"I take one 400 mg pill before bed, and I sleep deeply but only for a few hours. Sometimes I can get back to sleep. However, I do feel well-rested even after 3 or 4 hours only. I also feel a bit weird when I start my day. I don’t like taking more because I will have a difficult time ejaculating. If I take it every night, it doesn’t work as well. My orgasms are more important to me than insomnia. I’m 59 years old, and I have a very stressful life. I do like this medicine because it does make me dream and feel rested."

"Five months ago my husband passed away suddenly. We had been married 52 years and this was right before Christmas. My entire life was turned upside down, I have no family closer than 400 miles away, and from the beginning, I started to have sleep issues. I was able to fall asleep at night but I would hit every morning around 6 a.m., and I was awake. Cortisol levels are out of whack most likely, but I wasn't getting much sleep. And things kept getting worse. The last three days I got absolutely no sleep at all. Due to liver problems, I was unable to take most medications, but in a last-ditch effort, my doctor recommended gabapentin, 100 mg an hour before bed. I took it at 11 p.m., went to bed around midnight, and slept straight through to 9 a.m.! No early morning cortisol rush, just peaceful sleep! I had a hangover this a.m., but I can live with that. Hopefully, this will continue and I can finally feel human again. So for me, it's definitely a five-star rating for gabapentin!"

"This has been very good for sleep combined with a sublingual melatonin. Is anyone else concerned that it's an anti-seizure med or the side effects associated with it? I have both insomnia and anxiety. I also have been taking CBD oil with it during the day for anxiety, which is also supposed to help with sleep. Overall, happy, just worried that long term could have side effects to it."

"This seems to really let me sleep. I now have to wake up by the alarm clock. But I have the most terrible nightmares ever with it. I'm scared to death, but well rested. It takes away my low back pain at night. I just wish it did not give me nightmares."

"I am taking gabapentin for about one month, 300 mg for insomnia. It is a good medication for insomnia, but two nights I have had difficulty sleeping. Maybe I need to increase the dose, I will contact my doctor."

"Great addition to the combo of Dalmane and/or other meds like Remeron that were not keeping me asleep, so I tried it: definitely helped lengthen my hours asleep with little to no side effects that I can point to. Now I use a combo of Dalmane (30 mg), gabapentin (600 mg), and 15 mg Remeron (very careful re: weight gain side effect, gained 20 lbs in short order), dramatically increases your appetite for carbs and sugars and overall appetite (what they don't tell you is that they give this to patients in the hospital who won't eat to increase their appetite)."

"Having had severe insomnia for years, Dr. added Gabapentin with Klonopin. It does help me sleep, but side effects are causing me to have to stop it. The dry mouth has caused cavities and difficulty swallowing due to lack of saliva. Dry mouth has caused multiple problems, but it did help me sleep."

"Gabapentin helps me fall asleep, but I wake up always eight hours after I take it. It makes me feel a little groggy, but I use it for when I get sleepless nights. Fall in love, people, your insomnia will go away. Every time my soulmate is close to me, I sleep like a baby!"

"I had recent foot surgery and experienced nerve discomfort while in the hospital. I was started on Neurontin, which did help my nerve discomfort about 80% and made me very sleepy for the first week. After that, I experienced insomnia, which I found more distressing than the nerve discomfort. I am currently in the process of weaning myself off this med."

"For me, taking 100 mg of gabapentin at bedtime has enabled me to get a good night’s sleep. It was the medicine of last resort to help with insomnia. Other meds would result in dry eyes and/or brain fog."

"I have a long chronic pain history. Degenerative disk disease among other problems. I've been taking Neurontin 600 mg, and after the first three days, I'm now wide awake through most of the night. Maybe getting 4 hrs of sleep in the early morning hours, and my pain has not changed. I wake up feeling a fog, and I stumble around, my eyes can't focus...not sure what to do at this point..."

"I have been taking gabapentin for a while. I started taking it before bed at 11 pm and would wake up twice a night. In the morning, I feel really bad and dizzy and can hardly stand the whole day until evening. It just makes you feel awful all day. I take it every 8 to 10 hours a day but am going to try to wean off it. I don't want to be like this for the rest of my life. It does help a lot for restless leg syndrome. Just don't want to feel like a zombie all day. So glad I don't work anymore. I wouldn't make it."

"I began taking 300 mg gabapentin a few weeks ago for severe insomnia and anxiety disorder. This was prescribed to me as an attempt to wean me off of Xanax, which I had built up a high tolerance to. My doctor suggested to me that I start taking 300 mg at first at night and begin taking it during the day as a way to aid my anxiety. I haven't taken it during the day because of the side effects I am experiencing at night (dizziness and anxiety). Instead of relaxing me, it makes me somewhat anxious and also foggy. I continued taking it only at night, but even hours after taking the drug, I still wouldn't become relaxed enough to fall asleep, and my ruminating thoughts had amplified. My doctor suggested upping my dose to 600 mg before bed, but I am wary of doing this since I had a couple of nights of sleep out of weeks of being on this med, and even on those nights, it took hours until I fell asleep. It leaves me feeling numb the next day, and I have a very hard time concentrating at work."

"Am I ever gonna be able to get off this after I've started taking it? Is my body going to build a tolerance? Will I need to take more? I can't continue to sleep 2 to 3 hours a night raising a 15-year-old nonverbal autistic grandchild. Insomnia just came on in the last month."

"Helps with insomnia if I take it with other sedatives. Initially, I found it very stimulating. I have chronic fatigue syndrome/ME, irritable bowel syndrome-D, depression, and anxiety. I take 500 mg in total throughout the day. My main reason for reporting my experience is that it helps so much with my IBS-D. I have taken many anti-diarrhea medicines with little effect. I can now eat foods that caused cramping and urgent diarrhea. I now also take laxatives every day. I much prefer trying to manage constipation than the uncontrollable urgent diarrhea. The IBS-D has been so crippling, and I have had it for more than 25 years. It started very soon after I had my severe viral infection that caused the CFS/ME."

"I've been taking 300 mg of gabapentin for about two years for insomnia, and it has worked for me very, very well. No side effects, and an excellent night's sleep has become the norm. I also find that I am getting a lot of REM sleep-lots of dreams with no nightmares. Reading about some of the side effects others have experienced, I feel quite fortunate to have a prescription for a sleep aid that works so well for me. This is the generic form of Neurontin, and it is quite inexpensive for a 90-day supply, and my Medicare PDP plan covers all but a very nominal amount. The only downside-the automated systems most doctors use are triggered into classifying me as a 'fall risk,' most likely due to the fact that this drug is routinely prescribed at far higher doses for seizure disorders. My doctor has tried very hard to remove the 'fall risk,' but the automated system keeps inserting it. Very, very irritating. Were I not on Medicare, this might be a problem. So be aware of this flagging issue."

"Ok, I've been taking this for 2-3 months. I take 300mg per night and I think it's starting to lose its effectiveness. I just started to take 400 or 500mg per night because my anxiety has come back. I really can't say if this will work long term. I used to sleep just fine simply on my antidepressant (Lex), but after my recent two episodes of anxiety/depression I needed help sleeping. I do like this much better than other things I've been prescribed in the past like benzos and seroquel (awful). At least gabapentin seems to have less side effects. It might make you a little dizzy, but that only seems to happen in the middle of the night and I don't feel groggy the next day."

"This drug is okay. It doesn't really make you sleepy but it does help me sleep a little. I haven't noticed any side effects from it so that's good. Only thing that I don't like about this drug is that it's controlled in my state and it's hard to get it on time. They aren't open on Sundays so that's been fun. Other than that I have no complaints about it."

"The psychiatrist prescribed 100 mg of gabapentin for insomnia and social anxiety. Weaning off 50 mg of trazodone down to 25 mg, now at zero. Gabapentin dose upped to 200 mg at night. Tremendous nausea and anxiety 13 days in. The doctor believes the side effects are from trazodone and my own anxiety condition. I’m trusting it will take some time to kick in. For now, the doctor will not prescribe anything to go with it, like Ambien, which I asked for. The doctor believes the nausea and vomiting could be from a gastrointestinal problem. I empathize with everyone struggling. It’s been dreadful. Let’s keep taking care of ourselves!"

"Prescribed 300 mg at bedtime for insomnia and pain. However, still taking 200 mg of trazodone and 1 mg of clozepam. New doctor took me off tramadol and a couple of others, so wants to wait a month before any more changes. I do have to discontinue clozepam, but not yet. I am sleeping 12 hours, but rested when I wake up and side effects are better today. Anyone have suggestions so I don't sleep so long?"

"I suffer from insomnia. I have for a few years now, it has been frustrating and challenging, to say the least. I had a nerve pain disorder and was prescribed gabapentin to help calm both my nerves and lower the anxiety related to the discomfort. It lowered my anxiety, but it didn’t do much for the pain, so we upped the dosage, and I was sleeping and feeling rested the next day, it felt like natural sleep. Fast forward, my nerve pain went away, and I asked my doctor if I could stay on the drug for sleep, and he agreed. I take 600 mg daily about 2-3 hours before I want to go to bed, either before a later dinner or an hour after eating. For me, this drug works some of the time. Not all the time. It’s best for me that it’s on an empty stomach. I have no drug interactions and few interactions with alcohol. Sometimes it doesn’t work at all, and I have to still take Ambien (if I drank more than a few and/or had a heavy meal)."

"Tried herbal medications, Z drugs, and then Clonazepam for 10 years for severe insomnia. Nothing seemed to work consistently. After reading some studies, I asked my doctor to prescribe gabapentin. That, together with half a dose of Lunesta, seems to be doing the trick. Getting good 7 hours of sleep and wake up only once a night. The first month or so, I experienced severe grogginess, which seemed to get better. A good large cup of coffee helps. Still trying to figure out how to get rid of Lunesta completely and just survive on gabapentin."

"I struggle with anxiety before bed, restless leg syndrome (RLS), insomnia, and 8-10 vivid and disturbing dreams per night that I can recall. The medications I have tried include trazodone (which caused hallucinations), melatonin (only works sporadically), prazosin (2 mg; initially effective but eventually stopped helping), hydroxyzine (25 mg; made me groggy in the morning and eventually lost effectiveness). I also self-medicated with Benadryl (100 mg for two months; caused hallucinations and I knew it was not good for me), lorazepam (after using it, I wouldn't remember anything from the prior day), and finally gabapentin. I started with 300 mg of gabapentin at night, increased to 600 mg, and eventually settled at 900 mg. It has been tremendously helpful for me. It eases my anxiety before bed, calms my RLS, and makes me feel tired. I still have occasional dreams, but they are not as frequent. If I do have dreams, I typically only remember one or two of them. I don't wake up feeling groggy, and I feel rested about 90% of the time."

"I take phentermine 37.5, and a side effect is horrible insomnia. I went almost a solid two weeks before I called my doctor to help me find something that would keep me sleeping through the night. She gave me GABA. I take it 30 minutes prior to when I want to get to sleep with my 75 mg of topiramate and my spironolactone, and within the hour, I'm out. I'm very sensitive to medication also. But I woke up feeling refreshed and not at all zombie-like. I woke up at 2 a.m. to give my son a bottle and a diaper change, with no problem waking up and going back to sleep. I've only taken this medicine for four nights, but I'm very happy with it so far! As I said, I am very sensitive to medication, so finding one that doesn't make me have lingering side effects is great!"
