"I started on 5 mg, and it worked for about a week. I am now on 30 mg, and although I daren't stop using them, I feel that they don't work as they should. With these, I am also on a high dosage of pregabalin, duloxetine, and co-codamol. My condition is getting worse, and my patches don't help as they burn my skin :-("

"I had a series of heart surgeries two years ago due to constrictive viral and then bacterial pericarditis. I have fibrous muscles in my chest from the pressure of up to two liters of extra fluid inside my pericardium multiple times and then not healing properly after the surgeries. I have been in a lot of pain for the last two years. When I first took the patch, I was shocked at how well it alleviated my pain. I was only on 5 mcg/h, the smallest patch, and it worked wonders for me, at least for a while. After six months, we have decided to stop the patch due to what seems to be opioid-induced pain increases due to the mental effects of the drug, as well as some serious and stubborn constipation due to the opioid."

"Was put on a 20 mg patch for chronic back pain due to blood cancer. Was on this strength for over a year. Started to notice irritability around day 5. The pain was a lot better, so lowered it to a 10 mg patch, still noticed around day 5 irritability crept in. A couple of days after applying the new patch, I would wake up with a sickly headache and vomit. I was also becoming dependent on them. I would get anxious, agitated, and irritable around days 4/5. So, decided to come off them. Went to the doctor, he lowered it to the lowest dose of 5 mg for 2 months. I'm a month in and still having withdrawal symptoms, it's horrible. These patches did work for me pain-wise. Please be aware long-term use will get you addicted, and yes, you do have withdrawal symptoms from them. Can't wait till I'm off them and they are out of my system."

"I'm on my 3rd week of Butec 10 mg transdermal patch, and as yet have not felt any difference. I'm also taking tramadol, naproxen, gabapentin, all twice daily and occasionally amitriptyline. I have multiple joint arthritis, sciatica due partly to four of my discs fusing and pressing on the nerve, and also RLS. My pain is constant, my left leg has begun giving way with the sciatic pain. I've found since my total knee reconstructions two years ago, because I walk differently, my whole gait has altered, causing such hip pain at times I'm sorry I had my knee done. Has anyone else found these patches don't work? I'll keep on till I've completed the month and see what my doctor says, I guess. I'm so down with constant pain. Good luck to all."

"This patch works far better for me than hydrocodone ever did. It reduced my pain by 80-90%, and 100% relieved my severe depression and anxiety due to my bipolar disorder. Been on the same dose for 14 years now. It’s been a miracle drug for me."

"I have been taking Dilaudid in pill form for a while now. That worked wonders for my back pain, but I wanted something with a longer duration for pain around the clock without taking too many pills. My doc put me on Butrans. I’ve had the patch on for 5 days now. It’s not helping the pain as well as Dilaudid, plus it’s giving me very bad anxiety and depression, also headaches, and I’m not sleeping well. I think I’m going to go back on my pills because Butrans is making me feel too weird."

"I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and fibromyalgia. I was on Percocet and before that Norco. Nothing touched my pain. I put on my first Butrans patch last night before bed, and when I woke up, for the first time in my existence, I was not in any pain. I don’t know if this will last, but for now I am overwhelmed with gratitude. My doc started me on the lowest dose, and I still have Norco for breakthrough pain. Percocet got my pain from a 10 down to a 7. Butrans has reduced my pain to a 2. I’ve literally never had such a low level of pain in my life. Give it a try. For me, it seems to be a miracle. I also have not had any side effects whatsoever."

"I have been on the patches for about four months, and they really help. I have mild itching at the site and have little or no side effects. Sometimes I have a little dizziness. This may be due to the initial application being a little stronger upon the initial application. They are costly, so ask your doctor for a discount card."

"Butrans patches have been a blessing for me. I was so glad I made the decision to get off Percocets. I could not deal with the withdrawals and how it had my mind so screwed up. I feel so good pain-wise. Haven’t been hurting at all. Not wanting or desire going back to pills. I thank God! Butrans is the best thing I’ve encountered for my pain."

"I was started 4 weeks ago on Butrans 5 mcg, change patch every 7 days. I was in a car accident 7 years ago, have a torn rhomboid muscle, 4 herniated discs in my cervical spine, sciatica, heavy chested. I am in pain all day, but it ranges in severity. My pain was usually managed with 1 Soma and 2 to 3 Percocet a day depending on my level of activity and pain. I moved this summer and had to change all my doctors. I have been seeing this new pain management doctor, and he ignored my previous pain schedule/meds. I have given myself a few months between taking any meds twice a year so my body can readjust. In the last 5 months I've been seeing this doctor, he tried me on tramadol, which didn't help my pain at all, then Tylenol 3, which also didn't help my pain at all. Now he put me on Butrans, and I am still getting burning pain and deep pain throughout the day. Has anyone else experienced this? I haven't been on Percocet or a muscle relaxer in almost a year, and still the 3 meds are not taking my pain away."

"When I was blessed enough to have this patch, it gave me back my life. I have to have the 20 mcg for it to take away all my pain. I had a bad 27-foot fall back in 2007 that busted me all to pieces and placed me in a trauma center for 27 days and nights. The Butrans 20 mcg is the only medication I've had that totally takes my pain away. I had a nurse practitioner who owns his own business when I was first written this medication by him. Unfortunately, he sold the business to someone else, and they stopped him from writing my Butrans about a year ago. I haven’t been able to get anyone else to rewrite my prescription because they are all scared of the new government system and losing their licenses, I suppose. Anyway, I stay in pain constantly without the patch and it doesn’t look like I’m ever getting it back."

"It took two go-arounds with Butrans before I realized how good it was. I have 5 bulging discs, spinal stenosis, DDD, hip bursitis, and torn meniscus. I’m very active and fit and take a dozen or more natural supplements (turmeric, boswellia serrata, IC-II collagen, etc.) which help tremendously, but I’m in pain most of the time, extremely so if I overdo it, causing an attack so to speak. That pain is indescribable and unbearable. I have tramadol and flexeril, but after seeing a pain management specialist, he put me on Butrans 5 patch. My first attempt wasn’t successful, and I took it off. However, by default, I started using it again when I had nothing else prior to my next doctor visit. A pharmacist friend explained it all to me, so I rode it out, and it’s been a game-changer. It takes 2-3 days to reach a “steady state,” but subsequent patch applications maintain that. It doesn’t erase pain, it takes away the severity."

"My patches are not lasting 7 days. After 5th day, my pain is in full mode. Also, it takes around 24 hours to start working, and I never get them on the due day as the pharmacy never had them. Sometimes I go 1 to 2 days without."

"Great for constant pain when it actually sticks to the skin. Doesn't do much through break-through/flare-up pain. Sadly, it's difficult to get the patches to stick, even with Flonase to keep the skin from weeping/seeping pus in reaction to the glue/drug portions of the patch. Even off-brand bandages (not Band-Aid) stick better with LESS skin reactions. So you think a $200+ patch could figure out basic adhesion for a week. But no, apparently not. A great way to lose your medication and have no pain coverage for a week. Furthermore, it leaves scabs and scars. Nice skin was one of the few things chronic illness left me, now Butrans is destroying that too. There has to be a better way."

"I have chronic muscle and nerve pain, and in consultation with my pain doc, started Butrans patch 5 mg. I had no reduction in pain, so I upped the dosage to a 10 mg patch. Still no reduction in pain. Also, when I removed the 5 mg patch, I had blisters. For myself, I do not feel anything with this drug in my system. Not sure it's worth going to a higher dosage."

"I have been on these patches for 5 years now, starting at 5 mg. I am now on 20 mg patches and worry if it gets worse, what will happen. I cannot go without a patch for even 1 hour. My chemist makes me sign the controlled drug box, and I used to get 2 months at a time. Now they will only give me 1 month's worth, even though I have been prescribed 2 months. They will not hold the second month for me, so I have to get another prescription for the second month. Does anyone know how I can get this sorted out."

"I am one of those patients that never knew why the normal meds like Norco, Percocet, Tramadol never worked for me. After years of getting only 3 hours of relief, doctors would not listen to me telling them they're not working. After years of this, my rheumatologist referred me to a new pain management doctor, started off the same with these meds all over again. Finally, I was told there is pharmacogenetic testing to determine why I’m not responding to certain opioids, even testing for all classes such as blood pressure, cholesterol, psychological, etc. Weeks later, testing showed my enzymes will not respond to any of those meds, I’m CYP2D6, and there is a certain class of meds doctors have to give me. After all these years, now I know. So many of my meds changed, and I had to give a copy to all my doctors. First on my list was buprenorphine, which worked well until they began affecting my teeth. I just began Butrans 15 mg patches. I know it takes a couple of days to kick in, I’m patiently waiting. As of now, nothing."

"Was started on Bulbuca 450 mcg 6 months ago, it was the film patch for inside the mouth. First of all, it started decaying my teeth, so Dr. converted me over to the patch for the skin. I started out on 10 mcg, and it did not touch my pain, and I started withdrawing badly. Went back in after 2 weeks, and I was moved up to 15 mcg, and same results. Up to 20 mcg, and holy moly, I started feeling like I had the flu, couldn't get comfortable, was on the toilet 15-20 times a day. Then, the 3rd day after the new patch was on, things subsided. But now on the 5th day, not much pain control and sweating, and back on the toilet, with body aches. It doesn't last the 7 days like it says and took 3 days once moved up to 20 mcg, it barely gave me minimum pain relief. I have severe nerve damage in the sacral from preexisting surgery. This is not anything like Belbuca film or close to it. I do not recommend this Butrans patch at all. I am back to suffering. It's for low pain maybe, but otherwise, it's junk. Be aware."

"Have classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and the pain from existing in a body that isn't built correctly, along with 24 surgeries. I felt like the extended-release morphine I had been on (15 mg 3x/day) wasn't working as well as it had been. The switch from morphine to buprenorphine (patch, 10 mcg) was hellish, but luckily I had oxycodone to help with that. At about a week and a half, I started to feel great! I still had some GI issues (diarrhea, gas, bloating), but like others have said, I was in such a manageable amount of pain, I wanted to go do all sorts of things that I hadn't been able to do. Now, at a little over 3 weeks, I feel bloated & gassy, jittery/skin crawling, trouble sleeping, and still have diarrhea/soft stools. I'm hoping the side effects will diminish the longer I'm on it."

"For neuropathic pain (small fiber neuropathy). I have been using 5 microgram Butrans patches for two weeks now. Combined with pregabalin, it is helping me to alleviate the symptoms of small fiber neuropathy. Previously, I suffered from burning sensations in my feet and arms, as well as a sensation of heat all over my body. However, now I feel wonderful all day long."

"I was started on 5 mcg Butrans for chronic low back pain due to severe degenerative disc disease, L5 S1 bone-on-bone discs, bilateral pars defects, and spondylolisthesis. I wish I’d said no to this drug when it was offered to me after countless painful visits to the hospital for my uncontrolled back pain. What doctors don’t tell you is that it interferes with your thyroid function, which causes a whole other set of problems. Not only will you get severely addicted to this medication and have a hard time getting off of it, you’ll have issues with: mood, sleep, depression, anxiety, appetite, weight issues, feeling cold all the time, and worst of all, building a low tolerance for pain. I will NOT do my back surgery unless I’m off this horrible patch. I was at 7.5 mcg for a while, but I’m down to 5 mcg now, still very potent. Buprenorphine is 20-100 times as strong as morphine. I am trying to find a way to get off this evil medication with little to no help from my pain management doctor."

"I was on Tramadol for 4+ years, then not tapered and put on Nucynta for a week, and it wasn't great. So, the pain doctor put me on Butrans 5, and I'm not really sure if it is working. I feel kind of yucky, but is it because of the stopping of the two other medications so close together and no tapering? I have sneezing and a few other symptoms going into day 3 of the patch. I'm just not sure."

"I use a 7.5 mg Butrans patch, and it works pretty well. There are a few things I don't like: the tolerance build-up. I also don't like that they don't stick to your skin until they are wet. Then you have to tape them on."

"After 32 years living with fibromyalgia and exhausting medications, I was sent to pain management. Placed on the lowest dose and had immediate relief the first time in 32 years. I no longer take any medicines. My cocktail usually was one drug to counteract the side effects of another. Until finally, the scenario got really out of hand. Due to a rash that I've had since 2007, I was taken off at my next visit and put on Buccal. That was a nightmare with extreme sweating to the point of dehydration. I stopped and was put on 10 mcg Butrans. It started causing sweating and mid-back pain. Not sure if it's the Butrans or that it's the higher dose. Removed, and after 2 days had to go back on. Bottom line, if you have fibromyalgia, I highly recommend giving it a try. I'm waiting on my next visit to lower the dose and hopefully get rid of this sweating. Being out of pain and able to sleep and enjoy life again is worth everything. Wish I had known about this somewhere in those 32 years."
