Eszopiclone (brand name: Lunesta) typically takes around 30 minutes to begin to work. It helps decrease the time it takes you to fall asleep. The manufacturer recommends taking it immediately before bedtime because it works quickly.

Eszopiclone is quickly absorbed into your bloodstream, and reaches maximum concentrations in about 1 hour. However, taking it with or right after a high-fat meal can delay the time it takes to work.

Make sure you have at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep remaining before you need to wake up. Eszopiclone can cause next-day impairment, which can affect your ability to perform certain tasks safely such as driving.

Does Lunesta work on the first night?

Yes, Lunesta works on the first night that you take it. If you don’t feel that it worked well, let your healthcare provider know. They might need to raise your dose or switch you to a different medication.

How long does Lunesta last?

Lunesta typically lasts about 8 hours after you take it. Keep in mind that some people continue to feel the effects of the medication the next day. You may feel less alert, for example. The risk for next-day impairment is higher with higher doses of Lunesta, and if you take it without having at least 7-8 hours to sleep.

Lunesta can also interact with certain medications, which can cause it to get processed more slowly in your body. This can cause its effects to linger. Tell your healthcare provider all of the medications you are taking so they can check for interactions.
