For Bacterial Infection "I was absolutely terrified to take this after reading all the negative reviews and really scary possible side effects. But I had to for a ureaplasma bacteria infection in my bladder that no other antibiotic can treat. I was experiencing extremely uncomfortable bladder symptoms, and after hesitating for a week, I finally took the first dose. Doxycycline is really hard on the stomach, and I learned really quickly to always eat something at least 15 minutes before taking a dose (even just a piece of toast), unless I wanted horrible stomach cramps and vomiting. Otherwise, I had barely any side effects. Just a small headache and dizziness the first couple of days. I felt really encouraged by the positive reviews on here and wanted to add one to hopefully ease some minds! Side effects are rare but can happen, and every person's body reacts differently, so if this is one you absolutely have to take, stay calm, take deep breaths, listen to your body, and take a probiotic!"

For Skin or Soft Tissue Infection "Three days into taking doxycycline for a skin infection, and I have terrible heartburn and constantly feel nauseous. My doctor's directions said to try and take this on an empty stomach. DON’T...unless you enjoy vomiting. Even when I take it with food and drink plenty of fluids, the nausea and heartburn come roaring in a few hours later. Trying to clear up a cyst that recently developed on my scalp. I am super self-conscious about it, and to be honest, I’d rather have the cyst stay there forever than endure another day of this medication."

For Lyme Disease "I was bitten on my lower leg Thursday and noticed a quarter-size red rash that was warm, hard, dizziness, and pain up my leg. Took ibuprofen/Benadryl and went to bed. Friday AM, the rash was more red with two clear puncture marks. Called my telehealth and got an antibiotic for a spider bite. Friday PM, the bite was worse. Puncture marks/rash both bigger. Saturday AM, went to urgent care and the doctor said it was Lyme. Rash was a bullseye, hard, swollen, and 6”x5”. The doctor prescribed 100mg of doxycycline 2x/day for 5 days. Drank water/took without food for the first 4 days without issues. By the 5th day, had a fever/threw up (not sure if Lyme or doxycycline related). By PM, lost vision, eye pressure, headache, and chest pain. Let PCP know and stopped due to severe side effects. Started amoxicillin. I feel doxycycline can be great to stop Lyme (noticed rash decreased with bruising within 4 days), but side effects weren’t worth it. Developed secondary rashes on legs/hips, not sure if due to Lyme or doxycycline."

For Lyme Disease "I have been prescribed this medication two times, and both times, after several weeks of taking it, I developed severe stomach pain resulting in vomiting. I also had severe sunburn after 15 minutes in the sun. Mild itching all over."

Doxycycline for Acne "I'm taking Monodox and using Tretinoin. I've only been using both for a week now, but I can say I'm already seeing improvements. I had initial breakouts, which is normal, and I used to get really nauseous and throw up from taking Monodox, but I guess I completely forgot that my dermatologist told me to take Monodox with food. Trust me, that makes a world of difference. I'm really excited to see where my skin is going to be in a few weeks because my acne is really clearing up and all that's left are the red spots. Remember: take it with food."

For Acne "Used Apo doxycycline for a month. Side effects included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and severe headaches. I also developed sensitivity to light. It cleared most of my skin, but the side effects were really bad, and I had to stop. I should have stopped earlier but was so desperate to get rid of my acne that I kept going for a month. Within a week of stopping treatment, my acne came back. Meanwhile, it took a few months for my gut to feel normal again. My appetite only returned to normal after about 3 months. This treatment was very disappointing as it cleared my acne short-term but was not sustainable and had terrible side effects. I am now using Duac gel, which has no side effects and has reduced my acne."

For Acne "I've been taking doxy for 3 months, and I'll be stopping soon because I was only prescribed for 3 months. At first, I thought it would not work, but I kept taking it, and after 1 and a half months, my face cleared. There was no acne on my face anymore, and even though when it is my time of the month, I don't get acne. But be sure to take a full meal before taking it, I think I threw up 3 times because I forgot to take it after I had eaten. My only problem now is that I hope after I stop, the acne won't come back anymore. Fingers crossed."

For Acne "Doxycycline for acne works wonders! I will say if your acne has gotten really bad and you just started on doxycycline, you will need to be patient with this drug and give it time to work its magic. I highly recommend taking it with food, or else you will throw up, as I did. Taking it on a normal schedule, I have seen, does improve the use of the drug, for example, taking it every day in the morning or night around the same time is good! Remember, everybody's body responds differently to medication. But if I were to just start looking into acne medicine, I would start on this. Not too strong as Accutane, but not too weak either. I had moderate to severe cystic acne twice, and it has been able to clear both incidents. Never had bad side effects on this."

For Acne "This is my second round on doxycycline (first round lasted 3-4 months and completely cleared my acne, no purging), but it came back like 5 months after. I started doxy again, now I'm on my 10th week. I purged a ton, in fact, I'm still purging a bit, but I do see it finally getting better! This purge left me with hyperpigmentation scars all over my face! I just did a glycolic chemical peel, 70%, and oh my God, I can already see the diminishing scars, it's crazy. Please make sure you aren't using topicals before you do this."

For Pneumonia "Make sure you have some Zofran (ondansetron) to take before you take the doxycycline. It made me horrifically nauseous and caused vomiting. After that, I started taking Zofran half an hour before I took the doxycycline. Do not lie down in bed for half an hour after taking it, as it could cause irritation to your throat and stomach, causing nausea and, in my case, eventually vomiting."

For Bacterial Infection "I was prescribed doxy after being sick with a cold for 2-3 weeks. It cleared up my sinuses, and I do feel much better. However, my face has completely broken out after finishing the dose. I feel like a preteen again! It's covered with small little pimples. I wonder how long it will take to go away - hopefully not forever! Definitely take this on a full stomach and don't lay down after. I took one pill late and went to bed after, I was very nauseous and vomited the next morning."

For Rosacea "Doxycycline worked very well and very quickly for me. I noticed results within a week, and after using it for a few weeks, my skin was completely cleared up! Good deal, right? Not quite! I continued to take this medication for over a year. Suddenly, I began to have a hacking cough immediately followed by vomiting. (Coughing so hard I would vomit.) I couldn't figure it out. I began to get very sick. Couldn't eat and then couldn't even function on a daily basis. I became so sick, in fact, that I was hospitalized. I was taken off the medication, and voila! The 'draining' in my throat subsided, the cough stopped, the vomiting stopped. So be cautious!"

For Acne "I have been on this medication for what seems like a decade (but the reality is that it has been only 6-8 months). I don’t have severe acne, I suffer with breakouts that appear out of the blue around my mouth mostly and sometimes on my cheeks. This medication for me is extremely helpful if used correctly. When I first started taking it, I experienced the side effects of nausea, headaches, vomiting, etc., but this was only because I was not taking it correctly. For me, it was imperative to ensure I had food in my stomach and to take it regularly. This was every day, at the same time, preferably after food. But when I followed this regime, my cyst-like pimples cleared, and I only get the occasional tiny whitehead. However, if I forget to take it even for one day, my skin will react, causing pimples again. My doctor did recommend that I not stay on this medication for longer than 3 months, but when I expressed my reluctance to go off it, he prescribed it again. My advice is definitely to always take this with food!"

For Bacterial Infection "Had flu, some fever, and suspected pneumonia. Was put on doxycycline 200 mg to be reduced to 100 mg the next day. Wasn't eating due to loss of appetite - doctor said this medication would help. Instead, it made me vomit about 30 minutes after taking it and made me feel worse. Eventually went to the ER and was put on Zofran and Prednisolone - a much better combination for what I was experiencing."

For Pneumonia "I had bacterial pneumonia, and after four days of suffering, I was prescribed doxycycline 100 mg twice daily. After two days, the blocked and runny nose, coughing, and sneezing greatly reduced, and I started to feel much better overall. I am getting better day by day. I have lost my sense of taste and smell, which still hasn't come back. You need to finish the entire course to get the full benefits, even if you feel better. Do not take it on an empty stomach or immediately before eating, as it could make you feel sick or vomit. Also, do not immediately lie down after taking it."

For Pneumonia "Doxycycline worked well to help with my pneumonia. On the first day when I took it on an empty stomach, I felt fine, but as the next few days went by, I had some intense nausea, a mean headache, severe stomach pain, and I even vomited water back up along with mucus. I mean, it works, but I mean, with some of the side effects, it makes you wonder if it's really worth taking this specific medicine. I would seriously recommend eating when you take this medicine."

For Bacterial Infection "I have been suffering with painful sinuses for the last five weeks, alternating between the right and left side. I have been using a saline salt solution to rinse my sinuses once a day, using a sea salt nasal spray, steaming with Olbas oil, paracetamol, and ibuprofen. Then I woke up with a temp, chills, aches, obviously all the nasty sinus, ear, jaw, and head pain. Doctors prescribed doxycycline, 2 x 100mg first day and 1 x 100mg for 7 more days, and a steroid nasal spray. I’m only on the end of day two (three capsules so far), but my temp has gone, the pain isn’t as intense, and I’m hoping by tomorrow or the day after at the latest I will start to feel a lot more human. I’m allergic to penicillin (facial swelling, vomiting, rash, etc.), erythromycin makes me feel super nauseous, and metronidazole makes me feel like death. Doxycycline 10/10. Amazing. Taken on a full stomach, not one side effect at all. AMAZING!!!!"

For Acne "Been taking doxy for 3 months now. Before doxy, I had mild acne on my forehead and some cystic ones that I would get around my period. Anyway, so I'm taking 100 mg doxy twice per day + Tretinoin + Acanya. I don't have pimples anymore but still have some dark spots. If I should get a pimple, it would be a really small one, and usually, it's dried out after a day or two. Today, I went back to my dermatologist for a check-up, and she put me on doxy again for another 3 months (so six months in total). She said she's adding another 3 months so that I will be completely breakout-free. Only bad side effect I had with doxy is sometimes it makes me throw up."

For Bronchitis "Glad to know I'm not alone after reading all the reviews. My doctor prescribed this to treat bronchitis/possible pneumonia. Doc notes and prescription label never said anything about taking with food. The only thing the doc said was to stay out of the sun and avoid caffeine. Horrible stomach churning, major dry heaving every single time after taking this crazy pill twice a day. For 10 days, I dreaded the nauseous, nausea, disgusting feeling. After all that, I'm still sick. Whomever created this pill is crazy, and so is my doctor for prescribing this to me. Amoxicillin has been fine in the past, worst experience with a pill ever. Does the vomiting mean I'm allergic to doxycycline?"

Doxycycline for Acne "Doxy is amazing. If you stick to it for a while, you will see results like you've never dreamed of. My skin looks GREAT, and people compliment it all of the time. I hope it stays like this when I finish the last pill in 3 days. I took 100 mg 2x a day for 3 months. Only drawback is the horrible nausea and vomiting I experienced when I didn't take it after or with a meal."
