For High Blood Pressure "I've been taking Atenolol 50 mg since 1996. I had no idea that I had stage 3 hypertension. Atenolol, from what I have been reading today, I have had side effects mentioned here: gout, water retention, chills, and feeling very dizzy, almost passing out. It took a month or so for it to all settle down. It's probably been two years total after I started on Atenolol for the gout pain to go away, seemingly. Keep your doctor and pharmacist in the loop about your reactions, good or bad. I haven't paid attention to my blood pressure other than taking my Atenolol. Oops. I was just at my dentist, and my blood pressure was insane: 217/118. Obviously, I'm going to have to toddle over to the emergency room. That rate is about where it was in the beginning. I gave the drug a high mark here. It has worked very well. I've nosed around, and there seems to be a pattern with Atenolol and men over 60 with HPB that appears to imply that Atenolol loses effectiveness. So boys, keep track of your numbers."

For High Blood Pressure "I'm 49, 6'2", 185 lbs. and have been on Atenolol for about 10 years. I have a bicuspid aortic valve, which has been stable over the years. The drug keeps my BP a consistent 112/70. This is the only drug I take for my condition. My cardiologist sold Atenolol to me as 'heart conditioner'. I am fairly active; I try to run a 5k every day (road or treadmill), lift weights several times a week, and mountain bike whenever I can get it in. I do experience some common side effects, such as occasional dizziness, 10 lbs. extra weight (in spite of my exercise) that I cannot lose, and insomnia. I never liked taking Atenolol, but I am starting to wonder about the long-term side effects."

For High Blood Pressure "I have used Atenolol for years, and it controls my blood pressure very well. One good side effect I found is it helps me not to be so shy in public situations, i.e., I can read out loud in public without my voice shaking. I also can now be very opinionated, which might be a bad side effect for my friends and family!"

For Supraventricular Tachycardia "Thought I lost my bottle of atenolol. I went 2 days without it, oh boy, didn't let me sleep at night, and my heart rate was so fast. Found it this morning, it's like a magic pill. All my symptoms went away, can't go without it for a day."

For Migraine Prevention "I suffered from migraines for years, no telling how much damage I’ve done to my kidneys and liver due to the amount of ibuprofen I took. Most of the time, the pain just subsided but never really went away. The atenolol has knocked out my migraines by 95%. I wish I would have known about this years ago! It truly is a godsend!"

For Anxiety "Let me start off by saying that I've done my research on Atenolol-it doesn't have the greatest track record, and there's a lot of evidence coming out saying that it doesn't actually protect your heart or arteries from damage. But Atenolol is the only thing that has worked to control my heart. I used to have high BP (160/100) and tachycardia at times, but as soon as I started taking Atenolol, it was like I was normal again. And I can definitely tell a difference when I stop taking it. I get a little shortness of breath very infrequently, and my pulse is sometimes under 60 bpm, but it's the one drug that has worked for years. I wish I could find something better/more effective, but I haven't yet. Tried Losartan, Valsartan, and a few others."

For High Blood Pressure "I have been on atenolol for about 3 1/2 months. I am only 23, so my blood pressure wasn't too, too high, but for my age, it was a concern to my doctor, so she had me start taking half of 25 mg every night. It did help for my blood pressure. It also helped me get to sleep at night, since I have a slight insomnia problem. But I do have a problem with depression also, and it seemed to make that a little worse. Since I started taking it, I also went from about 130 lbs to 146 lbs in those few months, and with dieting and exercise, I still have not been able to get that weight to go away, and it has also made me no longer have a sex drive."

For High Blood Pressure "I was born with high blood pressure and a slight arrhythmia. I've been taking atenolol since I was a kid, as soon as it was medically safe for a kid to be on a beta blocker, so I've been on it for about twenty years now. It works great for me. Might make me a bit drowsy, but I take it at bedtime for that reason. Docs tried to take me off of it once because they worried about an interaction with albuterol for my asthma. Worst mistake of my life, and I made them put me back on it. For those worried about the above interaction between atenolol and albuterol, I did some research using scholarly articles and medical journals. Atenolol is a selective beta inhibitor and doesn't affect the same betas that albuterol increases. They're okay together."

For Anxiety "Took atenolol for only a couple of weeks for anxiety, maybe 2 or 3 times a week. It definitely calmed me down, but after a couple of weeks, I noticed I was really depressed, especially when I took the atenolol. To the point where suicidal thoughts were swimming around in my head, and I felt hopeless 24/7. Turns out beta blockers like atenolol actually affect your brain too, and this can lead to depression. If you decide you want to take this drug for anxiety, it should only be used in emergency situations, this is a serious drug."

For High Blood Pressure "I'm a 46-year-old woman, 130 pounds and 5.5. I exercise regularly. No other health issues. I was put on 25 mg atenolol 8 years ago. Before then, I tried multiple BP medications, which all made me feel bad. Atenolol has been the answer for me! The only side effect is that I also got rid of my crippling migraines! Vomiting, calling sick. No more!!! My BP is perfect and I have no more migraines, just occasional regular headaches like a normal person. It makes me drowsy, so I take it at bedtime."

For Supraventricular Tachycardia "I have been taking atenolol for over 28 years. I started out on 25 mg daily and have increased to 50 mg twice daily over the past few years. I take it for SVT, and it helps tremendously with no side effects."

For Supraventricular Tachycardia "I have been taking atenolol for about a year now (for SVT) and am very sensitive to medicines (as is 10% of the population). I was prescribed 25 mg once a day, and it made me feel really dizzy and almost a bit tipsy. I also had pain in my toes (probably a lack of circulation from a slower heart rate). Even a 12.5 mg dose made me feel that way, so I have found that 1/4 of a tablet, 6.25 mg once a day, works well for me (the tablets aren’t time release or coated, so they can be cut, even though it’s a bit hard to get precise even cuts. Doctors won’t tell you this, and mine was a bit perturbed that I lowered my dose, but I know my own body better than they do and prefer to take the lowest dose that works best for me...less side effects that way too). If I miss more than a day, I notice my tachycardia coming back. This medication controls that well. The only downside is that it seems to make me tired and gives me brain fog-I am very forgetful on this medicine. This medication is also very affordable."

Atenolol for High Blood Pressure "Was on this for about 6 years. Was dieting and exercising and lost about 57 lbs. My pulse rate dropped to about 48-60, had all kinds of heart tests, scary. Did not find any issues for the heart, thankfully, but the atenolol was taking my pulse down too low. Switched to Lisinopril just today, pulse is already in the normal range."

For Migraine Prevention "I was having migraines on average 5 days a week with just about everything from atmospheric pressure, sound, light, and foods as triggers. Had an MRI without any real findings other than white spots on the brain. My doctor prescribed me atenolol, and the results have been amazing. While I still have the occasional migraine, the frequency and severity have been greatly decreased without any side effects (so far)."

For Migraine Prevention "I was doing some research on migraines, was having 4 or 6 migraines a week, had to beg my doctor to put me on this. He finally agreed. Been on it for 2 months, not a single headache nor migraine. I have had migraines since I was 10. I am now 33. I know it is commonly used for high blood pressure and the reason my doctor was kind of leery of it is because I didn't have high blood pressure, but I'm glad he let me try it. It's on the Walmart $4 plan."

For High Blood Pressure "Had taken this for 60 days. Now I am experiencing severe head/forehead pain. I can't take the pain anymore. When I realized that this is causing head pain, I had to stop taking. Now it's okay. Also, these tabs will decrease your sex drive. If you are married and still young, please think twice before taking this. My BP is fine and heart rate is normal now."

For Supraventricular Tachycardia "My cardiologist prescribed one-half of the 25 mg atenolol pill for premature ventricular complexes, which started occurring post-ablation for SVT (supraventricular tachycardia). I find this medication to be very effective in keeping me calm, and my blood pressure nice and low. It has no negative side effects. I feel the extra benefit of this med is the calm I experience. It is so nice to not react rashly in certain situations. Yeah for atenolol!!!"

For High Blood Pressure "My cousin took atenolol 50 mg, the first week still working well. However, on the second week, started to have sudden mild shortness of breath, which lasts for 5-10 minutes, and my BP can be as low as 98/65. Reduced the dose to 25 mg, however, the sudden mild SOB still exists. Reduced it to 12.5 mg, on monitoring status... Reduce the dose slowly if having such side effects, with consultation with your doctor."

For Ventricular Tachycardia "I take atenolol to treat tachycardia caused by dysautonomia. Like some others with my condition, there are many beta-blockers I cannot tolerate. I also have asthma (potentially caused by dysautonomia), which is a concern when taking beta blockers. Atenolol is cardioselective and less likely to affect respiratory function. In my case, this has been true. It is the only beta blocker I have been able to use without having horrible, debilitating, and/or life-threatening side effects. It has brought my resting HR down from 120-130 to 80-90. Now my HR only goes above 120 with strenuous exercise or infections. Side effects: cold extremities, slight worsening of asthma symptoms, insomnia if taken within 6 hours of bedtime."

For Mitral Valve Prolapse "At 27 years old, I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, hypertension, and fast heartbeat. My fabulous doctor, who was the head of the hypertension department, started me on 50 mg Tenormin daily for the first month and then increased it to 100 mg daily (which is now called atenolol, generic). I'm now 62 years old and have successfully been taking the same medication and dosage for all these years!!!"

For High Blood Pressure "I have been taking Atenolol 25 mg for about 5 years or more. I have a family history of high blood pressure. It has been working fine for me all these years, it has lowered my BP. The last few months or so, my anxiety has been crazy, I’m dizzy, nauseous, loss of appetite, I just feel horrible. It’s weird, though, I will wake up feeling good, and maybe the whole day I will be fine. Then, some days I wake up feeling good, and then out of nowhere, I will feel sick, nauseous and dizzy, and tingly all over out of nowhere. I feel so bad, all I want to do is lay down, then it causes my anxiety to kick in. I am so frustrated, I am tired of not feeling sick so often. The doctors say it’s vertigo… It’s not vertigo!! I’m so tired of feeling sick all the time."

For High Blood Pressure "Been taking atenolol many years. I have an extremely difficult time keeping my weight down, bad metabolism. I needed to increase the amount to 50 mg to get a good blood pressure of 120/70. So now will probably gain weight. Will change the extra 25 mg atenolol to something else soon. Wish I knew exactly what would work for the extra. I am writing this after reading all the helpful comments here."

For High Blood Pressure "I was 27 and overweight when I started taking 25 mg of atenolol, which worked great for about 6 years, but last year at age 34, the doctor put me on 50 mg, which started causing anxiety about once every 2-3 months and lack of sleep. Now, at age 35, I'm on 75 mg, and the side effects are weekly migraines, lightheadedness, anxiety, leg pain, and jaw pain... don't feel like myself..."

For Ventricular Tachycardia "I am a 27-year-old female. I was put on Atenolol after years of doctor's visits, including everyone trying to tell me I had anxiety. That was not the case, I was finally diagnosed with Atrial Ventricular Reentry Tachycardia and immediately put on Atenolol. They tried an ablation, but it was unsuccessful. I have now been on Atenolol for 5 years, and I have had chronic fatigue since I began these medications, and I feel like my symptoms are worsening. I have tightness in my chest often, difficulty getting a deep breath, and the lethargy is off the charts, my sex drive sucks, and I feel 'blah' more often than not. I also love to work out, but I feel like I always have a gorilla on my back. It's all extremely frustrating. I am dying to wean off of this medicine, and I really wish the doctors would have educated me more about the side effects because I think the diagnosis would have seemed more bearable than this."
