Butorphanol for Labor Pain "This was given to me during labor, as my epidural failed. It made me crazy. I closed my eyes, and while I could hear people calling my name and slapping me on the cheeks... it was almost like I was out of my body... and I just didn't respond to them at all. I finally came around enough to deliver my son, but it still hurt. It didn't help the pain at all, just made me really high (and so annoyed). I don't remember holding my son for the first time at all. Apparently, I fell asleep, and when I woke up a few hours later, I was still all messed up. I asked my mom whose baby he was! I also apparently told her I saw Jesus in the corner of the room, and that he was 'really nice' (and I'm not religious). I now list Stadol as an allergy. Never, ever again. Ever."

For Pain "I have been on injection butorphanol for 19 1/2 years due to multiple injuries sustained in an assault on active duty. Unable to take any other narcotic, I was put on this. Though people are different, it is almost impossible to get physically addicted to this medicine. It is very expensive, so after all these years of being in relative freedom from great pain, I am now bedridden due to the VA hospital refusing to pay for it anymore."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was prescribed this when I was having preterm labor contractions. They said it would help me relax and sleep and let my body calm down enough for the contractions to stop on their own. Well... The contractions stopped, but not until after I tried to convince my husband I was a stegosaurus. I don't remember much, but I do remember feeling very dizzy and nauseous until I eventually passed out. It's not something I will take again, but it did do its job of pain relief."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I had this with my first child. It was awesome! I had been up a lot of the night with contractions and was exhausted that afternoon. I knew I didn't want an epidural, so they gave me Stadol. It put me to sleep from 5 to 10 centimeters, and they woke me up when it was time to push!"

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "It was pleasant at first, very euphoric. But then I began to hallucinate. I was convinced it was 1994 and I was my own mother. But the contractions were still just as painful, and because I was out of my mind, I could not prepare for them or breathe through them or anything. It was a very bad experience."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I had an intolerance to this drug, and it was horrible. And immediate! I became delusional and paranoid within a minute of it being put into my IV. I then became very sick and continued to vomit through my mouth and nose for 6 hours. My eyes kept rolling back in my head as if I was going to pass out, but with the constant vomiting, I knew I could not fall asleep. I was given Stadol to alleviate pain caused by Pitocin (induced labor). I've no idea if it helped with that, for it just gave me all new horrible symptoms (nausea, stomach and throat pain from constant vomiting, the worst delusions I've ever had)."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "My labor went so quickly that my baby was born only 30 minutes after I checked into the hospital. I asked for a pain med, and they told me it was ‘too late,’ so they gave me Stadol. It didn’t help at all with the pain, but it did make me very loopy. Very disappointing. It probably caused my baby’s issue with not latching on right away since it was administered only 15 minutes before her birth."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I opted for Stadol during labor pains while I was waiting for an epidural. I immediately regretted the decision. I was so disoriented that I barely knew where I was. I got very sick too. It was a horrible experience, and all I could do was wait for it to wear off."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "This drug knocked me out during labor, which was great because I was crying and almost hyperventilating during my contractions (I was induced). They woke me up when I was fully dilated to push. Will ask for it again with the next baby."

For Pain "This nasal spray was very effective in stopping severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea. It worked for several hours when nothing else was held down. Why would doctors give oral medicines for vomiting when a nasal alternative is available?"

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "They gave me this when I was at about 4-5 centimeters. I went into labor at midnight, so I was on 0 hours of sleep and was in terrible pain. They put this in my IV, and it was amazing. They told me I’d feel drunk, and I did. I then got an amazing 5-hour nap, which was well needed, considering I was in labor for 21 hours."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "My on-call OB/GYN put me on Stadol because I asked her not to use Demerol. I told her I didn't want to feel drugged while in labor, so she chose Stadol. I was so out of it my husband videotaped my delivery, and my eyes were literally rolling in the back of my head. As far as taking pain away, who could tell - I was out of my mind. Anyone who can take this must be used to strong pain relievers."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was given Stadol for labor pains with my second child. I had had an epidural with my first, but didn't want to be bedridden during labor, so I wanted to try something else. This medication did not take away pain at all for me. It did, however, make me very high (which I was not expecting as it was not explained to me that there would be effects like this, and I didn't know it was a narcotic). I would fall asleep, or half asleep, in between contractions and then wake up in pain, scream, then go back out of it when the contraction ended. When it came to pushing, I was not really present in the moment, I stopped pushing when his head was halfway out, and I bruised his precious little face (he was fine, but it was scary). I felt every part of birth and was in a weird state of mind that I didn't even look at my child when he came out because I was so out of it. :( I definitely don't recommend this, I would have rather had a completely natural birth."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "When I was in labor with my son, they actually gave me two doses of Stadol through my IV, and it knocked out my headache completely and eased the pain of my contractions slightly, but my son was on a nerve, so I still ended up with an epidural afterward."

Butorphanol for Pain "I was diagnosed with ice pick headaches. My doctor prescribed Stadol nasal spray. My directions were to use it when I felt the headache begin, then stop when the headache disappeared. I started getting the symptoms and used the nasal spray. It made me feel worse. The only way to explain it was I felt high. The feeling was so awful that I immediately threw the nasal spray in the trash. I read the other reviews, and I'm happy to see others getting relief from this medicine. I wish I were one. Now I was wakened up with the stabbing pain on the right side of my head, with nothing but a prayer to get me through this."

For Pain "I was given Stadol a time ago while going to the hospital for a bad migraine. The medicine worked so well that I asked my doctor if I could have a prescription. I took this medicine for over a year for all my pain. When first taking it, I was loopy. I had to take Phenergan with it to control the nausea. But this painkiller was a blessing. I used to get sick from home movies and motion sickness. After taking this, I was able to watch home movies and even got to ride on a ride with my child for the first time in a while without getting sick. After my body got used to it, all I felt from it was relief. I am off it now, and I had no side effects from stopping. I did not stop slowly either. It was not addicting at all. Not having pain was addicting."

For Pain "I was initially prescribed this for frequent migraines. I cannot take triptan meds, so if Fioricet didn't work for a severe migraine, then I would use this. I have to say, it didn't always work for very long for the migraine pain. What it does work very well for is pain from my chronic kidney stones (I have permission from my doc to use it for the stones). Kidney stones are extremely painful, and when my Percocet does nothing for the stone pain, I take the butorphanol nose spray. It has kept me out of the ER on many occasions."

Butorphanol for Pain "Omg, I was given Stadol in my arm where my IV was to start. I went to the ER for throwing up and throat burning, and the right side of my throat was closing up like swollen and on fire. They took blood, a pee test, and came back with Zofran in my IV and had me drink this cocktail stuff that had lidocaine in it. Made my throat burn worse. I think they gave me WAY too much of Stadol. Weirdest feeling ever! Felt like I was flipping backwards, my body was being pulled, forcing my whole body, brain, and eyes. Felt so panicky, freaked out, the worst drunk feeling ever. I would NOT recommend this to anyone. Coming down from that scary high. Still can't stand up by myself. Do not take it. I would rather have the pain than have to take this again."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was given Stadol during induced labor, it was miraculous. However, after 20 hours, I was still not dilating. I was given an epidural and began hour-long labor. Stadol, in conjunction with the epidural, finally allowed me to have a child without surgical intervention. I was also given Stadol post-hysterectomy via IM injections. The only drug that helped pain for both."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was so upset during my second delivery when they gave me Stadol again after the horrible experience with this drug during my first delivery. Same EXACT issue: it did NOTHING for the pain, it made me feel drunk and completely disoriented, and yet I could feel EVERYTHING. When it wore off, pain levels were no different, except I didn’t feel completely out of control. During labor, I couldn’t focus on my breathing, I couldn’t speak clearly - it was AWFUL. Second delivery, I told the hospital NO Stadol, it was in my birth plan directive. No epidural, no Stadol. My doc didn’t make it in time, and I started feeling really woozy and the room spinning. I asked my husband - tell me they didn’t give me Stadol! Sure enough, they had. Grrrrrrr! They said “just in case I wanted an epidural.” I was so angry."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was given Stadol for labor pain management. While it helped me not to feel connected to the pain, I didn’t like how it made me feel instantly. It forced me into a drowsy state. I couldn’t sleep and began having trouble breathing. Following my delivery, I spent the first night crying because I couldn’t sleep and became paranoid and scared that I’d stop breathing in the middle of the night. Not only did I not sleep, but the few times I dozed off, it started off with a hallucination. It has been 5 days since I gave birth, and I’m still having trouble sleeping at night. If any of you moms can give me some tips on what helped you wean this thing out of your system, please do. Thank you."

Butorphanol for Pain "I'm a retired L&D nurse. Stadol/Phenergan and then Stadol/Benadryl IV was given routinely for labor pain. I began self-medicating with Stadol/Phenergan to treat severe insomnia. I found myself unable to stop without experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. When I began abusing Stadol in 1997, it was not stored with the narcotics, nor was it included in the daily narcotic count. I used for 4 years. I self-reported to employee health and entered into treatment. Stadol, in my experience, has extreme abuse and addiction potential. I experienced extreme withdrawal symptoms for 5 days and then extreme cravings for years. I am clean today and have been drug-free for over 18 years and was able to return to nursing (meeting all requirements of the State Licensing Board). I share this experience in the hopes of spreading more awareness, especially to healthcare professionals, on the potential abuse and addiction of Stadol."

For Labor Pain "I have been stuck in prodromal labor for over two weeks, and after a lot of talking into and lack of sleep, I agreed with my midwife to try 1 mg (only half of the normal dose) of Stadol with Zofran to ensure that I get some rest. Not only did I not rest, but my contractions got stronger (still not productive) and more painful, the room was spinning, and I still threw up for the duration. It kicked up contractions to 2 minutes long with only 30 seconds in between on top of the vomiting and dizziness. Not to mention that I became very difficult to deal with and talk to at this point. It made a bad and emotionally trying day even worse. I will never use or recommend this drug."

Butorphanol for Pain "I was prescribed Stadol at the age of 15 after suffering from migraine headaches that left me holding my head and literally screaming for my parents to help me. Did Stadol work? Oh, absolutely. Unfortunately, it also gave me my first high - my first experience with opioids and years upon years of substance abuse once the nose spray was discontinued. YES, it helps. But I'd NEVER recommend it to anyone. It is highly addictive. I'd love to have the chance to tell that family doc from many years ago how screwed up it was to prescribe this to a young kid."
