"This medication, topiramate, was torture for the entire 7-9 days I was on it (for pseudotumor cerebri), at the lowest dose (25 mg daily, taken at night). Experienced a rash on day 1, with several red spots all over my face, chest, and arms, complete with incredible itching; severe insomnia, wasn't able to sleep more than 2 hours/day; crazy agitation/nervousness; racing thoughts; uncontrollable eye movements, especially when closing them to try to sleep; worsening of my already existing dizziness, nausea, and vomiting; more fainting than usual; complete loss of appetite; anger mood swings; memory loss. Also experienced a number of vision disturbances, like cloudy vision, blurrier than usual, loss of color saturation or seeing everything tinted in a single color, seeing flashes of light/lightning bolts, severe eye pain, intolerance to light, worsening of balance, tremors. Did absolutely nothing to help the horrible pressure headaches associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri)."

For Migraine Prevention "I was put on 25 mg twice daily of topiramate. I had horrendous side effects. I managed to take this drug for 2 weeks, however, after the first week, I had to decrease my dose to 25 mg a day as I hadn't slept properly for nearly 4 days. I completely lost my appetite. I had terrible mood swings and irritability. I found it extremely difficult to concentrate and struggled to remember things. My doctors told me to persevere with this drug as I wasn't getting migraines with the 50 mg dose but couldn't tolerate the side effects. After being on 25 mg for a few days, I woke up one morning and nearly collapsed and felt very unsteady on my feet. I went to see my doctor, and they took me straight off it due to a bad reaction."

For Seizure Prevention "The neurologist prescribed this for me one week ago at 25 mg twice a day. I've been extremely dizzy before and after taking this, so not sure I can include that as a side effect, but the rest... well, I could not stop crying, had extreme thirst, 'pins and needles' feeling in my hands, feet, and lips, and was confused. I guess the plus side of this medicine is that it works right away. I've stopped taking it today on the advice of my doctor and am starting to feel better. I hope this helps someone out there. Good luck, everyone!"

For Migraine Prevention "I was given this medicine in Dec 2012 and got up to 100 mg and had to stop taking it. I was angry all the time, couldn't think, tingly feet and hands most I could live with, but the anger I could not. My 19-year-old daughter also went on it for migraines and has almost none now, has no side effects, and lost 42 pounds in the first 3 months. Once she was at the perfect weight, she stopped losing, so I decided to do some research and maybe try again, so I started this time on 50 mg a day, but I take 25 mg in the morning and 25 mg in the evening. So far, mild side effects, a little tired, a little off balance, but not bad and loss of appetite. That's good, I had about 50 lbs to lose. I started last Wednesday and I have lost 7 pounds in 3 days. I have to make myself eat."

For Seizure Prevention "So I don't just use this for seizure prevention, I use it for migraines as well. I'm only giving it a 7 out of 10 because, while it has stopped me from seizing so often, I'm still twitching uncontrollably at times (which aren't seizures, they're twitches), and I'm still having my cluster headaches, which leave me with vertigo attacks once the migraines pass. As you can guess, when that happens, I have to stop whatever I'm doing entirely and just go home. My days are still 100% dictated by my head injury that's frankly unpredictable. No miracle drug, and I never expected it to be. I'm still going to take topiramate. I need to if I don't want to end up unconscious in public again. But I don't know if it's the medicine or the doctors who refuse to take me seriously. It doesn't help enough. I'm still tethered to both this and 4 to 6 tablets of 200 mg of Advil on a daily basis to keep pain at bay."

For Migraine Prevention "The first month was great, started on 25 mg and upped to 100 mg within 4 weeks. Totally migraine-free except when I came to my period. Then I started to have a visual aura, which I never previously experienced, and had a 3-day intense migraine. My usual vertigo and severe travel sickness completely disappeared. After that, I stayed headache-free mostly for a couple of months, apart from my time of month and ovulation. I continue to get the visual auras almost daily. They're not painful, so don't bother me. Last month, the headaches came back almost daily with the auras. My doctor increased the dose, going to 200 mg, and headaches are gone already. I'm hoping this will also help with back pain from disk degeneration. Lost 33 lbs."

For Migraine Prevention "I started taking topiramate to control severe headaches, but after a few days, the side effects are worse than the headaches: nausea, rapid heartbeat, weakness, ringing in ears (it's REALLY loud!), lightheadedness, dizziness that makes me unsteady standing. I'm so glad topiramate works for others."

For Migraine Prevention "A MUST READ. If you are thinking of taking Topiramate ER, I would NOT recommend it to anyone. In my personal experience, I started taking it on a Thursday, took the second one on Friday, and on Saturday night when getting up, I experienced severe dizziness, felt like I had to throw up, as well as could not even open my eyes because the room was spinning. Worst feeling I have ever had in my life. When I awoke this AM (Sunday), I still felt dizzy when I simply sat up from bed and still was experiencing mild dizziness and did not feel well. Trust me and DO NOT take this medication."
