"I was given doxycycline for sinusitis and a bad cough. Didn't work, and I was told it was just a virus, but I ended up with septicemia and pneumonia in the ICU and was given Levaquin. This was in July. I ended up in the hospital with the same thing but in another lung and not in the ICU this time. The first time, no fever, but the second time there was and I started to get the chills, so the doctor told me to get to the ER, where they kept me. I can't take Augmentin anymore. I think if I had been given longer than 10 days on the doxycycline, this whole situation would have been avoided, but no fever, so nobody believed me, and I almost bought the farm. It would be nice if patients who have dealt with chronic problems were listened to. My old primary care physician left, and apparently my records have disappeared thanks to the new PC program doctors/hospital started using."

"I am unsure how effective this medication is because I could only tolerate it for 2 days before I told my doctor I was pulling myself off. Taking it on an empty stomach, as prescribed, had me vomiting within an hour and created an instant MASSIVE headache. The kind that has you pressing on part of your head to make sure your brain is still in there. I had to eat a small meal before any doses. It killed my appetite and also made me feel depressed, lethargic, and apathetic. I tried to sleep through the evening doses but would wake up with a terrible headache that would take hours to kick."

"I went to the doctor on Monday with a chest infection, and he prescribed me doxycycline. I told him that I have asthma. On day 3, I had to go back to get different antibiotics due to the severe chest pain, which stopped me from eating and drinking. The doctor switched me to amoxicillin for a week. On the other hand, it seems my chest infection is starting to clear up. I wouldn't take it again unless necessary."

"This drug has really helped me several times in the past. In reading these comments, I see that some folks are under the impression that you have to avoid certain foods and other medications for the entire duration of your treatment. That is not true. Use a reputable medical website and read the info carefully. One example is dairy. You don't have to avoid dairy during your entire course of treatment, only a few hours before or a few hours after taking your pill. Some foods can keep your body from properly absorbing the medication, but once your stomach has absorbed it, you are free to eat most anything you want. I do find that yogurt helps me with the tummy issues if I eat a container every day. Just not at the same time that I take the pill. And even though it is difficult for some folks, remember to try and stay hydrated. I hope you all are feeling better soon! :)"

"I was prescribed a 7-day round of doxycycline for a stubborn sinus infection and coughing. The doxycycline started working to clear up the sinus infection after a few days, but wrecked havoc on my system. Diarrhea every day, very fatigued, and the coughing has not eased up two days after the round completed. If you have GERD or acid reflux, this medicine will make it worse, even with Nexium. It burns the esophagus, and coughing lingers. You either have a burning sore throat or cough. Yes, it works to get rid of infection, but too harsh for GERD and stomach issues."

"I've been prescribed doxy (100 mgs) for a slight infection in my chest. I have been taking them for 5 days now. Two together as one dose each day. They are making me extremely sick. I take them with a pint of water after breakfast. Nauseated on and off all day. Diarrhea several times a day. Feeling very anxious and spaced out since starting them. I have palpitations since starting them, and on day 4, I started getting pins and needles in my hands and feet. All day. Thinking of stopping them. It's awful."

"Worked really quickly with my congestion in my face and runny nose. Kept my cough at bay too. Unfortunately, after finishing the course, I can still feel it in my chest. I feel the course needed another week to beat the pneumonia. I’ll have to visit my doctor again."

"I have had six chest infections in 9 months and coughed and brought up phlegm for years and years on a daily basis. One course of this medication has somehow managed to stop my coughing and phlegm production almost completely. Side effects were diarrhea quite bad, however, to have almost no coughing etc., I would say this medication was pretty amazing. Thank you."

"I have repeated chest infections, so I have been taking these for 5 to 6 weeks for 18 months. I get treated for asthma on 3 inhalers, get put on antibiotics amoxicillin, but I realize that never worked. I would be put on doxycycline, and they worked, but I still get chest infections every 5 to 6 weeks. It is draining me, but I get put on doxycycline and steroids, and it helps me at the time. I spoke to my GP regarding different antibiotics. I said I did notice that doxycycline is definitely the best one for me. Still no answers why I am having repeated chest infections. It is so wearing me down. Any ideas out there? I am a 63-year-old woman."

"This is a hardcore drug. Side effects can be severe, so report them to your doctor immediately. The worst of it for me was the secondary yeast infection. Drink a lot of water, take with food if you can."

"Began a course of doxycycline when, as a good patient with an upper respiratory tract infection, I had adverse side effects to clarithromycin. On the 3rd day of taking it, I still feel really ill. I have a burning sensation in my upper lungs, am very weak, and if I eat within 5 minutes, I feel really uncomfortable and abnormal. There is an increase in shortness of breath and as if the food and the drug combined are affecting my blood, with shakes throughout."

"Switched from amoxicillin to doxycycline after experiencing zero improvement for the worst sinus infection I’ve ever had. After the second dose of doxycycline, I started feeling a shift, and after 4 days felt a solid 60% better. I am so thankful for doxycycline. I’m not sure how much worse I could have gotten without it."

"For the last 3 years, I've gone to all the specialists for allergy, asthma, and ENT, numerous inhalers, nasal sprays, and prednisone. Finally took my bag of meds into the asthma doc. Breathing capacity lower than when this all started! After blowing up and gaining 20 lbs, I told her I was all done poisoning myself! Next visit, I saw a N.P., she gave me 2 weeks, twice daily on Doxy and Alkalol nasal rinse (NOT alcohol). Initially, less cough, clean nasal passages, better breathing at day 3. Wow! Finally! It's working. Had the hives on my neck and chest. I'll deal with this for 11 more days because this was the magic pill! I treated my itchy chest (occupation, Esthetician), and today is day 14. Now wait to hopefully be rid of hives. I would do it all again to be rid of that cough and that gross clogged nose! That's Alkalol, NOT ALCOHOL!"

"Had sinusitis and was prescribed Doxy 100 mg every 12 hours for 7 days. After first 2 doses, started shaking and having tremors. Was up all night and couldn't sleep. Day 2, I grudgingly took dose #3 in the morning and couldn't stop shaking. Dr. switched me to Augmentin 875 mg twice a day for 14 days."

"I took a doxycycline tablet in the evening without enough water and went to bed. The next morning, I thought the pill was stuck in my throat. The next day, I felt like I had heartburn. The following day, the muscles in my throat were spasming, and I had much pain with swallowing. I believe the pill caused esophagitis. I have extreme burning when swallowing food."

"I’m now on day 4, and I feel awful. I can’t take a deep breath and was thinking of calling 111. I’ve a headache, and I’ve felt quite sick on them. I’m going to see how I feel tomorrow, then, if no better, I’m going to stop taking them. These are not for me."

"After two days of taking doxycycline as directed, I was nauseous, had a headache, and had increasingly high blood pressure (I do not have high blood pressure as a chronic condition). A doctor told me the side effects were probably a reaction to the medication. I won't use this again."

"I am on doxycycline post-COVID for an upper respiratory infection and an onset of bronchitis. I took this medication last night and experienced no side effects until this morning around 9 a.m. I have a severe stomach ache and severe diarrhea. The side effects are too overbearing for me. I will not be taking another dose of this specific antibiotic."

"Day three of taking doxycycline for a sinus infection. Side effects are minimal, but at times I feel nauseous with an upset stomach. Still can't clear my nose, especially the left nostril. The doctor recommended taking it with an antihistamine. Overall, I believe it is working but still have a few more days to tell for sure. I will follow up with my progress later."

"Given for chest infection, two tablets (100 mg) on day one, then one tablet (100 mg) a day for 6 days. On day 4, no better, no side effects either. Do I stop them or finish the course? So far, they're rubbish."

"I'm on a 10-day course, 2 a day, for an upper respiratory infection. 5 days in, and I'm better, not coughing as much, or wheezing, and the mucus has changed in color and not as much coming up when I do cough. Hopefully, this kicks it in the butt."

"Doryx is personally my super antibiotic drug. I suffer from upper respiratory infections often, I also suffer from asthma and have difficulty breathing when suffering from chest infections. The only antibiotic that works for me is Doryx. I have tried amoxicillin and other penicillin drugs, but they do not help with my respiratory condition like Doryx does. I had a flu vaccine a few years ago to prevent myself from getting the flu, but instead I got so sick from the flu vaccine I started wheezing, my chest was so tight, and I had severe body cramps, I could not walk without losing my breath. The only drug that saved me was Doryx. Within 3 days of taking Doryx, I was feeling much better and my body pains went away. I have never had any bad side effects, only slight nausea if I take it in the morning without food in my stomach, and if I take it right before bed I can suffer from heartburn."

"Worked great for my upper respiratory infection. My doctor gave me a prescription of Zofran, and I took that first and waited about ten minutes before taking the antibiotic. It solved the nausea/vomiting side effect."
