after day two! I take three a day for intestinal infection (diverticulitis). Besides the bad tastes and maybe some stomach pains, this is my main concern. Makes almost all my muscles in my body ache badly, especially my feet and arms."

"Was hospitalized with diverticulitis. Pain was acute. It made a grown man cry. After four days of IV-injected Levaquin and another broad-spectrum antibiotic, the white blood cell count was not going down. I constantly had blood drawn at 4 AM and results from the lab by 12 noon. The broad-spectrum antibiotics controlled the white blood cell count from rising, but did nothing to decrease it. Even though I was on an all-liquid diet and on morphine for pain, nothing was controlling the severity of the symptoms. It could have led to sepsis. An infectious diseases specialist was called for a consult, and he added this antibiotic into the mix. In one day, this got the white blood cell count down and kept it going down after repeated blood draws."

"This medicine stops the diverticulitis infection quickly. The side effects are very minor compared to the pain of diverticulitis. I never know when I might have a flare-up, and since I travel, I need to carry this medicine with me just in case."

"Wow... is all I can say. I was in a terrible state one week ago today. Woke up at 5 am to pain in the lower abdomen and was in the bathroom the best part of 3 hours straight. By 7:30 am, losing just blood, three hours of this, and hospital it was. I was hooked to IV fluids and meds... numerous tests run to nothing showing up seriously!!! I was sent home after 6 hours... with Cipro one two times daily and Flagyl one three times a day. It was on top of reg meds for BP and R. Oh boy, nothing in stomach, feeling ill, popping all these pills took a few days to eat anything. My gut is in an awful state, woke up many nights feeling ill, mornings are the worst, I feel like throwing up. Then last night I woke to vomit in my mouth... sorry... but these meds are brutal. I'm done... and stomach still a mess."

Metronidazole "This is the 4th time I have had diverticulitis, and one of the things I dread is having to take 500 mg of Cipro (2x a day) and 500 mg of Flagyl (3x a day) for 10 days. The nausea and stomach ache are horrible. I am now on the 7th day, and this morning I began thinking about why the problems remain so many hours after I take the drugs. I thought perhaps the drugs were not dissolving properly, so I cut the pills in half and took them in 2 pieces. I have not had nausea or stomach pain today. It did not help the fatigue and weakness, however."

"If I could give a neg 100, I would. I hate this drug. Horrible side effects, I'm still dizzy and have brain fog after 3 months. I had a severe headache, vomiting, severe anxiety, horrible brain fog, fatigue, no appetite. I still have anxiety! Cipro or any fluoroquinolone is usually prescribed with this. I have to say shame on all the doctors who give any fluoroquinolone out since Bayer themselves and the FDA sent out warning letters. The FDA safety review found that both oral and injectable fluoroquinolones are associated with disabling side effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and the central nervous system. These side effects can occur hours to weeks after exposure to fluoroquinolones and may potentially be permanent."

"Given Cipro and Flagyl for diverticulitis. To complicate things, I take thyroid meds first thing in the morning and blood pressure meds and supplements at night. Trying to create a way to fit everything in is hard. I take both Cipro and Flagyl together in the morning but then eat breakfast with no dairy, which is hard for me. The best thing is eggs! Drink Kefir mid-morning and then Flagyl at lunch with no dairy.... Take the last Flagyl and Cipro at 8 or so, but have to wait two hours for evening meds. Pain is gone, but I feel tired, nauseous, and have a metallic taste in my mouth! Glad I am retired, as I could not do this while working."

"I hate this drug. Hate it, hate it, hate it. I have to take it 4 times a day for 14 days. My doctor is sadistic. I'm so nauseous I can barely breathe. Even on anti-nausea meds! I have no energy. I can't sleep. My head hurts. This feels 10x worse than the flu. But it works. It will help heal the diverticulitis. It always does. And every time it sucks."

"I just turned 47. I was on Cipro and Metro in October, and it was hell! Tough on the full systems, and I thought about stopping them many times. The infection still seems to be lingering, and I am just finishing day 3 of 10 again, and it has been very, very rough! It is like poison on the system and super rough! I actually told my wife I should not take them because I did feel good, and the first experience (trauma) is fresh in my mind. I have had high blood pressure, 170/105, and am on medication to help, but this nasty stuff does not help on top of this! I do feel better reading some other reviews. Yes, anxiety increased, headaches like nothing ever experienced, and a long time to recover. Best of luck to all suffering through this. Remember, 10 days is better than surgery and a colostomy bag. God bless you all, prayers are with you!"
