Drug Interaction Report

The following interaction applies only if you are taking sucralfate in the liquid formulation:

Sucralfate oral suspension contains a relatively high carbohydrate content. Patients with diabetes using this medication have occasionally experienced hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. You may need a dose adjustment of repaglinide or any other diabetic medications you are receiving during treatment with sucralfate oral suspension. Likewise, if you stop using sucralfate, the dosage(s) of your diabetic medication(s) may need to be readjusted. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

When sucralfate is given with enteral (tube) feedings, the feeding tube may become clogged and/or sucralfate may not work as well. You could interrupt the feeding for 1 hour before and after the sucralfate dose. However, this still may not entirely avoid the interaction and may not always be feasible. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Grapefruit juice may increase the blood levels of certain medications such as repaglinide. You may want to limit your consumption of grapefruit and grapefruit juice during treatment with repaglinide. However, if you have been regularly consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice with the medication, then it is advisable for you to talk with your doctor before changing the amounts of these products in your diet, as this may alter the effects of your medication. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. Orange juice is not expected to interact.
