For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had the Mirena IUD inserted on Feb 4th. It took 5 mins to insert, and they used an ultrasound machine to ensure it was done correctly. I have an extremely high pain tolerance, but must say the insertion was probably the worst 5 mins of my entire life. The pain was ridiculous! After that, I had mild cramping for 24 hrs and light brown bleeding for 3 days. On the 4th day out of nowhere, I felt sick to my stomach and had horrible cramping pains. Lasted for 30 minutes. I was almost in tears, but it subsided with 800 mg of Advil and a hot water bottle. My period was supposed to start on Feb 14th, but I had brown spotting 3 days prior and am still menstruating! It's been 11 days straight; it's light but enough to need a panty liner or tampon. I'm exhausted, cranky, and frustrated. My next doctor appointment is on Mar 7th to check that the IUD is still in the same position. I'm thinking if I bleed all of March, I'm getting this thing taken out. I had no idea I'd bleed for this many days in a row."

For Birth Control "The Mirena seemed like a great option for me as I had negative experiences with other forms of birth control. Insertion was fine but I had severe cramping for a few days after. My moods were up and down for the first few months, and I wanted to have it removed, but my doctor recommended trying it for 6 months. It has now been 6 months, and my mental health is the worst it has ever been. I'm constantly on the verge of tears and cannot cope with everyday life. I have a history of anxiety but I've never felt this low. I would not recommend the Mirena if you are sensitive to other birth controls (pill, implanon). I still have bad cramps on the Mirena, and my periods are heavier. Can't wait to have it removed!"

For Birth Control "I have had the Mirena in for nearly 2 years. It was okay for the first few months, odd cramp here and there. 6 months after insertion, I got my first (of many) bacterial infections. Cramps, pain during sex, brown smelly discharge. It always cleared up with flagyl and cream. I can’t even count how many I have had since then. It’s awful. I have 0 sex drive which makes my partner and me feel awful. Every time I get spotting, it always puts fear in me that it could be something more sinister, which escalates my anxiety. I have made an appointment to get it removed, as I can't live like this anymore."

For Birth Control "I was scared to get Mirena after reading all the horror stories, but got it anyways, and I'm liking it so far! I'm 20 years old with no kids. Cramping during insertion and off and on for a few days after, nothing unbearable. Skin has gotten better, and I've actually lost weight, but this might not have anything to do with Mirena. The only downside is I'm still spotting, but my doctor said it should be gone within a month or so. No pain during sex, and my boyfriend says he can't feel the strings either. Would definitely recommend! Don't let all the horror stories scare you."

For Birth Control "I love my Mirena. I had it inserted 4 weeks after my son was born. Unfortunately, I had to deliver him via C-section, and he was my first child, so my cervix never dilated, thus, the insertion of my Mirena was painful. For a couple of weeks after, I bled pretty heavily (but that could've been from his birth as well), and the bleeding stopped after about 4 weeks. I have not had a period (not even any spotting or cramping) yet, and I am SUPER happy with that. I had horrible periods before. No side effects, weight gain, acne, etc., thus far (12 weeks later). Despite the pain of insertion, I would do it 100 more times for the benefits. I would recommend Mirena to anyone."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had Mirena inserted in January 2019. It is now February 2020. The thin brown spotting is constant every day. I’ve ruined every pair of underwear I own. I’m not sure how much weight I’ve gained...maybe 10-15 pounds. I’m constantly bloated. My skin looks ok but not as good as before...not broken out...just different. The only benefit from this thing has been birth control. I tried to give it a chance but have come to the decision to get it yanked. I’m 40 and will be considering a tubal ligation. I can't win with hormonal birth control!"

For Birth Control "I have had the Mirena for about 2 years now and have had nothing but problems with it. My hair is falling out. I have gained weight. I don't want to have sex. I'm depressed. I now have anxiety attacks. I haven't had a period since getting it but I would rather have one than be moody all the time!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had the Mirena inserted 7 months ago. It was a little painful and discomfort for a couple of minutes, but if you have been through normal childbirth, you can handle that pain, you can handle anything. After the insertion of the Mirena, which my doctor recommended because I was suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding that would last up to 2 weeks, I spotted a little after insertion and was also cramping the next day. It was all gone about a week after insertion. Then the bleeding was full-on for about 1-2 weeks, then it would stop for a few days, then the bleeding started again. It was constant: 1 week of bleeding, then a stop for another few days. I was so frustrated, as was my hubby. Now everything has settled. We are all different, you have to be patient."

For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding "I was terrified to get the IUD after reading so many horror stories. I finally did it, and the pain was nothing I couldn't handle and only lasted a few seconds. I went from having awful heavy periods. I was on daily iron pills to barely getting a period, and never needing more than a panty liner. I have had zero side effects. People are quick to blame everything on their IUD. I'm so happy I did it!"

For Birth Control "I am a nurse practitioner working in women's health, so I thought I knew what to expect when I had my Mirena placed 3 months ago. I was WRONG! I have had bleeding every single day since insertion-occasionally just spotting, but most days I have light-to-moderate bleeding like the final couple of days of a period. I do not have cramps, and I have had an ultrasound to ensure proper device placement. I know that irregular bleeding is common in the first few months of use, but I did not expect the bleeding to be this persistent or this heavy. I am going to give it a few more months to see if the bleeding resolves; if it does not, I may have to get the Mirena removed."

For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding "My doctor inserted the Mirena after a D&C, so I was under anesthesia (no pain). I am 51 years old and I've had a horrible and very symptomatic perimenopause for 4 long years now. The worst being debilitating heavy bleeding that would cause me to lose a couple of days of work each month. The bad being an everyday feeling of uncomfortable bloating, unpredictable mood swings, insomnia, and hot flashes that came almost once an hour. I tried countless natural remedies from diet/exercise to so many products/supplements. NOTHING worked so I sought out another doctor. My new OB doc did some testing first, I'm healthy! My estrogen levels were on the higher end and my uterine walls were measuring thick, but she had a plan of action instead of me continuing to feel awful every day. The Mirena has been amazing for me! No periods, I can't feel it, and my anxiety/mood swings are replaced feeling much more calm and balanced. I feel great, no side effects, got my life back!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I chose Mirena because I was having heavy periods with severe cramping along with terrible acne and PMS symptoms. I am 27 years old and have never had children. I was very nervous before the procedure because of reading many terrible reviews. First off, placement was the most painful experience thus far. Not even exaggerating. I've got a very high pain tolerance, and I thought I was going to pass out. I left the office in some serious pain and cramping, and it continued for about a day. I spotted for about a week along with minor cramps. It's now been 2 months, and I have not had any spotting, cramping, or periods! My mood is better, and for the first time in 10 years, I haven't had any acne breakouts. Also, zero weight gain! I love Mirena, best choice ever."

For Birth Control "It's now been three months since I had the Mirena IUD inserted, and I'm glad I went for it. The insertion was not painful, although measuring the cervix was. However, the pain went away real quick. I had lots of cramping and spotting for the first six weeks, and since I'm very sensitive, it made me a bit moody too. However, as it settles in, I'm loving the convenience and the no-worry assurance of birth control, and I'm very glad I got the Mirena. Read a lot of negative reviews before I went for my appointment, but I felt like it was the right thing for me, and I'm glad I trusted my instincts. If you're thinking of getting one, just know that there is an initial adjustment period, and things will get better if you just give it some time."

For Birth Control "I'm 22, have never been pregnant, and had my Mirena inserted ~3 weeks ago. Other than some slight cramping during and some moderately worse cramping later that day and for a few days after (nothing pain killers can't handle) it's been great! I used to have really heavy, really painful periods (which is why I went with Mirena over the paragard) and though I was supposed to get my period the week after they put it in, I haven't had anything but super light, almost non-existent spotting."

For Birth Control "I have had the Mirena in for a year now. I'm 29 and I haven't had babies. I've tried all sorts of birth control pills and NuvaRing. All they ever did was cause depression and mood swings. Mirena, on the other hand, has been a blessing to my uterus. I had slight cramping the first day or two and since then my periods have disappeared. I haven't had a period in 6 months, no monthly symptoms either. Mr. Mirena deserves a trophy and a million-dollar mansion for his kind help."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I started Mirena in 2016 for endometriosis causing ovarian cysts. As far as birth control, I use it as a secondary method, but it's been effective. I've had no periods and maybe 10 episodes of light spotting in almost 5 years, none of which lasted more than one day. I've had a few noticeable cysts in that time (some abdominal tenderness), but nothing like the pain I would have prior to insertion. For treating my endometriosis, it works as it is meant to. The bad: within 2 months of insertion, I gained over 20 lbs. I've steadily gained weight around my abdomen since. Not all has been related to Mirena, but I have gained about 50 lbs in 4 1/2 years, and I know that Mirena is a huge factor. My cystic acne had also gotten worse, but I'm not sure if it's related. I'm due to get Mirena taken out in a few months and am looking into alternative treatments as I don't want to continue to gain weight."

For Birth Control "I had Mirena placed in on September 12, 2014. I just had my second child in July 2014 so the insertion was not painful! I liked the concept of having Mirena but now that I have it, I have not stopped bleeding since!!! I can't have sex ever because I am always spotting! It is just annoying!! I am really considering getting it removed! I would much rather have my period once a month than bleed every single day!!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I’m peri-menopausal, 49-year-old, and have had very heavy bleeding for the past few years, which got progressively worse until last year when I had an ablation and Mirena inserted in December 2020. We’re now in May 2021. I bleed 20+ days with a break of maybe 8 or 9 days. Starts with spotting for a few days, followed by a period, then more spotting. My sex life with my partner is non-existent. I get PMS symptoms, sore breasts, bloating, constipation. I don’t bleed as heavily as I used to, but it’s just so prolonged I’m sick of it. I’m calling my GP this week to arrange removal."

For Birth Control "I have been very happy with Mirena. It was inserted at my 6-week postpartum appointment. I was nervous but felt nothing. It felt like a Pap smear. I did have spotting for about 6 weeks after. I started a diet program two weeks after insertion, and I have lost 21 lbs in the last 6 weeks, so don't believe it when people tell you that they gained a whole bunch of weight after insertion. I have no complaints, and I would recommend Mirena to anyone."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "Mirena gave me my life back. It’s not perfect, but I gave it time, and it has been good for me. I tried controlling my endometriosis with oral contraceptives, with nasty side effects and little success. I was really scared to try the Mirena IUD because it’s invasive, and I was so tired of side effects, but I had few options left. I spotted a lot for 3 months with some cramping, but now, at the 6-month mark, I have very little bleeding and hence very little pain. This is a huge improvement. In terms of side effects, my skin isn’t great, but it’s a trade-off I’m willing to make. Without this IUD, I would have no quality of life."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I'm looking for reviews to see if I made a bad decision. I'm 46, and I had the device inserted on December 4, 2019, to help reduce my heavy periods. Well, today is February 17, 2020, and I'm still bleeding! Every day!! I'm so tired of using Kotex and tampons, I don't know what to do. Plus, I have acne and some emotional instability. I had a visit with my doctor on February 7, and she said to give it another month. Well, we'll see. I'm leaning towards having it removed in a month, yet I'm so eager to have no more periods!"

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had the Mirena inserted in July 2018. I had it inserted to help with heavy periods and cramping. Since having this Mirena inserted, I have not stopped spotting/bleeding the entire time. I may stop for a few days here and there but literally have been spotting or bleeding every day since July of 2018. I am now scheduling to have this taken out. It has been expensive with all the pads and tampons I have paid for the last 18 months. It’s not worth it."

For Birth Control "Had Mirena twice after my son was born in 2007 (one for 5 years and the other one was past due and was removed after 8 years), never got pregnant even after the 5-year mark (don't recommend though). During Mirena, I had absolutely no issues. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. No period on site, never got pregnant. June 4th, 2020, I decided to have Mirena removed because I was ready to have another baby. Doctor advised for me to wait until the first full menstrual period to conceive, but I did not wait. Oops. :) They say it should take 6 months to 1 year to get pregnant after Mirena removal, but turns out today is August 25 and I am now 10 weeks pregnant. I am 35 years old (that delicate age), and I can say that I am a true believer of this contraceptive. It is true; it might not be for everyone, but it sure did work for me. 100% recommend."

For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding "I had the Mirena inserted 4 months ago. They say that the bleeding is abnormal in the first six months. But really, bleeding for an entire 4 months with just a few days of no bleeding is ridiculous. I am so tired of wearing pads and having to worry about the bleeding. It puts a damper on a lot of things. The bleeding isn't heavy, but it is enough to have to wear a pad constantly. I hope when the 6-month mark hits, this will clear up a little more. The pain is not a problem. I had three kids and had no problem with the pain. It is the bleeding, the constant bleeding, that gets on my last nerve. I will let it roll until the six-month mark and hope for a change."
