"This is the best cough syrup, hands down, in the country. It works very, very well and has no bad taste. Very pricey, but worth it. Some doctors will not write for it. I think that is poor professionalism for those who refuse. Yes, some will seek and/or abuse, but the benefit of the doubt should be given for something that works this well. Highly recommended."

"I had a bad cough from COVID that wouldn’t recede. I was prescribed Tussionex Pennkinetic, and it stopped the cough quickly. It is the only medicine that has worked effectively for me. Highly recommend it."

"This is the best cough medicine out there. Whenever I get chest colds that keep me up at night coughing, I request this. I have been doing this for 10 yrs. Seriously, if you want to stop your cough - request this one. Nothing works like this one. The side effects do not outweigh the results!"

"After 15 years of vasomotor rhinitis, which caused chronic coughing, I was finally prescribed something that helped me sleep without waking up 10 times coughing each night. I don't notice any hangover or grogginess the next day. My only complaint is that it is not covered by my insurance and is a little expensive."

"I first used Tussionex in 1981. At that time, it was called Tussionex Susp. and contained only 5 mg of hydrocodone per dose. They also had a tablet version available back then, which equaled one teaspoon of the suspension. The reason that it is so effective over other cough remedies, even other syrups that contain hydrocodone, is due to the type of hydrocodone used."

"A wonderful medicine! Stops a nagging cough dead in its tracks. I have used it several times when I've had the flu or a bad cold. Unfortunately, it is now hard to get due to people who can't be responsible with such medications."

"This is a wonderful medicine that will turn off the most vicious coughs. Having said that, my doctor and I found that 5 ml every 8 hrs (instead of the usual max of 10 ml/day) is most effective in my case; I'm about 2 meters tall and about 105 kilos. I have asthma, which is easily exacerbated; when I get any sort of cough, it can (and, in the past, has) turned into pneumonia. In my doctor's estimation, Tussionex has saved me about 5 trips to the hospital over the last 10 years. In summary: This medicine, (expensive as it may be) has, in my opinion, plausibly saved my life. It shuts the cough off and allows my lungs to heal."

"I recently moved to Savannah, GA, and developed a horrid cough. I continued to get colds and did not stop coughing for weeks. I was treated by an allergist with every known allergy drug, inhaler, and nasal spray. I then started allergy shots. I continued to cough till I threw up at least 10 times a day. In addition, this caused urinary incontinence. I then started to see an ENT and went through cat scans, scopes, etc., with no relief from the cough. My personal care physician has now suggested I see a gastroenterologist. Meanwhile, she was willing to treat the symptoms. This is the best drug I have ever taken. After the first dose, I immediately stopped coughing. It lasts a full 12 hours and allows me to sleep!"

"Tussionex is awesome for that cough you get at night, where you get a tickle in your throat and just have to cough and can't stop. For me, it makes me feel loopy, though, even 12 hours later I will be lightheaded, so I usually don't use it unless Cepacol or something doesn't work. It's rare I use it more than once a year, and even then I only use half the dose. It really works, but it's powerful."

"I was prescribed Tussionex for a cough associated with viral pneumonia. It was excellent for suppressing my cough. However, I felt as if I'd had a couple of margaritas, so I was only able to take it before bedtime instead of every 12 hours, or I couldn't have functioned at work. On the positive side, it did eliminate the constant cough and allow me a good night's sleep. As another reviewer noted, I also found it extremely constipating. I advise increasing your liquid intake and possibly taking an over-the-counter stool softener while using Tussionex."

"This stuff is amazing when you are really sick. A severe cough was making my head and neck hurt so bad. After about 20 minutes of taking Tussionex, my cough was much improved, and my neck/headache almost non-existent. I was prescribed this after codeine wasn't helping at all. Will definitely take it again if needed."

"I've read everyone's posts and am so jealous! I've been coughing for 5 days now and haven't had a decent night's sleep for the last 6 nights! The doctor prescribed this medicine 3 days ago, took it, and nothing. Seriously, nothing! Felt a little relief 10 hours later, but nothing like what everyone else here has experienced. I'm still coughing and miserable and am going to give it another try tonight."

"I had a bad cold and a continued cough that kept me awake. After I developed a fever, I was prescribed Tussionex and antibiotics. The Tussionex worked amazingly well. I was finally able to sleep without waking up coughing all the time. It does taste good too. I have just been taking it at bedtime and am trying not to take it too much. But if I have any more cough problems, I will ask for this first!"

"After my stubborn attempt to rid an upper respiratory cold without a doctor's help, and trying OTC guaifenesin, mucolytics, dexbrompheniramine for cough suppression, and staying well-rested and hydrated, at days 10-13 I realized I needed help as I hardly slept for two days with an incessant post-nasal drip-caused cough. An urgent care doc confirmed no pneumonia, no sinus infection, yet to handle the cough, lingering inflammation, and likely bacterial symptoms (yellow and brown sputum), prescribed an albuterol inhaler, zithromycin, and Tussionex. Smart cocktail to handle all. I’ve slept great for the past two days because the Tussionex has kept my cough at bay, and I’m turning the corner for the better."

"Just got some of this at immediate care. Thank you, thank you!!!! I have bronchitis and have been coughing for 3 weeks. It is ridiculous that Drs don't want to give it because a minority of people will abuse it, and that has tied their hands. Give me a break!!!! I took this, and 5 minutes later, coughed up some terrible-looking infected mucus. I'm not coughing, relaxed, and finally will be able to sleep. Good luck getting it, though, especially from your regular Dr. They will try everything else before giving you something that works. Not to mention appt after appt..... Mo money, Mo money. Go straight to immediate care, pay the extra, or hope your deductible is paid. Also, for everyone saying it doesn't work, make sure you are shaking it up well."

"Cleared my cough and allowed me to rest. This liquid must be taken exactly as prescribed. I experienced a slight feeling of lethargy the next day. Given that as a side effect, I would take this again for any of my severe coughing spells."

"This stuff is great. I have had a chronic cough for over a year following an esophagectomy. This is the first medication that actually works for more than a couple of hours. I can actually make it through the night without having coughing episodes. As a side benefit, it tastes pretty good."

"There's no generic for this medication, and it is quite expensive, but definitely worth the money. My husband had a post-nasal drip cough that just wouldn't go away, and it kept both of us up at night. He took a teaspoon of this, and we both slept through the night, he didn't cough once. Felt great in the morning too, no drowsiness. Great stuff."

"I have mild asthma and allergies. My Azmacort inhaler is not enough at times, and the Tussionex gives me complete relief from the nagging cough that I find so exasperating! I only use it once a day (and not every day) during allergy season. It's made my life much more comfortable during allergy season. Absolutely no side effects when taken once a day as I do. Worth every penny."

"I was prescribed this medicine in the ER when I was diagnosed with bronchitis. The very first thing the doctor said with this medication is do not drive. I totally agree, the medicine is wonderful, it pretty much got rid of the cough and helped clear up my head congestion. I would have to say that the worst side effect is that it makes you feel very drowsy and sleepy, like you are under the influence of alcohol."

"As stated, Tussionex is expensive. With that said, you get what you pay for. I had a cough that kept me up for 3 days. I went to my doctor, and he prescribed Tussionex for me. I had 1 teaspoon before bed and woke up 8 1/2 hours later. My cough did not wake me up once during the night."

"For cough spasms, this is as close to a miracle drug as you can find. You can get a slight buzz and sometimes insomnia while taking it, but it beats an uncontrollable dry hacking cough all night. So at the very least, it offers a relaxing night in bed, even though you may not get into a deep sleep. Sometimes I take an Ambien so I can sleep."

"I have a problem with recurring bronchitis because of asthma. When this happens, I cough a lot. The Tussionex is a lifesaver for me. It stops the cough that nothing else has ever stopped. It makes me sleepy, but the cough is paralyzing, so it's well worth it. The price makes me very thankful for my health insurance."

"I have extremely bad coughing spells at night. So my doctor prescribed codeine cough syrup, which surprisingly did not help because it is a pretty strong cough medicine. So instead, he prescribed Tussionex for me. The medicine worked great! The only thing I don't like is it made me sleep all day long, and the next day I could still feel it in my system, but I know I could have probably slept for 2 days straight off of the small dose he prescribed. He told me to do 'Take 1 teaspoonful 2 times a day.' I only did one, and it made me feel very tired. But it does a great job with suppressing the cough."

"I went to the doctor a week ago, and I was told that I had an upper respiratory infection (3rd one this year), so she gave me the usual antibiotic, Phenergan with codeine cough medicine, and an antihistamine/decongestion medicine. After a week of taking this, still not feeling better. So I went back, and she gave me a different antibiotic and the Tussionex cough medicine. The cough medicine has allowed me to sleep most of the night, but when I take it, I am completely knocked out and loopy. Still cough periodically, but nothing like I was without it. Even with insurance, this medicine was $50 for 4 ounces, but it's worth it! I've taken it before, and it really helps. Just waiting for the other medicines to do their jobs!"
