Docusate for Constipation "I was told to take Colace following surgery because medications used during surgery would slow down my regular eliminations. Also, I was very nervous the day before and had diarrhea until there was nothing left. I was given Colace during my stay. At discharge on Friday, they said if I hadn’t passed a stool by Sunday to call. Saturday night, my efforts were rewarded painlessly. I have been regular and pain-free since then, taking 100 mg three times a day. It’s Thursday night, and I plan to take 1 a day for the next few days unless I’m given different instructions at my doctor visit Monday."

For Constipation "Found the 100 mg docusate pills effective. The liquid form, even dispersed in fluids, has a mawkish taste and an irritation in the throat that almost borders on injury, like you got a snootful of too-hot coffee through a straw. I did, in fact, take it through a straw to keep as much of it out of my mouth as possible. The liquid form was also ridiculously more expensive/mg than the capsules. I don't take it for constipation, but to soften stools, which it's very good at and doesn't have the gassy effect of polyethylene glycol types."

For Constipation "I was given this medication to prevent constipation after surgery even though I have IBS and was previously taking Linzess (which was very unpleasant, causing severe cramping before release, but that was my life with IBS)."

Docusate for Constipation "Taking one pill at night gave me a bowel movement the next morning. I did this for three days. I was having a rectum itch also. The afternoon on my third day, I had an uncontrollable bowel movement. It came quickly and was not diarrhea. It was a normal bowel movement. Couldn’t get to the bathroom in time. Big mess. Now I’m scared to use it again."

For Constipation "Tried different stool softeners like powder CosmaCol but not very effective. GP now gave me Docusate 100MG capsules. I take one at night and one in the morning or afternoon, and it makes me able to 'go' 2-4 hours later. Not as 'smooth' as CosmaCol but so far, more effective, so we'll see how it goes. Being bunged-up is horrible, but other drugs I have to take probably cause the constipation in the first place!"

For Constipation "I get constipation and hard stools from my period almost every single cycle, but this stuff always works super quick. I eat plenty of fiber as is, so more fiber doesn't help, and glycerin suppositories are just uncomfortable, especially when wearing a tampon...!! Docusate always works within 10-15 minutes for me. I always drink it with some milk because I have lactose intolerance, it always clears me right up."

For Constipation "I have to admit that I've never really had the ability to recognize the right sensations as to when to go for a bm. It started when I was a toddler because I remember how the pain in my rectum had scared me off from going to the toilet for a bm, so obviously that's carried on right through my adult life too. It was the pain level that put me off. I resorted to holding back going to the toilet to do a bm for as many weeks as I could through fear of having to go through the pain again on the toilet. This then spiraled out of control, and I always ended up in the hospital because of holding it in for too many weeks at a time. Never do what I did. I know it hurts a little when we get that gnarly pain in our back passage, but it's not worth holding it in like I used to. A pain for ten seconds is better than being so severely backed up with pooh that you need hospital treatment. I can't praise Docusate enough. It's the only laxative that has helped me be in less pain."

"Gelcaps with 100 mg of docusate were prescribed after prostate surgery as a stool softener. I take one docusate gelcap with half of a bran muffin and half of a 6 oz can of prune juice after the evening meal, as opposed to any dessert. In the morning, I take the other half of the can of prune juice, pour it into hot coffee, and eat the other half of the bran muffin. Works wonders in a few minutes as a stool softener at the expense of the hot coffee, which tastes funny and smells awful!"

For Constipation "Wow! This stuff is a godsend. I had been backed up for 6 days. My last BM before this had been after 5 days of nothing and was probably the most painful thing I have ever experienced. So, fearing going through that again, I decided it was time to try a stool softener. I am so glad I did! Last night, I took one 100mg softgel. It didn’t do much, but things were definitely starting to move as I was finally able to at least pass gas. Come today, I took two more softgels (100mg) and a miracle happened! I have had 3 very satisfying BMs today. I will add, copious amounts of water/fluids will be your best friend here. I also had a glass of prune juice today, and began taking probiotics yesterday. There was no straining necessary at all with my poops, and they were mostly pain-free! Minimal side effects, aside from some gas and mild cramping. Which totally could just be the prune juice, not sure. Either way, this stuff is a lifesaver!"
