Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "Macrobid definitely works. I had a terrible bladder infection that I noticed began to clear up within a few days of taking this antibiotic. In my personal experience, though, I had terrible side effects: nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and hot and cold sweats. Although the week felt so hard to get through, please don’t be scared to try the medication. If you’re worried about side effects, make sure you are staying very hydrated and taking it with food. I would recommend having some Gravol ready as well, just in case. Good luck."

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection "I got a bladder infection and was prescribed Macrobid. Within a day of taking it, I was so sick. My body ached all over, and I had a difficult time walking. My eyesight and balance were way off. I thought I picked up a virus at the pharmacy or doctor's office. Then I started having a hard time breathing, and I was hallucinating. That went on for 3 1/2 days until the 6th day when I broke out into hives from my neck down. Then I realized it was a reaction to the antibiotic. I took a ride in an ambulance to the ER, and for the next 3 days, I had to have steroids shot into my butt, and I'm taking oral steroids also. It's been 8 days since the ER, and my lungs still hurt, and I can't take a deep breath even with the steroid inhaler. My eyes are shot also."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Horrible side effects from nitrofurantoin, such as high anxiety, dizziness, stomach pain, and headaches. The unnerving anxiety was the worst thing I experienced. They really shouldn't give this out to patients. I tried a couple of days on it and felt so out of myself. Never again. Didn't even touch the infection either."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Been taking this drug for 3 days and not sure if the way I’m feeling is due to the drug or my ongoing stomach issues and anxiety. However, I have been feeling tired, nauseous, and experiencing some dizziness. Also, had a headache for the first 2 days that wouldn’t budge - mainly frontal, behind the eyes! On the plus side, it seems to have cleared the UTI. I’ve completed my course, so hopefully, these symptoms will disappear."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I am 66 yr. old and get a lot of UTIs after going on the bike, in the pool, and apparatus at the gym that causes friction in that area. I usually get ciprofloxacin, which doesn't affect me much. But, Macrobid causes stomach troubles, nausea, chest and lung problems, chills, fevers, dizziness, palpitations, headaches, and more. I didn't have time to say 'no' to the walk-in doc who gave me this again, but I will never, ever use it again. I know it's going to take another week to get 'semi-normal' again, but this med takes me down every time."

Nitrofurantoin for Prevention of Bladder infection "Prescribed Macrobid after misdiagnosis. 2nd day, I was yellow, vomiting, dizzy, weak. Hospitalized at hospital emergencies. Took doctors one week to confirm Macrobid was the reason for my liver failure. Almost lost my life."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I'm taking nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) 100 mg, currently on day 4 of 7 for urinary tract infection (UTI). My urinary tract infection was more than painful pee - I had the whole set of flu-like symptoms like chills, nausea, aches, and of course, painful pee and blood in the urine. I would say about 80% of my symptoms - especially the pain! - were gone within 24 hours, and the only thing I feel now is a bit of itchiness in the urethra when I pee. No big deal. On the downside, I am VERY tired (day 2 was the worst, felt like I was 90 years old), a bit dizzy, certainly nauseous, I feel like I have to breathe really hard, and muscle pain. Overall, very effective for treating urinary tract infection, but I feel like crap and I can't wait to finish the 7-day course."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed Macrobid for a 3-day course, 2 doses a day. The first day I seemed to be getting better, but then I woke up at 4:15 am the morning of the second day with chest pains. Throughout the day, I suffered from headaches, chest pains, muscle and joint aches, nausea, dizziness, fever, and chills. Now on the third day, and though I'm not feeling as ill anymore, I'm still dealing with chest, back, and stomach pains. Can't even tell if treating the UTI because I've been in so much pain. Worst experience I've ever had with antibiotics - would definitely never use Macrobid again!"

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I took this drug after being prescribed it for a UTI. I read some reviews after feeling a little weird but figured I would push through. I called my doctor after taking two pills, and the nurse told me to wait it out and see if it gets worse. Things got worse very quickly. What began as a little bit of nausea ended with body aches, leg cramps, intense chills, night sweats, dizziness, confusion, fainting twice (terrifying), and getting a vaginal infection because of this drug. My UTI symptoms have gotten better, but the pain from my VI is unbearable, and how I feel from this drug is terrible. NOT worth it...do not take this drug. P.S. I only got through taking FOUR pills out of my prescribed ten. I am going to the doctor today, again.:("

For Urinary Tract Infection "Day 1 no symptoms. Day 2 I felt better, then had 5 bowel movements. Day 3 tingling/needle feeling in both feet and the chills. Day 4 no symptoms. Day 5 no symptoms. Day 6 bad headache, chills, fever of 103.4. Ears ringing. Took aspirin, fever broke to 102.2. 3 hours later fever was up to 103.2. Resting heartbeat rate 137-139. (My normal resting heartbeat is 58-64.) Shortness of breath. Day 7 I stopped taking the drug. Shortness of breath. Fever 102.5, resting heartbeat rate 110. Ears ringing. Day 8 fever 100-101.4. Shortness of breath increased. Left eye hurt, sharp pain. Ears ringing. Resting heartbeat rate 99. Day 9 fever dropped down to 96.1! An hour later, temp was 97.0. Checked every 2 hours, temp fluctuated between 96.7 - 97.5. Lungs hurt more. Dizzy. Day 10 temp 97.5. Shortness of breath. Strange intermittent hiccup type of breathing. Headache, right temple sharp pains, pain travels down behind my right ear to the base of the skull. Left eye okay today."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "After having a lot of urine infections for the past year, I am now back on Macrodantin 50 mg, 4 times a day for 7 days. Makes me feel yak, headaches, keeps me awake, slightly dizzy, feel tired a lot. Then doctor wants me to take a low dose of it for 6 weeks. Will keep you posted if it actually works this time. I have my doubts."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Successfully cleared my mild UTI, but not without some uncomfortable side effects. Definitely more gentle on the stomach than other antibiotics, but still experienced diarrhea the entire time. No nausea or vomiting, but definitely had dizziness and general malaise. Spent most of the 7-day course in bed because I was just so weak and off balance. My right arm developed a weakness/numbness that felt like I had laid on it for too long, except it didn’t begin to go away until I stopped treatment. Vivid, intense dreams. Developed some frustrating headaches the last few days of treatment, but nothing severe. Would prefer to take this again over other antibiotics if I had to, but I absolutely hope I don’t have to deal with this medication again."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Went to Dr. as I had blood in my urine, no other symptoms, culture says UTI. Prescription Macrobid. First day I had a massive headache that hurt so bad I cried. 2nd and 3rd day, nausea and diarrhea with increased anxiety. 4th day, dizziness so bad I felt like I was sleeping drunk, sitting to standing was a nightmare and walking was difficult. Felt flu-like the entire time. It has been 2 weeks since I stopped taking it. Had to go to the Dr. again because the dizziness did not go away. Now I have an inner ear problem that needs to be fixed with therapy. Still feeling sick. 2 panic attacks and still an increase in anxiety. Random periods of time feeling like I can’t catch my breath. Will never ever take again. Also, fun side note, still have blood in urine."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I only gave it a 7 because I'm on day 3. Dizziness and nausea, be careful driving before you get a feel for what your reaction will be. Everyone is different. The nausea was often minimized by eating a decent meal with the meds, but it still came back about an hour to 1.5 hours. The dizziness, I felt like I was drinking, seriously. Hopefully, it's all clear when I'm done in 2 days. I was feeling like crap, I wore a T-shirt that I wear to sleep to my evening class today (I'm over 27). Glad I found this site! If you're a female, ensure you don't have Bacterial Vaginitis (BV) because that should be treated as well."

For Bladder Infection "I started taking nitrofurantoin today for a bladder infection, first and only pill at about 1 pm. Felt fine till about 6 pm and started feeling extremely tired to the point I could hardly stay awake. Then came the horrible nausea (thanks for Zofran), along with dizziness, chills, shortness of breath, headache, stuffy nose, and not feeling well in general."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I began to take Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin mono) 100 mg caplets on last Thursday for a UTI. Within 24 hours, I had severe muscle aching, headache, and fatigue. Within 2 days, I had even more severe body aches, joint pain, extreme fatigue and sleepiness, dizziness and difficulty walking, as well as a fever of 101-102 degrees. I went into a walk-in clinic, but symptoms progressed, and by Sunday, I was in the ER thinking I was in septic shock. I assumed my infection had spread, I had no idea it could be a reaction to the antibiotic. After a barrage of tests, including a CT scan, the only possibility is that this poison was wrecking my health. This medication caused me a huge amount of problems. I stopped taking it yesterday and still have a headache, dizziness, muscle aches, and low fever. I can only hope the damage caused by Macrobid is not permanent."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I took my 4th 100 mg Macrobid pill for UTI, and it helped my pain after taking my second dose. I haven't had any problems, but I made sure to take it with food each time. This last pill I took with food, but it has made me very dizzy for some reason. I don't know why it would this time and not the others, but it's very obvious it's the medicine because I was completely fine before I took it and very dizzy for 3 hours now after taking it. At least it's taken the infection away, though, so I'll take the dizziness."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "It made me very sleepy and dizzy. I also got chest pains, and it made my heart race. My urine was also a very bright, almost neon yellow color. I stopped taking it after 2 days, and then I was fine. And I always took it after I ate. The one time I took it on an empty stomach, I vomited and was nauseous for a few hours."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "When I had my first UTI, I was prescribed Bactrim. Later, I found out that I was allergic to it and developed some hives and rashes. Then my doctor switched it to Macrobid. It was great, I did not develop any side effects. The UTI was gone. Three years later, I developed another UTI. I told my doctor that I preferred to be prescribed Macrobid since I responded very well the last time I took it. But this time is different, I started to develop almost all of the side effects. I feel so weak, nauseated, and dizzy all the time. Loss of appetite and my vision turned out a little funny. But my UTI was better, except that the side effects just got me this time. I would say that Macrobid is a good drug for UTI. As we age, our bodies react differently to drugs, and indeed medications/vaccines are not a one size fits all."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This medication made me feel awful. I woke up every day with a bad headache, experienced nausea, dizziness, and extreme tiredness throughout the week (every day). I don't think I can finish the full week as I need to resume my life. I wouldn't take this again. However, the infection seems to be gone, so it worked for that."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "I normally would write off side effects as 'everyone has a different experience, don't try to discourage others.' However, I have just finished my second day of the Macrobid dose for my UTI, and I have never in my life experienced such unbearable side effects. Within about 2 hours of my first dose yesterday morning, I started feeling extremely nauseous, weak, brain fog, and horrible vertigo. I had to call out of work yesterday and today, almost unable to make it out of bed to use the bathroom or anything. This feels worse than just about any flu I have had. Not to mention, my joints all feel like someone hit them with a crowbar. I can't take this anymore, stopping the med ASAP. I don't even care about the negative effects of stopping an antibiotic prematurely at this point. By all means, take your doctor's advice, take this if it is prescribed to you, but listen to your body!!! Call them about any overwhelming side effects, don't put yourself through absolute torture if you don't have to."

For Urinary Tract Infection "So me being super paranoid after being prescribed new antibiotics searched for reviews, and I must say a lot of these reviews absolutely terrified me! I have emetophobia, so the thought of it making me violently ill made me panic so much. I have a UTI and was prescribed 3 days' worth of this to take twice a day. I bit the bullet and took one whilst eating lunch and a big glass of water, then again 6 hours later with a big dinner and another glass of water. So far, no headaches, dizziness, nausea, or actually being poorly. I'm not sure when side effects are supposed to kick in, etc., but so far, so good for me! Please take it, as an untreated UTI is lethal!"

For Bladder Infection "I can say this medication hasn't worked for me, I still have the infection after taking the course, plus an extra course. What I did find was I became very dizzy, I got blurred vision, and nauseous. I suffer from vertigo, and this medicine made that worse, also, I got constipation and lack of appetite. So it was not a happy experience taking this medicine."

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary Tract Infection "Definitely would NOT take this again. I experienced headache, dizziness, stomach pain, diarrhea, muscle pain, tingling in my limbs, I was so weak. I really thought something was wrong, and it just so happened all this started when I took the first pill! I am definitely sticking to my ciprofloxacin! I know everyone's different, good luck to the ones that do take it :/"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Taking 100 mg 2x daily for urinary tract infection. On day 5 of 7 with limited side effects. I have a severe allergy to many medications, but thankfully no severe reaction to this one. I noticed the nausea is alleviated if you drink a full 8 oz glass of water with each dose and continue drinking water throughout the day. I work long hours, so not sure if the drowsiness is caused by the medication or not. Some vaginal itching and discomfort, but so far no vaginal infection. Doctor recommended I eat yogurt daily while on this medication, and I am following doctor's orders! I have felt some dizziness, but it isn't constant."
