For Epilepsy "The seizure control is great. One big problem with this drug is that it can cause hypothyroidism. My son was hypothyroid before going on this medication, and now it has dropped his levels drastically even when he is on thyroid medication. If this doesn't improve with more thyroid medication, he will have to stop the Aptiom. I hope this doesn't happen because it's the only one he can take."

For Epilepsy "My experience with Aptiom has not been good. For one thing, it does not control my seizures. I would say maybe worse. I am on 400 mg a day. I know this is a low dose, but if I take more, it makes me angry and nuts. An hour after I take it, I change personality. I go way back into my memory and, of course, not the good memories. It is really hard to function when this happens. My anxiety is also worse on this. I was told that a person who suffers from mental illness like anxiety and depression and others should be leery of taking Aptiom. I don't know if this is true, but for what it does to me, I wonder. Hopefully, my doctor can find another anticonvulsant that works. I am running out of ones to try. My next step after all my options are up is to go to natural remedies."

For Seizures "I was using 800 mg Aptiom samples for about two months, and they worked great. Pros: no seizures or auras, fewer side effects, and once-a-day tablets. Cons: way too expensive!! ($500 a month) and nausea... but only lasted a month. Wish my neurologist had told me the cost before getting off Keppra and getting my hopes up with Aptiom. Doesn’t make sense. Next, oxcarbazepine."

For Epilepsy "I have been on Aptiom for over two years for temporal and frontal lobe seizures. I was taking 800 mg once daily, but I have changed to 600 mg twice daily. I also take lamotrigine 100 mg twice daily. I have fewer seizures, but I do have migraines at least once a month, and I do experience stomach tremors. Twice I had to go to the ER because of the tremors being so severe, but still, less than I would have had to go for the seizures."

For Seizures "I have medication-resistant epilepsy, and Aptiom was the medication that worked for the longest time. It was expensive, but insurance was willing to cover it. It made me tired, which was rough since I had to take it twice daily. It was also the medication I was on the longest before the resistance kicked in."

For Epilepsy "I was started on this because nothing else would work, and yes, there are side effects I have to deal with. I was always weak in the stomach, but now when my stomach trembles, I projectile vomit. So being dizzy and having my stomach trembling scare me. The migraines come about two times a month, and they are debilitating, to say the least. I'm not sure which is worse: the seizures or the side effects. I take 400 mg twice a day to keep my levels steady, but I've begun to feel uneasy in my emotions as well. I cry a lot or get angry for no reason. Not sure if I'll continue on this. Also, I had to fight my insurance to pay for it, or it would cost me $2,000.00 a month. Who can afford that? Now I pay $200 for a three-month supply."

For Seizures "I’ve been on Aptiom 800 mg for around 2 months now. Previously, I was on lamotrigine, which caused daily headaches, weekly migraines, skin irritation, haziness, and trouble sleeping. Switching to Aptiom has definitely helped with the decrease of side effects, which have been around weekly headaches and trouble sleeping. I also should note that I do not get my period anymore. I am a 21-year-old who has never missed a period before taking this drug. I have confirmed through urine tests at my GP and on my own that I am not pregnant. So, I am currently waiting to see my neurologist to talk about these issues. Just figured I should put this out there in case others were thinking of taking this drug. It is also SUPER expensive, costing me around $350 a month in Canada, luckily, I have private insurance through work, so they cover 80%. I have been seizure-free since going on any anti-seizure medication, so I can’t really compare the drugs I’ve tried to that."

For Seizures "Taking Aptiom, Dilantin, and Quetiapine. Nocturnal seizures due to Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). Difficult to control seizures with any meds. I think Aptiom helps most of the time, but may have several seizures suddenly for 5+ days in a stretch... then nothing for a couple of weeks. Feel very on edge and am severely thirsty, especially after bathing. Doctor doesn't respond to my concerns as he seems challenged by my situation. Hope to get a referral to a Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) clinic close to home, hoping to find other meds."

For Seizures "Been on Aptiom for about a year at a dose of 800 mg. I had 2 seizures in a year on a dose of 800 mg a day. It is very expensive, doc bumped up to 1000 mg a day now. New doc and will be leaving Aptiom."
