"Had pain in my lower left quadrant. Thought maybe had a partial blockage. On the third day, went to the ER, got blood work done, got an X-ray, found nothing, blood work came back with elevated white blood cell count. Doc orders a CT scan, turns out I have acute diverticulitis (I'm 30). The drugs (Cipro and Flagyl) work, pain subsided, and I can imagine they're fighting the infection as I write this, but man, the side effects are pretty terrible. Nausea, dizziness, upset stomach, metallic taste in mouth, and feeling crappy overall from the side effects. I'm on day 3, like most reviews on here, it seems like the make-or-break moment. The pills are progressively harder to ingest because I dread the side effects. BUT I gotta let the meds run their course."

"Diagnosed in ER with acute moderate diverticulitis 9 days ago. Prescribed 14 days of both Metronidazole and Flagyl, with a double dose of Metronidazole 3x daily. The side effects are making me sicker! I’ve lost 10 pounds, and the pain that had mostly gone by day 3 is back, along with vomiting. I can’t eat anything at all, I have severe diarrhea and insomnia. Heading to ER again later to see my gastro specialist. Medical reports and studies I’ve been reading say that these medications should NOT be prescribed for diverticulitis unless a bacterial infection has been confirmed. I’m not taking any more unless my doctor can convince me that the agony is worth it and that I’m not going to be worse off afterward."

Metronidazole "I went to my doctor for lower abdominal pain and was told I had diverticulitis. I was prescribed Flagyl and Cipro. It started out with nausea, so I called my doctor because I had terrible nausea, and I was prescribed Zofran. I still have two and a half days left, and it's absolute torture! I have never had side effects like this: debilitating nausea, headaches, chills and sweats, lethargy, metallic taste, diarrhea, and I am having trouble sleeping because of the nausea and my upset stomach. I kind of feel like I have the flu without a fever. I am up right now at 4 a.m., sipping ginger ale, trying to get through the night. The pain in my abdomen has subsided. This medication is very harsh on the body."

Metronidazole "I'm all too familiar with the Flagyl/Cipro combination. I've dealt with diverticulitis many times over the years. I have tried several ways to get through the unpleasant task of ingesting these medications. I found that alternating one pill every 6 hours instead of taking two pills every 12 hours really helped. Also, taking milk with the Flagyl and making sure you eat 2 hours before and after taking Cipro really makes a difference. Keep hydrated also. I do get the metallic taste and find that drinking water just makes it worse. I'm a huge water lover, but not when taking these meds. I drink water that is cut with juice. I hope this helps."

"Taking Flagyl with Cipro for diverticulitis, feel weak and tired, a bit dizzy and loss of appetite, but the pain is pretty much gone. Taking these monster pills with applesauce, and it really helps! Also taking a good probiotic. Day 4 of 7."

Metronidazole "While I'm confident Flagyl is working, I have suffered some severe side effects, one of which is unlisted. I believe it is working because my abdominal pain has significantly decreased since being diagnosed with diverticulitis about 1 week ago. I am also taking Cipro. The reported side effect of having a metallic taste is very understated! Not only do I have an AWFUL paint/chemical taste constantly in my mouth, but my sense of smell is on overdrive! This has contributed significantly to my loss of appetite, nausea, and in many cases my inability to function. I threw away my sheets because I couldn't sleep; I carry around room deodorizer with me because whenever I walk into a room I gag due to the smells - that are only overwhelming to me."

Metronidazole "I have been taking this for almost a week for a diverticulitis flare up and if this ever happens again I will ask if there is something else I can take. I agree, I think this has made me sicker than I originally was. General listlessness, very dizzy, weird hunger pangs, and foods don't taste good or the same as they did. Headaches! Looking forward to the last dose. A nurse friend suggested eating Activia yogurt while taking this to help with stomach problems."

Metronidazole "Was put on Flagyl and Cipro for 1 week. I'm light-headed and only want to sleep! Nauseous, and my mouth tastes awful. I am glad to read all of these posts, and I thought I was getting a secondary sinus infection. My last pills were on a Monday, and today, Wednesday, I still feel 'in the clouds.'"

"I have had diverticulitis for several years now and had my first partial bowel resection after I was extremely ill and diagnosed with a perforation. Since then, I have kept a combo of aerobic and anaerobic antibacterial meds on standby. I agree with a few other people... Cipro is extremely bad for you. Flagyl isn’t great either, but my Cipro experience was the absolute worst. I have never had side effects from any medications ever... until this one. My doctor changed my regimen and I am now on a Keflex + Flagyl combo. It works, but I still get a prolonged upset stomach for a number of days after finishing the 10-day cycle. I find taking chewable Gravol and eating yogurt, eggs, and drinking plenty of fluids does help. Diverticulitis completely sucks. And I’m sorry all of you who have posted are enduring this disease. Do what you can to avoid the resection. It is absolutely horrible."

Metronidazole "Flagyl cured my diverticulitis, however, my blood pressure went to 200 over 119. I had to be rushed to the emergency room. Afterwards, I checked and saw that this can happen if you are in your 60s or older. Don't exactly know why older people can get this symptom, but I will never use it again. The drug worked, that is why I rated it high, but the side effects are brutal."

Metronidazole "I am on the 5th day! The last day of metronidazole 500 mg twice a day! I don't recommend this antibiotic to anyone. I have had the most vivid, worst nightmares on this drug. My stomach cramps, and hurts, and I have diarrhea bad. I feel like my eyes are so dry and have a brain fog, and don't know if I'm coming or going. Side note, it cleared my diverticulitis up, though."

Metronidazole "Flagyl leaves a bad taste in my mouth after a couple of days, makes my urine smell bad, and causes nausea (so get some anti-nausea meds along with it). That being said, it does the job very well. Noticeable improvement within 1-3 days."

"I was given metronidazole and Flagyl after a diverticulitis flare-up that took me to the emergency room. It was fine the first couple of days I took them. After the fourth day or so, my real nightmare began: irritated, bitchy, depressed, moody. No appetite, bad taste in my mouth, even drinking water was a task. I also had severe chills, feeling exhausted, even walking to the restroom was a task. In other words, I felt like I was being poisoned by these horrible meds. After a vomiting episode and so much gas in my stomach, I called the 24-hour hotline to my doctor's office, she agreed to stop taking them. It was already almost 10 days with those nasty meds. It's been 2 days now since I stopped them, still feeling crappy, exhausted, and my tummy is still unsettled."

Metronidazole "Flagyl took away all of my energy for 23 hours each day for the first few days. I could not even watch TV. I had almost constant stomach pain, and additional stomach pain at bowel movements. I did a lot of sleeping every day. I also had a headache. I have been off Flagyl for 11 days now, and I still have some stomach pain."

Metronidazole "I ended up in the ER with diverticulitis and was given Cipro and Flagyl. Yes, the taste is bitter, and things don't taste so good. However, despite the taste, I have gotten significantly better with the two medicines, and that is the main thing for me. As with any medicines, some of us will experience different side effects, if any, but if this is one of them, this is very minor. I did not experience the nausea or a lot of other ones I read about with these medicines."

Metronidazole "Used both Flagyl and Cipro. Also, I found that after 7 days, the color of my urine did not look right, freaked out and did some calling around to pharmacists, only to find out said yes, this is a side effect, although not real common. Of course, I would be the odd ball."

"I'm a 34-year-old male in relatively good shape, active, and always on my feet. I've had diverticulitis off and on for four years. When it flares up, the pain is terrible, coupled with a 50-hour-a-week job and two young children, it makes life a living hell. When I get a flare-up (still can't figure out why I get them, everything seems to cause my guts to go crazy), I was put on Flagyl and Cipro. The first few flare-ups, I stopped taking the medicine. I felt like absolute garbage-exhausted, nauseous, brain fog, and achy all over. I stopped taking them and let my body do its thing. This past bout was too much to handle, and I had to take the meds as directed. Day three, and I am feeling much better. The meds WORK! Endure, and get well."

"I was prescribed this metronidazole along with Cipro (for diverticulitis) and have to say it stopped my pain within a day. I suffered some stomach discomfort, but nothing severe, and had none of the bad side effects people have mentioned here."

"I take metronidazole 3 times a day for diverticulitis. I have been on this off and on for 5 months. I have lost 30 pounds and have no appetite. I just don't feel like I am living. The taste is terrible and dry heaves nonstop. I have to stay on this medication until we schedule surgery. I am not eating much, tired, and don’t want to do anything. The holiday is approaching, and it is my favorite holiday. I hope never to have to be on this again. I feel like I want to jump out of my skin and cry a lot. This is not how I want to live my life."

"I have taken this medication more than I have wanted to for diverticulitis (this and cipro combined kill the infection), as well have taken for BV. Does it suck? Yes. Can it make you feel like crap? Absolutely. But suck it up and take the medication. Either push through the side effects or don't get better. Eat a small snack before taking. Immediately drink water - a full glass. Take on schedule and your issues will go away."

Metronidazole "I have had three episodes of diverticulitis in the last five years. Because I had pretty rough experiences with the Flagyl/Cipro combination in my previous episodes, I asked the pharmacist to advise me, with my prior history in mind. I really wanted this time to be different. He said the most important advice is DO NOT USE ALCOHOL, which sounds like common sense; but that includes mouthwash. (you might swallow a bit) It's a slow recovery; absolutely. I live in So Cal and this was during a heat wave, but I slept day and night the first few days with a heating pad on my lower abdomen. The pharmacy confirmed Tylenol is okay for pain, also. It's not a walk in the park, but I did better this time, even with other minor side effects."

"5th day of the combo, 1st time being diagnosed with diverticulitis. 42 yr old female, with a family I love. Can't wait to be off these meds. Not sure how I feel about them. I know they're helping, but can't stand side effects!!! I can be anxious on my own. I feel alright for the most part, but once I feel something new or different, I tend to freak myself out! But reading other people's experiences has helped calm me a lot. Thanks to everyone for sharing. Feels better to know others are going through the same thing. I wish everyone a quick recovery!!!"

Metronidazole "In 2009, I was diagnosed with diverticulitis, had lots of blood loss. Six years to the month, I had a sudden flare-up, high temp, cramps. Instead of going to the doctor right away, I took amoxicillin that I had. Started feeling better and went out to eat, and bam, cramping started. Went to see my doctor, he put me on Cipro and Flagyl. Been on it for 4 days now, the pain is gone, still have bloating. The meds made my urine dark, and my head feels stuffed up. Burning in my eyes. Don't do what I did, go to your doctor. I'm making an appointment to see a specialist."

Metronidazole "First off, don't forget that a lot of people are probably doing excellent with little to no problems with this antibiotic. Sort of like you never really hear from happy customers, usually the unsatisfied ones. Also, that everyone's body reacts differently. ...that being said, Holy Cow, the nausea! Ugh... Stomach cramps and pretty much constant nausea all day today (day 2). Eventually, had to leave work early. Pepto did not help. Going to try taking Nauzene with me to work tomorrow, see if it helps. (OTC nausea medication - a lifesaver in the past) Taking it with Cipro. Been on this combo before for my diverticulitis without so many stomach problems. Still a better option than the huge waves of pain from a flare-up."

Metronidazole "The taste it leaves in your mouth is horrible, but I have been on it along with Cipro since Saturday and as of this morning could tell a big difference in how I feel. The soreness in my lower stomach is almost gone and until today it has been unbearable. It leaves a metallic taste in your mouth, takes away your appetite and made me feel nauseous but I would take it again if I had another flare up with the Diverticulitis it seems to help."
