For High Blood Pressure "I had my blood pressure go up to 180/120. It crept up on me, and I have always had tachycardia. So far, it has brought my pressure down some and my heart rate a little. But it makes me very fatigued, and I feel like my breath is taken away from me sometimes. A plus is I have ataxia, and it does not make that worse. But whoa, the dreams are something else."

For Atrial Fibrillation "This medication lowered my heart rate to 40 to 50 bpm, which feels too low. I am frequently fatigued, feeling very weak, and trying mild exercise to build strength makes my muscles hurt (because a low heart rate doesn’t get enough blood to my muscles?). I am bloated, and my clothes are getting too tight. I have been on metoprolol tartrate, then succinate, at a low dose - 12.5 mg once daily - for 3 months. I am 70 years old, and even at this low dose, I am very uncomfortable with the side effects. My a-fib was very mild and did not warrant taking blood thinners, and it didn’t seem to be any worse now until a pre-surgery test indicated (…maybe) I may have cardiomyopathy. I am seeing my doctor in a few days. I have to stop this medication because these side effects are making me very depressed."

For Atrial Fibrillation "I have been taking 190 mg Betaloc for a few years, and the main problem is the fatigue that I get. I have permanent A-Fib from a failed Maze treatment while having my aortic valve replaced 9 years ago. I asked my GP if I could lower the dose to 142.5 mg daily. I have been doing this now for about 3 weeks, but now I am having strong bouts of A-Fib, so I have decided to go back to 190 mg again. What are your thoughts on this matter?"

For Heart Attack "This is detective work. Many of the meds say they may cause dizziness. I'm now convinced it's the metoprolol causing fatigue, fuzzy vision, increased urination, and dreams (I never dreamt very much before). I was prescribed this after a mild heart attack, after which I had 2 stents in my distal RCA. I noticed my heart rate remained high (95 and greater) until I was diagnosed with lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma and began chemo. The lymphoma was causing pleural effusion (fluid accumulation around the lung), causing excess pressure on internal organs. Once the chemo kicked in, my heart rate went down to normal (70-80), but I still took the metoprolol because none of the doctors said to discontinue. I plan to advise my cardio doctor that I would like to discontinue this drug."

Metoprolol for High Blood Pressure "I'm on 400 mg a day. I have vision problems. There's a black half-moon shape in one eye, sometimes bright colors. I have nausea and fatigue every day, and depression. I can't stop, as it's for a previous aortic aneurysm. Just feel miserable and like I've got the flu every day."

For Migraine Prevention "Was prescribed 2.5 mg twice a day. I had been getting 2 to 3 migraines weekly with aura. The migraines stopped or were so minimal, I felt no pain, only a brief time of aura. After saying that, however, fatigue is awful and my heart rate decreased to the point of affecting my metabolism, resulting in weight gain. No change in diet, but I also couldn’t exercise as I previously had. I have put on over 7 lbs. of weight, landing primarily in my stomach. I am going to ask my doctor to decrease to once a day and make it extended release to see if I can get the side effects more manageable. I’ve been on the medication for three months and had hoped the bad was over."

Metoprolol for Supraventricular Tachycardia "The side effects outweighed any benefits. Extreme fatigue, weight gain, muscle and joint soreness."

For Atrial Fibrillation "I've had zero issues taking 25 mg once daily in the morning, and I haven't had an episode since I began. I've seen the posts about weight gain and loss of energy, but haven't experienced any of that."
