What is Vayarin?
There are many brands and forms of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids available. Not all brands are listed on this leaflet.
Vayarin are used together with diet and exercise to help lower triglyceride levels in the blood.
It is not known if Vayarin will prevent a heart attack or stroke. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors.
Vayarin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Vayarin if you are allergic to Vayarin or soybeans.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
an allergy to fish or shellfish;
a heart rhythm disorder;
a pancreas disorder; or
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Vayarin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
How should I take Vayarin?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it.
Take with food.
While using Vayarin, you may need frequent blood tests.
You may need to follow a special diet while using Vayarin. Follow all instructions of your doctor or dietitian. Learn about the foods to eat or avoid to help control your condition.
If you need surgery, tell your surgeon you currently use this medicine. You may need to stop for a short time.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid while taking Vayarin?
Avoid eating foods high in fat or cholesterol, or Vayarin will not be as effective.
Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase triglycerides and may make your condition worse.
Vayarin side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
chest pain; or
Common side effects may include:
loss of appetite;
back pain; or
dry mouth, altered sense of taste.
