Acamprosate for Alcohol Use Disorder "Campral truly is a miracle drug for me. I had 20 years sober. 12-step meetings kept me clean. However, I went through serious health issues, a bad divorce, and subsequent abusive relationship. I drank in 2018, but within a month of drinking, I ended up in the ER, which motivated me to stay sober for 2 months. I drank again almost against my will! I was prescribed Antabuse and Campral...stayed sober another few months. I stopped taking the Campral, mostly because my crappy Medicare didn't cover my monthly script, which was $100. I wasn't going to meetings either. I know Campral worked. I could walk by a liquor store and have no interest in going in. I quit again because of my health and family. The only problem is it took a week to work. I'd take Antabuse but, like with Campral, Medicare expects me to pay $90 per month. I am committed to taking Campral. It's been 5 days since I had a drink. I don't have the desire. The only side effect I had was occasional diarrhea."

Acamprosate for Alcohol Use Disorder "This drug works! This is going to sound hard to believe, but from the first dose of this medicine, I have not had a single craving for alcohol. I have been drinking for some 40 years and heavily for the last 10. Needless to say, I was completely shocked at the results. That said, the side effects have been a little tough. I'm only a week in, but the diarrhea has been an issue for about an hour after each dosage. I am hoping that will end in the next day or so."

Acamprosate for Alcohol Use Disorder "I was a heavy drinker for 35 years. I relapsed 2 years ago after more than 12 years of sobriety. My doctor gave me Campral. I was amazed, I had no desire for a drink, ZERO desire. I did have severe diarrhea. The drug was doing so well that I tried to tough it out, hoping my body would adjust. It didn't, and reluctantly, I was forced to stop. After 2 weeks without a drink, I started again. Just got Naltrexone today. I hope it works as well without the side effects."

Acamprosate for Alcohol Use Disorder "At the end, I was drinking a fifth of vodka daily, sometimes more. Was pretty excited about the Sinclair Method using Naltrexone, but it didn't work for me as it did for others. Two trips to the psych ed with debilitating depression fueled by alcohol, one inpatient stint and one rehab later, my psychiatrist prescribed Campral. I'm two weeks in and the worst 'craving' was thinking about drinking prior to the holiday weekend. I used my other supports and didn't drink. I also take gabapentin 600 mg three times daily and Zoloft 200 mg nightly to help with anxiety and depression. (This rating would be a 10, but I've had diarrhea for a few days after upping my dose to 666 mg 3x/day.)"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I lost everything after 35 years of hard drinking. Went to rehabs and AA. I don't want to tell everyone I'm an alcoholic every day when I try to put things in the past tense. 3 days on Campral and yep, it's gold. Sober for 4 months and hey, a bit of diarrhea; but at least I can remember pooping myself. Let's do it. Shane"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Chronic binger for 37 years. Cramps and diarrhea for a week. Neither anywhere near as bad as after 5 or 6 liters of vodka. For the first time in my adult life, I don't want a drink as opposed to wanting not to drink. The difference is the complete absence of underlying anxiety. It's gone. Feels as if I have joined up thinking again. I think I'll keep taking the tablets."

Acamprosate for Alcohol Use Disorder "After being a heavy drinker for 20 years, my life was running out of control. AA didn't work for me, I tried 1-on-1 counseling. Didn't help, I'd relapse after two weeks. Finally, did my own research and suggested Campral to my doc. He contacted my counselor and we began it July 2015. I wish I'd found this years ago! It seemed to work immediately, no cravings or desire to drink. Did have bad diarrhea for first six weeks, so push through it, it's worth it. Just gone to my GP for my final script, and will celebrate my first year sober in July 2016! My GP also said the counselor didn't think I could do it, and my GP is so happy he's going to contact her and tell her about my success. When you're at rock bottom, give it a go! It's saved my life!"
