"I am 57 with sporadic edema, and was given this drug because I asked for something less powerful than what I was taking. Two days later, I was in the emergency room, having difficulty breathing and a racing heart rate with almost no exertion. Symptoms went away a day after stopping the drug. Perhaps my physician misprescribed this, but it almost did me in. Awful reaction."

"This drug is dangerous! Doctor prescribed chlorthalidone for fluid retention. I took it for 4 days. I began experiencing extreme cramping on day 2. Got diarrhea, cramping from the neck down so severe I was in tears. It tore my stomach up. Day seven (note I haven't taken any more for 3 days), I am still recovering from the stomach pain and diarrhea. I'm rating this drug a 1. What good is it if you can't take it because the side effects are so severe?"

"Chlorthalidone was a game changer for me. The fluid retention in my feet, legs, and hands was terrible. Within a week of taking 50 mg a day, all my fluid retention disappeared. Have been on it for around two years now. Couldn't imagine not having it. It also lowered my blood pressure to near what is acceptable. Two positive things from the pill. I can't thank my doctor enough. The only negative is having to pee every hour, even through the night. But I can handle that trade-off. Hope this review helps someone else have better health and a better life."

"Pitting edema in both legs and feet for over two years. Tried many loop diuretics, but they did absolutely nothing to reduce fluid, and the previous doctor never suggested thiazide-type diuretics nor seemed interested in finding out what was causing my edema, so I finally found a new doc. She put me on 25 mg chlorthalidone every day, which worked very well. I lost 15 pounds of fluid within two weeks, and my legs were back to normal. However, my sodium level dropped to 129, and my doctor asked me to discontinue taking it. But she also forgot to tell me to reduce fluid intake, and I'm pretty sure that's why my sodium dropped. Trying again with a 15 mg dose and restricting fluid intake to 1.5 liters a day or less. Will update my experience in a couple of weeks."

"After 2 months of being on 25 mg chlorthalidone for pitting edema and losing 15 lbs of fluid in my legs, it stopped working. Experienced side effects of low sodium and chloride levels and dehydration, but stuck with it since the effects of edema were worse. Weight had stabilized, but then started gaining a pound a day. Dose was increased to 50 mg, but had no effect and continued to gain original fluid back. I've already tried so many different diuretics, including both loop and thiazide types, and none worked at all until chlorthalidone. I'm tired and frustrated that the doctor can't even figure out what's causing the edema, which at this point is several years."

"I force myself to take this, but just can't do it. I experienced severe shortness of breath all day. I pee more without this pill. Very bad and painful experience, my chest and back are still sore."

"I have tried this medication but in the Spanish version (clortalidona), and it works miracles. I love it because I have a lot of fluid retention. I take it 1-2 times a week, and I feel a lot lighter. You can really tell the difference."
