For Gout, Acute "Had gout for the last 20 plus years and found a way to handle it with 100 mg allopurinol and 1 mg colchicine. Had a couple of flares due to crazy off-diet meals, but uric acid level has been within range and all was under control till I realized that I was taking colchicine for over 20 years!! So I stopped the colchicine and sure enough, within one week I had an attack. Bottom line, the solution to my gout is an extended usage of colchicine. How bad is this?"

For Gout, Acute "Had gout in wrist and knee, 5 days on naproxen hadn't shifted it. Blood showed uric acid as normal, so got sent to the emergency room. After X-rays and more blood tests, the doctor decided it was gout and prescribed 3 days of colchicine. Apparently, it works best at the start of an attack, so might be wrongly prescribed. My experience was both feet got gout, with no easing of pain in other joints while taking it. I got the well-known side effect, but the effect on the gout was worse than neutral."

For Gout, Acute "Colchicine was very effective in relieving my symptoms the next day. Unfortunately, the drug made me very ill. Violent vomiting and diarrhea for three days until it was out of my system. Just not for me."

For Gout, Acute "I have had gout flares for 17 years and finally succumbed and went to the doctor, who gave me colchicine, two of the 0.6 mg tablets daily, which was effective but added a steroid pack (5 days) to help knock the serious ankle flare down. Plans to put me on allopurinol when stable. Now, 2 weeks in, the swelling is near 100% gone, but the lingering ache with burning continues. I am going to request indomethacin, as I now recall a friend giving me some for a flare many years ago and it was 100% effective at that time."

For Pseudogout, Prophylaxis "Had excruciating leg and knee pain for weeks until finally diagnosed as pseudo-gout. Colchicine did wonders, and now virtually pain-free. Now the bad news: three doctors have said it will no longer be made available."

For Gout, Acute "The best drug for gout is indomethacin if your stomach can handle it. Colcrys works for some people, but it is basically useless for a lot of people. I still use it because my rheumatologist pushes the issue despite the fact that I tell him it's not doing a darn thing for me."

For Behcet's Disease "Been using colchicine for over 20 years. No noticeable side effects, but do get my bloods checked annually. Only problem was when returned to using it after a two-year break. Some diarrhea at first, but this stopped after a few weeks once body built up tolerance to the drug."

For Gout, Acute "I’m afraid colchicine hasn’t worked at all. I don’t know why the doc didn’t prescribe Indomethacin, which worked for me after a gout attack years ago. After two days, I have no relief at all from the knee pain. I will now have to go back to urgent care."

Colchicine "This drug saved my life. I was incapacitated by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD) until I began taking Mitigare. Had I had this stuff 20 years ago, I wouldn't need new knees and hips right now."

For Behcet's Disease "I started colchicine for the first time, and it gave me severe diarrhea, and after the third day, my hair started to fall out a lot. Then I discontinued this awful drug. I'm lost now, I don't know what else to take to reduce my Behçet's symptoms. My ears are blocked now, and I have difficulty breathing, especially at night, plus hair fall and joint pain, mouth ulcers. I've been going to doctors all the time, didn't know what I had in the beginning. Five years later, I was diagnosed with Behçet's disease. I always feel depressed, nothing is helping my symptoms. I feel so tired all the time and can't cook for my children."

For Gout, Acute "It is working, but very slowly... possibly due to my age (>80). Feet feel better and veins are starting to show again. Only side effect so far is to the intestinal system... bowel movement... but that is treatable. So far, so good."

For Gout, Acute "Colcrys works for gout flares. Allopurinol barely gets half of gout patients' uric acid down to where they stop having flares. Use Uloric 40 mg to lower your uric acid further than allopurinol could, so you don't have flares anymore because there will be less uric acid in the body, and therefore it won't be stuck in your joints hurting you. It's free each month if your doctor writes 90 days and you use the Uloric copay savings card."

For Gout, Acute "I was taking 0.5 mg colchicine every 12 hours. Felt extremely tired and have been having difficulty with breathing, as well as a little dizziness. Another side effect that has been bothering me is feeling numbness and tingling in my arm and fingers. Also have excessive gas, black stools, and dry mouth. Besides the effects, it has helped with my never-ending flare-up."

For Familial Mediterranean Fever "Improvement started immediately after starting medication. Complete return to normal function after 6 months on medication. Current dose 1.8 mg daily. Stomach issues, which may have been from extensive antibiotic use prior to correct diagnosis, were resolved with Culturelle Probiotic and recognizing lactose intolerance. This drug did cause lactose intolerance."

For Behcet's Disease "After my diagnosis of Behçet's disease, my doctor started me on colchicine for treatment. We continued to increase the dosage while trying to find the 'sweet spot' for me to obtain maximum benefit. However, the medicine did not provide any relief for me. It also did not have any side effects. My physician changed to another treatment plan to attempt to control my symptoms. Unfortunately, not every medication reacts the same for everyone due to our biological makeup. I have read about many that have results with this medication. I have also read about some that have negative side effects that cause them to change treatment."

Colchicine for Gout, Acute "Within 30 minutes, I became very dizzy to the point of becoming disabled. Further investigation revealed other inactive ingredients contained within the capsule that I couldn't tolerate. Don’t ingest this medicine, stay with colchicine alone!"

For Gout, Acute "Thought I'd leave a wee something. Eight weeks ago, I suffered a 1st metatarsal break on my left foot and was in a boot for five weeks. Towards the end of the five weeks, I felt pain in the exact position on my right foot that I had with the left. I got checked out at the doctor's, they took bloods. Turns out, gout. By this time, I'm walking like a penguin."

For Gout, Acute "Have had gout for 14 years. Been on allopurinol probably 8 of those. Probably 8 years for Colcrys too. But only take it during a flare-up. It used to work amazingly. Last two times it has helped. But I get diarrhea. Woke me up yesterday and was running to the bathroom all day. And today. And this time my foot is still in a lot of pain. Thank goodness I am off work."

For Gout, Acute "Is effective at limiting or preventing severe gout attacks in my case. Unfortunately, I have started having trouble remembering things that I had no problem with before. (Ex. the PIN # for my credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM.) Not scary but frustrating!"

For Gout, Prophylaxis "Don't bother. I took colchicine for a few days, and all I got was a gut ache, diarrhea, and it comes with a risk of your hair thinning, and at my age, it would probably stay like that. Gout is no better, so I am getting these changed to another medication, but there is virtually no choice. You either take prednisone steroids, which makes you fat and depressed, or you take NSAIDs unless they give you prescription strength, you can buy them yourself over the counter. So I believe you are on your own with gout."

For Gout, Acute "This colchicine is good medication if it's taken with care. Helps lower uric acid. Dose and duration may result in you needing to go to the ER, as it has a very narrow therapeutic range. One time, ER never found it as the culprit. Second time, same symptoms discontinued. Now tried a few days on and off. But every time, new symptoms worsen. Discontinued (-10)*"

For Gout, Acute "I suffered my first and only gout attack two years ago. My left 3rd toe was cherry red, swollen, and so painful I wanted to have it amputated. How could something so small cause so much pain? The 2nd day I went to my family practice clinic. They prescribed colchicine. Within 24 hr., the pain had subsided. They followed up with a long-term low-dose allopurinol regimen. So far, there's been no recurrence. Hope it stays that way, especially since my primary care doctor does not want me to use colchicine because of my kidney problems."

For Gout, Acute "Absolutely worthless. Like everyone here, I’m sure, my case of gout was particularly bad for me to go to the doctor. I was given a shot and 7 tablets of this colchicine to take once a day. ZERO results, I mean nothing. Inflammation didn't decrease, soreness, nothing. I WANT MY COPAY BACK."
