Reviews for Ethinyl estradiol / etonogestrel

EluRyng (ethinyl estradiol / etonogestrel): “I used nuvaring for 12 years. I used for an entire month, then replaced it with a new ring. This way I wouldn't have periods. I was prescribed this because of heavy bleeding and severe cramping. In January, a generic came out and I started using the prasco brand intravaginal ring. The first three months a bled almost continuously. I still bleed approximately two weeks out of every month. This generic is NOT the same”

“So, I am glad that I found this thread of reviews. I have been on the name brand Nuvaring since I was 17, and I am 21, going on 22 now. Initially adjusting to the Nuvaring was hard (cystic breakouts and such), but after 3 months my body adjusted. My acne cleared, peach fuzz grew less, mood swings, and sleeping habits were under control. I was switched to the generic this year, and initially I thought it was the switch from my Vyvanse to Adderall, but I have noticed my cystic acne coming back. My mood swings have been awful, and I cannot sleep. They say the generic is always the same as the original, but I believe this ring is new so I highly doubt that. It’s comforting, but also disheartening that other women are experiencing this as well!! Hopefully they is a way for our doctors to be able to demand the original from our insurance because this stuff is awful.”

“I have had the same experience with the generic nuvaring that everyone else has described here, with excessive random bleeding throughout the month and I am so over it. This is 100% NOT WORTH IT! I have no idea what the difference is between the brand and generic, since all information on the internet claims they contain the same things... but CLEARLY they are not the same. I never EVER had a problem on the Nuvaring before I started the generic. It has been 4 months and I'm just catching on now (definitely wish I had googled this after month 1). I am totally switching back to the brand name, ASAP.”

“Went on Nuvaring at the beginning of this year, after being on Skyla. I had used NuvaRing before and didn't have a ton of issues, switched to IUD because I wanted to try not having to switch things out or take pills. Since the switch to brand, things were going fine and dandy. Then my insurance forced a switch to generic. Well now have absolutely terrible periods! The first period after the switch went two weeks! With cramps and mood swings the entire time. Then I got a break for a week and a half, and it's back. I am done. I took it out because my natural cycle probably less chaotic than this.”

“Endometriosis- After a year and a half of trying different birth controls I landed on the nuvaring. It’s the only birth control my body would absorb / made my periods manageable. My pharmacy switched me from the nuvaring to this generic brand, and wouldn’t acknowledge there was a difference. I called and complained, they insisted there was no difference. After months of silently suffering I finally called my GYNO and explained as soon as I put it in I start bleeding and cramping for months. I spent months on my period convinced my endometriosis had advanced when in actuality, my health insurance didn’t want to pay for a “name brand” birth control that helped me. Oh, and they used to cover it with a $50 co-pay. Which I would HAPPILY pay instead of using this garbage. DO NOT USE THIS BIRTH CONTROL. I’m so happy to have found this page as confirmation that this is not the same as the nuvaring.”

“I have spent eight months of 2020 in utter discomfort from the Prasco ring. I was on the brand name NuvaRing from Feb 2019-Feb 2020, for severe endometriosis. I loved NuvaRing; my sex drive, natural lubrication, & periods were great, w/ no negative side effects. I had an active sex life(daily, 1-3x/day)with the NuvaRing. In Feb 2020, I was given the Prasco generic ring instead. Suffice it to say, I was only attempting painful sex at most once a month, having to stop within the 1st minute or 2. With the Prasco ring, I experienced sharp uterine cramping, cramping with arousal, vaginal dryness & irritation, a Pap smear showing granulation tissue, and my vagina either felt like stabbing, broken glass, or burning w/ penetration. I was on the Prasco ring for 5 1/2 months. I got on the pill for 2 1/2 months, & all symptoms have gone away except for some burning and pain w/ penetrative sex. I'm concerned about how long it will take for my vagina to return to normal. I do not recommend the Prasco ring.”

“My insurance only covers generic now and I am still on my cycle going on 2 weeks after applying a new ring, I wish Insurance didn't make decisions for you. Generic does not work for me at all, constant heavy bleeding and cramps is all I got from it and never had any issues using brand.”

“I have been on the NuvaRing since I was 17 (now 26). This past year I started getting the generic because of insurance changes and now the last 4 months I have started my period a full week early with the ring still in. My OBGYN assistant thinks I am just readjusting, but I am ready to request name brand! Not enjoying the unexpected surprises each and every month. Plus side, I'm not pregnant...but it makes me nervous that it isn't working correctly if I am starting my period early.”

“Bad experience here. Started taking it to control my endometriosis... after I started it I become very emotional, my MDD and Anxiety went through the roof . My depression hit rock bottom and I had no idea it was a side affect with the nuva ring ... bad cramps feel icky all the time back on the pill and I feel so much better already.”

“I'm currently on the Mirena and have been for the last 7 years. My doctor prescribed the Nuvaring it for ovarian cyst suppression. My sex drive went from very high to non-existent. I took it out this morning.”

“I used NuvaRing in response to not having a period for three months, having horrible constant cramps, PMS like moods that never stopped. Before NuvaRing I was not on birth control. Two or three days after inserting NuvaRing I developed hideous acne on my previously perfect skin and felt extremely dizzy and a little nauseous. I immediately removed it without consulting my gyno. My periods returned with me now using super plus tampons instead of super. I got tired of looking at all the blood. Cramps improved mildly. My mood was still off. I went to a clinic months later and they informed me that NuvaRing produced blood clots. I was instructed to take aspirin to thin my blood and couldn't so took Tylenol instead.”

“I have had a heavy and unpleasant cycle since I started menstruating when I was 13. I would be incapacitated for up to three days because of cramps and weakness. I tried a few other hormone control solutions but these had unwanted side effects such as nausea and weight-gain. The NuvaRing hasn't given me any side effects and I have been prescribed for a few years now. It is convenient, and as a college student I would rather take this than trying to remember to take a pill. I would say my experience with NuvaRing has been a positive one.”

“So I'm updating my two reviews for the Generic Nuva Ring I had put on here a few months ago. I'm now at three months and I look like I'm a month pregnant. I've also been bleeding for two weeks straight, I think it's finally subsiding. I took the ring out cause I was tired of feeling like rubbish and I know the REAL Nuvaring is on the way. The ring was dark red from the whole time I had been bleeding. I will never use another generic form of birth control. I never had any problems using Nuvaring, being without health insurance and saving a few dollars has been bad for my health. I will have health insurance by next month but I am willing to pay $700s for the real ring brand until then. My moods were interesting I started getting incredibly sad crying at everything, Since it's been out for 10 mins I'm already starting to feel a little better.”

“After I had a reaction to Marvelon, my gyn gave me this saying that I would have a continuous supply of hormones never dropping. No mood swings or panic attacks like on Marvelon but instead I got really bad vaginal pain. I had swollen up to the point that I couldn't put tampons in during that period. Needless to say if your allergic to latex and other plastics this might not be the method for you.”
