"I've only been taking this for a month. I got 25 mg of amitriptyline at night. I have anxiety attacks, and sometimes I shake, this hasn't been helping at all with that. I also have insomnia, which is the only thing it's helped for. I actually sleep, but it gives me dry mouth, and once I woke up and everything was spinning for the whole day."

"Took 10 mg for the first time last night for insomnia. To my great surprise, today it seemed to help with both muscle achiness and with anxiety. I slept all day (and needed it), but I suspect that won't be a big issue once I take this medication more regularly (which was the case when I was on mirtazapine/Remeron)."

"I'm on amitriptyline for a few different conditions combined, primarily for anxiety and depression, but it also helps with migraines and chronic pain, all of which I have. The reviews that say it takes a while to work, i.e., a few weeks to a month, kept me hopeful, and I have taken it religiously around the same time every night. My anxiety has definitely improved, I feel like this must be what normal people feel like on a day-to-day basis. I used to suffer from tightening in the chest/chest pain almost constantly, racing thoughts, and a lot of other unpleasant anxiety symptoms, and now I notice a HUGE difference, especially in that tight/painful chest feeling from my anxiety, it's just gone. I also no longer have any thoughts about ending things, which I was feeling previously. My pain has improved as well. The only side effect I am not very fond of is the drowsiness, but I am willing to deal with it for the huge reduction in anxiety I feel."

"I have to say this is the only antidepressant that has so far worked for me. I'm on 25 mg for sleep and stress. I take it at night. It took a few days to help with sleep, but now I've been sleeping great, and a few side effects-nothing major. I can't take Lexapro, and this is another class of antidepressants. Believe me, if I can take it, anyone can. It's the only one I haven't stopped. It hasn't been 6 weeks yet to get full benefits, but my tension headaches I woke up to every morning are gone. Give it a go and don't look back ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️"

"I started 10 mg of this 5 weeks ago before bed. I have noticed an improvement in talking about stressful subjects and giving me more motivation to do my hobbies, and I am loving living again. Amazing drug."

"After one of the worst years of my life, I developed anxiety, was prescribed Endep 25 mg, progressed to 50 mg, then 100 mg. Side effects were full on and included, but were not limited to dizziness, short-term memory loss, blackouts (momentary but scary), nightmares, indigestion, incredible tiredness (cloudy head, fuzziness), dry mouth, and one of the deepest, most horrible depressive states I have ever been in, which included suicidal thoughts, but hey, I didn't have anxiety! THIS IS A WARNING: if you develop suicidal thoughts while taking this drug, see a doctor immediately!"

"I was prescribed amitriptyline 10 mg/day for anxiety. Previous SSRIs had left me with constant shakes and sleep deprivation. Amitriptyline did help with my neck pain, and my sleep pattern returned to normal, which was great. Unfortunately, even at the lowest dose of 10 mg, I was unable to function. I felt like a zombie, and my coordination was shot to pieces, and I was breathless doing the smallest of physical activities. I cut to 5 mg because the pain relief for my neck was such a boon, but the negative side effects were still too great to continue a normal life. Shaking, woolly-headed, forgetful, and still an underlying anxiety that erupted over the smallest of issues. Useless for my anxiety because of my sensitivity to the drug, but great for pain relief. I tried it for 4 weeks before being switched to a beta blocker."

"I just started this medication again since my panic attacks and anxiety have gotten so worse! This medication is a lifesaver! I had 0 side effects, just a dry mouth in the morning, but that’s it - I highly recommend you take amitriptyline. I’ve tried other medications like Lexapro, and it made me really sick and suicidal. Never again will I go back to those other antidepressants."

"I found this really helpful for anxiety, depression, and ADHD. I tried other types, like citalopram, but found this was the only one suitable for me, as I have IBS too, and most would really make it flare up. I sleep well and am in a more positive mood throughout the day without feeling 'out of it.' I can function really well for work and any other activities."

"Amitriptyline has helped me far better than any other drug for stress, anxiety, and insomnia. My anxiety led to insomnia, and those two led to seizures. In a way, I guess you could say it's helped with those too. I don't have them if I can sleep."

"I have been on this drug for more than 30 years. I feel that it helps with my depression, but there are many side effects that I do NOT like. My mouth is always dry, and my tongue is always moving. Many family pictures have my tongue sticking out."

"Switched to 25 mg amitriptyline from 60 mg of Cymbalta. Was told to overlap for one week and have now taken the amitrip for exactly one week. Initially thought the deep sleep from it was amazing. Couldn't remember the last time I had slept that deeply and had such vivid dreams that I could (too clearly) remember. I kind of liked the 'emotional numbness' I got from it. However, the next day I would be so exhausted and out of it. At times, I had to remind myself where I was and often struggled to find the words to form a complete sentence. I ate like I had the munchies (like I had just smoked weed). I also became quite paranoid that most people were out to get me. I definitely am stopping this drug as of tonight after becoming more teary-emotional, angry, and overwhelmed than I could tolerate. The Cymbalta is now looking very appealing."

"I've been prescribed this for my anxiety and stress, but I've been too scared to take it as my blood pressure goes up and down. I also have heart palpitations, especially at night and first thing in the morning. Do I have anything to worry about if I start taking it? My doctor has prescribed 5 mg for two weeks, then go back and see him to see if I need to go up to 10 mg. I have OCD when it comes to new medication and worry about the side effects. Am I being over-sensitive? I want to get off Valium, and my doctor said this will do much better than Valium. I'm sorry, I'm just a worrier when it comes to new medication."

"I have been on this medication for a long time, very low dose helps with anxiety. One important thing I have noticed over the years is that this drug differs depending on the manufacturer. I wish I could remember which brands I had trouble with. The one that has always worked great for me is Sandoz. Some of the others, after being on them for about a week, gave me the feeling that I abruptly stopped taking the drug... terrible anxiety. I have to request the Sandoz with every refill."

"So back in 2020, a traumatic issue triggered severe anxiety to the point that I was in bed 24/7 vomiting and diarrhea. It was horrific. Long story short, I started amitriptyline. After a few weeks, my stomach was better - no diarrhea, no weird anxious consumption, just me - but with a bit more zest for life. I was fast walking, singing, back to work. It was amazing. I was on it for a year when I started getting episodes of rapid heartbeat and blurry vision. My doctor recommended that I come off it, and I did, as I felt I was ready. Fast forward 2 years, and I'm starting to get symptoms back, and anxiety is creeping in. I wish I could go back on this, as it absolutely changed my life for the better, but the side effects after one year on were not good."

"Prescribed to help with sleep, this drug has made a significant difference in one week of taking it. The surprise was the benefit to my mood. Mind is clear, and anxiety has abated. Sleeping very well, especially after I chose the higher suggested dose of 20 mg. I take it at night. No side effects after the first few days. Early days, but very encouraged."

"This drug helps me so much. I have tinnitus and crazy stress with anxiety. It calms me down and really doesn't have the awful side effects I get from SSRIs. I was actually allergic to Zoloft, and it made everything worse, even after two weeks. But ten days on this drug, and I'm beginning to see subtle improvement, and I haven't had a panic attack since I started. I take propranolol and Klonopin still, but I think the need for those will diminish soon. I used to take this same drug a few years back, and it helped me so much, hoping for the same results. Started on 50 mg and hopefully that's where I can stay, but I'm not scared if I need to up my dose, unlike Zoloft, which scared me every time I'd up the dose, along with the scary side effects. No real side effects from this, at least none that are noticeable or annoying."

"Have previously been on this medication 6 years ago. In between, have been on SSRIs and venlafaxine (the latter being a nightmare to withdraw from). Now, after a year of medication-free, I'm back on amitriptyline at my request due to mega anxiety and stress issues (not my doctor's first choice), also currently taking Ramipril and diltiazem for high blood pressure - so far early days and am suffering the main side effect of tiredness but managed a 2.5-mile jog last night. It's early days, and I am hoping this will work as well as it did in the past."

"This whole year my body was stressed. I was sick for months, and no one could figure out why. Then, after months of my period being worse, they found my iron was extremely low and a uterine fibroid, which had to be removed because it was causing huge clots. So, three months after surgery, I felt a little better, but not 100%. Then my pulmonary doctors believed my vagus nerve was damaged. I had severe insomnia and body shakes and jolts at night. He prescribed me amitriptyline 10 to start. He warned me to give it a full month to work. The first few doses felt groggy and out of it, but I finally got sleep that I haven’t had all year. A week or two later, a huge change in my anxiety and depression, especially my IBS-C. It made me feel human again. So, he bumped me to 25 mg, but I ended up going back to 10 mg because at 25 mg, after a week, I still felt groggy. But I am forever grateful for this drug. Everyone can’t believe the 180 I did. I can go out and actually be normal again."

"This medication works quickly and sufficiently for me. I take one 50 mg tablet at bedtime, and it allows for better sleep, less waking up. Amitriptyline also helps calm my nerves during the day, it's long-acting relief with very little drowsy aspect. Taken at night, by morning I have slept better and wake more mellow and good to go during the day."

"I took this medicine for anxiety and panic attacks. After suffering for several months trying all sorts of medication. It was this old-school medicine that gave me hope that I can actually recover. It improves my general health condition. But I found it difficult to wake up from sleep while I was still on this medication. It really helps but did not address the symptoms permanently."

"I have bipolar I, generalized anxiety disorder, and a back injury. Lots of these reviews don't state dosage or frequency, which is not helpful as a doctor can prescribe anywhere from 10 mg a day to 150 mg a day. I started on 10 mg a day for back injury nerve pain, and I found it made me irrationally irritable and lash-out angry after about 5 days of use. With my GP's permission, I halved the tablet to 5 mg once at night, and found that the side effects disappeared immediately. After 10 days on 5 mg a night, I increased it to 10 mg a night, and the irritability did not return. I've been on the 10 mg dose for over a year now, without a return in the irritability. If I forget to take it for a few days, or forget to get my script done over a holiday season, I drop back to the 5 mg for a few days before going back up to the 10 mg."

"I have tried 3 different anxiety meds, and all have had really bad side effects, so now I'm on amitriptyline 10 mg to start off with. I have anxiety so bad I can't eat, and the attacks are awful nearly all day, and now I have insomnia due to the tablets they gave me. I hope amitriptyline works because I am losing faith and feel I'm going to stay this way forever. I have to slowly up my dose week by week, I've only just started them, but I still couldn't sleep last night. Will I get better?"

"This is the worst. I took 25 mg last night, and it has ruined my day. I can't move around. My arms feel heavy, and I have had to lie down 5 times today. Why is my doctor prescribing this medicine to me for situational anxiety?"

"I have been on amitriptyline for 15 years. It has really helped me, except at age 73, I feel it's causing extreme dry eye. I dread having to come off it, as I feel well on it. I am also on Seroxat for 15 years. Has anybody else experienced dry eye with those drugs? Amitriptyline 25 mgs I take at night, and Seroxat 20 mgs in the morning. Would love to know. Thanks."
