"I have been on clarithromycin for two days now for sinusitis, and so far it seems to be working as my pain has eased and I feel much better, but the metallic taste in my mouth is overwhelming. I'm also experiencing dizziness and fatigue."

"Multiple problems which a 7-day course of erythromycin did not solve a month earlier, and my condition worsened. Lost my voice - throat felt like it was on fire and a nagging cough, have a dental abscess, and the sinusitis was the worst problem - as it stopped me from being able to sleep through the night; constantly having to get up to clear my throat from the sinus drainage. The sinus drainage upset my tummy, which had me vomiting at work. I switched doctors, and my new doctor said I was under-treated. He gave me two shots in the butt (one was a steroid and the other one I think was for my allergies). He prescribed the clarithromycin for 14 days - after a few days, I really noticed that my sinuses were much improved. Sore throat gone/sleeping!"

"I just finished 3 weeks of clarithromycin for chronic sinusitis. I was on Augmentin for 2 weeks prior to that. I've had a cough for 3 months. My ears have been stopped up for months. My cough is maybe 20% better, and there is no improvement with my ears. My main concern is I have almost totally lost my sense of smell. Will this resolve now that I'm off the drug?"

"I started with an ear infection, which became sinusitis, and now pneumonia. I was prescribed Biaxin XL 1000 mg (2 pills) 1x/day for 10 days. I have this horrid metal taste in my mouth, other than that, all is well. I'll take the metal taste over the hacking, sneezing, and congestion! Only day 2 of the medicine, hoping it works!"

"Had a bad cold that got better but got worse. Muscle and joint pain, lethargy, fatigue, postnasal drip. I have sinusitis history but nothing this worse. My doc gave me clarithromycin 500 mg. Just took my first dose, laid down, and poof. All muscle pains gone. I can actually get up and catch up on office work, etc. Agree on the weird taste in the mouth, but not too bothersome."

"After reading reviews, I was pretty apprehensive about taking clarithromycin. However, it worked just fine for me. I took it for two weeks. I really had no side effects other than a little dry mouth at night. I never had a bad taste, no vivid dreams, and I did not get a yeast infection or stomach problems. Just keep in mind that people react differently to medication."

"I was prescribed these for an ongoing sinus problem, I'm not convinced it is an infection, as my mucus is clear and not bright yellow as it has been in the past when I've had infected sinuses. I've experienced horrible side effects, a horrible taste in my mouth, nausea, fatigue, muscle ache, and just generally feeling ill. I would stop taking it, but if it is an infection, it will probably make it worse, so I'm just going to buck up and finish the course. I would not recommend these antibiotics to anyone."

"I have been on Biaxin for about 7 days for a sinus infection and bronchitis. I started to feel better after a couple of days, but don't feel as good. Still coughing and stuffed up on one side. Side effects haven't been too bad - metallic taste in my mouth for some time after I take it, but it goes away. Also makes me a little nauseous if I don't take it with food. Wondering if I need to go back to the doctor though."

"My sinus infection was hard to diagnose. Thought allergy meds were causing post-nasal drip. Then my lungs were inflaming to the point I couldn't play racquetball. Got to my allergist, it took a week. By then, I was contemplating getting on oxygen by going to the hospital, but the prescription finally came for Doxycycline. Though 22 days of 30, it eased things up. Started the Biaxin just a few days after the end of the Doxycycline. The doctor warned me of an aluminum taste. The pharmacist warned me of needing food. Never noticed any stomach upset. Stopped taking with food, but always with a big glass of water. Only noticed a metallic taste a few times waking up with foam in the back of my throat, but by the 3rd day that was gone. I'm on the 2nd week and starting sprints."

"I have a cough for about six weeks, also with a sinus infection. Was on amoxicillin, didn’t work. Now on clarithromycin and Deltacortril and nasal spray. My pharmacist called it a “rescue package.” My doctor said he was putting a sledgehammer to work. Eating well, hydrated well, no problem with the toilet. Metal taste. But it seems to be working."

Clarithromycin "I have had sinus surgery due to chronic sinus infections that would not relent. (Turns out I had an abscess.) After three different antibiotics, the ENT finally cultured my sinuses, and Biaxin was the big winner! It works for me every time, and I can tell a difference within 12 hours of taking the first dose. If you have chronic sinus infections, get an ENT."

Clarithromycin "I battled a sinus infection for almost 3 months. I had pain above my eye and maxillary sinuses. I had green/yellow thick discharge coming out of my nose from the front and back. At the beginning of the infection, at about 2 weeks in, I took Augmentin with no luck. I suffered for almost 2 more months until going on the Biaxin. After 1 week of the medication, all of my symptoms were gone. I was worried I would need surgery if this didn't work. As for side effects, the only one I noticed was the taste in my mouth, but it was subtle and not that bad. My stomach was fine as I took a probiotic yogurt every day. This drug was amazing."

"Clarithromycin gave me a metal taste in my mouth, and since finishing a course of 14 days, I still have an upset stomach, sore tongue, and metal taste, although not as severe. I will never take this drug again, going back to my G.P. for advice."

"Biaxin 500 mg leaves a bad taste. MD suggested to eat chocolate when taking it. I have no problem with that! Must say it helped me, but it could also be the steroids given with it. Hope this helps someone!"

"Taking this medicine is a challenge. The metallic aftertaste can drive you to overeat just to get the taste out of your mouth. That being said, it is the most effective antibiotic for me, as I am allergic to penicillin, and Z-Packs just don't do the complete job. I have been struggling with a sinus infection for 16 months and have been on antibiotics 6 times. I am a voracious reader and researcher. I am now in my 4th week of clarithro and am having success. What made this round different was learning that most of the vitamins taken inhibit the effectiveness of clarithro. No supplements for the month. Pain control is with naproxen and Benadryl. Fluconazole 2x a day. Ear issues, bend at waist and do the spray for Eustachian tubes. Helps move the crud out!"

"On day three of the clarithromycin 500 mg XL for sinusitis, and I don’t see even the slightest difference. I have had major diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, confusion, and the worst headache I have ever had to the point where I can’t move or it hurts more. I also have that foul metal taste, and it certainly wakes you at night. I have taken so many antibiotics in my life, but these have definitely been the hardest to cope with, especially with how huge these pills are. **UPDATE** ended up getting sinusitis again 2 weeks later. Never again with these pills. I had all those listed side effects from the pill for no reason, as the infection is back. I will now be telling my doctors that I do not get along with Biaxin."

"I was taking clarithromycin for sinusitis, and it worked, but I got severe back pain with the medication and a very nasty taste in my mouth. My stomach hurt, so then I started taking it with food, and the pain never came back."

"I've suffered from chronic sinusitis and post nasal drip for a while now. Biaxin is the only drug that worked for me, my PND started decreasing after one day, and my nasal passages were completely clear by day 4. As for side effects, it increased my appetite and sent me to the bathroom more often than usual. As for the nausea and metallic taste in my mouth that most people reported, that only occurred on my last day of treatment, thankfully. It's a small price to pay for the relief I got, however."

"I'm currently on this medication, and I can hardly come to finish the course! I have constant diarrhea, a metallic taste 24/7, and I do not eat or drink anything all day. Nighttime is the worst, I constantly have to wake up and spit out the nasty taste in my mouth, and I can't seem to ever get any good sleep because my dreams are so vivid, plus the constant waking up to a bad taste. I will make sure to never take this medication again, it really is the worst I have EVER been on! (and I have been on a lot!)"

"Was given for chronic sinusitis for 10 days, with prednisone for 3 days at the beginning. Gave me extreme nausea and some diarrhea, dizzy and weak. By day 4, second dose, was having trouble standing up/walking or sitting up, weak legs, breathing felt funny, talking funny. Went to ER. There for 6 hours for fluids and anti-nausea medicine. Still have loose bowels a week later. Still have a sinus infection. Scary."

"500 mg X 2 a day for 7 days. First couple of days on it, I felt a little queasy with loose bowels. I did wake every night with the horrible taste, but nothing too bad. On day 4, the pain in my head has really improved, but still coughing. I have another GP appointment Monday in case 7 days is not long enough to clear it."

"I had a cold for a couple of weeks leading to infection with sinusitis, severe pain, blocked nose, foggy hearing, and thick greenish phlegm combined with a horrible cough that sounds like smokers with bronchitis. Initially, the GP prescribed a short course of amoxicillin for 3 days, then a further one week with no improvement. I was put on clarithromycin as a last course, and I have been on it for 3 days. I researched the side effects, which are worrying! I experienced, so far, a bitter, horrible taste in my mouth that disturbs sleep, palpitations, confusion, and fatigue. It's important to take a strong probiotic with live yogurt and drink a lot daily. So far, I can see a slight improvement, and I intend to persevere and finish the course as stopping is not advisable."

"This is not the first time I have been on this medicine for recurrent sinus infections, I don't like it, but it always seems to work. I am taking 2 500 mg once per day. The disgusting taste in my mouth generally starts around day 2, and headaches around day 3. I can't sleep when I am taking it, but so far no other issues. I will be glad to stop taking it, 4 more days to go."

"It has been 2 months since I was put on Biaxin (see my entry on March 3). I only got through 4 days of a 10-day course. I have had diarrhea for 2 months, have lost 20 lbs, have nausea off and on every day. I have had many work-ups and stool samples, all negative. My ears have been ringing (tinnitus) since I went on Biaxin, all day and night. It has really taken a huge toll on my life. I wish the doctor had told me to take probiotics. I have esophageal candida from good bacteria being wiped out. My gastroenterologist has to wait until my GI heals a bit before a colonoscopy and a long course of antifungals to tame the candida. And the sinus thing? Still present. Biaxin has really messed up my body and my life."

"I had a cold and cough which would not go away and a sinus infection for 2 weeks. I was prescribed clarithromycin, and after 50 mins of taking it, I got the biggest headache/migraine of my life. Ended up in the emergency room on a drip and on anti-migraine medication. This drug was not good for me and had terrible side effects, will never use this again!"
