For Diverticulitis "I was on metronidazole (Flagyl) & ciprofloxacin for diverticulitis. Let me start off by saying these two medications together SUCK, however they DO work. I have never had any problems with medications...ever (in 40 years). This time though, at times, I thought I was dying! Best described as the worst flu ever. Massive nausea, occasional vomiting, diarrhea, exhaustion, horrible taste in my mouth, nothing tasted good, and my appetite was bad. Day 4 was the peak of feeling awful. I went to every review site trying to gather what worked to curb the symptoms. Everyone is different, so what worked for others didn't necessarily work for me. Here is what did work for me a bit, in case it can help anyone else. 1.) Try not to take them together. Split up the doses by like an hour or so. 2.) Take each dose with a little food (even if you aren't hungry), something bland. DO NOT USE DAIRY PRODUCTS. This made my nausea worse! 3.) Have mints or candy at all times. Your mouth will feel gross and things will taste funny. However, I found spearmints also helped soothe the tummy a bit. 4.) Pepto-Bismol. 5.) Try not to take them immediately before bed at night. Give it about an hour or two. I noticed nausea will wake me up throughout the night if I take them too close to going to sleep. GOOD LUCK, and remember: Your doctor prescribed these for a reason. A reason that could turn into life-threatening unless you get it controlled. The worst thing ever is to start taking an antibiotic and then stopping it mid-cycle, as your body then becomes immune to it and is essentially ineffective."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Awful tablets, I was given a 7-day course. I couldn't eat, the taste was horrendous. Drinking water made it worse. I experienced confusion, feeling sick, and feeling genuinely unwell. I would never take it again for stomach bacteria."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "If I could rate this medication a 0, I would. This medication has altered my life and I have experienced a toxic reaction to it. I have experienced neuropathy all over my body, numbness, become bedridden due to weakness, and have had seizure and stroke-like symptoms. Please tell your loved ones to avoid this medication if possible."

For Dental Abscess "I had a tooth abscess for 3 weeks. I was on other antibiotics, and it kept getting worse. I started taking this drug, and within 24 hours, the pain finally started to subside. Yes, there are some stomach issues with this medication, but nothing compared to the pain from the dental abscess. I am so glad to find something to get rid of the pain and infection!"

Metronidazole for Diverticulitis "I deal with diverticulitis every 9 to 12 months. CT scans over the past 15 years keep showing mild diverticulitis as they call it, but when it hits, it feels nothing like mild! Nasty lower left abdominal pain. Sometimes I get a fever. Now my doctor just put me on antibiotics as soon as I get symptoms because I always go into a fever eventually. Yes, going on this for 7 to 10 days can give you diarrhea. I found quite a while ago, since probiotic yogurt came out, as long as I eat lots of that, I rarely get diarrhea now. And since you should be on a liquid and very soft food diet anyway, just switch yourself and eat nothing but probiotic yogurt and soups while you're taking this stuff. Always take it with a meal too. And no alcohol!"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "I got a prescription for metronidazole for BV, and after reading reviews, I was terrified to start taking it - I was afraid of the side effects because the comments were so scary. I did eventually take it (2x400mg for 5 days), and literally had NO side effects (not even diarrhea/nausea that I usually get from antibiotics). It cleared up my BV. I decided to write a review because I feel like other people might also get a wrong impression reading these reviews. Although some people will unfortunately have side effects, it's good to remember that most will not (and the ones that had a positive experience with the drug probably won't feel the need to even write reviews), so if you got a prescription for metronidazole, I recommend just taking it and not reading reviews in advance."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Flagyl was a miracle drug for my SIBO/IBS. The first time I used it 20 years ago I was unexplainably sick/nauseated and losing weight for months, and after a colonoscopy and gallbladder scan, the docs didn’t know what was wrong. One happened to put me on Flagyl, and the next day I was better! I had no problem with this drug at all. I have just recently had the same flare-up for the past 6 weeks, and my doc put me on Flagyl. Within 4 hours, I was feeling better. I am 7 days into a 10-day run, and I haven’t felt this good in years. I am 66, have motility issues, and this drug worked wonders for SIBO/IBS."

Metronidazole for Dental Abscess "I am not one to write reviews, but this has to be done. I am based in the UK and was given this medication for wisdom tooth pain. I was told to take it three times a day for 5 days. After two days, I was unfortunately a victim of being the 1 in 10,000 to receive rare side effects from the medication. I had external dizziness and blurred vision every 30 seconds. I went to the GP (doctor) and they said I was given a high dosage and it should have been 2 tablets per day. After 9 painful days, the antibiotic was cleared from my body and I am dizzy and blur-free. I wrote this review because of the hours of research. I have seen no one state how long it took for the side effects to disappear without hospital treatment. Hopefully, this helps someone. Overall, the tablet got rid of the pain, but the extreme dizziness as a side effect was not worth it."

For Bacterial Vaginosis "I am on day 4 out of 7 taking this metronidazole antibiotic. I was prescribed 2 per day. I have awful fatigue and brain fogginess. I feel like I am in a dream, my stomach is so sick, and I have super painful stomach cramping that had me in tears today. Diarrhea as well. I’m very nauseous even if I take this with food. This medication is very hard to take. I want to give up on it. I’ve never experienced side effects like this."

For Diverticulitis "I took Flagyl and Cipro together for 10 days for apparent diverticulitis. I haven’t used any antibiotics for years. My experience was awful and I’m still having problems after my last dose 4 days ago. I have diarrhea, bad taste in my mouth, loss of appetite (forcing myself to eat), weight loss, and body aches. My doctor is going to check for other problems but I think these medications really messed me up. I hope the symptoms go away. It’s scary feeling like this. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. Makes me realize I’m not alone."

For Trichomoniasis "When I went into the ER, as I felt like ripping my insides out - down there. They diagnosed me with trichomoniasis. They gave me the one-time dose of 4 metronidazole 500mg pills. I will tell you swallowing them was terrible. I made the mistake of taking two at once first. They got stuck in my throat, I choked, and they came up dissolved and some went into my nose from inside my mouth. I had the most awful taste in my mouth. BUT immediately got something to eat after and so far (7 hours later) I have experienced not one side effect. My symptoms are not fully gone, I’m still itchy a bit down there, but the discharge has already subsided and the itching IS getting better. The doctor says allow 7 days for the medication to fully run its course. It’s an amazing medication that, in my experience, works far better and faster than any other antibiotic for any other diagnosis (not related to STIs). Quickest relief by far, and luckily so, because with this, relief is much needed. This girl, never ever wants to have sex again!"

For Diverticulitis "Taking Metronidazole 500 mg with Ciprofloxacin twice a day for diverticulitis. Day 3 and worse than the disease itself. Dizzy, not sleeping, and heart palpitations. This is bad for a 72-year-old female. Unsure if I will continue."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "I would not recommend taking Flagyl at all. I was given a one-time high dosage of 5 pills at once and have experienced terrible anxiety, shortness of breath, insomnia, and diarrhea. I was up all night worried sick about how I am feeling and just wishing I never took them at all. I don’t know why this drug is still on the market. Hoping my side effects disappear within 24 hours. It has definitely taken the infection away but in my opinion not worth the paranoia."

For Diverticulitis "Nasty diverticulitis off and on for 20 plus years... 2-3 times per year. Flagyl and Augmentin work fine, it takes about a week to get back to normal. However, in the last few years, Flagyl causes significant dizziness after 4 days... really like being very drunk. Plus, it now causes terrible tinnitus. I suspect I have just taken too much over the years (P.S. I am a doctor). I will look around for an alternative."

For Trichomoniasis "I had gotten diagnosed with trichomoniasis and they prescribed me this medication. The instructions were to take 4 pills at once (2000 mg). I thought that was absurd. Naturally paranoid with taking medication in the first place, I looked up the reviews and I did not see positive feedback. A lot of people said they had gotten sick or had heart palpitations, so my anxiety kicked in and it took me four days to finally suck it up and take it. Well, I took it before bed (it said dizziness may occur) and I went right to sleep. Woke up and felt nothing. Long story short, make sure you take it on a full stomach, take it before bed, and you should be fine. Don’t let reviews scare you because chances are those people didn’t follow the instructions. You'll be fine!"

Metronidazole for Diverticulitis "The first time I ever had diverticulitis, I ended up in the hospital for three days with massive doses of Flagyl through an IV. After that, I had a couple of bouts of what I thought were UTIs but ended up as the start of diverticulitis (which mostly happens when I travel). Because I recognize the symptoms, I am allowed to have a few pills with me at all times just in case, and catching the attack soon enough usually only requires a couple of doses. It has been an absolute lifesaver! I've had to do the routine of many days and add in Cipro, so it's one of those cases where you need to be in tune with what's happening with your body to avoid getting that sick."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Nah-ah. Never again. Worst medication I have ever taken. On my second day of taking this tablet, I was feeling nauseous. My appetite was bad, and my stomach felt sick. Headaches, fatigue, easily irritated. I dreaded taking it when the time came. It made me absolutely miserable. My resting heart rate went up to 105 bpm. Even raising my voice ever so slightly made my heart pound harder. It was very stressful. Steer clear. I felt stupid taking this medicine for side effects that were much worse than the reason I needed them for."

For Bacterial Vaginosis "I'm always prescribed this for when I have bacterial vaginosis - 500 mg 2x/day for 7 days. I always make sure to take it on a full stomach to avoid nausea. The only real side effect I experience is dark yellow/orange urine after taking it for a few days, and it goes away when I stop taking it, and slight nausea and loss of appetite. Like I said, having a full meal before taking it helps a lot. It works as intended. My only complaint is the horrible bitter taste when taking it, so to avoid that, I have to take it with extremely sweet drinks like some soda and try to swallow it fast so I don't taste it."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Just finished a 14-day course of Xifaxin and Flagyl for SIBO-C (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth with constipation). I was admittedly anxious about taking it at all due to some of the horrible reviews in general on the internet. However, I was fine. I actually stuck the pill inside a blueberry and took it on a spoon of applesauce. It worked like a charm. I also followed the instructions to take the Flagyl every 8 hours, which meant keeping a weird eating schedule. I experienced virtually no metallic taste issues, had some minor side effects, but generally felt well with good energy. I wanted to comment, as I believe people who tolerate it do not tend to make the effort to comment. The only way to know is to try. I am hoping this course of antibiotics will reduce the bacteria in my gut and help on the journey to healing."

For Trichomoniasis "So I'm a female, I went in for an exam a month ago and my results came back positive for chlamydia. I was prescribed the 2 oral antibiotic tablets to take as one dosage. I didn't have symptoms, of course, beforehand and had some after taking the medicine, so I assume it was flushing out. So I went for my follow-up a few weeks later and had another exam. I had trich and BV, so I was prescribed the 4 pills of flagyl 500mg to take as one dosage, followed up by one dosage of diflucan 150 mg because I get yeast infections after taking antibiotics. I highly recommend taking the one dosage of four pills instead of the seven or two days. I ate before taking the medicine, however, later on in the day, I felt nauseous. I had a metallic taste in my mouth even when trying to drink water, so I just slept it off. However, the next day, I'm feeling great, no odor, no discharge, no nothing. And my results came back negative for any other STDs."

Metronidazole for Diverticulitis "I was prescribed Flagyl and Cipro for diverticulitis. Oh my goodness. The drug radically wasted my muscles and made me feel dreadful, like I was slipping away. I got to where just looking at the pill made me vomit immediately. My doctor switched me to Augmentin, which worked well, no problem. Why is Flagyl even legal?"

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Been on this for a week! Even though it's taking care of my issue, I can't wait to take my last pill. I've been sick to my stomach, loss of appetite, headache, dizzy, blurry vision, disoriented, fatigued, can't sleep well. Just ready for this course to be over."

Metronidazole for Diverticulitis "I have had a recent flare-up of diverticulitis and was given Metronidazole (Flagyl) and Cipro for 10 days. I immediately started having severe gastritis (severe pain and burning) in my stomach. I suspected it was the Metronidazole, and every day the situation became worse! I developed painful urination and bladder symptoms, sores in my mouth, and severe stomach burning/heartburn. I read online that these were serious side effects of Metronidazole. I had to stop the Metronidazole after 5 days, even though my doctor insisted that I take it. Bladder symptoms resolved within 24 hours after stopping the drug. It has been 5 weeks, and my stomach is still on fire. I can’t eat properly as everything causes me stomach pain. I am now scheduled for an endoscopy to see what is wrong with my stomach and esophagus. I will NEVER take Metronidazole again!"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "Had a terrible smell and had discharge constantly. After the second day on antibiotics, it went away! But once during the 10-day period, I had sex, so please follow directions. NO SEX because you will ruin the treatment and will have to start over."

Metronidazole for Diverticulitis "This is my third diverticulitis event in 9 years, and each time I have been treated with Cipro and Flagyl, but I do not remember feeling so awful the first two times, nor do I remember the horrifically bad taste of the metronidazole (Flagyl). I can hardly get it down, and after I do, the horrible taste in my mouth is beyond description. I have resorted to immediately grabbing a lollipop to coat my mouth and pharynx with the sweet sugary taste, which actually does help. On top of that, I am nauseated, dizzy, have a foggy brain, and nothing tastes normal or good, not even water. I am thankful for the improvement in the abdominal pain, as that shows that the horrid stuff is working, but dang, can't they put it in a capsule?"
