Butorphanol for Labor Pain "Was given Stadol by the anesthesiologist. Was told it was for pain and distraction. When it kicked in, I started to hallucinate. My mother was in the room with me holding my hand, and I explained that I saw deer, and the entire room looked like it was wrapped in shiny plaid wrapping paper. The anesthesiologist said it was normal to see things, then explained the next steps and had me sign papers, which I was not in any state to do. I’m glad that I didn’t freak out from the hallucinations, but it did NOTHING for my pain. I felt every contraction with the addition of hallucinations."

For Labor Pain "I was given Stadol 20 years ago during my labor with my son. I ended up hallucinating for three to four hours and becoming paranoid. I feared the hospital was going to take the baby from me, I didn't know who my husband was, and I was afraid I would have my driver's license taken away and I wouldn't be able to work. It was horrible, and I kept this all to myself in my drug haze/paranoid/hallucinatory purgatory. I lost hours of time and 'came to' when I was signing my name to receive an epidural. In my drug haze, I had discussed getting an epidural, but I don't remember any of it. I was just so glad to have my sanity back that I didn't care. I literally was so grateful to not be insane that I invited my mother-in-law to stay for the birth nine hours later. I feel horrible that I subjected my newborn son to this drug, and it was one of the most vivid and horrific experiences of my life that I still remember 20 years later."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was given Stadol to help with contraction pains. It made me feel drunk, and I was super giggly and happy. I could still feel all the pain, physically, but my brain didn't care! I was having fun, laughing, conversations through intense contractions. It was timed perfectly somehow, and I was given a second dose right before my epidural. I felt the needle go in, felt ALL the pain from the epidural, but my brain just couldn't care less! I didn't flinch at all, and I talked casually to my husband through the whole thing. It was a fantastic experience for me, and as I'm going to a different hospital for my next delivery, I'm going to have to ask them for the same treatment!"

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was given IV Stadol along with Benadryl, followed by an intramuscular dose of Stadol for labor pains. It did exactly what the doctors said it would - it takes the edge off but you’ll still feel your contractions, and they’ll still hurt. I also feel that its effects wore off relatively quickly. It’s a good choice if you’re looking to avoid the epidural shot, but if you’re looking for complete pain relief, Stadol won’t provide that. When given through an IV, you’ll feel the effects of the drug almost instantly."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "As soon as they pushed it into my IV, I was immediately extremely dizzy and hallucinating. Can’t say it relieved my pain, but I was so distracted by the hallucinations that the pain was not in the forefront of my mind. Hallucinated rainbow circles bouncing around the room and had the “spins,” as if I were way too drunk. It wore off within 1-2 hours. Generally unhelpful for my labor pain, but not a completely negative experience. Just not what I needed or was expecting."

Butorphanol "Stadol is a great way to treat migraines and other illnesses like Occipital Neuralgia. I use it as a last resort. I started using it in 2002, since then it’s been a mainstay ever since. A few caveats: It is very addictive. The first time I used it, 6-8 hours later my nose was looking for it. I have been told by my doctor that you need to change the nostril every day, 24 hours. If anyone can help finding a solution, please post. Also, I have had an issue: if I use Zomig in the same nostril as Stadol, it made the migraines far worse."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "Had this drug with my first child's delivery for labor pains and felt as if I was injected with heroin! I couldn't breathe, like literally had to tell myself to breathe and had hallucinations like images were floating and had the image of being smeared along with a huge pumpkin."

For Pain "I was put on Stadol nasal spray about a month after neck surgery. It worked fairly well, but electrifying pain down both arms returned in about 2-3 hours. Not able to lay down at all, I slept on an incliner sofa with a bottle on the table to my left. Early one morning, I found myself slumped over to my right and knew what was going to happen. I had to get that bottle and screamed in pain, waking my husband. I don't think it should be used long-term, it irritated nasal passages. If you are addicted, then get help, not fair to others who aren't."

For Pain "I have had migraines for 35 years. At times I was prescribed 250 mg of Demerol that could be taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed. If that didn't work, I was to take 10 mg of Morphine. Then I read about Stadol and took the article to my doctor. He said it sounded promising. I would get a migraine and would take my Stadol. Within a few minutes, I would go to sleep and stay asleep for exactly 4 hours. When I woke up, my head felt so much better. I used that medicine for years and only used it if I had to. I left Kaiser and went to UH. I was kept on Butorphanol but tried everything, including Botox, with no luck. She left. I went to a new doctor who said I could no longer get the nasal spray because it was outlawed. My migraines at times last days. I get them often. I take nothing for them. When they are bad, my left eye droops. I sometimes drag my left foot, and at their worst, my body shakes. I take no narcotics, they don't work, so why take them."

For Pain "I was recently prescribed this medication for migraines. I used it for the first time a few days ago for a migraine that lasted 11 hours. I took four doses over that time and experienced no relief at all. In fact, it made me feel even worse - all spacey, sick, and dizzy - and not in a nice way. The only painkiller that has ever worked for my migraines was Demerol, and I don't see my doctor giving me that any time soon. Such a shame since butorphanol sounded so good, being a strong narcotic nasal spray. I was really hoping it would work."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "Worked well for a long, induced labor that was not progressing. Since I was in labor for days, this medication helped with pain once I was exhausted during the last 24 hours. Helped me rest and relax to prepare for pushing hours later."

Butorphanol for Pain "I used Stadol for pain associated with reflex sympathetic dystrophy. It was very helpful during flare-ups and cold weather. Very effective for short-term pain when used with a longer-acting pain medication."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was in labor with my 2nd child. My nurse told me it was too late for an epidural. I was given Stadol by the hospital nurse taking care of me. I was falling asleep between contractions while giving birth. The nurse was holding my leg up and yelling at me to push when I did not feel contractions and didn't let me just push with my contractions. I tore inside and tore outside from pushing my baby out while being yelled at and struggling to stay awake. This medication did not help my pain. My nurse used it to make me sleepy, so her job was easier. My child's father shows sadness in his eyes talking about how pitiful I was during childbirth after being given Stadol. I've never had a good birth experience. Mother of 3. Maybe there's no such thing in the U.S.A?"

Butorphanol for Pain "Was very helpful. A doctor prescribed Stadol to me when I was 19. Before I realized it, I was taking it even when I didn't really need it and was quickly addicted. I've been addicted to opiates ever since. It's been a long, rough road, and I'm currently clean, but this was so not worth the pain it helped. Doctors should never prescribe this to anyone to take home and take whenever they want. In a controlled setting only."

For Anesthesia "I had this medicine during a recent surgery, rather than propofol. When I awoke, I woke up somewhat naturally, but for the first 45 minutes, I was disoriented and got people's names wrong."

Butorphanol for Labor Pain "I was given Stadol early on in labor, and I felt like I could not open my eyes after it was given. This was very anxiety-provoking for me because I like to be in control. But I could not open my eyes. I had visions of fluorescent flowers, a school bus, and swirls of color. But the most scary thing was that I could not snap out of it. It eventually wore off, I am guessing after an hour or two, and then I was given an epidural. In the end, I was given a C-section. Not at all how I wanted my birth experience to go. I felt like I had very little control throughout the birth, but especially when under the effects of Stadol."
