Risperidone for Bipolar Disorder "I've been on this med for almost two months. I started on a low dose, but lately I have had to increase the dose to get the most benefits from it. Initially, it will make me tired, but my acute mania would return after a couple of weeks. Been on 4 mg for 3 weeks, but have noticed that weight gain has been an issue for me, but I'll just have to watch what I eat and exercise more. Currently jumped to 5 mg and willing to give it a try. Not too many side effects, like somnolence, anxiety, and fatigue, which go away within two weeks. However, I take other meds, so I'm trying to figure out if I need a mood stabilizer or other meds that I'm taking. Just want to feel better and finish my degree as an adult student without the excessive tiredness. But I've been on Seroquel before, but I got type 2 diabetes from it. For restlessness, I take Cogentin and it works great."

For Bipolar Disorder "Have been on risperidone for years to help treat my bipolar I, but it had more negative side effects than good. Significant weight gain, lethargy, increased anxiety at times, waking up a lot during sleep. The good is that it does slow down my mania pretty well, I’d say I’m 80% manic and 20% depressive. Mania had been causing me problems for years. I had been taking 1 mg twice a day, and it was too much, and I’m a 6’4” 240 lb man. Risperidone 1 mg daily does the trick with less side effects, but definitely talk with your doctor before getting on this med, there are probably better options out there for treatment of bipolar disorder."

Risperidone for Schizoaffective Disorder "Prescribed 4 mg daily after auditory hallucinations. Works well for that, but has caused a notable increase in anxiety, complete loss of appetite, and sex drive. Looking to come off this and try a new med."

For Schizoaffective Disorder "The shrink prescribed Risperdal 3 mg a day, then had me come off it. I had withdrawal symptoms of fear and panic attacks, so I overdosed and took 20 pills of 3 mg, then started hallucinating, then attempted suicide but was arrested by police. They did a procedure in the hospital while I was passed out."

For Schizophrenia "So I started taking the medication 2 years ago. In the beginning, it helps well with hallucinations, paranoid thoughts, and delusions. But it changes your whole brain chemistry. Well, I have always been emotionless, but now I really don’t care about anything. It causes me to feel like a zombie and causes me to be tired. My sex drive is normal. It causes breast milk and weight gain, but I exercise now, so the 40 pounds I gained are gone. And I’m sad because I wanted to gain weight. It causes anxiety, tremors, and causes me to move around a lot. I am different, I used to be so happy, now I’m not at all. It also makes me drowsy. I think about the past a lot and feel as if life is passing me by because of the brain fog. I am 21 and hope to get off of it by the time I’m 23. But the withdrawal effects make me worrisome. I also don’t want the psychosis to come back, but I think I’m good and can control and recognize it. I miss the old me so much, man. I’d give anything to go back."

For Bipolar Disorder "This medication has increased my anxiety severely. I’m presently doing a taper (withdrawals are no picnic either), and I cannot wait to be completely off it. I pray the anxiety subsides because it has become challenging to function with such terribly anxious feelings."

For Schizophrenia "My risperidone dosage is 37.5 IM injection. A lot of side effects including depression, anxiety, fatigue, low motivation, and increased hallucination, but it helped me for mania. My nurse injects me with the product every two weeks."

For Borderline Personality Disorder "At first, it was great, but then I started getting more anxious and tired that I fell asleep on a public bus! I also have cystic acne now that I never had before… so now I’m dealing with that. It did help me with my eating disorder by making me an appropriate weight, but I seemed off the meds because I knew the long-term side effects were too much. 5/10."

For Asperger Syndrome "I went on this medication at 13, and immediately the aggression from my ASD stopped. I used to be out of control and, quite frankly, an angry person, so I give this fact a 10/10. As for the anxiety, I was not controlled by it like my doctor said I would be. It actually got worse to the point where I wasn't going out, wasn't showering/bathing, and I lost all my friends. I didn't get help for a really long time, and because of that, I am now considered unemployable by my province. I am on disability and have no way out except for self-employment, which I worry about too. I used to cut work and get highly emotional because of this medication. So, 1/10 for this fact. As for everything else, I guess I was lucky enough to not need it for anything else. Overall rating is 4/10 because of loss of employment opportunities."

For Anxiety "I took this medication for about 5-6 years. I eventually had to stop taking it because, ironically, it made my anxiety horribly worse and it caused the start of my paranoia."
