Applies to colestipol: oral powder for suspension, oral tablet
Side effects requiring immediate medical attention
Along with its needed effects, colestipol (the active ingredient contained in Colestid Flavored) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking colestipol:
- Black, tarry stools
- stomach pain (severe) with nausea and vomiting
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur while taking colestipol:
- Loss of weight (sudden)
Side effects not requiring immediate medical attention
Some side effects of colestipol may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

Very common (10% or more): Constipation, abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort
Common (1% to 10%): Rash
Very common (10% or more): Migraine, sinus headache, headache
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Dizziness
Rare (less than 0.1%): Drowsiness
Frequency not reported: Light-headedness
Common (1% to 10%): Fatigue
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Chest pain, peripheral edema, asthenia
Rare (less than 0.1%): Vertigo
Frequency not reported: Serum phosphorus increased, serum chloride increased, serum sodium decreased, serum potassium decreased, weakness[Ref]
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Appetite decreased
Frequency not reported: Anorexia[Ref]
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Insomnia
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Dyspnea
Frequency not reported: Shortness of breath[Ref]
