For Acne "I started doxycycline because I got bad hormonal acne after going off of my birth control pill. However, I’m on my 3rd day of it, and my skin is so much worse than it ever has been. I’m getting dry patches, which never happened before, and tons of breakouts on my forehead. I’m also getting little bumps all over my shoulders and horrible acne on my neck. To top it all off, I threw up three times as well. I understand that it’s supposed to get worse before it gets better, but I really don’t think the side effects are worth it."

For Acne "I was prescribed doxycycline for my acne. I can't express enough that you should NOT go on this medication. My GP had told me that the medication could cause mild nausea, but I wasn’t aware of the extent of this. When I took a pill, it gave me the worst nausea, I would feel sick for up to an hour. A lot of the time, I would actually throw up as well alongside this. The sickness would also take a while to kick in, so I could be in public feeling fine one minute and the next minute I’m vomiting. You’re probably thinking, why didn’t I just come off it, but I was literally desperate to get rid of my acne because of how it was making me feel. I would have done anything. After about 6 months, my acne had pretty much cleared up, but then a few months later, it came straight back again, and I would say it was a lot worse. I then had to go on Accutane after anyway, so it was a complete waste of time and definitely not worth it considering the side effects. Would not recommend at all!"

For Acne "I have struggled with acne since I was 14 years old, and from about 19 it has been strictly hormonal acne around the jaw and mouth. It's been hard to get help for, as this is most common in women. About 10 weeks ago, my doctor stepped up the intensity and prescribed me doxycycline 100 mg for 3 months. I now live in Seoul, and funny enough, the purging period kicked in 2 days after I landed. It was the absolute worst acne I've ever seen on my face. It lasted the next 3 weeks, and in a place where everyone is so beautiful and with flawless skin, it was all the more horrible to look like this. But I knew it was the purging phase. I had been there before, years prior, but got scared and quit. I am now 2 weeks away from finishing the 3 months and excited to see how my skin behaves after. We must see it through."

For Acne "I've been taking Doxy for a while until my face cleared up, and I just had a lot of scarring on my face. Later on (mid-December), I started to break out again, and I had leftover Doxy. It doesn't seem to be as effective as before, but it definitely works. You have to be patient and take it when needed. I take it 2x daily. You really want to eat a meal with this medication, not eating a meal could make you feel nauseous and could make you throw up."

For Skin or Soft Tissue Infection "I've been on this med for 5 weeks now for a post-surgical preventative as part of my incision line is not closing and is draining - tried it with and without food - no difference in decreasing the nausea. Finally asked the doc for zofran based on a consult with my pharmacist. This has eliminated the nausea and vomiting. Looking forward to being off this as I'm contributing my fatigue and lightheadedness to this med."

For Rosacea "I was dealing with mild rosacea, mostly cheeks. I was prescribed doxy for 2 months at a 100 mg daily dose. It took about two weeks, and my skin started to improve. I also had to be strict on my diet: very low sugar, no dairy, low histamine foods. I am already a vegetarian. I am at a month of treatment, and my skin looks really good. DO NOT take this medicine on an empty stomach, and if you can add probiotics, do it so you won't have an upset stomach (this medication is really hard on it). I did the mistake of taking this pill with no food, and I immediately threw up. I also use SPF 50 every day. I do not know what will happen to my skin after I stop this medication, but I can honestly say it has helped me tremendously."

For Acne "Was prescribed doxycycline for painful cystic acne. I took 2 tablets each night after dinner. I don't recommend taking on an empty stomach. This medication causes extreme nausea. Even when I eat, I still feel nauseous and anxious sometimes. Stomach feels like it's almost contracting like a muscle or something. I have vomited several times after taking, likely due to not eating enough to help absorb the medication. It also makes me feel a little unaware, but it has helped a lot with my acne. If you're willing to deal with the likely side effects, it will probably work."

For Acne "I tried it for a week. Then I chose to stop taking it. Yes, it definitely did its part to clear out and fade away my acne slowly. But don't get too happy, as it is always going to come with a price. You are not going to believe when it comes to side effects on my body. The first two days, I started feeling numb in my body. I lost my appetite. My weight suddenly dropped. At first, I thought I could still deal with it. But on the fifth day, it became worse. I started vomiting and feeling nauseous like every single minute! I don't feel like doing anything except just lying down to sleep. Then my stomach pain killed me every time. Is it worth getting acne vanished? No, if you're not strong enough to deal with the side effects on your daily activities and routines."

Doxycycline for Acne "I took Monodox for 4 days, and I had to stop because it made me so nauseous. One night I actually threw up. I don't know if it was because I take birth control too, but either way, it's not something I would do again."

For Acne "I would not recommend doxycycline to anyone. My GP never said anything about side effects, and the box I was given was blank and had no leaflet, so I had no idea about this drug. First day, I threw up even after taking it with food. Every time I take it, I feel ill for a few hours after. My eyes are sensitive to almost everything, my chest feels tight at times, and I have to stop and breathe in and out for a few minutes. My acne is now in places I have never had it. I've been on it for 35 days, and my acne is the worst it's ever been (maybe a purge). At the end of the day, antibiotics are not the fix for acne, they only work for a few months before you become resistant. Seeing as I have been on another antibiotic two times, I think it's safe to say I'm resistant, so this drug is pointless. I think maybe everyone saying, 'oh, it works' is because it's their first time on antibiotics, so of course it works, that is until it returns three months later. I'm just going on Accutane."

For Acne "I was having flare-ups on my left cheek that would not go away and were leaving scars. My dermatologist explained that I needed hydroquinone to fight the hyperpigmentation on the surface of my skin and doxycycline to handle the internal cause. She suggested I take it twice a day with food for 2 months. I started taking it and noticed my skin texture got better, but I was feeling lethargic, and 3 times since taking it I have had horrible vomiting and piercing headaches that I can only describe as my brain pushing against the inside of my skull. I have noticed a few bumps on my chest, but my skin does seem a little bit better, but not enough for me to accept the side effects. The vomiting affects my work, and I get chest and side pains after. I am not even a month in, and I refuse to deal with the side effects anymore."

For Acne "I started this drug to help with the bumps under my skin. I would like to say it's acne, but the reality is the doctor and I really had no idea. He put me on doxycycline to help fight the infection. Firstly, the instructions on these meds are very unclear. It says to not take it with milk and on an empty stomach, so I did that and puked on the bus, which was very uncomfortable and gross. So, the next day I took it with food, and guess what? Fifteen minutes later I was puking in the bathroom at work. The next day I took it with toast and I had a painful stomach ache all day. I just can't seem to win on these meds. I went five days with puking every morning at work. Acne-wise, my face has cleared up, but I'm unsure if it's because of the meds or the cream."

For Acne "I didn't like taking doxycycline. I was prescribed for about a year before I gave up. Acne got monumentally worse and my hormones were imbalanced, even with my IUD. I would get, I would have only one beverage and vomit uncontrollably. 0/10 do not say yes to this prescription."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I went to my ER with severe abdominal pain and found out it was a UTI. The doctor prescribed doxycycline 100 mg, 2x a day, and I have only taken two pills, in addition to what I took before I was discharged. The first time I took it with food (sausage and mac and cheese), and I was puking and had a headache, which I took Advil for. The second time I took it without food, and I still puked. Stopping this medication and getting switched ASAP!!"

For Prostatitis "Truly a miserable and demanding drug. You MUST take it when it demands to be in your body once you've started, and you MUST take it a specific amount of time after eating. You MUST not miss a single dose, or you'll be set back days of your already months-long regimen. If you miss this window, you must discover for yourself, you will vomit the medicine back up hard enough to bust blood vessels in your eyes unless you've got a gut of steel. No medicine should be allowed to have this hold on people who are already sick. If your doctor tells you doxycycline is the only option, do not listen and do not accept this script. Ask for something else. Don't even give it a chance. Doxycycline will take control of you, and it will feel like it's never going to end."
