Applies to citric acid / magnesium oxide / sodium picosulfate: oral powder for solution

Along with its needed effects, citric acid / magnesium oxide / sodium picosulfate may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking citric acid / magnesium oxide / sodium picosulfate:

  • Bloody stools
  • confusion
  • convulsions
  • decreased urine output
  • dizziness or fainting
  • dry mouth
  • fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
  • fever
  • headache
  • hives, itching or skin rash
  • jerking or shaking of the muscles
  • joint pain, stiffness, or swelling
  • muscle pain or cramps
  • numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or lips
  • pinpoint red or purple spots on the skin
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, ankles, hands, or feet
  • tightness in the chest
  • troubled breathing or swallowing
  • unusual tiredness or weakness

Cardiovascular side effects have included headache (up to 8%).[Ref]


Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea (up to 11%). A certain amount of abdominal bloating, distention, pain/cramping, and watery diarrhea are expected as a consequence of the mechanism of action of citric acid/Mg oxide/Na picosulfate and should be expected. Gastrointestinal side effects reported postmarketing have included abdominal pain, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, and proctalgia. There have been isolated reports of reversible aphthoid ileal ulcers.[Ref]


Hypersensitivity side effects reported postmarketing have included rash, urticaria, and purpura.[Ref]


Metabolic side effects have included electrolyte imbalances including hypokalemia, hyponatremia, and hypermagnesemia.[Ref]
