For Insomnia "I was in a four-wheeler crash in 2017. Lot of tissue and nerve damage on my left side. Nothing major, but the pain was minor enough. I just could never get comfortable and would wake up 20+ times throughout the night and was never getting a good sleep. Asked my doctor about it last October, and he put me on a dose of 25 mg of amitriptyline to help calm my nerves. It took a couple of months, but now when I lay down, I get comfy easily and I fall asleep within 30 minutes of laying down. I sleep all through the night and don't wake up until my alarm goes off. Lately, I've been waking up at 8 before my alarm goes off. Best sleep I've had in a decade."

For Anxiety and Stress "I was having the most horrible panic attacks and pretty constant anxiety where, if it had continued, I really don't want to contemplate what I would have done to stop it all. After taking amitriptyline 50mg for 7 days, it all stopped dead! Thank you, Amitriptyline! I have my life back and now feel normal again. I highly recommend it!"

Amitriptyline for Depression "I have been taking Endep for well over 12 years without any side effects whatsoever. It has helped me greatly. My maintenance dose is 100mg. It also helps my pain, as well as being able to get about 6 hours of sleep at night. I am an elderly person, but Endep has contributed to giving me a better quality of life."

For Anxiety and Stress "This is an amazing medication. I have been on amitriptyline for 15 years. It is one of the best things happening in my life. Can’t imagine my life without it. It changed my life and also so many other people in my family and my friends. Initially, I had a very bad shoulder injury due to work when I was 40 years old, and my doctor said I had to change jobs. A 40-year-old woman without any other skills and a bad shoulder injury, no way I can find another job. I have a little kid and old parents I need to look after and a home loan to pay. I was so stressed. Lucky, my doctor is very experienced. It not just helps me with my muscles, but also makes me sleep so much better, much less stress. Focusing and concentrating. The most important thing is to start from 5 mg (the lowest dose is 10 mg, but start from half). Increase 5 mg every week if necessary."

For Migraine Prevention "I don't like taking medication, but my headaches were now in a state of chronic tension/migraine being triggered by anything excessive like exercising, too much cleaning, too much activity, too much light or stress. I was prescribed Elavil for headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep trouble, back, neck, and arm pain. I've taken it for a week, and after one dose, the first thing I noticed was an awesome night's sleep, and no neck or jaw pain, pain on rising. I feel completely relaxed in the morning, a little drowsy but am able to function and get my three kids to school. I have been taking it at 10 p.m. and feel tired until noon, so I think I'm going to take it earlier in the evening. I haven't noticed any side effects at all. I am taking 10 mg."

For Pain "I was prescribed this medication for insomnia and depression. I suffer from lupus, Hashimoto's disease, fibromyalgia, CFS, and C-PTSD. I've been on it for about four weeks. I've noticed a significant drop in pain on many days than not. I sleep a solid eight to nine hours a night. I've noticed that I'm calmer, but I'm on a very low dose of 10mg, but will request an increase. I also hope to drop my narcotic pain medication intake to zero if this continues to work as well as it has. Getting sleep is a major issue and one that cannot be undermined when considering the elements that contribute to chronic illness of any kind. This is amazing. Dry mouth and nighttime vertigo during the first few weeks of use."

For Insomnia "Been taking this for about 10 months now, primarily for sleeping issues. But it's also been good for my hay fever as it has antihistamine actions. I take 25mg at night and can feel it kick in about 45 minutes after ingestion. I feel a bit drowsy and my limbs get a bit heavier. Then I get in bed and fall asleep easily. The only issue I have is if I try to stop this drug, I just don't sleep at all. Maybe I'm dependent on it, but that's okay as long as it works. It's better than looking at the ceiling all night."

For Neuropathic Pain "Amitriptyline is a great medication. After over 10 years of taking strong painkillers as and when for neuropathic pain, I went to doctors and said enough is enough. I want something else. I was prescribed this drug and it's amazing. One pill a day and I feel normal. I'm absolutely over the moon. However... There is usually a 'however'... The dreaded weight gain. I've put on around 3 stone in around 4 months and no longer fit into my clothes. I walk 10,000 steps Monday to Friday and then walk for 3 hours Saturday and Sunday, and the weight will not shift (again like other people, it's the stomach where the weight has accumulated). I'm now at a loss as I am so happy that I can do things without discomfort. However, it comes at a price. I've only been on the tablets for 4 months and I'm worried that I'll keep on gaining weight. So I'm telling myself that I'll have to come to a decision at the 6-month mark. Anyway, hope this review helps anybody as this site has really helped me."

For Interstitial Cystitis "I have had IC and Vulvodynia for around a year and a half. My symptoms include painful intercourse, pelvic pain, burning urethra. I tried Elmiron, and it made my symptoms 10 times worse, so I stopped within three weeks of my start date. I recently was prescribed Amitriptyline 25mg, and I have been on it for a month. I take it at night around 9 PM and find that it makes me drowsy. It also keeps me in a deep sleep (which I love). In the morning, it is a little harder to wake up, but once I am up, I am fully functional and not tired. During the first two weeks, I didn't experience any relief, but by the third week, my symptoms disappeared. I am in shock that something actually worked being that I have tried almost EVERYTHING. I now can drink an 8-ounce cup of coffee a day and not feel any burning or pain when I urinate. If you have been suffering for some time with IC/Vulvodynia, I highly suggest trying this medication."

For Anxiety and Stress "I started taking amitriptyline this year (2013) after having a medicine cabinet looking like a pharmaceutical company. I must say this is the only one that helps me. I have severe anxiety and panic attacks along with constant worry and stress that had me on rock bottom. I take 25mg, which is fine. It does make you sleepy, but it's so worth it. I'm 27, no kids, just coping with life."

Amitriptyline for Insomnia "I'm 65 years old so when the benzo stops being effective, I used Amitriptyline (Elavil) to sleep. I have to take 3 X 10mg with half of a banana to make it smoother on an empty stomach to make it work. It has some nasty side effects, but they tend to go away after a while. Constipation will not be a problem anymore after a month, drink a lot of water early in the evening to prevent constipation. Dry mouth will always be there, but will become less severe after a while, so chew some gum to fix this problem. Sex will also take a low profile :-) This drug can also be used to make the withdrawal of the benzos much easier to do. You will still sleep and will only need a small dosage of benzo, which you can lower slowly but surely. I get a better sleep pattern than with the benzos. Waking up ready to drive my car if I need to, unlike with Ambien. Cheap to buy also. My old mother still uses it after almost 50 years of usage. She is 85."

For Pain "I can't believe that after 3 years of severe widespread neuropathic pain of unknown origin, I am sleeping 8-10 hours and have had total pain reduction from about an 8 at worst to now a 1.5. I've only been on 10 mg at night for 3 days. I hope it's not coincidence or placebo effect. A bit drowsy and had a dizzy spell today. But completely worth it. I'm falling asleep faster now. My mood seems to be more calm as well. I hope to get off of oxycodone now."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have IBS for 16 years. Too much pain, bloating, and discomfort. Tried many medicines. But amitriptyline is the best among them with almost no side effects for me. I had a severe IBS episode and was in so much trouble. My doctor advised me amitriptyline 25mg at bedtime and an unbelievable wonder happened in 2 weeks. All the symptoms reduced, and I felt much better. For acute attacks, I take librax with it. Amitriptyline is really a miracle drug. If you have IBS, give this medicine a chance. I am sure it will work for you, and you will lead a normal life like me."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have suffered from IBS-D related to anxiety since I was 21 (now 26). I self-diagnosed and attempted to self-treat, but nothing worked. I'm not someone who likes to take daily medication - I have ADHD and I rarely take my Adderall. I originally went to the doc for headaches - I was having 15-20 headache days a month. My doc prescribed me Amitriptyline for 3 months. I was skeptical at first because I do not like taking daily medication. I thought about it for a couple of days and decided to try it. It has changed my life. I have had 9 headaches since taking it (I'm now starting my next 3-month round of it). My sleep has vastly improved, and I started to notice in the first few weeks I was having regular bowel movements. I have never had 'regular bowel movements' in my life. My anxiety level has drastically decreased, and my IBS has basically disappeared. I highly recommend this medication for headaches, anxiety, IBS, sleep difficulties, etc."

For Insomnia "I have taken this medication during certain times in my life due to events and change of time zones for long periods of time when my sleep pattern is broken. It is great. I have been able to stay at 25 mg without increase for more than a year and work myself off when fully recovered. Be prepared to wait for it to kick in up to 2 weeks after starting it. It needs to fully get into your system. Everyone's body is different. Recently I tried zolpidem for a more immediate sleep and found I could only get 4 hours a night. I read about the addiction of it and possible rebound insomnia after weaning yourself off. I am going back to that old model medicine, Amitriptyline. It is great and I get back to a 7-8 hour sleep pattern."

For Anxiety and Stress "I was skeptical about using Amitriptyline after I read about it online, but I later found out I didn’t really read about it properly after my doctor prescribed it for treating my tension headaches and anxiety. I must say the drug has been amazing even at low doses of 10mg or less, but it makes me feel so sleepy even after I wake up for work. If I let it take its course for a long sleep, I feel great, and my tension headaches are gone just after a week of taking it."

Amitriptyline for Anxiety and Stress "I'm bipolar. I've been on various medicines for almost 10 years. Well, my Dad died a few months ago. The depression and anxiety were so bad I could not function. My doctor prescribed this, along with my 40mg of Celexa. It took about a month to 6 weeks before I felt any better. But I also have chronic pain from spinal arthritis. This medication has helped me get my life back! But in the process, I've gained 20 lbs in 8 weeks, and I was already overweight. It's helped with my chronic pain and with the depression. I love how I feel on this but not the weight gain."

Amitriptyline for Insomnia "I've had insomnia in almost every way you can have it, so I've tried the whole raft of sedatives and hypnotics. Only three have worked: diphenhydramine (Benadryl), doxepin/Silenor, and this. Just the fact that it keeps me asleep is such a godsend that I can't give it a bad review, but ... Of the three drugs that work, this is the worst. It has more neurological side effects, it puts me in a lousy mood that lasts most of the next day (not terrible, but maybe 25% grumpier than usual), and it leads to weight gain even at the lowest dose (10mg). If my hormones are out of whack (high cortisol), amitriptyline doesn't make me groggy, but if they're in line it really does, leaving me wool-headed until the middle of the afternoon. It also has negative interactions with a bunch of other drugs, so be careful to check it against your other prescriptions/recreational drugs."

For Fibromyalgia "I believe fibromyalgia symptoms started when I was around 14. It wasn't diagnosed until I was 41. I had been to many doctors complaining of lethargy and body pain/aches, and I never had any answers. One doctor said, 'Do you think this might be all in your head?' My life changed at 41 when I started on amitriptyline. I finally went into a deep sleep, felt more refreshed, and it substantially reduced the pain. I am currently 55. The original dose lost its efficacy over time. I am now on 125 mg, but I am very active and run and bicycle weekly. Don't get scared if you feel even more tired in the first 2 to 3 weeks of taking the medication, that will dissipate and you will feel refreshed all day."

For Migraine Prevention "Amitriptyline is my miracle medicine. After trying so many migraine prevention medicines and other miscellaneous things (ear piercings, stretches, pressure point therapy, etc.) with little to no effect, I was beyond frustrated. With this medication, 90% of all my tension headaches and migraines are gone. When I had to stop taking it for 3 months, they came back. Once I started amitriptyline again, within days they were basically gone. It has changed my life in a tremendously positive way!"

For Depression "This drug has changed my life. I wish it hadn't taken going through 7-8 medications and 2 years of feeling like a test subject, but I finally found the one! Doctors tend to use SSRIs for the first line of defense against anxiety and depression (also insomnia). I tried Lexapro, Hydroxyzine, Celexa, Zoloft, Effexor, Wellbutrin, Zoloft (again), and a variety of over-the-counter supplements. I also did yoga, CrossFit, all the natural cures to mental instability. The SSRIs helped significantly but resulted in bad side effects such as sexual, feeling like a robot, and wearing off over time. After a few meltdowns, 3 doctors, and 2 years, I tried amitriptyline (a tricyclic antidepressant). Now, I feel fantastic - happy, sleeping well, anxiety-free."

For Anxiety and Stress "I struggled horribly with severe anxiety for years. I tried all kinds of natural remedies and doctor-prescribed medicines, but nothing worked long term. Then two years ago, I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and was prescribed amitriptyline for pain. What I got was amazing relief from my anxiety and stress. Now I know what people mean when they say 'I got my life back'. I take 5mg before bed. I sleep great and have a little trouble waking up because I sleep so well, but once I'm up, I'm fine. No drowsiness and no more anxiety."

For Insomnia "Been on and off various antipsychotics and OTC sleep aids for the past 20 years. In one single night, it has pretty much cured my insomnia. I got up feeling great, no hangovers, like, what the hell? It was so bizarre. I now feel absolutely fantastic and am able to sleep and wake up like a normal person. Why was I not given this as an option sooner? Everything else is completely trash compared to this. I have only been taking 10mg, and for the past 8 weeks, I have never felt better. I feel like on a permanent very low-level manageable hypomania - if that makes sense. I feel like a human again thanks to this ancient medicine. Anxiety, stress, and depression have significantly dropped, it's the gift that keeps on giving. So what's the catch? I get pretty bad dry mouth, but I see that as almost nonexistent compared to everything else the other medications have given me. I'd give this a 20 out of 10 if I could. It's out of this world, and I'm extremely pleased with how it's working out so far."
