For Nausea/Vomiting "I got prochlorperazine in my IV as part of a migraine cocktail at the ER. I didn't understand why I was getting really anxious while waiting for the IV to finish up. I was driven home, and after a half-hour or so, there I was in full-blown akathisia. The mental anguish was harder to bear than the physical pain I'd had from kidney stones. (That's all I can think of to compare it to.) I drove myself back to the ER, the whole way talking myself out of finding a cliff to drive off of to end my suffering. Back at the ER, the MD diagnosed my akathisia and told me diphenhydramine ought to ameliorate my symptoms. He seemed to have been right. I can't imagine any future condition under which I would consent to receiving prochlorperazine again."

"I was given Compazine IV to treat a migraine. This made me feel more lousy than the migraine itself. I couldn't get comfortable, I was restless, I was pacing and anxious. My heart was racing, and I was trembling uncontrollably. I didn't know whether I wanted to lay down, stand up, or sit up. It is 24 hours later, and I still feel the same way. I am an RN, and I have witnessed others experiencing the same adverse reactions to this medication. I would not recommend this drug to anyone for any reason. The slight benefits do NOT outweigh the risks."

For Nausea/Vomiting "I went to the ER for a migraine, and they gave me this for nausea. Worst experience of my life! I immediately started feeling panicked and restless, and my heart rate shot up to 130 even though I was lying down. I ripped out my IV, got up, and paced around, convinced that I would feel like that forever. The nurse came in and told me it was normal and just wrapped me tight in warm blankets so I couldn't move. I couldn't stop shaking and crying until it went away a couple of hours later. Even the Benadryl they gave me as an antidote didn't work. I was wrong in thinking this was a rare side effect! Stay away if you can!"

Prochlorperazine for Nausea/Vomiting "I went to the ER for a severe migraine with nausea and stomach pain. I was given an IV cocktail of Toradol, Benadryl, and Compazine. Within 3 minutes of injection, the room went completely black, I thought I was going to faint, a wave of heat overcame my entire body, and my heart rate skyrocketed. I thought I was dying. I had an extreme urge to leave the hospital, I felt that I was not safe. I hit the call button over and over, begging for someone to help me. I was extremely restless, my jaw was chattering, I couldn’t stop moving my legs, I felt like I was crawling out of my skin. The nurses had to perform an EKG on my heart as I started having abnormal heart rhythms. After 20 - 30 minutes, I was able to calm myself down, however, I kept jerking awake with every sound, movement, or voice. I was admitted for observation overnight and hooked up to a heart monitor until I was released. Nurses said these are common side effects after the fact. I will never take Compazine again!"
