Doxepin for Insomnia "Tonight will be my fourth time taking Silenor. The last few nights, I have not had a solid sleep. No problem falling asleep, but staying asleep is still impossible. The first two nights, I had very lucid dreams, waking up only after a couple of hours as I normally do. I'm only taking 3 mg, kind of scared to take 6 mg. I've taken many other types of sleeping pills, and so far, none of them work. I'd give anything for a solid 6-8 hours."

For Anxiety "I started on doxepin 75 mg 15 days ago. I have noticed a decrease in my anxiety, excitability, and obsessive thinking and thoughts. I used to have a problem sleeping. Not anymore!! I am asleep in about 20 minutes, and I stay asleep. I used to be such a light sleeper and never got more than 5 hours of sleep. I used to take Gabapentin for nerve pain. However, I haven’t needed it since taking doxepin. I noticed it also takes my appetite away. Now for the horrible side effects... I have to force myself up. It takes me a few hours to fully be awake. I was in a horrible brain fog for the first 10 days. The first four days I felt like I had the flu. Now I am still dealing with the tiredness. I don’t want to stop it. However, I will if the tiredness doesn’t subside. I am glad I have had no headaches on the medicine, as other meds have given me."

For Urticaria "Doxepin is a godsend for hives. But I have found several drawbacks to it. First, drowsiness. You need to take it before you go to bed. Probably even just slightly after dinner. Even then, you will find yourself sluggish in the morning. Second, since it is an antidepressant, I tend to develop an 'I don’t care' attitude with it. My personality is to be that way normally, and this exacerbates it. It isn't necessarily bad, just something to be aware of. Finally, I find it inhibits weight loss. It doesn't necessarily cause weight gain, but it causes me to sweat less when exercising. When I get off it, I tend to lose weight pretty rapidly. But all the side effects are worth it to be hive-free."

Doxepin for Insomnia "I was on Ambien for years. It worked great, but at the time I wanted to get off controlled medications. With Silenor, I actually had no problem falling asleep. Couldn't believe it worked. I've tried about every OTC sleep aid and one non-controlled sleep aid (Belsomra). OTCs did nothing, and the Belsomra I threw in the trash after the first night taking it. I only recommend it if you like feeling drugged and anxious all night. Also, it gave me extreme light sensitivity where I couldn't look at my nightlight. So, in all, Silenor was great to help me sleep."

For Insomnia "After the doctor tried other pills on me for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia with horrible nightmares, he decided to try 100 mg of Doxepin in the evenings, saying it was an older pill not used as much anymore. My body is resistant to medications and requires high doses of meds in order to notice any effects. It's hard for them to knock me out for surgery and keep me knocked out. But so far (it's only been about a week), the Doxepin has been working great at making me sleep. It takes several hours to knock me out, but when it does, I'm out without waking up every 10 minutes in misery with nightmares and physical pain. I tend to be groggy in the mornings, though. I hope my body doesn't grow resistant to it."

For Anxiety "I developed Tardive Akathisia from the antidepressant, Amoxapine. It was the most horrible feeling I could ever imagine! It is not a natural feeling. It feels like you are jumping out of your skin, with extreme fear and dread, like everyone on earth had died. For two years, I was given many different medications and none of them worked. Some made me way worse. I was losing weight and had a hard time eating and sleeping. I found a better psychiatrist and was put on Doxepin. I immediately felt relief! After three days, I was completely back to normal. That was 1988 and I was put on 150 mg before bed. It got rid of my insomnia and seizures also! I am on the same dose since 1988 and it has given me a wonderful life. I tried to gradually get off of the Doxepin, twice, but I went back to the same horrible symptoms. I have permanent Tardive Akathisia. I am SO grateful for the Doxepin!!"

For Insomnia "I have sleep maintenance insomnia/early awakenings (no trouble falling asleep in the first place, but a world of hurt trying to stay asleep after 4 or 5 hours). Doxepin worked like a dream for about three months - good (7 hours) sleep, no side effects - then zilch, nothing, back to the bad old days, even if I took ten times the dose. If you have mild/moderate insomnia, this should work for a while, but don't bank on it long term. Cheap too as a generic."

For Insomnia "I was put on many different sleep medications before doxepin, and nothing worked for how bad my insomnia is. My doctor had to put me on 30 mg of it just to get it to work at all. But once we got the dosage right, it works perfectly. Puts me to sleep in 10 to 15 minutes. Other people freak out with my high dosage, but if it works, it works. The only downside for me was when I take it, I have to sleep for 8 hours or more, my body literally will not wake up otherwise. Whenever I did manage to wake myself up before 8 hours, I always ended up falling asleep while I was doing something."

For Insomnia "I've had sleep issues for years, and after having multiple sleep studies done, as well as nasal surgery to fix my deviated septum, I tried a dental sleep appliance and a CPAP machine, and nothing worked. I was finally given doxepin - OMG, LIFESAVER... 6 drops per night, and I am out like a light, I wake up around 5 hours later but refreshed and not tired. However, if I go off routine, as in different time zones or late nights, it does take a while to get back on track... I'd be in a mental health institution if I hadn't found this, as I was at the end of my rope and couldn't cope anymore being constantly exhausted."

Doxepin for Insomnia "Been using it for about 5 months, and it has been a miracle worker until recently. A few weeks ago, started having random sleepless nights. This week has been terrible, waking up after 3-4 hours and feeling wide awake. Not sure if my body is getting used to it, but I thought I'd check the reviews to see if anyone else has had the same problem. I hope this is a fluke because Silenor really had changed my life, and even though it was expensive, it was worth being able to function the next day."

Doxepin for Insomnia "I was prescribed Silenor for insomnia, which I battled with for 3 years. I was taking a high dose of Melatonin to sleep, but that stopped working when I was going through a stressful period. Took 3 mg of Silenor the first night. Although I slept 5-6 hours, I felt horrible the next day. I felt like crying all day. I increased the dose to 4.5 mg and was able to get 7 hours of sleep, but the negative mood became more prominent during the day. I was depressed and miserable. I stuck with it for 2 weeks, but my mood was getting worse. I couldn't keep on taking it. I don't know if these are only initial side effects that will go away after a month or so, but I personally could not handle the depressive symptoms (major) it gave me, so I decided to stop it after 2 weeks only. I felt better immediately, even though I am still struggling with sleep... I have to see my doctor and try Trazodone."

For Insomnia "I've been taking 100 mg at night for insomnia/anxiety for approximately 1 1/2 years! I love it! I take it about 30-45 minutes before bed and BAM, I'm out! The only side effect I've noticed is talking in my sleep (nothing major though)! I would highly recommend this medication for insomnia."

For Insomnia "Doxepin for sleep? My new psychiatrist has prescribed this drug. New because my previous doctor passed away. That man was a godsend for years and years to me. I don't sleep but 4 or 5 hours a night, broken up 2 hours at a time. But doxepin? Seriously? Is this some kind of cruel joke? Can anyone hear me? I cannot sleep!!! Here I am right now 2:12 AM. Perhaps next he will add melatonin, a warm glass of milk, and journaling before bed... lol. Maybe yoga, chanting, and acupuncture. I give up. It has been 47 days now on this drug. My last night of this ridiculousness."

For Anxiety "My doctor prescribed me Doxepin 10 mg for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. So far so good, calms me down wonderfully when my three kids or my husband cause me to have an anxiety attack, and is working well with my depression. Only things it isn't doing too much for my insomnia, I still go to bed at about 9 pm and fall asleep around 2:30-3:00 am. I have also taken Lexapro, which worsened my depression, Zoloft just made me feel like a zombie or like I was wired out of my mind, and Prozac, which worked great on me, but since I have insomnia my doctor gave me Doxepin."

For Anxiety "Was on Doxepin many years ago and did not have one anxiety attack or panic attack at night when they mostly happened. Then I went off it. Today, I am back on it, 25 mg at night. I do not know why my doctor took me off it. I am now back on it, so here's hoping. Will let you know how things go."

For Insomnia "Started dose of doxepin was 10 mg for insomnia. Slept some but definitely not enough. Moved dose up to 20 mg, and I’ve done well thus far with few awakenings. I'm off Xanax after 15 years. Finding anything to help me sleep has been a huge challenge. Try this. Get doxepin generic, not the name brand, or you will pay $$$$$."

Doxepin for Insomnia "Silenor works very well, keeping me asleep longer than usual. I normally wake up 3-4 times a night without it. But I have extreme dizziness and headaches the next day. I think I'll go back on my Lunesta because I have trouble functioning the day after Silenor. It is a great medicine, but I'm not sure if it's for me."

For Anxiety "I have been taking Doxepin for 26 years to treat depression and acute anxiety. It has worked well and enabled me to feel normal and lead a normal life. Recently, though, it has stopped working as well, and I am having panic attacks and anxiety again. I think I have become immune to it because of taking it for so long. Would like to switch to a newer drug, but my doctor is not keen to swap me."

For Anxiety "This drug was terrible. I would take it at night and fall right to sleep, and when I got up in the morning, I'm completely exhausted and dizzy. My balance is off and I feel like I'm in a daze. I was extremely irritable. The entire day I was depressed and in a very, very bad mood. Everything bothered me. My anxiety was terrible. Tremors in my hands and just feeling kind of loopy. Nightmares when sleeping. This drug did nothing of any benefit for me. I was taking it to help with my social anxiety and panic attacks."

For Insomnia "I'm a 68-year-old female who falls asleep easily but has difficulty staying asleep. The doctor prescribed 10 mg Doxepin, which helped with staying asleep all too well. I had trouble waking up at the usual time. Insurance won’t pay for a lower dosage, so I cut 10 mg capsules, which always results in losing some medicine, but the slightly less than 5 mg works great and reduces cost too. No ill effects at this dosage."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have had IBS-D my entire life. Would get extremely sick as a kid and lose a lot of weight in short periods of time. The pain is sometimes unbearable at times. Nothing helped but to not eat for a few days. I've tried lots of different meds. Was put on this one for insomnia and wham, it fixed my IBS in one dose. 10 mg dose. I now poop like a normal person and can go out and not worry about where the bathroom is all the time."

Doxepin for Insomnia "I tried both the 3 mg and the 6 mg to try to sleep, and they did nothing for me. I didn’t feel anything, and I still had a hard time falling and staying asleep. I didn’t have any side effects, but also no sleep. My doctor gave me samples of the medicine to try, so I thought I’d give it a hopeful shot, but it just didn’t do anything for me."
