"I have been taking Biaxin for 6 days. I was horribly sick to the extent that I couldn’t even get out of bed. I was so miserable. I had sinus pain, throat infection, and annoying cough (the kind that keeps you awake all night and makes you pee your pants). It is true, Biaxin gives this unpleasant metallic taste that stays with you 24 hours a day, BUT IT WORKS. I guess your experience depends on how sick and miserable you feel. I would rather experience the metallic taste than feeling so sick."

"I was experiencing extreme thirst and a bad taste in my mouth after two doses on this medicine. My boyfriend suggested I drink some Gatorade and that helped tremendously with the thirst and the bad taste. I hope this tip works for some other people dealing with these side effects, as they were not fun. I drink water all day every day, but I just couldn't quench"

"I have been clarithromycin for two days now for sinusitis and so far it seems to be working as my pain has eased and I feel much better but the metallic taste in my mouth is overwhelming. Am also experiencing dizziness and fatigue."

"I just finished 3 weeks of Clarithromycin for chronic sinusitis. I was on Augmentin for 2 weeks prior to that. I've had a cough for 3 months. My ears have been stopped up for months. My cough is maybe 20% better and there is no improvement with my ears. My main concern is I have almost totally lost my sense of smell. Will this resolve now that I'm off the drug?"

"I have been on Biaxin for about 7 days for sinus infection and bronchitis. I started to feel better after a couple of days, but don't feel as good. Still coughing and stuffed up on one side. Side effects haven't been too bad - metallic taste in mouth for some time after I take it, but goes away. Also makes me a little nauseous if I don't take with food. Wondering if I need to go back to the Dr. though."

Biaxin (clarithromycin) "I battled a sinus infection for almost 3 months. I had pain above my eye and maxillary sinuses. I had green/yellow thick discharge coming out of my nose from the front and back. At the beginning of the infection at about 2 weeks in I took Augmentin with no luck. I suffered for almost 2 more months until going on the Biaxin. After 1 week of the medication all of my symptoms were gone. I was worried I would need surgery if this didn't work. As for side effects the only one I noticed was the taste in my mouth but it was subtle and not that bad. Stomach was fine as I took a probiotic yogurt every day. This drug was amazing."

"Had a bad cold that got better but got worse. Muscle and joint pain, lethargy, fatigue, postnasal drip. I have sinusitis history but nothing this worse. My doc gave me Clarithromycin 500mg. Just took my first dose, laid down, and poof. All muscle pains gone. I can actually get up and catch up on office work etc. Agree on the weird taste in the mouth, but not too bothersome."

"After reading reviews, I was pretty apprehensive about taking Clarithromycin. However, it worked just fine for me. I took it for two weeks. I really had no side effects other than a little dry mouth at night. I never had a bad taste, no vivid dreams, and I did not get a yeast infection or stomach problems. Just keep in mind that people react differently to medication."

"My sinus infection was hard to diagnose. Thought allergy meds were causing post nasal drip. Then my lungs were inflaming to the point I couldn't play racketball. Got to my allergist, it took a week. By then I was contemplating getting on oxygen by going to the hospital, but prescription finally came for Doxcyclin. Though 22 days of 30 It eased things up. Started the Biaxin just a few days after the end of the Doxcyclin. Dr warned me of aluminum taste Pharmacist warned me of needing food. Never noticed any stomach upset. Stopped taking with food, but always with a big glass of water. Only noticed metalic taste a few times waking up with foam in the back of my throat, but by the 3rd day that was gone. I'm on the 2nd week and starting sprints."

"I was prescribed 500mg of Clarithromycin for a week for severe sinusitis and a very sore throat. I'd had the sore throat for a week and it was getting worse. It started to clear up after a couple of days of taking these. Haven't noticed much effect for the sinusitis but haven't had any side effects except for really weird and vivid dreams. I woke up rather upset this morning! So they worked for me (especially as I am horribly allergic to amoxycillin) but I'll be glad when the horrible dreams go back to normal!"

"I started with an ear infection, which became sinusitis, and now pneumonia. I was prescribed Biaxin XL 1000mg (2 pills) 1x/day for 10 days. I have this horrid metal taste in my mouth, other than that all is well. I'll take the metal taste over the hacking, sneezing and congestion! Only day 2 of the medicine, hoping it works! "

"Multiple problems which a 7 day course of Erthymacin did not solve a month earlier and my condition worsened. Lost my voice - throat felt like it was on fire and a nagging cough, have a dental abscess and the sinusitis was the worst problem - as it stopped me from being able to sleep through the night; constantly having to get up to clear my throat from the sinus drainage. The sinus drainage upset my tummy which had me vomiting at work. I switched doctors and my new doctor said I was under-treated. He gave me two shots in the butt (one was a steroid and the other one I think was for my allergies). He prescribed the clarithromyacin 14days- after a few days I really noticed that my sinuses were much improved. Sore throat gone/sleeping!."

"I was prescribed these for an ongoing sinus problem, I'm not convinced it is an infection as my mucus is clear and not bright yellow as it has been in the past when I've had infected sinuses. I've experienced horrible side effect, horrible taste in my mouth, nausea, fatigue, muscle ache and just generally feeling ill. I would stop taking it but if it is an infection it will probably make it worse so just going to buck up and finish the course. I would not recommend these antibiotics to anyone."

"I have a cough about six weeks, also with a sinus infection. Was on amoxicillin, didn’t work. Now on clarithromycin and deltacortril and nasal spray. My pharmacist called it a “ rescue package”. My doctor said he was putting a sledgehammer to work. Eating well, hydrated well, no problem with toilet. Metal taste. But seems to be working"

Biaxin (clarithromycin) "I have had sinus surgery due to chronic sinus infections that would not relent. (turns out I had an abscess) After three different antibiotics the ENT finally cultured my sinuses and Biaxin was the big winner! It works for me every time and I can tell a difference within 12 hours of taking first dose. If you have chronic sinus infections, get an ENT."

"I'm currently on this medication and I can hardly come to finish the course!!!! I have constant diarrhea, a metallic taste 24/7, and I do not eat or drink anything all day. Night time is the worst, constantly have to wake up and spit out the nasty taste in my mouth, and I can't seem to ever get any good sleep cause my dreams are so vivid + the constant waking up to a bad taste. I will make sure to never take this medication again, it really is the worst I have EVER been on! (and I have been on a lot!!)"

"Taking this medicine is a challenge. The metallic after taste can drive you to overeat just to get the taste out of your mouth. That being said it is the most effective antibiotic for me as I am allergic to penicillin & z packs just don't do the complete job. I have been struggling with a sinus infection for 16 months & have been on antibiotics 6 times. I am a voracious reader & researcher. I am now in my 4th week of clarithro & am having success. What made this round different was learning that most of the vitamins taken inhibit the effectiveness of clarithro. No supplements for the month. Pain control is with naproxen & benadryl. Flucanozole 2x a day. Ear issues, bend at waist & do the spray for eustachion tubes. Helps move the crud out!"

"As a regular sufferer of sinusitis (although been few and far between as I get older), this has always been my go-to antibiotic. The 'mycin' family antibiotics work really well for me, whereas sulfas I have an allergic response to and amoxicillin only gives me yeast infections..usually 500 mg every 12, but I don't need it for long...closer to 5 days than 10.. I notice side effects when I don't really need it: bad taste in mouth, stomach upset, the trots, nausea. I find this drug works amazing well for me. Although I'm usually advised to take the whole amount, my body simply can't handle it, and lets me know when its time to stop! When its working, none of those side effects are present- just healing. Different antibiotics work differently for different peoples systems..but if erythromycin works for you, this is like its stronger big brother. I recommend."

"I had a cold for a couple of weeks leading to infection with Sinusitis, severe pain blocked nose, foggy hearing & thick greenish phlegm combined with a horrible cough that sounds like smokers with Bronchitis. Initially GP prescribed a short course Amoxicillin for 3 days then a further one week with no improvement. I was put on Clarithromycin as a last course and I have been on it for 3 days. I researched the side effects are worrying ! I experienced so far bitter horrible taste in mouth that disturbs sleep, palpitations , confusion , fatigue. Its important to take a strong probiotic with live yogurt and drink a lot daily. So far I can see a slight improvement & I intend to persevere and finish the course as stopping is not advisable ."

"Was given for chronic sinusitis for 10 days, with prednisone for 3 days at the beginning. Gave me extreme nausea and some diarrhea, dizzy and weak, by day 4 second dose, was having trouble standing up/walking or sitting up, weak legs, breathing felt funny, talking funny, went to er. There for 6 hours for fluids and anti-nausea medicine. Still have loose bowels a week later. Still have sinus infection. Scary"

"Prescribed this antibiotic TODAY for sinus pain. Read the leaflet and had doubts as the list of possible side effects was enormous but have been plagued with post nasal drip and face pain for a week so went ahead and took tablet one at about 2 pm. Couldn't finish evening meal although hungry as began to feel very nauseous. An hour later my stomach is gurgling and popping like mad and I feel like I'm going to throw up. I positively detest being physically sick. The very thought of vomiting is making me ill. I also feel jittery a bit like anxiety. This is a nightmare and totally not worth it. Will not be taking gigantic tablet number two bah!"

"On day three of the clarithromycin 500mg XL for sinusitis and I don’t see even the slightest difference. I have had major diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, confusion, and the worst headache I have ever had to the point where I can’t move or it hurts more. I also have that foul metal taste and it certainly wakes you at night. I have taken so many antibiotics in my life but these have definitely been the hardest to cope with, especially with how huge these pills are. **UPDATE** ended up getting sinusitis again 2 weeks later. Never again with these pills. I had all those listed side effects from the pill for no reason, as infection is back. I will now be telling my doctors that I do not get along with Biaxin."

Biaxin (clarithromycin) "I went to the doctor 4 days ago. I have been sick for 2 weeks. I have a major sinus infection and cough. 500 mg of Biaxin twice a day, Flonase, ibuprofen, and Mucinex. Still not better - called Doctor who said to give it one more day and come in."

"Worst drug I've ever taken. I took it for four days 500mg twice a day. It may have helped with sinus infection but it wiped me off my feet Terrible taste in my mouth, upset stomach, diarrhea and felt like I was going to faint at times I'll fight the infection on my own.. :("

"Biaxin 500 mg leaves bad taste. MD suggested to eat chocolate when taking it. I have no problem with that! Must say it helped me but it could also be the steriods given with it. Hope this helps someone!"
