"I had been on less strong pills before switching to this one, and I wish I never switched. This pill is absolutely awful. Prolonged bleeding and continuous spotting, terrible. TERRIBLE. Constipation and bloating, and extreme anxiety and depression. Only pro is that my skin has been doing better. I wouldn’t give this pill to my worst enemy."

"I’m 20 and have been taking Nortrel for about 3-4 years now. I have little complaints about this brand of birth control. When I think about it, it definitely modified my personality a little—it is easy for me to be sad or anxious. However, I have had no physical issues with this birth control. I definitely would recommend."

"This is my first birth control pill I've tried, and the first night taking this, I woke up with severe nausea and have been in the bathroom vomiting on and off for 4 hours now. Hopefully, the nausea will go away and the vomiting will subside so the pill can do its job."

"This birth control was awful. While it did its job in ensuring pregnancy prevention, I experienced the worst headaches and cystic acne of my life. Horrible mood swings and painful cramping. Do not take this medication if you have other options."

"I started having panic attacks during the placebo pill week of taking Nortrel 1/35. I am not one to have panic attacks... at all. Just recently, (over a year after the panic attacks started), I realized I was switched to this from my original Necon around the time I started having the attacks. My doctor switched me back to Necon, I took the first pill and the next day... panic attack. I've been reading women say they have panic attacks when they're taking this. Mine is the opposite. I have them when I'm not on it. How weird is that? I'm thinking it's going to take a total readjustment of my body to get over it, but these panic attacks are debilitating. I don't know what to do. I feel so helpless and stuck."

"I'm not pregnant after taking Nortrel 1/35, so that's a plus. I haven't had many of the side effects some others have. I occasionally get nauseous, and I get a pretty annoying headache during the placebo week, but other than that, I have 0 complaints. It's important to remember everyone reacts differently to medications."

"I have been on this for 2 years since I was 18 and have had a great experience. My doctor started me off on Taytulla, and I had so much anxiety from it. It cleared my skin, my boobs did grow a little, and I don’t notice a change in weight gain at all. Protects from pregnancy. I started the pill to help with acne and to help with me being emotional the week before my period, during, and the week after, which left me with one good week out of the month where I wouldn’t cry about everything! It fixed it after a month and my skin after about 2 months. One side effect I noticed was my skin did not tan the same, and I was more prone to burning. Now that it’s been 2 years, this side effect has subsided. But so have its positive effects. I feel like I break out more now than I did in the past 2 years, and that I am starting to be more emotional like I used to be for a longer amount of time around my period. Might just be the point I’m at in life, but figured I’d share!"

"I've been on Nortrel since 2020. I was on no previous birth control, so this is the first and only one I have used. I didn't experience any weight gain, and it has served its purpose. I was with a long-term partner for the first two years I was on it and had no pregnancy scares, and it's been the same in my current relationship. My period is now regular and trackable, and my cramps are still painful but not as bad as before. Before the pill, I had extremely randomized irregular periods and unbearable cramps that were so bad they would make me vomit. I haven't had to worry about that at all since I've been on it. My only complaint is that it has affected my mood. I feel I am much more irritable, and I have battled with feelings of unmotivated and depressed. I can't necessarily say that's completely from the pill, but it absolutely could be a side effect of it. Overall though, it does its job, and I wouldn't switch to anything else."

"I am a 32-year-old female and had a hysterectomy, so I only have my ovaries. Fast forward a couple of years, and I’m moody and having acne on my chin so bad. I was on this birth control as a teen, and it worked great. So I asked my gyno if I could go back on this. I’m on my second month, and my acne has cleared up, and my moods have never been better. Even sleeping better. The only downside I am having is my boobs hurt, and they went from an A cup to almost a C. If they did not hurt, it would be great. I know everyone is different, but this is my experience with Nortrel 1/35. I am going to stay back on this as long as I can. My gyno and I agreed that since I don’t have periods anymore (from my hysterectomy), I only take the yellow hormonal pill. I don’t take the placebo, so every three weeks I start a new pack. I hope this review helps."

"Do not take this!!! I have never had acne in my life, just started taking this. The first day I took this, I was nauseous. Then week two, I started developing cystic acne all over my face. It has also caused insomnia. I’m going to finish the pack and try something else. Ladies, stay away from this pill!!!"

"I have been on Modicon in the past with no side effects except for a little spotting. Went off birth control pills for 6 years. Just started Nortrel, and they said it's generic for Modicon. I only lasted a week and a half on it. I had severe nausea and got acne from it. I stopped taking it for 2 days now, and I got a full-on fake period. Just wanted to let people know about the nausea if they are sensitive to that type of thing."

"Well, when I started this pill, it took 3-4 months to regulate my period, and it worked for about 2-3 months. Then I started missing periods, and it was gone for 2 months. Finally, my period came, but I had it for 2 weeks. So then I start the new pack, I'm good for a week, then I got my period. It lasts for 4 days, then it stops for 5 days. Then it comes back for a full heavy week. It stopped for a couple of days, and then it came back at the homecoming dance. All of this happened before the placebo pills. So currently, I am transitioning to a different one. Also, it made me very irritable and lowered my sex drive by a ton."

"Just like everyone else, I was on Necon for years, no problem whatsoever. I got switched to Nortrel a year ago, I'd say. I was a normal, healthy person until I started this darn pill! The worst part about this pill is the nausea! I get sick almost every single day, vomiting for hours and not being able to sleep due to an upset stomach and taking the pill a few hours prior. It's ridiculous. As for my periods, they're all messed up. I could or could not get it, who knows. For a year now, I've seen doctors thinking it's some type of GI stomach issue. I'm beginning to think it's the stupid pill. I am officially done taking these pills, and if I start getting better, I'm doing something about this as I'm writing to a company. I can see many females' health has been at risk due to this pill, and that is not alright! Nortrel, watch out, your reviews are about to be bad. I've also been experiencing horrible moods, along with depression and twice the anxiety I've ever had, making me feel like I'm unhealthy and insane."

"My doctor prescribed this birth control to help regulate my periods. I started taking this pill on the last day of my period (day 7). The first few days were fine. But on days 5 and 6, I bled heavily and had cramps like a normal period. After that, I spotted every day with cramps and backache. But the worst part is the mood swings and fatigue! I can go from happy and relaxed one minute to angry/irritated/anxious/sad/depressed the next. I just sit and cry. My poor husband gets the brunt of it, but he’s so sweet and understanding, which makes me cry even more. And I feel overwhelmingly tired to the point where my brain is constantly cloudy. My doctor said to give it more time, but I don’t know how much longer I can take this and subject my husband to the mood swings."

"Was on Necon 1/35 for years and never had a problem. Then I moved to a new state at the end of 2017, and Walgreens didn't carry that dosage, they never heard of that dosage... (mind blown)... they gave me Nortrel 1/35 and said it was the same thing. I had mood swings and crying episodes, severe anxiety, and now my son will be 4 years old in a couple of months here, yep, that's right! About one month after taking Nortrel 1/35, I got pregnant and didn't find out until the 3rd month in of taking that pill! Nortrel did not work for anything! We were lied to, y'all! Also! For everyone here... I heard Pirmella is the generic for Necon, and the generic can still be distributed?! Talk with your local pharmacy or doctor to see if that would be the case for you as I have not done much research on this yet!"

"This medication served its purpose, no pregnancy or pregnancy scares. Yet, periods seem to be an extreme hormonal withdrawal and a terrible emotional state for me. My period was very regular and light, but the emotional instability I felt for days during my period was pretty rough. Other than that one issue, I’d recommend Nortrel 1/35. I’m switching to a copper IUD to hopefully steer clear of synthetic hormones to try and avoid the withdrawals. Being close to natural always feels best, ladies. Best of luck!"

"It was an awful experience, mood swings, weight gain, and I had cystic acne, which developed within the first month of taking it. It ended up ruining the skin on my face. I have huge scars, the dermatologist is helping me remove them, but it scared me for life. Do not take."

"I am 18 years old and recently started taking this birth control. My doctor told me I would see results in two weeks, and I’m now on week 3, and nothing has changed. My acne actually got worse, and the main reason my mom had me start this pill was to clear up my acne she’s been complaining about. I know it’s early, but I’m getting really frustrated that things are getting worse, and these reviews aren’t helping. I’m open to hearing someone’s thoughts about this."

"I started Nortrel about three months ago and have gained 30 pounds, completely lost my appetite, and also restart my period the second I stop taking my pills at the exact same time. I was on Marlissa before this, and while it gave me more anxiety, it was nowhere near as bad as Nortrel."

"I've been on this pill for 9 years and started looking on this page because I was told I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a heart murmur, and possibly lymphoma. I was just interested in the side effects. I don't know that my birth control has caused it, but I'm healthy and 29. I eat healthy and exercise. My current weight is 101. I've never had weight issues with the pill and never had bad cramps. Periods have always been easy. I do get a full period if I miss just one pill, which I'm hearing isn't normal, but it's what my body does. Overall, I have been satisfied with this pill, just wondering now what long-term effects could be."

"So far, I haven't really had issues with this birth control yet, and I have been using it for 3 months. The main issue I had is that it made my back break out more than usual, but it seems like it's getting better now. I take it at night, so it doesn't make me have any nausea. My periods are still not regulated normally with it yet, but I have noticed they have gotten lighter, yet, they are still painful."

"I have not had a good experience with this brand. Like others, I used to take Necon, which I liked, then got switched to this brand. Since the switch, I have noticed an increase in anxiety and mild depression. I am a teacher, so that comes with enough stress. This medication seemed to worsen it. I have never experienced such high levels of anxiety. After reading the reviews of this medication, I see now how it can affect some people. I am not going to continue with this brand."

"Like most, I was taking Necon, which was discontinued, so Nortrel was/is its replacement. Nortrel has been the worst experience ever, especially days before and during my cycle. Per my experience (migraines, nausea, and stomach cramps that feel like something is ripping it apart), all of which I didn't experience before, I don't think this drug is safe. I don't have cysts, but the side effects of this drug are sure to cause some problems. I've decided to have my doctor change my prescription."

"So my OB just started me on this medication because I have ovarian cysts. I've had birth control in the past, and I've never felt any side effects, unlike Nortrel. I've had the WORST nausea ever. Keep in mind I'm in my first week on this medication. I couldn't find the reason for what was causing the nausea until I looked up the medication, and BAM! Sure enough, it's this damn medication that's making me feel this way. I already suffer from anxiety/depression as it is, but with this medication, it's 10x worse. Low sex drive. I cannot wait until my doctor's office opens so I can call and let them know, hopefully, they will change it. Overall, SUCH A HORRIBLE MEDICATION. Do not take if you are very sensitive."

"I have been on this pill for only 4 days, and I can't stress enough... DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL. I used to take Necon and had a really great experience. However, my insurance switched me to Nortrel, and I seriously wish I had read reviews before starting it. I am having constant stomach pain and mood swings. I already suffer from anxiety, and somehow this medication has made it SO much worse. I am going from nervous to happy to depressed within a matter of minutes. This stuff is horrible, and I am switching ASAP. Be warned, ladies."
