Bactroban (brand of mupirocin) 2% ointment--but not the cream or the nasal ointment--is formulated in a polyethylene glycol base. Polyethylene glycol can be absorbed from open wounds and damaged skin, which is then excreted by the kidney where it may also produce serious toxicity. Bactroban 2% ointment should not be used in conditions where absorption of large quantities of polyethylene glycol might be expected (e.g., in severe burns), particularly if there is evidence of moderate or severe renal impairment.
