"Took doxy for 8 months after a round of IV antibiotics for 8 weeks after a bad prosthetic joint infection. I didn’t really have much problem with it that time, except for bad sun sensitivity, I would burn quickly. After the 8 months, my infectious disease (ID) doctor said it was clear to stop it. Well, 10 days after stopping it, I was in the ER with sepsis in my hip. Long story short, after being in the hospital for a while and another 6 weeks of IV antibiotics, I was put back on doxycycline. Again, this time I will be on it or an equivalent for life. But this round of it has made me very nauseous, bloated, and vomit easily. Tried everything I can think of doing for the sickness. Dramamine helps, though. Still, for me, I can’t stop it for now, hopefully, I can get the ID doctor to prescribe something easier on me, if there is. But it’s better than the alternative."

"Was given this doxycycline for cellulitis in my leg, (4th time I've had cellulitis in the same area). I had various side effects, i.e., headache, stomach cramps, metallic and bitter taste, (like radiotherapy!) vertigo, and it didn't get rid of the cellulitis. Had to have a further course of another antibiotic. Side effects settled down after 5 days, course was for 7 days. There was some improvement after 5 days but no cure of the condition. One can only speak as one finds."

"At her dermatologist's suggestion, I have been giving my wife, who has dementia, this product for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, she manifested serious side effects. Feeding her 2 times a day went from half an hour to 2-3 hours for each meal. She also became very sleepy during the day and required two naps a day of two hours. Fortunately, I have two live-in nurses to care for her as feeding her became a full-time job. While we still go out for half-hour walks every day, since going on doxy, she is very tired when we return and has to go to sleep by 8:00 PM. I can no longer read to her or watch TV. I have cut back to 1 tab a day with omeprazole 40 mg until the doctor calls me back with a different antibiotic. I will provide more details soon."

"I will never, ever take this medication again. When I took my very first pill, it caused me to throw up within a matter of minutes. I called the doctor, and they told me to try it again in the morning, and if I still threw up, then to call them back. So I tried it again in the morning, and this time I didn't throw up, but I became extremely nauseous and nearly threw up, so I called the doctor back. They ended up prescribing a different medicine for me. I also didn't like the fact that I had to wait 2 hours after taking vitamins and minerals and so many hours before taking certain kinds of stomach medicine. I am prescribed both vitamins and minerals as well as stomach medicines, so this made taking the doxycycline quite a burden."

"My Dr. prescribed doxycycline 100 mg for 20 days, twice a day, for self-diagnosed peri-oral dermatitis. My Dr. says it’s rosacea, but either way, the doxycycline worked well. I tried EVERY cream, salve, and lotion on the market, and it did nothing. It does cause me horrible stomach upset unless I eat at the moment I swallow the pill. Usually, 2-3 pieces of toast do the trick. The treatment works within just 3 or so days, but I continue the course as directed. It does come back, though. This time, I made it 8 months between treatments, and the breakout lessens each time. I hope one day it will work for good. It flares up especially in the winter and with daily mask usage at work. Doxycycline is the only treatment that has worked so far, even though the result is somewhat temporary. I’ll take it regardless just to clear up my face!"

"I took 2 doses. The first had no side effects. The second brought extreme nausea. It's the first time I vomited in 30+ years, including when I had food poisoning. This was followed by dizziness and headache, though those could have been from all the retching. I discontinued it."

"I have major cellulitis in both legs. I have been on many antibiotics, both IV and oral. This is the only medication that has shown a longer-term improvement. The swelling, redness, and open wounds are noticeably better. I take 100 mg in the A.M. and 100 mg in the P.M. I have been on doxycycline for several months. My legs have improved immensely! Do not recline or lay down for at least an hour after taking doxycycline. I have an occasional upset stomach, but I now take it with a meal and have fewer problems. Drink plenty of fluids. Also, I have gained some weight. Overall, I am very satisfied with the medication. I have not been hospitalized with my legs since starting this medication! I give it a 10 out of 10!"

"I was prescribed this medicine for a skin infection caused by MRSA. Yesterday was my 4th day of taking the capsule, and within minutes, I was retching my guts out. I am a cancer survivor, and even with aggressive chemo, I never threw up! I also experienced extreme loud ringing in my ears for several minutes. And I notice that I feel very tired on this drug. Well, that's enough for me... I'm out!!!"

"After 5 years of specialists and numerous treatments, I was prescribed Acticlate, which was a miracle drug. Without insurance, it went up to over $1,000. I tried the cheaper Dava brand doxy-hycl, and it is useless. My condition is 4x worse than without any drug at all. Why can those of us who want real medicine have to pay a week's salary to get it?"

"I had the first course of eight tablets at a dose of 100 mg per day. That did not clear up the redness and pain from my little toe below the nail. So, I got a further 8 x 100 mg today by prescription. It is a bit easier but not sorted yet. Hope the second course clears it up. I am using Brulidine cream also."

"I am taking doxy (capsules) along with clarithromycin for almost 2 months now because of a skin infection. The first day I took the cocktail (had to take both twice a day), I got a headache so strong that I couldn’t put my head on the pillow. I asked the dr, and [s]he told me to take the doxy alone to see if there were any changes. As I started to take it alone, I did not feel the headaches anymore, so I incorporated the clarithromycin but with a two-hour difference. In my second month, the pharmacist gave me tablets instead of capsules, and I cannot stand them! Not alone or with the clarithromycin whatsoever. Headaches are horrible! Stop taking them. I’m not really sure if it was because of the change from capsules to tablets, though."

"I was prescribed this after my other antibiotics didn’t fully clear my sinus infection. Because of my first antibiotic, I ended up getting fluid in my ear, causing vertigo and was prescribed this. Every time I take this, I instantly feel like vomiting. I have taken it with and without food and still feel horrible nausea and vomiting right after. After I vomit, I feel fine. This is the only antibiotics I have taken that makes me vomit, though it is one of the most common side effects. I can’t wait to get done with this round of antibiotics and hopefully it clears up my ear."

"Took a 7-day course for an infection I got on the outside of my nose after having a nose vein removal by laser (tech didn't do it right, resulting in 4 ulcers-never go to anyone but an M.D.! Lesson learned). I was very hesitant to take this due to all the risks and reviews, but I'm so glad I did. My nose has almost completely cleared in the 7 days of dosing. The only side effect I had was a headache. I took it religiously with 2 pieces of toast or a PB&J, and never laid down for an hour after taking. No stomach issues at all. I'm super grateful for this drug and very happy I stuck with it! The only reason I rated it an 8 is because of the headaches, which were more of a nuisance than anything. But also because I had to avoid calcium (per the insert), and this meant skipping vitamins because I'd forget to take them in the middle of the day. But I guess this is my problem, not doxy :)"

"I’ve been on 100 mg of doxycycline a day for almost 30 days now, it’s for perioral dermatitis, which was not going away. I take it right after dinner every night, drink lots of water before bed, and also eat yogurt with added probiotics every morning. I’m constantly nauseous and almost always have a mild headache, unfortunately, but PD is such a nightmare I will continue taking doxycycline until I’m out. I almost forgot to take a pill one night, so I had it right before bed, and what a big mistake! I had heartburn for 24 hrs afterward and was more nauseous and had a worse headache. So be careful! I can’t imagine taking this on an empty stomach. My skin currently looks amazing, so hopefully, my PD stays away after this, I sure don’t want to feel this awful for a month again."

"I was on doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 2 months for perioral dermatitis. During this time, I had horrible burning skin on my face and scalp. I also was very sensitive to sunlight and had bad nausea after taking it for an hour. It did clear my perioral dermatitis, though. 3 months later, my hair started coming out. I do not recommend this antibiotic if you can avoid it. It has caused many issues for me."

"I have been suffering from thinning hair and hair loss for quite some time now. The hair in my crown constantly feels throbbing, sensitive to the touch, and numb. A very specific area of my scalp and not its entirety. The hairs in this space are weak, limp, and thin. All other scalp is thick and full. I've been going to two different dermatologists for two years and have been on a regimen of drugs. For the hair that I have, I believe these medications have contributed to the health and thickness, but in the area of my trouble, it has done nothing. Still a constant sensitive numbing sensation. After some extensive research, I have determined that I have frontal fibrosing alopecia and learned that doxycycline was used to treat it. I was able to make some calls and got the medication. From one pill, my scalp felt instant relief. I've taken my second pill - no more throb, numbness, or sensitivity. I just can't believe it!"

"I’m not sure what to think of this drug. I have reoccurring bouts of perioral dermatitis and the 1st time I was prescribed doxycycline 2 times a day for 10 days, then 1 a day for 30 days. Right from the start, I was nauseous and had to have it with food. I suffered through the side effects of a red, puffy face if I had a glass of wine, and it pretty much went away for about 3 years. Now it’s back, and it took me 4 months just to get the courage to do this whole thing again. I’m on day 7 and had to take an antihistamine yesterday as I guess I was out in the sun too long…. Sometimes I just think it would be easier to live with the red rash around my nose…"

"I've been on this med for 5 weeks now for a post-surgical preventative as part of my incision line is not closing and is draining - tried it with and without food - no difference in decreasing the nausea. Finally asked the doc for zofran based on a consult with my pharmacist. This has eliminated the nausea and vomiting. Looking forward to being off this as I'm contributing my fatigue and lightheadedness to this med."

"I took the medicine doxycycline for 3 days and could not handle the side effects of weight gain. The scale started moving upward immediately, and I was not eating any differently. My digestive tract slowed down. It reduced the boil I had on my skin, but I stopped taking it and asked my doctor to switch my antibiotic. I now am prescribed cefuroxime."

"I took doxycycline in March 2021. It cleared up my urinary tract infection with no problems. I took it again in July 2021 and noticed I had a headache. I did not attribute it to the doxycycline, so I can continue to take it. Now, in October 2021, I am taking it again for a surgical wound infection. Within 3 days, I have the worst headache I've ever had in my life. Severe sinus pressure and eye pressure. I have double vision, and my right eye doesn't follow my left eye. I've been on doxycycline for 4 days, and now I'm done. This medication is horrible. Being on this medication three separate times in the last 8 months has done something horrible to my eyesight. Please be cautious and aware when taking this medication."
