"2 times a day, 500 milligrams for 10 days. Worked great, taste was kind of horrible. I recommend to drink with juice. Slight headaches, nothing abnormal, though. Slight insomnia first day, but after that, I noticed my infected abscess on my jawline was fading away. In 3 days, all pain was gone, still finished my course because you never can be too safe."

"I've been taking these meds 3 times per day for the past 3 days for a dental abscess I contracted during a root canal. Overall, the drugs have been amazing in easing the pain and discomfort that came with the infection. The side effects, however, are horrendous. I have experienced serious bouts of nausea, moodiness, and bloating. I have a couple more tablets to go, but I'm ever so tempted to stop taking them, however, I desperately need the infection to finish so I can finally be done with the root canal, so I guess I'll just keep going."

"Great experience, 3x a day 200 mg - no side issues, took the swelling and pain away and also cleared up an infection of BV (which it wasn't even provided for - but I know it often is used for this too) - I only took it for 4 days."

"Been taking this medication for the second time, first for an abscess, then a tooth was taken out, now for dry socket, and I can't wait to finish them. I feel awful - so tired all the time, (slept all over New Year) feeling drowsy, headaches, blurred vision. Finish them tomorrow, thank goodness. I've been taking 200 mg 4 times a day for 5 days, just hope it's the end of my nightmare."

"I'm currently taking both of these antibiotics for an abscess. My toothache went away within a day, and my swelling has calmed down slightly, but it's become a lot easier to talk and smile again due to the pain disappearing (I physically couldn't smile to a certain degree, it hurt too much too). Side effects: I have experienced drowsiness, dizziness, and I have been feeling lightheaded, but it also really hurts when I move my head, e.g., bending down, moving my head side to side, etc. It feels like all the blood is rushing to the side I move to. Painful anyway."

"Was prescribed 200 mg of Metronidazole 3 times a day along with 500 mg of Amoxicillin for a dental abscess. I've taken Amoxicillin several times before, and I know I have no adverse reaction, so all of the side effects must be due to the Metronidazole. Had a severe wisdom tooth infection which completely locked the right-hand side of my jaw, and was prescribed Metronidazole by the emergency dentist. Seems to be working as I'm now on day 4, and my jaw has mostly unlocked and the pain and swelling have reduced greatly, but the side effects are horrible. I'm so tired constantly and feel as if I have no motivation to do anything, which is awful at work. It's also given me anxiety, a really tight chest, and heart palpitations, which aren't helping the anxiety. I have headaches and brain fog, and my stomach definitely doesn't feel right. If possible, I would recommend requesting another form of antibiotics. They've been just about bearable for me, but I wouldn't take them again unless there was no other option."

"I am just in the beginning stages of a left front tooth abscess, went in to see my dentist. After examination, he lanced the golf ball-sized swelling and drained most of the infection out. I am on my second day of metronidazole 400 mg, 3 x a day. I am in very little pain with some discomfort, but the antibiotic seems to be working. I am making sure to take it with plenty of water and during meals and no alcohol."

"I have an impacted wisdom tooth that the dentist said couldn’t be removed so close to going overseas and gave me the script, emphasizing NO ALCOHOL AT ALL. Day 1: no side effects and pain went from a 10/10 to a 7. Taking ibuprofen and paracetamol every 6 hours + heat packs. I made sure I ate something with each dose. I haven’t noticed the horrible taste of the tablets everyone is talking about. Day 2: still no side effects apart from the metallic taste in my mouth, but it’s not that bad. Pain is bearable at about 6/10. Last night I couldn’t sleep and had an ache in my temple area, but it wasn’t unbearable. Day 3: woke up with no significant pain and still no other side effects. The wisdom tooth area is tender, and I feel a little bit off, but I would say that’s because of all the painkillers I’ve been taking. So, the bottom line is the side effects don’t hit everybody, so it’s worth a go if you’re in a lot of pain. To be continued..."

"I had an abscess on my right molar and was prescribed this and Metazol. I also had nausea and vomiting and felt sickly, but compared to the pain from the abscess, I would rather take it anytime. It took one day on these meds for the swelling to go down. My whole right side was severely swollen, and one day after these meds, the swelling came down considerably, and I could face people again. I am thankful that the abscess burst after two days on the meds, and now I have undergone the extraction and surgery and am still on these meds in fear of any further infection. It's been weeks now, and I have one week to go on them and wouldn't stop even if I was hanging over a toilet bowl throwing up constantly."

"WOW! I can't stop being sick on these, but they are clearing the infection and easing the pain. Typical over Christmas :( I have to keep taking them! I suppose being sick is better than the awful pain my wisdom teeth cause me. Can't wait for them to be removed!"

"It works well for a severe dental infection. The big thing is the warning 'no alcohol.' It means NO alcohol. I was fine until I inadvertently ate a prawn cocktail with alcohol in the sauce without thinking. Dreadful. As I am a cardiac patient anyway, the chest tightness and palpitations are dangerous. There really MUST be more comprehensive warnings on this drug, particularly for heart patients. The benefits are good, but the downsides are potentially fatal."

"Developed a pretty nasty abscess around my tooth. I left it until the pain was so unbearable I had to keep my mouth open at all times to avoid anything touching my front tooth. Three days of no sleep and no food before my dentist prescribed a 250 mg course of metronidazole for 5 days as there were no signs of decay in my tooth, and he didn’t want to have to fill it if it could be avoided. Pleased to say metronidazole cleared the infection within 3 days. After one day, I could sleep and eat soft foods, and after two, I could go back to eating foods I needed to bite again. Now, after four days on the treatment, only some slight swelling remains, but it gets less and less noticeable every day. Having a follow-up to check progress soon. As for side effects, I experienced some headaches and drowsiness, which was to be expected and I was warned might happen. Also, one night of rather intense night sweats. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back on this drug if necessary in the future."

"I was prescribed this medicine at 500 milligrams twice daily. At first, my infection seemed to get better, the pain decreased. I noticed some shortness of breath within the first couple of days. By the third and fourth day of taking this medication, I had muscle aches over my entire body, joint pain, would wake up in the middle of the night with a severe dry mouth, headaches, and a bad rash that was extremely itchy and Benadryl would not relieve. Now, on my fifth day, I have decided to discontinue this product because the muscle pain and itching are far worse than the infection it is treating. I believe this is possibly a good medication, however, I believe maybe I should have been given a smaller dose."

"It seems to be helping the infection, but the side effects are hard to deal with. Not used to being nauseous or having any kind of side effects at all. But I have found out that smoking marijuana helps with the nausea and the dizziness. Highly recommend the drug if you have an infection. But also highly recommend having a bag of herb for the nausea. I would highly recommend smoking before you take your daily dose. It stops the nausea before it ever happens."

"On metronidazole for the 3rd time in the last few months (I completed all the previous courses prescribed) and had a tooth extraction of my back tooth following a failed root canal. I have been prescribed metronidazole again as I know amoxicillin would not touch the ongoing abscess... I am on my 3rd day of metronidazole 400 mg thrice a day and no signs of the abscess settling down, and I don't think I can deal with the side effects anymore. I have a headache, feeling spaced out, moodiness, and trouble sleeping for the last 2 days. It's 2:40 am, and I am wide awake and have not had a good night's sleep the night before... I just can't bear the idea of being in too much pain over the Christmas holidays and hoping the abscess will drain now that the tooth is out."

Metronidazole "I was prescribed Flagyl three a day for 10 days due to a tonsil abscess. I’m on the 7th day, and I will not be continuing. This medication feels like torture. I throw up or dry heave every time I take a pill. Nothing tastes normal, which makes me not want to eat or drink. I am beyond weak and have lost so much weight in so little time. My doctors told me this was normal, when in fact it feels rather unhealthy. I would honestly rather have my initial infection than to experience the side effects of this medication ever again. It’s that bad."

"Had a wisdom tooth removed and was prescribed these (400 mg × 3 times daily). I was warned no alcohol, so I had a good run at the wine after the extraction and started these the next morning. I felt a bit nauseous after the 1st and worse after the second, but it might be because of the 3 bottles of wine. Hopefully, they will do the trick. I think if I ever get them prescribed again, I'll go without the alcohol beforehand."

"I was absolutely terrified of taking this medication after reading other reviews of severe side effects as I was going on holiday with an 18-hour flight! I was prescribed these for a week due to an infection after wisdom teeth removal, and it started to bring the infection under control after around 3 days, and I fortunately did not have any noticeable side effects bar feeling a bit more tired than normal. I had one night of severe sickness, but I attributed that to jet lag/heat rather than the medication, as it was on day 7 of the treatment."

"I started taking these Friday evening (it’s now Sunday morning). I have an infected wisdom tooth on the bottom right; it has only just pierced the gum. The pain was unbearable, resulting in half of my face swelling up within one day. On day one, I woke up to less pain, but still the swelling hadn’t really changed much; but I felt positive it hadn’t gotten bigger. I did have a slight headache, which through the course of the day got more intense; even laying in a dark room didn’t change it. I’ve now woken up today on day 2; the headache is still there very mildly, and the pain in my gum has halved, and the swelling has too! So I’m feeling rather positive! (I can finally completely shut my mouth and put my teeth together.) Along with the side effect of a headache, I have also had a lot of hot sweats when I sleep, but I will manage these until I finish the course! Unless anything gets drastically worse!"

"Started this medication this morning after wisdom extraction last Sat, which resulted in a severe dry socket. Day 1 of 5 (400 mg 3 times a day), no adverse reaction yet. I was told by day 3 I'll see a huge difference, so fingers crossed as dry socket is horrendous!!!!!"

"Oh my goodness, what an experience. I started these on Tuesday around midday. It’s now Thursday at 4 pm, and I feel rough. I can’t leave my bed, I keep feeling very weak and shaky, extreme diarrhea, and shivering. Stay away from alcohol! Mum cooked with alcohol last night without thinking, I was very, very sick overnight and have felt rough since. At least my tooth is feeling better!"

"I'm sharing my experience with you as I have been quite unwell, not being told about any side effects from this, so I came online to read about it. 1st of all is yogurt... Natural... Take this with or after your tablet to help with sickness. I take Omeprazole already due to inflammation of the stomach lining, and asked for this also to help with sickness. I have had flu symptoms since tablet 4 (day 2) - am on 400 mg 3 times a day for 5 days due to a front tooth infection. This has already had root treatment, so I'm praying the tablets work and no extraction is needed, as I can't afford £400 for a re-root canal! (not available on NHS) On day 4, I have taken 9 so far. Definitely flu symptoms: aching, sweats, sickness feeling not as bad now. I'm having yogurt, sleeping, but also can't sleep, feeling mad dreams, and have cried for the 1st time in at least a year regarding feeling emotional and not due to pain! Very restless but so exhausted feeling. Will review in 2 days as it has definitely decreased pain but not killed it yet!"

"After suffering years with bad teeth, I finally broke down and went to the dentist. I’ve had some pain on and off, but nothing that leveled me. X-rays showed a bad abscess in my eye tooth and a newly formed pocket of pus at the top of the gum line. I didn’t even know it was there, and my only pain was hot and cold sensitivity, and my face looked puffy. I just thought I was getting old. The doctor wouldn’t touch me, he just kept mumbling about bad infections and IV therapy, and I was at a loss because, well, I just didn’t feel that much pain. I’m on day one of this med, and I feel awful, but if it gets rid of the infection I didn’t know I had, it’s worth it. 2000 MGs daily for 10 days... I hope it helps me!!!"

"OMG! This medication is 'WONDERFUL.' I had a nightmare of a tooth extraction surgically, and I was sliced in several areas to get my tooth out, hence, I have very dense bones. The pain the following week just got worse despite taking Ibuprofen and Paracetamol every 4 hours at the same time. A revisit back to my dental surgeon who prescribed me this antibiotic. After just 2 hours, the pain subsided as much as 80%. I just could not believe it, plus all the swelling has virtually disappeared. I just cannot tell anyone how much pain I was in prior to taking this med: no sleep for a week and not able to eat, pains in my jaw right up to my ear, 'Horrendous.' So, I am only a day in taking these meds with no side effects whatsoever. Truly a 'miracle'."

"Gum abscess, new dentist prescribed metronidazole. First day, I took three as was advised. Sweating, feeling tired, depressed, and irritable, thought this was just part of the process after a bad tooth and gum issue. Day two, after another sleepless night, and the symptoms got worse. Severe swelling to the face, up around the eyes, and also very little pain relief. Thought it was part of the process, but by God, it was miserable. Not hungry, unsettled bowels, etc. This pain did not let you sit down, I had to walk around the house for three hours after taking this medication. Again, I thought it was part of the process. Another sleepless night. (I was taking paracetamol and anti-inflammatories too.) Day three, stopped, still in pain."
