"I'm on my 3rd week with this drug, 400 mg, 3 times a day. I can't seem to function. I'm so weak, extreme headaches, nausea, dizziness. I even was in so much pain with heartburn I thought I was having a heart attack last night. Still in A and E at the moment."

"So I got these pills from my dentist for an infected tooth. Although they warned me to not drink alcohol with the tablets, they did not warn me that I would be feeling like I had been hit by a bus after just the second pill. I have had a severe headache all day. I cannot look at bright lights or even the TV. The right side of my body has gone all tight, my chest is tight, and it's difficult to breathe, plus many more side effects. :( This feels more like torture than a treatment."

"I was taking this along with amoxicillin for a dental infection. The side effects were extreme. Nausea and vomiting (bile when no food), severe headache, chills and sweats alternating, diarrhea, no appetite, could not hold food down, even water, fatigue. Not sure why I had to take 2 antibiotics, but will never take this again."

"Went to the dentist June 14th, with toothache, had some X-rays taken, and saw there was an abscess on one of my upper right teeth. Prescribed me 200 mg, 3 per day of metronidazole, which I have had before. By Thursday evening, the right side of my face was swollen, and excruciating pain. Friday was no better. Today, (Saturday) swelling and pain had subsided a lot, but still there, especially in the jaw at the bottom. Hoping that by Monday, the last day of taking them, the abscess would have gone completely. Back to the dentist in 3 weeks' time, either to have a root canal or have the tooth extracted."

"Acute tooth abscess, dead root, extreme pain with constant throbbing. Dead pulp/root removed, and these metronidazole worked a miracle at calming the infection down. By the 4th tab, pain had reduced by 80%. No adverse reactions. Eat food with these and avoid alcohol."

"I was prescribed seven days of metronidazole for a dental infection, augmenting a separate course of co-amoxiclav, which I had already started but which was not working. Five days into the metronidazole course, the medicine seemed to be having an effect on the infection, but it was having a rough effect on me too. Side effects included nausea, flu symptoms - pain in joints and muscles and overwhelming malaise - light sensitivity, as in a migraine, headache, stomach bloating, tingling in my feet. This was so hideously bad that I had to stop the medication after five days. I think metronidazole works, but at a very great cost to the rest of the body if one is as sensitive to it as this."

"Had a severe gumache coupled with a severe headache and earache. The dentist prescribed this drug for 5 days, but on the first night of taking it, I experienced serious pain with episodes of throbbing, and cocodamol and ibuprofen could not take away the pain. I called 999 for help, but they could not do anything. The pain got better on day 3 of metronidazole, with ibuprofen and paracetamol, but the combination has triggered acid reflux and ulcers, but due to the severe gumache, I had no option. On day 4, the pain started again and got better after I applied some toothpaste on the gums. I have just finished the 5-day course, but I feel I haven't recovered, and I'm going back to the dentist."

"I have suffered with teeth issues for years. When you’ve been in that much pain, you’d take anything to never feel that pain again. I’ve had a few teeth removed and been prescribed this, I’ll take whatever comes to me. Some tablets won’t agree with you, so be mindful, but please try this if amoxicillin hasn’t worked. This works."

"I’ve been taking metronidazole for 2 days, and so far no dramatic side effects, but definitely have a metallic taste in my mouth and experienced blurred vision temporarily. But that could have been from a migraine, as I do suffer from ‘silent’ migraines, as they are known. Dental infection seems improved, no stomach issues, but I have lost my appetite a bit, which is perhaps why that’s the case."

"I took these for 5 days for a dental abscess. I had a little heartburn, but that goes with over-the-counter tablets. The metronidazole hasn’t made the slightest bit of difference to the abscess, though."

"Into my second day, and after only 3 x 400 mg tablets, I stopped the treatment. I had severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, dark urine, but worst of all, severe back pain. I stayed in bed for most of the day, even after I stopped the treatment. I will avoid in future."

"Have had a 5-day course. Took the pain away fairly quickly, but not the swelling. Day after stopped, pain coming back, so another course. I hate these. They make me feel weird. Nauseous (eat when you take one), and they’ve affected my mood a lot! Depressed, anxious, spacey…within 3 days of being on them. I hope this next course works because these are apparently common side effects!"

"Was prescribed metronidazole along with amoxicillin by the dentist for an abscess. 6 days later, these antibiotics had wiped out the good bacteria in my gut, leaving me very, very unwell. I was rushed to the hospital, spent a week with horrendous diarrhea so bad I was dehydrated and had significant damage to my large bowel! I'd ended up with a deadly C. diff infection! After a week in the hospital, I was well enough to go home. The whole experience was horrendous! Do not take these tablets together...ever."

"This is my 5th time this year on metronidazole for an impacted wisdom tooth that can't be removed but keeps developing an abscess. It usually follows a failed course of amoxicillin, and although it always clears up the infection, the side effects are pretty awful. I feel like I've had the flu for the first few days (fever, fatigue, unable to sleep, stomach cramps, and loss of appetite), which usually means I have to miss work, and then a really sickly stomach for the last three. It also takes me a few days after finishing the course for my energy levels and stomach to get back to normal. So the drug works, but the side effects are worse than my actual ailment."

"Doc prescribed me metronidazole for 7 days. Dose = 250 mg three times a day. After the first 2 days, I've started to feel confused, with nearly constant headaches and head pressure. I've never felt this before. The next days, the brain fog is even harder, making me feel zombie-like. Still, constant headache and nausea. At least the abscess started to shrink, but after I finished the course, it grew back. Two weeks after, I still have the brain fog, headaches, and tension in the back and around the temples. I'll never take this drug again, it's a nightmare. I wonder when the effects will stop. Talk with your doc before taking it!!"

"Day 3 of taking this, and the worst pain is gone, although my jaw really aches where my tooth needs to be removed, I have had no side effects, but that may be due to the fact I take pantoprazole to protect my stomach from other medication I have to take."

"Worst experience of my life. Most horrific side effects on this drug. Only had 3 x 400 mg and had to stop due to severe nausea, racing heart, and body trembling constantly. Felt like I was slowly dying and will never take this poison again. It did seem to be clearing the infection, but the side effects are much too severe for it to be worth taking."

"This medication is an absolute godsend when it comes to dental infections. I was feeling so bad. However, I did not enjoy the side effects of dizziness. I do take other medication, but the dizziness went when I stopped taking it, so I know it was this particular medication. Still, I would advise it for a dental abscess and to just continue the course."

"14-day prescription, 200 mg 3x day for dental abscess/infection. I was terrified to take this after reading the awful reviews, however, I experienced very minimal symptoms. I had an upset stomach/gassy feeling here and there, but most likely due to eating a lot of yogurt in between doses, as suggested by the physician. The only real symptom I had was a bad taste in my mouth. I recommend taking it after a full meal, drinking plenty of water all day, and staying away from alcohol. I would definitely take this again if required."

"Let’s remember that everybody’s reaction to a drug is different. I can only tell you the experience I had. I was in great pain with a root canal infection. The tooth was due to be taken out in a few weeks, but an infection set in. This drug saved me from horrendous pain and discomfort within two days, it being a five-day course of 400 mg three times per day. Initial slight stomach upset, which was unpleasant, however, work through it if you are in pain, and you will definitely feel the benefit. I am allergic to penicillin, which is why this was prescribed to me."

"This drug has destroyed me. I still have side effects 3 months later. Headaches, fevers, my stomach feels bloated. Feeling detached. There is a Facebook group you can join with other sufferers. The only thing that helped me was taking benfotiamine, a form of vitamin B1 taken with magnesium. It has helped me recover over 2 to 3 weeks. Your brain is basically stripped of thiamine while taking this metronidazole as it crosses the blood-brain barrier. I hope this helps others who are suffering. I will take B1 forever now."

"I was prescribed metronidazole on Monday morning for a dental abscess, 400 mg 3x daily. Yesterday (Tuesday), I slept in a deep sleep for most of the day and night, waking up for medication, food, and water, and having spells of confusion and extreme fatigue, feeling angry and frustrated. This morning (Wednesday) I woke up feeling exhausted and very irritated, not understanding why, crying for no reason. This behavior is completely out of the blue for me. I phoned the dentist's surgery, they were no use whatsoever, said they are not the common side effects for this medication. Family members were worried, so they took me to the doctors, they’ve prescribed me some different antibiotics. Safe to say I will not be taking this again!!!!"

"I have been on this antibiotic going on my 5th day. I have 3 1/2 days left, and my face is not excruciating, although it feels like I've been hit in the temple with a hammer. My neck hurts, my urine is very dark or frequent and colorless. My back started bothering me yesterday, but today I am really uncomfortable. The pain meds are not working, and I'm worried they are affecting my kidneys (Advil 800 mg and a really strong prescribed pain med). After reading the above comments, I'm thinking I would feel better without pain meds, considering they could be making my body work hard to process all the medicine."

"Pain last Friday, but didn't go to the dentist. Banging on his door Tuesday (bank holiday!) Cleared out an infection between 2 teeth, X-ray showed no sign of trouble. Another sleepless night and I'm back and got 200 mg Metronidazole and 500 mg Amoxicillin, 3 a day for a week. 48 hours in, and I'm typing this at 4:10 a.m. For something to do and hopefully inform others. Just want the pain to stop. Taking paracetamol, but not effective. Bonus: no side effects and no horrid taste. The tooth is crowned and root-filled, so I just hope the drugs work, as I once took Fosamax, which can make dental work very dodgy regarding possible complications."

"Was prescribed metronidazole for my gum abscess. Suffered from side effects ever since the first dose. I'm on 2 tablets 3 times a day. Stomach has been producing more gastric juice and there's a burning sensation. It leaves a bitter taste on your tongue for a while after you've swallowed the tablets. Worst of all, I've been feeling nauseous all day."
