"I have recurring UTIs and have taken several different antibiotics for them. I was recently prescribed Bactrim DS. After taking the second pill, the aching, pain, and soreness was almost gone. It works better for me than Cipro, but you should always have a urine culture to be sure which antibiotic is best for you. Fortunately, I haven't had any terrible side effects. The only side effect is feeling a bit fatigued a few hours after taking Bactrim."

"Had a bladder infection that I ignored, turned into a very painful kidney infection. Got a 3-day supply of generic Bactrim. Took first pill by 10 am with a ton of water throughout the day. Went to bed all day except to pee 100 times, and I was amazed that I felt way better by the next morning."

"I have been on Bactrim DS for 7 days. After day 3, I began to notice a severe headache about 4 hours after taking the Bactrim. Now on day 7, I have not only had a headache, but light-headedness/nausea. With only 3 days left, I am going to continue the medicine. My urinary tract infection symptoms have improved finally after 5 days."

"Took this for 3 days. 2nd day got severe itching on palms and soles of feet. Day three had uncontrollable shakes, heart racing, felt like it was going to come out of my chest, facial numbness, dizzy, very elevated (for me) blood pressure of 145/90, whole body tingling, dizziness, lightheaded, extremely intense nervousness, ringing in my ears."

"Have taken Bactrim for frequent UTIs in the past with no side effects. Last night I took the first dose of Bactrim DS for yet another UTI; within 10 min, my vaginal area and lips were itching. Took antihistamine and went to bed. This morning my lower lip is very swollen/red, eyes are bloodshot, and have a round red rash on my upper arm. As the morning continued, I felt major flu-like symptoms: chills, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, headache - like death warmed over. Took aspirin for the pain and went to bed until the intense cold feeling left. The symptoms have abated except for the swollen lip, itchy eyes, and red rash. No idea why I had a reaction this time but will discuss it with my doctor. UTIs are bad enough without then getting very ill from the medication."

"This was amazing! I had my first UTI this morning. I had frequency and irritation after I urinated. I took Bactrim about an hour ago, and I was in so much pain until a couple of minutes ago when the medicine kicked in! I feel so much relief, and I have less urge to go! UTIs are terrible, and I'm so sorry for everyone who has gotten one, but I'm also glad that there is medication to treat it and that it works this fast!!!"

"Took Bactrim for a UTI for 7 days. On the 6th day, had chills and body aches. Literally could not get off the couch. Went to the doctor and was negative for the flu, and the UTI was gone. Got worse (headache, severe body aches, nausea, diarrhea, no appetite-honestly the worst I've EVER felt) and ended up in the ER for fluids. Stopped taking it 2 days ago and am still feeling effects. Be careful-wished I had stopped taking it at the first sign of stomach discomfort. Glad it's a reliable drug for some, but for me, it was horrid."

"Bactrim has always worked for my UTI. I do see a pattern in the complaints about. The bottle doesn't say not to consume. If you mix Bactrim with the smallest sip of wine, you will get those side effects that I see mentioned. If you take Bactrim, do not consume any wine, beer, or hard liquor."

"No health insurance. Went to the ER for UTI and was prescribed Bactrim. UTI symptoms quickly subsided (didn't disappear completely but like 90% better), so that was nice. Then the Bactrim symptoms started. Oh man. I had a different set of symptoms every day. First, it was tingly hands and severe fatigue. Then I had a full-blown panic attack (depression and anxiety can be made worse by Bactrim apparently, so I tried to keep reminding myself of that). Last couple of days, I've had headaches and bad nausea. I'm on day 6 of my 7-day course now--gonna try my best to make it through the whole course, but wow, it's tough. I just hope these symptoms clear up once my pills are gone. It got its job done but made me miserable in the process!"

"Loved it! It did its job. On it for 10 days. This drug has been around a long time - nurses use it all the time for 'older' patients. You MUST take it properly with a disciplined regimen. 1) Take some multi-strain probiotics to add back in more good fighter bacteria. 2) Strains should include yeast to prevent yeast infection. 3) Flush (drown) your system with water - shoot for 12 8 oz glasses a day. Add lemon to some of the water for kidney health. 4) Take psyllium fiber, prune juice when necessary. Your gut will be very unbalanced while the army of good and the army of bad are fighting, and you won't know how many 'soldiers' you have on each side at any given time."

"I had a UTI, finished an entire prescription of Macrobid. I noticed as soon as I finished the meds, my UTI symptoms came back - so it didn't work for me. I then tried Bactrim. The pain went away after 1.5 days of being on Bactrim, which was a huge relief, but it is now day 4 and I am suffering from nausea, cold sweats, chills, insomnia, and anxiety. It works for your UTI, but the side effects are unbearable after a few days."

"Was prescribed Bactrim for UTI when first med did not work. 3rd day in, feeling better until 2nd dose taken. Began to feel nausea, dizzy, fatigue, terrible anxiety, unable to sleep or relax. Felt like I was going crazy. Also had constipation, back and stomach pain as well. Almost went to ER. This med is horrible. Never again!"

"I had 3 UTIs this year so far, first in February, got cephalexin prescribed for 7 days. It returned in June, got prescribed ciprofloxacin for 5 days. It had returned in August. I asked the doctor why this is happening. She said they prescribed me the wrong drug the first time, the first drug was resistant to the bacteria I had. (Really? Why do we pay doctors for?) So I got Bactrim DS prescribed now, I'm on day 3, got it for 5 days. I weigh 100 pounds, so I try to take the pill with Activia and Yakult, that helps with the upset stomach. I felt as side effects, dry mouth (because it dehydrates you), loss of appetite, tiredness, fast heart beating. Hope this works for me, can't be sick anymore because of the doctor’s mistake!"

"Can’t sleep for more than 2 to 3 hours at a time, even after taking melatonin. Pretty severe nausea and even worse restlessness. Seems to be working for the UTI, but at the cost of side effects, which are leaving me exhausted and bedridden with no energy."

"I thought I had a UTI, the doctor put me on the antibiotic Bactrim DS. By the third day, I thought I was having a heart attack, heart palpitations were so bad the doctor called and took me off the meds. Apparently, I did not have a UTI, instead, I had a kidney stone. The problem now is heart palpitations never got better when I stopped the Bactrim, and it's 5 months later. Some days are so bad with palpitations, and I have trouble breathing when it happens, I have jitters when it happens. I hope it goes away soon, it's a horrible feeling. I will never take it again."

"This is the second time for me that this has been prescribed for a UTI. The side effects are beyond terrible. Every joint in my body ached, major fatigue, rash, eyes very bloodshot. The worst thing, though, was the dry, cracked lips and loss of mucus membranes in the vulvar, vaginal area. I have never heard of this kind of side effect, and neither did the urologist. This has happened both times I was on Bactrim. I stopped taking it and never will again."

"I have been suffering with a UTI for at least a month and a half. I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin and Cipro 2 times. With those drugs, I still had the urge to urinate, and immediately when I stopped those two antibiotics, the symptoms came right back. Doctors were getting ready to send me to a urologist until I mentioned Bactrim. After one dose of the antibiotic, I was feeling 80% better. I haven't had any side effects yet, and it's day 2. This drug is God-sent!"

"Little did I know, I am horribly allergic to sulfa. After two pills, I began experiencing horrible leg and arm cramps. They were so bad that I was unable to stand for longer than a couple of minutes. These symptoms took about a week to fully disappear, and this was from taking only 2 pills!"

"I took Bactrim 2x a day for 3 days for a UTI. I did experience some strange side effects, but it knocked the UTI out in 24 hrs. My skin felt warm and itchy, and I was very sun sensitive. I was very edgy with my husband and son and had difficulty falling asleep the last night. Glad I'm done with them, but overall I feel it was worth it to get rid of the UTI."

"I was authorized to take Bactrim, 2 pills a day for 5 days, to cure my UTI. This, by far, has been the worst side effects I’ve ever experienced while taking antibiotics. I did eat right before taking the pills, and I got terrible nausea, light-headed spells, and muscle cramps. I drank plenty of water to help dissolve the meds, that was all that seemed to subside, if for a little while."

"Any antibiotic used will put you at risk for a yeast infection. It depletes the normal flora in the vaginal area. Bactrim DS is a great antibiotic to get rid of many forms of infection, though. Weigh your pros and cons. You can always add yogurt to your diet, which assists in helping to prevent yeast infections."

"This antibiotic did horrible for me, it gives me bad migraines even though I drink a ton of water with it. I'm on the second day and have a horrible migraine. My spine hurts to walk, severe leg cramps, joint pain too. It's awful. I will know now to never take this again. My body did not react well. The side effects are not worth it. Next time, I will be sure to tell my doctor to never prescribe me this again!"

"This is my first time commenting on any medicine. Anyway, I almost didn't even take this medicine because of all the bad reviews, but thank God I did!!! Please don't let these negative comments stop you from taking this medicine. The ONLY side effect I currently have is a bit of nausea, and that's only because I do not eat much as I am on a calorie-restricted diet. Maybe these people are having bad reactions because of an allergy to sulfa drugs, or it is just the symptoms of the really bad UTI. IDK... I'm on these pills and have 1 more day left, and it has brought my kidney pain down tremendously. I usually react badly to antibiotics, but not these, so thumbs up!"

"This medicine improved the quality of my life. I have interstitial cystitis. I have to use this twice a day for 20 years. It's hard when I change doctors to get it prescribed, but I always get it. I would not live with the pain of this disease if it was not for this medicine."

"I will never take Bactrim again, despite the fact that it appears to have cleaned up my UTI. I was prescribed 6 pills, 2 per day for 3 days. By pill #2, I lost my appetite and felt very weak and tired. Went to bed very early. As I continued the medication, I developed many flu-like symptoms and spent the next 4 days in bed. Chills, achiness, lethargy, listlessness, extreme tiredness, brain fog, inability to stand up for very long without feeling woozy, not even able to sit up and do light work indoors. This medication had me flat in bed for 4 days straight. Two days after finishing the medication, I have still not regained my strength completely, although I am starting to normalize. I am typically a very active person who works outdoors every day. This one threw me for a loop - never again! I will ask for something else for a UTI."
