For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "I am currently taking Metformin. I was prescribed it in June for PCOS. I am 23 years old. I can honestly say, I didn't get consistent with taking it until September to now. I am currently on day 29 of bleeding (menstrual). I am kind of a mess emotionally and just want to stop bleeding. I take 1000 mg a day of metformin. Considering upping to 2000 mg as the doctor recommended in the first place, it just took time to get my body to stop having the side effects. IDK at this point how I feel about Metformin. My acne has gotten way better. That's one benefit. I just really need to lose weight. I also just want to stop bleeding. I'm just over it. It's starting to depress me. Thanks for letting me vent. I need friends who are going through PCOS. I could really use some support. For a support group, Google: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Support Group in drugs.com."

For Insulin Resistance Syndrome "Had a miscarriage and went up 5 to 7 kg in a matter of days. Then would diet and exercise to extreme and come down 1 or 2 kg after many weeks, then suddenly I'd balloon again 5 to 7 kg. So just kept getting bigger. Docs kept saying diet and exercise. Also had a very hard stomach and bloating. Swelling in hands and feet. So bad couldn't wear shoes. Got put on Metformin. Didn't really change diet or exercise and dropped 4.4 kg in 12 days. Am told miscarriage caused insulin spike. I am overweight, and prior to this incident had slow and steady lost over 60 kg but found it a huge slog. Lots of work, minimal reward. I am not diabetic. My sugars are normal. All very odd. Any thoughts?"

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 16, and at the age of 18, I was told I would never conceive a child, let alone carry to full term because of my PCOS. I have been on metformin since then. I am now 29 years old and just had my third child, all because of metformin. I'm not going to lie, this medication has its ups and downs, but I've learned over the years to take it 1 hour before my meals and always on time, never skip a dose. I am now losing weight like butter, and I am currently on microgestin for birth control methods."

For Insulin Resistance Syndrome "Took antidepressants for over 25 years. Had given up when I was diagnosed with insulin resistance. A friendly doctor prescribed 1,500mg Metformin daily. Great relief from my symptoms which only later were discovered to be the result of Hereditary Hemochromatosis. I am 66."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I am a 53-year-old female, have Type 2 diabetes. I was on metformin for 4 years with good control, then developed stomach problems (24/7 nausea). I have a new endocrinologist, and he recommended metformin ER. After two days, I no longer experience the stomach upset. Overall, I am very happy with the medication."

For Insulin Resistance Syndrome "Reading the ones where folks were 'miserable' and had GI issues from it - some people have this from not eating correctly. I immediately noticed a difference in my eating habits. I was full quicker and had more energy. I am bipolar and am on medications for that, but this did help me greatly. I did not want to stop taking Abilify, and my doctor prescribed me Metformin, and I can honestly say I have never felt better. So please make sure if you have these side effects - try eating better for a few days - more protein and way less carbs. All those carbs turn into sugar, etc., so that is why you are not feeling well. My doctor told me this from the start, and I was like no way...and he was right. I reduced carbs the second week of taking this and have not looked back."

For Female Infertility "I have PCOS, so sometimes I don't get a period. Sometimes I do. I wanted to take metformin, and one month later, I got pregnant quick! And I've been trying for 6 years. Metformin restored my fertility!"

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "I love all the reviews here. Love seeing how open women are to discussing such a personal issue. So here's my story, I never had regular periods, maybe 2-3 times a year. I got married at the age of 24 and after a year or two of trying I went to a doctor and she said it may be PCOS. Never really went back to that doctor (wasn't crazy about her). At the age of 28, I said enough is enough, headed to a fertility clinic where they definitely said I had PCOS. They started me on metformin as well as Ovasitol (a supplement for women with PCOS... it's pretty new, however ladies these 2 together... MIRACLE!!!) after just 5 months on these 2 drugs and one round of Femara (a pill you take for 3-5 days that helps with ovulation) I was pregnant. Good luck!"

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "My normal cycles are about 44-63 days. I started metformin on January 12, 2015, at 500mg a day with Imodium every other day for the first week. After the first week, I started 1000mg. My period was on January 5th, then by February 6th, I started again. I haven't had a back-to-back cycle since 2007. Metformin is definitely effective in some females with polycystic ovarian syndrome."

Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes "I consider Glucophage a successful treatment because it has been prescribed to me for ten years and I've had no adverse effects at all. Aside from favorable blood sugar results, I don't even feel the drug is in my system."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I'm actually prediabetic. I've been on this drug for 3 weeks. I've lost 9 pounds. I saw my doctor today because things taste very salty to me. I'm having wild dreams, sweats then cold, and absolutely no appetite. We talked, and I'm going to continue for another 10 days until I'm seen again. Does anyone else on this medication experience any of what I am?"

For Female Infertility "I had hypothyroidism, and I was extremely overweight. I lost 4 stone and took my metformin and became pregnant in April 2011. I think I had a child every 2 years. I have 5 now, all down to metformin. If I don't take it, I don't get pregnant. I went from 20 stone to 10 stone. I ate no processed man-made food, full of chemicals and sugar, and it just dropped off me. Now I've established diabetes type 2, the weight is creeping on, so I need to start metformin but will need to use contraception. Never give up xxx"

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "I have always had issues with irregular periods since my first period at 17 years old. I summed it up to my body just being complicated. When I turned 25, my periods started getting farther and farther apart. I'd have a 25-day cycle and then the next would be 90 days. I ended up in the ER with two ruptured cysts and one the size of a baseball. After years of feeling tired all the time and strange hairs on my breasts and random places, I was finally diagnosed with PCOS. I had also been trying to conceive for one year. My doctor started me on metformin 500mg once a day. Just 3 weeks later, I conceived and 9 days after that, I had a positive pregnancy test. After an entire year of trying!!! I feel so much better on this medicine."

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "Metformin works!! After 2 months of taking 500mg a day, I had regular periods. After 6 months of taking 500mg a day, I'm now pregnant. Also, in 5 months, I lost 3 and a 1/2 stone by doing absolutely nothing different except metformin. It reduced PMS symptoms. Yes, sometimes it made me feel queasy, but that was only when I had an empty stomach. My advice to you is to keep going, stop worrying about it, and give it a chance. If you think too much into problems, it usually only makes them worse. Good luck, ladies xx"

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "Started taking Metformin (500mg/day extended release) 4 days ago after being diagnosed with PCOS. Pretty sure I've had it since my teens, but was only diagnosed last week at 28 years old. My last period was months ago, and after just 4 days of Metformin, my period started! Couldn't be happier! I felt the effects almost immediately. My energy is way up, I'm not craving food as much, I seem to feel fuller for much longer. I've had no negative side effects other than a slight dry mouth. Hopefully the weird hair growth will also slow down. Will update as things progress."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I was prescribed metformin 500 mg twice a day. After a week, I looked nine months pregnant from bloating. Also experienced flu-like symptoms: lower intestinal cramping, low backache, stomach pain, fatigue, generally feeling bad, low energy. I quit and went on to try other drugs but could only tolerate Januvia, with moderate success; now insurance won't cover it, and I'm on Basaglar insulin with the only side effect of weight retention/almost impossible to lose. I'm so annoyed that doctors, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists pump up all these drugs and how great they are without telling you about side effects, then show no empathy to you when you tell them you're having them. One provider even asked if I was imagining side effects!"

Metformin for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "I have been using it for 2 months now and it has helped me so much. I have been able to lose weight. Which over the past 4 yrs I have had trainers and everything else anyone tries to lose weight, with very heartbreaking results. This has helped with my moods as well. It hasn't been that long, but I wish this could have been figured out years ago. I've made more progress in 2 months than I have in the past 4 years."

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "Have lost 7 pounds in less than a month of taking metformin for my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Can see the change physically in my face and stomach, as well as been told it by others, and on the scale. My hormones are also regulating themselves (having a period naturally for the first time in forever). Happy and proud of the results. My body has needed this for a long time, in both aspects. I do have diarrhea as a side effect, but I'd rather deal with that and lose weight."

Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes "I changed from regular metformin as I could not tolerate a higher dose, and my A1C was up at 9.7. I have now been on Glumetza for a few weeks, and my readings at home have been much better, with no side effects. I also lost 14 lbs in weight. I believe my A1C will be well below 7.0 in April."

Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes "I had diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and muscle pain. It did not control my blood sugar either. I never want to feel like that again. But, on the other hand, my husband is able to take it with no side effects, and it keeps his blood sugar between 90 and 130."

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "After 6 months of taking the extended-release metformin, my cycle started and has been on point for the past 4 months. My acne has begun to clear, and I feel better. Now, I begin my diet and exercise to drop excess weight. Unfortunately for my hair, what has grown out will not go away, but I was also given spironolactone to prevent any more from growing. Until then, waxing and plucking will work. Hope my review helped!"

For Type 2 Diabetes "I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 6 weeks ago. On Metformin twice a day for 4 weeks, carbs not over 130 per day with meal plan & snacks according to MyPlate guidelines. I keep a daily diary, recording the date & time of meals, content with carb counts. I'm doing this to help me see how what I eat translates to blood glucose levels which I was taking frequently the first two weeks, now once AM fasting. As a 65-year-old woman, VERY obese, never had a high blood sugar until this year. My highest blood sugars were in the 300s and an A1C of 9.8. With changes in diet and Metformin, my last fasting blood sugar was 104. I've lost 20 lbs, with no diarrhea or stomach upsets at all, but dramatic disinterest in eating, portions seem too big now. I sure needed benefits Metformin is giving!"

For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome "I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 13. I haven't had a natural period in years. Five days ago, I started Metformin 500 mg a day, and today 'Aunt Flo' came to town. Not only that, but I also lost 5 lbs in 5 days, and I feel pretty amazing right now. It has been a great week!"

For Type 2 Diabetes "Metformin was recently added to my Type 2 diabetes meds. I take 2000 mg a day in divided doses with each meal. It's rough on the stomach for sure. I'm 62. Seems to keep my sugar levels well controlled, and it helps you lose weight. Get some Zofran from your doctor to help with the nausea. Will update my experience in a few months. God bless."
