"I have frequent urinary tract infections, and I've taken this many times but hadn't in five or so years because my urinary tract infection became resistant to it. Now, since I'm taking it again, it's given me the jitters and acid reflux, but those are still better than cystitis."

"I have had these urinary tract infections, and the only thing that works quickly is the Bactrim DS. It works in a matter of days. Side effects are different for everyone, but as mild as mine have been, I would choose this over any other antibiotic. Very happy! Make sure that you always take the full dose and the whole bottle as prescribed, even though it feels like it's going away."

"Had what I suspected was a bladder infection that unfortunately I ignored and forgot about for 10 days, with symptoms that more closely lined up with a kidney infection. I've had many UTIs in the last year and one earlier this year. I've taken Bactrim for them before with no issue. Took a home UTI test to confirm suspicions of infection. Consulted a virtual doctor (can't get to an office because of exposure to COVID). And they prescribed Bactrim twice a day for 3 days. Took all the pills, but symptoms came back at 5 am on the last day. (Took last dose of the initial round at 11 pm) Took another home test and showed a trace of infection remained. Didn't know what to do, so I got ahold of the doctor again and requested an extension of the medication. 1 dose in and waiting to see if things improve."

"Took 1 dose (first dose) at 6 am on a Tuesday. By 8 am, throat was sore. 9 am, feet went numb and started feeling odd, throat hurt more as well. By 11 am, feet were red and raw and hurt like nails poking through them. Genitals became beet red and raw! Had a fever and loss of appetite. Did not take any more after the first dose. Thursday, feet were better but still had a sore throat and genitals still raw and felt nauseous. Friday, still sore throat, genitals not as red or raw but developed a hive on them. It's now Saturday and still have a sore throat, color is back to normal on genitals but still have a hive and now another in the pubic hair area. I'm kinda freaking out now and probably go back to the doctor today. All this from one damn pill! UTI still there."

"I did experience some of the side effects associated with this medication: headaches and asthma flare-up (manageable). The benefit of the antibiotic far outweighs the side effects of the medication. I would definitely use it again if ever prescribed."

"Bactrim did not work to cure my UTI. Two doctor visits (because he didn’t listen to me when I said Bactrim doesn’t work for me) and two rounds of antibiotics later, it was fixed. Cipro. Cipro is the only thing that fixes mine. I don’t know why Bactrim doesn’t work on me, but it doesn’t."

"Was told at the doctor's office that I had a urinary tract infection, so I was put on Bactrim. Forgot that I had been on it a couple of years ago for the same thing. Had the same reaction as I did before: continuous stomach upset and severe itching, even though I was taking it with food and drinking plenty of water. Took the first dose Friday evening, last dose was Tuesday morning. One pill twice a day for four days. Last time, it took more than a month to finally get my stomach to quit feeling upset and to quit itching. Not looking forward to this again. Will definitely remember to tell the doctor not to put me on it again. However, it did clear up the infection!"

"I was prescribed this for a rather mild UTI. I took it with a granola bar in the morning and was drinking tons of water. Within 2 hours, the migraine set in, then the nausea and what felt like menstrual cramping, then the body aches and chills, and what I thought was a fever but was really just all my skin becoming very hot. My face looked like it had a slight sunburn. I called the pharmacy, and they said this was not the drug but rather symptoms of my UTI. I was so sick that I left work and went to urgent care, they retested my urine, which now came back negative for everything, and they told me to immediately discontinue taking it. The symptoms lasted well into the evening, and the migraine followed me into the following day. I'm not sure if this was an allergic reaction or if I was just super sensitive to it, but it was one of the worst nights of my life. For reference, I am 5'2, 120 lbs, and was given 160 mg twice daily for 3 days, and I do have a somewhat sensitive stomach."

"I just took one 160 mg tab of Bactrim. This is the worst pill in history. I got a rash, headache, neck and back pain. Sore throat, bad. My whole body, muscles, and joints are in so much pain. Nausea. My husband has to get me food, put me in the tub to take a hot bath. I feel so weak, OMG. Fever of 101.5, which goes up and down still. Chills and lightheaded. The next day, I still have those symptoms. Gonna call my doc on Monday to give me a different pill. If there was a 0 rating, that's what I would give. Thought I was gonna die."

"I have never had such a horrible experience with an antibiotic. I only took it for three days, twice a day, and I was so nauseous I couldn’t eat anything, and I got so dizzy that I couldn’t even walk straight. I will never take this antibiotic again."

"I got this Bactrim DM antibiotic prescribed to me for prostatitis/UTI symptoms not too long ago. I took the medication twice a day for about a month! Some days were better than others. If I took it with an empty stomach and not enough water to swallow the big chunky tablet, my lips would feel some kind of burning sensation going on, and I would just feel kind of itchy all over. If I took it with food and about two glasses of water, I'd be perfectly fine! Anyway, I don't know why, but even after a month of taking the medication twice a day every day, my UTI symptoms are still there! They're not as bad as they were before I started taking the antibiotics, but they're somewhat still noticeable. Grrrrrr!"

"Received a seven-day prescription for Bactrim, and on the 5th day, lost appetite, had terrible body aches, and extreme fatigue. On the 6th day, had a fever and chills too. Stopped the treatment on the 7th day. Then, on the evening of the 8th day, developed a rash all over my upper body and face. Pharmacist recommended Benadryl, which helped somewhat. Having a urinalysis in a week and surely hope it worked and cleared up my urinary tract infection."

"I'm 21 years old with my first UTI. My symptoms started on Saturday (constant urge to go, lower abdominal pressure/cramps, and an extremely uncomfortable urge to continue voiding even after I was done, and dark yellow/brown urine). Went to the doctor yesterday (Wednesday) and was prescribed a 7-day prescription to Bactrim. My symptoms seemed to dissipate within hours (was still feeling them, just not as severe). I've taken 3 doses, and all my symptoms have stopped, and I can have full voids. Not feeling any side effects from the medication, but glad to be feeling better. Urine was still sent in for a culture. Been drinking lots of cranberry juice and water at my doctor's recommendation to 'flush' everything out. Feel much better."

"I took one pill in the evening and another the following morning. I developed extreme stomach pain by noon, which moved to my back, followed by an excruciating headache. I was nauseous but sipped tiny amounts of water to prevent dehydration. I was very weak for two days, my hands trembled. Horrible experience."

"I took this medicine for 48 hours. I’m not a health person as it is. But this medication is horrible. I can’t walk, up all night drinking water as my throat felt like it was closing. My body hurts! I’m shaking, my blood in my body is on fire! Not to mention my legs feel like 250 pounds weights. I stopped taking it on day three, but I'm still sick!"

"I had a bad UTI, and I have taken this in the past, and I am now taking it again. I get 4-7 days depending on the doctor. It almost always clears it up. If you don't eat like I do, then you can get nauseated if you take it on an empty stomach. The pill is huge, so I chew it and use a spoon of yogurt and eat it down like that. I wish they made chewable versions or coated versions, as it's hard to take, but I do take it! The pill is a miracle worker and helps me greatly."

"I've only been on it for 3 days, I could NOT finish the 3rd day. I now have to wait 2 days to get new antibiotics because Bactrim is AWFUL. I felt like I was on my deathbed ever since the 3rd pill. I couldn't take my second pill for the day. Stay AWAY from Septra/Bactrim. Praying the infection won't worsen. I'd rather have something completely safe that will cure my infection. By the way, it did NOTHING for the infection, in fact, it's gotten worse ever since I started taking it. Please DENY any prescriptions for Bactrim/Septra."

"I'm on my 4th day of the dosage. Since day one of taking it, I started vomiting a couple of hours after the dose. Been like that ever since, vomiting and diarrhea all day. Today, I started eating yogurt after taking it on the recommendation of the pharmacist. It has helped some and cut down the severity and frequency of the vomiting and diarrhea but hasn't eliminated it. Can't wait to reach day 7 to be done. I called the doctor, the only thing he said was I had to keep taking it or I'd be admitted to the hospital. Screw that, I'll deal with the stomach issues. Good luck to you if prescribed it and try the yogurt, it helps. By the way, Pepto will make you immediately puke if you try to take some while on Bactrim. I don't know why, but from my personal experience, it does, beware!"

"Only took the medication for 5 days, had read about it online after being prescribed it and got really worried at all the awful side effects. I experienced nausea and headaches and slight itchiness while on it and was glad to finally get off of it. It is my 3rd day off of it and the itching has gotten worse and all over now. I only have a few tiny reddish bumps, though, and I am experiencing anxiety on and off randomly and just feel weird and have also caught a cold (sore throat/cough). Will never take this medication ever again and I severely advise against it."

"The first day, I experienced some nausea. Now? I have a sore in my mouth that popped up out of nowhere, and one side of my bottom lip is swollen. I'm so sick that I can't eat anything and have zero appetite. I keep getting the shakes and chills that weren't there before starting it. I suffer from anxiety, and anxiety is a common side effect of this medication - so now my anxiety is through the roof, and it's also caused severe insomnia. I'm constipated, have terrible muscle spasms and cramps in my legs. I've never had an issue with a sulfa drug before, but after this, I will definitely not take one ever again. It's not worth the side effects/allergic reaction."

"Please remember when reading reviews, people seldom come back to review if their experience was good. I would like to ease some people's minds. Of course, everyone’s body is different, but Bactrim DS 800/160 is my favorite UTI medication. I have minimal side effects. I take each pill with food and a full bottle of water. I experience headaches, and that’s about it. Occasionally, I will feel kind of just 'off.' But nothing crazy. I'd take the side effects versus a UTI any day. Please at least give it a try and remember that anxiety can cause side effects itself. I also get nervous when trying a medication. However, a UTI can’t go untreated. Wishing you all the best."

"NP prescribed Bactrim because I had back-to-back UTIs. Unfortunately, I have an extremely severe allergy to Bactrim that I was not aware of. However, this allergy did not show symptoms until I had been taking it for 6 days. I went to the ER because I was developing a red rash and my throat and tongue were swelling up. The ER doctor turned me away because he thought I had a viral infection. He gave me a Tylenol and sent me home. I ended up going back later that night because I had developed a high fever, headache, and my WBC counts were very low. I saw 10+ different doctors before they could decide if it was actually an allergy. They had to keep me for observation because they were afraid the drug was affecting my internal organs. Did it clear up the UTI? Yes. But if you can avoid the drug, I would suggest you do. If you think you are having an allergic reaction to any drug, please don't let the doctors dismiss you! I didn't trust my gut and I just got sicker because of it."

"I would not recommend this to anyone. I have had bleeding in my urine for over two weeks, and the doctors associated it with a UTI. After being given Macrobid, and symptoms persisting, they gave me Septa. I took it for two days, twice a day with food, was fine. On the third day, not so much. I began shaking uncontrollably, dry mouth, I was incoherent to the point I couldn't even understand what people were saying to me, my heart was racing, I was dizzy, and extremely nauseous. It literally felt like I had been roofied (drugged up). I don't even remember half the night, and I had horrible insomnia. I don't even understand how this is on the market. Would never ever take this again."

"I promised myself if I had a good experience with this drug I would leave a review so others could see that there’s nothing to be scared of. After three rounds of antibiotics to get rid of a UTI, Bactrim was able to clear it in just five days. My symptoms started to feel better the first day. I didn’t take any probiotics or supplements and had zero adverse reactions. My only recommendation is to make sure you’re taking this with a substantial amount of food. Remind her that everyone is different and a lot of people are allergic to antibiotics. Also, I feel as though most people are prone to leave reviews if they had a bad experience versus a good one. If you are an anxious person like myself and are worried about the side effects, don’t be."

"Taking Bactrim for urinary tract infection, can't sleep, stomach on fire, after the first pill I felt like I was tripping on acid. On day three now and back hurts. Looks like I get to miss another day of work and go back to the doctor."
